Chapter 2

Author: Robin
Nico watched me tap the screen with such a calm expression, and an inexplicable tightness gripped his chest.

His hold on Lola’s wrist loosened slightly. He swallowed and asked, “Who are you messaging?”

“Nothing.” I slipped my phone back into my clutch without looking at him and said calmly, “I’m going out for some air. I’ll leave you all to it.”

Nico’s expression darkened instantly.

I had barely taken a few steps when his cold voice came from behind me.

“Stop.”

I stopped and turned around.

“Apologize to Lola.”

Nico stared at me. “I don’t like the way you’ve been acting tonight.”

The ballroom fell completely silent. Everyone strained to hear what would happen next.

I had once been the woman Nico cherished above all others, the one he couldn’t bear to say a harsh word to. Now, he was forcing me to apologize to someone else.

“No, please, Mr. Moretti!” Lola immediately grabbed Nico’s sleeve, tears streaming down her face.

“Miss Mercer hasn’t said anything wrong. I really don’t belong here. I’m the one who ruined your gala. I’m the one who should be apologizing.”

Before I could stop her, she dropped to her knees in front of me.

“I’m sorry. Please forgive me for not being good enough to be here.”

Her sudden kneeling put me in an impossible position.

She looked fragile, pitiful, and helpless. I was made to look arrogant, cruel, and utterly unreasonable.

Nico’s expression darkened further.

He pulled Lola to her feet and tenderly wiped away her tears. “You did nothing wrong. I’m the one who spoiled Claire.”

Then he turned to me, his voice growing stern.

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

It felt as though something had struck me hard in the chest, leaving a dull, aching pain.

I tightened my grip on my pearl clutch.

Two years ago, our rivals had kidnapped me from my law office and locked me in a basement to force Nico to back down.

Nico had stormed in alone and carried me out, covered in blood.

He had stayed by my hospital bed for three days and three nights, his eyes red with murderous rage. “Anyone who ever makes you suffer will pay with their life.”

Now, the person making me suffer was Nico himself.

“What if I don’t?” I asked, lifting my chin slightly, my gaze defiant.

Nico let out a cold laugh. “Claire, I’ve spoiled you too much.”

He took a step toward me, his presence imposing.

“I’ve spoiled you to the point that you’ve forgotten who you work for. You’re the Moretti family’s legal counsel. Without the Moretti family, do you think you’d be where you are today?”

So that was how he defined our relationship.

I suddenly laughed.

Nico froze. He had never seen me smile like that before, so radiant yet so full of sadness.

“In that case...”

I took the black-diamond-encrusted fountain pen out of my clutch and held it out to Lola.

“Please accept this pen as a token of my apology.”

Lola took a frightened step back and waved her hands frantically. “No! This is far too valuable. I can’t accept it!”

She looked at Nico in alarm.

Nico stared at the pen in my hand, his brows knitting tightly together. “Claire, do you know what you’re giving away?”

It was the birthday gift he had gone out of his way to win for me at Christie’s auction house the previous year. I had carried it with me ever since.

“I know,” I replied, my voice perfectly calm.

“I’m simply expressing my sincere apology.”

Nico’s jaw tightened. He clenched his fist, then slowly relaxed it.

Taking a breath to compose himself, he turned to Lola and softened his voice. “Since she wants you to have it, take it.”

Lola reached out with trembling hands and took the pen. “Thank you.”

I withdrew my hand and looked Nico straight in the eye. “I’ve given her the pen and apologized. Any further instructions, Boss?”

The moment I called him “Boss,” his brow twitched.

He stared at me with a dark expression. I met his gaze without taking back a single word.

He wasn’t wrong. I was the Moretti family’s legal counsel.

He was the Boss, and I was the employee. The distinction was perfectly clear.

His gaze dropped to the hand resting on my clutch, and the displeasure in his eyes deepened.

“That’s all,” he said coldly.

Then he paused before adding stiffly, “I’ll buy you a better one later.”

I smiled faintly. “There’s no need.”

I was leaving soon anyway. It was better to keep the accounts between employer and employee clear.

  • I Left the Don Without a Goodbye   Chapter 9

Three days after Gerald brought me back to New York, he hosted a dinner in my honor. He told me there were many people who wanted to see me.The venue was in Midtown Manhattan. It wasn’t particularly lavish, but the guests were all influential figures in their own right.Among them were Wall Street fund managers, community leaders from Brooklyn, and entrepreneurs who had built their fortunes in the medical device industry. They were all faces I had seen four years earlier at my makeshift legal-aid desk.Back then, they had sat across from me looking so nervous and uneasy that they could barely get their words out. Now, they approached me one after another with drinks in hand, bowing their heads slightly as they greeted me with the words, “Esteemed Attorney Mercer.”Gerald stood beside me and said quietly, “They’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”“Did you arrange all this?”“They wanted to come on their own. I simply let them know.”More than halfway through the dinner, I to

I frowned and studied the man for a couple of seconds before finally remembering where I had seen him.Four years ago, he had sat across from me at the makeshift consultation desk I had set up, wearing a faded shirt and clutching a stack of documents in his hands. He had looked at me helplessly and asked, “I don’t know who else to turn to. Can you help me?”“Gerald Connors,” I said.He smiled and straightened up. “I’m grateful you still remember me.”A startled gasp came from behind me. “Gerald Connors? The tech mogul Mr. Moretti has been trying to work with?”Lola’s voice was sharp, as though she deliberately wanted everyone to hear her. Nico stood nearby, his expression growing darker. The Moretti family had been eager to work with Gerald Connors, but he had never answered Nico’s calls or accepted his invitations.Lola seemed to suddenly understand something. “No wonder Miss Mercer could stay in a refugee camp for so long. It turns out she had someone backing her all along.”Everyone

The day my assignment ended, I slung the same backpack I had brought with me four years earlier over my shoulder and walked out along the muddy road that led away from the camp. When I had first arrived four years ago, no one had come to welcome me. Now, as I left, a line of people stood behind me, watching as I made my way toward the checkpoint at the end of the road. That was when I saw Nico.He was standing outside the checkpoint, looking much thinner than before, his face pale and dark circles beneath his eyes making him look as though he hadn’t slept properly in a very long time. The moment he saw me emerge, he took a step forward.“Claire.”I ignored him and kept walking. He hurried after me, his voice lower and hoarser than I remembered. “I finally found you. Four years, Claire. I’ve been looking for you for four years.”He seemed desperate to pour out everything he had wanted to say over the past few years, all at once.“I’ve prepared a law firm for you, your own law firm. You

Nico’s face was deathly pale, as though his soul had been ripped from his body, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell.Ten days ago. That was when he had taken my venue for Lola. No, it had probably started even earlier, when he repeatedly made me suffer for Lola’s sake. By then, I had already begun planning my departure. That night, I hadn’t argued or made a scene. I had simply watched him leave with another woman in his arms.It was because I no longer cared.Nico sank onto the edge of the bed and pulled the pillow I usually slept on into his arms, clutching it tightly.“No... Claire... You can’t just leave me like this...”He bent forward, burying his face in the pillow as a choked sob escaped him.Nico locked himself in his room for a day and a night. When he finally emerged, his eyes were bloodshot, and he immediately ordered everyone to find me.He instructed the entire family to address me as Donna, even though we had never married.Even though I no longer wanted him.Nico h

The lights in the hospital corridor were painfully bright.Nico sat in a chair beside Lola’s hospital bed, frowning at his phone as he waited for my reply. But even by nightfall, I still hadn’t answered him.His frown deepened, yet he was so preoccupied that he didn’t even notice Lola opening her eyes and secretly watching him from her bed.All he could think about was the sight of me kneeling on the floor, clutching the broken porcelain fragments with tears in my eyes. His Claire had never looked so vulnerable before, and the thought of my tears made his heart ache with an almost unbearable pain.Unable to sit still any longer, Nico gripped his phone and stood up. He was going back to find me.Just then, Lola, still with her eyes closed as though caught in a nightmare, called out in a tearful voice, “Brother... please don’t leave me here all alone...”Nico stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. She lay curled up in the hospital bed, looking pale and frail. Her brother, Paul,

  • I Left the Don Without a Goodbye   Chapter 4

I didn’t see Nico again over the next few days.Rumors that he had dumped me spread like wildfire throughout the family, but I paid them no mind. Every day, I was busy coordinating the transfer of my assets with my wealth manager and wrapping up my outstanding cases.I had set aside my final day for packing. I didn’t have much to take with me, so I expected to finish in less than half a day.But when I returned to the villa’s study after finishing my work, I found my case files scattered all over the floor, several pages trampled and smeared with dirt.Lola stood in the middle of the room with her head bowed, sobbing quietly. When she heard me open the door, her sobs briefly subsided, and she lifted her tear-streaked face, looking utterly pitiful.“Miss Mercer... I’m sorry...”She was crying so hard that she could barely catch her breath. “I just wanted to look at the figurine... It slipped out of my hand...”Nico stood beside her, his brows knitted tightly together. My gaze passed ove
