Chapter 3

Author: Robin
Nico’s expression darkened completely, and the family gala ended on a sour note.

Nico didn’t come home that night. I heard he had bought an estate on Long Island for Lola and was staying there with her.

He had unilaterally decided to give me the silent treatment, while everyone waited to see how I, the woman who had held her head high for five years, would compete with an orphan for his attention.

I had no intention of competing.

Back in the first year of our relationship, I had already told Nico that if he ever found another woman and no longer wanted to be with me, he could call it quits at any time. I wasn’t the kind of woman who would cling to a man who no longer wanted her.

I had said it calmly and matter-of-factly, which had infuriated Nico. He had wrapped his arms tightly around my waist and kissed me fiercely before declaring, “Who’s been filling your head with this nonsense about calling it quits whenever I want? I’m keeping you by my side for the rest of my life.”

We might not have had forever, but I had been happy enough during those five years. That was enough for me.

Before leaving, I still had one event to take care of.

It was a charity project I had spent a year planning, offering free legal consultations to low-income communities. The event was supposed to be open to everyone at no charge.

Just as I was heading to the venue to make the final arrangements, my assistant called, sounding frantic.

“They’ve canceled our venue booking!”

“The management said the Don stepped in and booked the entire place at three times the usual rate. Apparently, he’s hosting a charity auction to raise money for poverty relief.”

My grip tightened slightly around my phone.

I didn’t need to guess who that charity auction was for.

“I understand.” I suppressed the sharp pang in my chest and kept my voice steady. “Please reassure everyone who has already booked an appointment. I’ll find a solution for the venue.”

After hanging up, I called Nico.

He rejected my calls again and again. It wasn’t until my final attempt, after the phone had rung for a long time, that he finally answered.

“What is it?”

His voice was languid, and I could faintly hear a girl laughing in the background.

Pressing my lips together, I got straight to the point. “Could you let me use the venue until my legal-aid event is over? I’ll give it back afterward.”

Nico let out what sounded like a scoff, his voice turning colder when he spoke again.

“So that’s why you finally decided to call me. It’s for that event of yours.”

“I’ve spent a year preparing for it.”

“I know.” His tone was casual. “But I have to look after Lola. She wants to use this charity auction to draw more attention to people living in poverty. That’s far more meaningful than your legal-aid work, where you just sit around chatting with people.”

My breath caught in my throat.

I had spent countless sleepless nights preparing more than a thousand case files, yet in his eyes, all I did was sit around and talk to people.

I had once believed he respected my work.

Perhaps my silence softened his tone a little. “If you really care that much about your event, I could—”

Before he could finish, Lola’s timid voice came through the phone.

“Mr. Moretti, I don’t want the venue. Please don’t let me come between you and Miss Mercer.”

“What do you mean, come between us?”

Nico’s voice softened when he spoke to her. “You can have the venue. I promised your brother I’d take good care of you.”

Of course. How could anything come between us when there was nothing left between us in the first place?

I closed my eyes and drew a deep breath.

“Forget I asked.”

Nico seemed momentarily stunned. Clearly, he hadn’t expected me to give up so easily.

But he soon recovered and said, “Since you’re being so understanding, I’ll set you up with your own law firm later. Consider it compensation for this.”

My own law firm.

For a moment, I was lost in thought, remembering how he had once made me a similar promise.

Back then, he had held me in his arms, his hand closing over mine as I held my pen, and said, “When you have your own law firm, I want to hire you to draw up a marriage contract for me.”

“My only condition is that you never leave me.”

That had been the first time he had ever talked about our future together.

I lowered my eyes, my voice as cool and even as before. “There’s no need. It’s just a venue.”

Nico fell silent for a moment before speaking through gritted teeth. “Claire, you’re always so calm. Is it really that hard for you to swallow your pride for once?”

Then he hung up.

I stood there holding my phone for a long time before finally returning to my office and calling my private wealth manager.

“Settle my accounts and liquidate my assets. Return everything the Moretti family has given me, and turn the rest into cash.”

“Are you planning to...” He paused briefly before asking, “Leave?”

“Yes.”

After all, I couldn’t spend the rest of my life working as legal counsel for the Moretti family.

Three days after Gerald brought me back to New York, he hosted a dinner in my honor. He told me there were many people who wanted to see me.The venue was in Midtown Manhattan. It wasn’t particularly lavish, but the guests were all influential figures in their own right.Among them were Wall Street fund managers, community leaders from Brooklyn, and entrepreneurs who had built their fortunes in the medical device industry. They were all faces I had seen four years earlier at my makeshift legal-aid desk.Back then, they had sat across from me looking so nervous and uneasy that they could barely get their words out. Now, they approached me one after another with drinks in hand, bowing their heads slightly as they greeted me with the words, “Esteemed Attorney Mercer.”Gerald stood beside me and said quietly, “They’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”“Did you arrange all this?”“They wanted to come on their own. I simply let them know.”More than halfway through the dinner, I to

I frowned and studied the man for a couple of seconds before finally remembering where I had seen him.Four years ago, he had sat across from me at the makeshift consultation desk I had set up, wearing a faded shirt and clutching a stack of documents in his hands. He had looked at me helplessly and asked, “I don’t know who else to turn to. Can you help me?”“Gerald Connors,” I said.He smiled and straightened up. “I’m grateful you still remember me.”A startled gasp came from behind me. “Gerald Connors? The tech mogul Mr. Moretti has been trying to work with?”Lola’s voice was sharp, as though she deliberately wanted everyone to hear her. Nico stood nearby, his expression growing darker. The Moretti family had been eager to work with Gerald Connors, but he had never answered Nico’s calls or accepted his invitations.Lola seemed to suddenly understand something. “No wonder Miss Mercer could stay in a refugee camp for so long. It turns out she had someone backing her all along.”Everyone

The day my assignment ended, I slung the same backpack I had brought with me four years earlier over my shoulder and walked out along the muddy road that led away from the camp. When I had first arrived four years ago, no one had come to welcome me. Now, as I left, a line of people stood behind me, watching as I made my way toward the checkpoint at the end of the road. That was when I saw Nico.He was standing outside the checkpoint, looking much thinner than before, his face pale and dark circles beneath his eyes making him look as though he hadn’t slept properly in a very long time. The moment he saw me emerge, he took a step forward.“Claire.”I ignored him and kept walking. He hurried after me, his voice lower and hoarser than I remembered. “I finally found you. Four years, Claire. I’ve been looking for you for four years.”He seemed desperate to pour out everything he had wanted to say over the past few years, all at once.“I’ve prepared a law firm for you, your own law firm. You

Nico’s face was deathly pale, as though his soul had been ripped from his body, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell.Ten days ago. That was when he had taken my venue for Lola. No, it had probably started even earlier, when he repeatedly made me suffer for Lola’s sake. By then, I had already begun planning my departure. That night, I hadn’t argued or made a scene. I had simply watched him leave with another woman in his arms.It was because I no longer cared.Nico sank onto the edge of the bed and pulled the pillow I usually slept on into his arms, clutching it tightly.“No... Claire... You can’t just leave me like this...”He bent forward, burying his face in the pillow as a choked sob escaped him.Nico locked himself in his room for a day and a night. When he finally emerged, his eyes were bloodshot, and he immediately ordered everyone to find me.He instructed the entire family to address me as Donna, even though we had never married.Even though I no longer wanted him.Nico h

The lights in the hospital corridor were painfully bright.Nico sat in a chair beside Lola’s hospital bed, frowning at his phone as he waited for my reply. But even by nightfall, I still hadn’t answered him.His frown deepened, yet he was so preoccupied that he didn’t even notice Lola opening her eyes and secretly watching him from her bed.All he could think about was the sight of me kneeling on the floor, clutching the broken porcelain fragments with tears in my eyes. His Claire had never looked so vulnerable before, and the thought of my tears made his heart ache with an almost unbearable pain.Unable to sit still any longer, Nico gripped his phone and stood up. He was going back to find me.Just then, Lola, still with her eyes closed as though caught in a nightmare, called out in a tearful voice, “Brother... please don’t leave me here all alone...”Nico stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. She lay curled up in the hospital bed, looking pale and frail. Her brother, Paul,

I didn’t see Nico again over the next few days.Rumors that he had dumped me spread like wildfire throughout the family, but I paid them no mind. Every day, I was busy coordinating the transfer of my assets with my wealth manager and wrapping up my outstanding cases.I had set aside my final day for packing. I didn’t have much to take with me, so I expected to finish in less than half a day.But when I returned to the villa’s study after finishing my work, I found my case files scattered all over the floor, several pages trampled and smeared with dirt.Lola stood in the middle of the room with her head bowed, sobbing quietly. When she heard me open the door, her sobs briefly subsided, and she lifted her tear-streaked face, looking utterly pitiful.“Miss Mercer... I’m sorry...”She was crying so hard that she could barely catch her breath. “I just wanted to look at the figurine... It slipped out of my hand...”Nico stood beside her, his brows knitted tightly together. My gaze passed ove
