Chapter 4

Author: Robin
I didn’t see Nico again over the next few days.

Rumors that he had dumped me spread like wildfire throughout the family, but I paid them no mind. Every day, I was busy coordinating the transfer of my assets with my wealth manager and wrapping up my outstanding cases.

I had set aside my final day for packing. I didn’t have much to take with me, so I expected to finish in less than half a day.

But when I returned to the villa’s study after finishing my work, I found my case files scattered all over the floor, several pages trampled and smeared with dirt.

Lola stood in the middle of the room with her head bowed, sobbing quietly. When she heard me open the door, her sobs briefly subsided, and she lifted her tear-streaked face, looking utterly pitiful.

“Miss Mercer... I’m sorry...”

She was crying so hard that she could barely catch her breath. “I just wanted to look at the figurine... It slipped out of my hand...”

Nico stood beside her, his brows knitted tightly together.

My gaze passed over them and fell on the floor, where shattered pieces of porcelain lay scattered everywhere. One fragment had flipped over, revealing half of a tiny set of scales.

My mind went completely blank.

It was the statuette of Lady Justice, the only keepsake my mother had left me.

I rushed over and dropped to my knees, scrambling to pick up the fragments. But the pieces looked as though someone had crushed them under a heavy object, leaving no hope of putting them back together.

“That figurine was kept in the safe.” Without looking up, I asked in a cold voice, “How did you get it out?”

Lola seemed to tremble at my tone and shrank closer to Nico.

Looking at me, Nico appeared increasingly irritated. “I gave her the combination. Lola was just curious about what was inside and wanted to have a look.”

“It’s just a figurine...”

He stopped mid-sentence when he saw my eyes turning red.

I was always composed and serious. I never let myself show weakness in front of others.

“Claire...” Nico immediately panicked. He pushed Lola aside and started toward me, reaching out as if to pull me into his arms.

But before he could take another step, Lola suddenly clutched her chest and collapsed, her face deathly pale.

“Lola!” Nico caught her at once, his expression changing dramatically.

She lay weakly in his arms, whispering, “Mr. Moretti... my chest hurts so much... I didn’t mean to break Miss Mercer’s things...”

Nico frowned and looked at me. “She has a congenital heart condition. She can’t handle you being so cold to her.”

“Claire, you’d better pray she’s all right.”

He scooped Lola into his arms and strode toward the door, stepping on my scattered papers as he went. When he reached the doorway, he stopped and tossed out one last remark without turning around.

“Once Lola is all right, you’re going to the hospital to apologize to her.”

His hurried footsteps faded down the corridor.

I remained kneeling on the floor, the broken porcelain fragments still clutched in my palm. One of the sharp edges had cut my finger at some point, and blood seeped from the wound, dripping onto the floor alongside my tears.

At least today was the day I was leaving.

I wiped away my tears and began picking up my scattered case files one page at a time, brushing off the dirt before stacking them neatly together. Finally, I wrapped the fragments of Lady Justice in a piece of velvet cloth and placed them in my backpack.

I didn’t pack any clothes or take any of the expensive jewelry Nico had given me. Then I left the villa just as I was.

As I was about to board my flight, my phone vibrated.

I took it out and saw Nico’s name on the screen. The phone kept lighting up as I stood motionless, watching his name flash until the screen finally went dark.

A message appeared a moment later.

[I was a little harsh just now. Don’t be upset. The doctor says Lola is fine and just needs to rest. I’ll be staying with her at the hospital for the next few days.]

A few seconds later, another message came through.

[Wait for me to come back.]

I didn’t reply.

I erased everything on my phone, then deactivated my SIM card and walked toward the boarding gate.

And I never looked back.

  • I Left the Don Without a Goodbye   Chapter 9

Three days after Gerald brought me back to New York, he hosted a dinner in my honor. He told me there were many people who wanted to see me.The venue was in Midtown Manhattan. It wasn’t particularly lavish, but the guests were all influential figures in their own right.Among them were Wall Street fund managers, community leaders from Brooklyn, and entrepreneurs who had built their fortunes in the medical device industry. They were all faces I had seen four years earlier at my makeshift legal-aid desk.Back then, they had sat across from me looking so nervous and uneasy that they could barely get their words out. Now, they approached me one after another with drinks in hand, bowing their heads slightly as they greeted me with the words, “Esteemed Attorney Mercer.”Gerald stood beside me and said quietly, “They’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”“Did you arrange all this?”“They wanted to come on their own. I simply let them know.”More than halfway through the dinner, I to

I frowned and studied the man for a couple of seconds before finally remembering where I had seen him.Four years ago, he had sat across from me at the makeshift consultation desk I had set up, wearing a faded shirt and clutching a stack of documents in his hands. He had looked at me helplessly and asked, “I don’t know who else to turn to. Can you help me?”“Gerald Connors,” I said.He smiled and straightened up. “I’m grateful you still remember me.”A startled gasp came from behind me. “Gerald Connors? The tech mogul Mr. Moretti has been trying to work with?”Lola’s voice was sharp, as though she deliberately wanted everyone to hear her. Nico stood nearby, his expression growing darker. The Moretti family had been eager to work with Gerald Connors, but he had never answered Nico’s calls or accepted his invitations.Lola seemed to suddenly understand something. “No wonder Miss Mercer could stay in a refugee camp for so long. It turns out she had someone backing her all along.”Everyone

The day my assignment ended, I slung the same backpack I had brought with me four years earlier over my shoulder and walked out along the muddy road that led away from the camp. When I had first arrived four years ago, no one had come to welcome me. Now, as I left, a line of people stood behind me, watching as I made my way toward the checkpoint at the end of the road. That was when I saw Nico.He was standing outside the checkpoint, looking much thinner than before, his face pale and dark circles beneath his eyes making him look as though he hadn’t slept properly in a very long time. The moment he saw me emerge, he took a step forward.“Claire.”I ignored him and kept walking. He hurried after me, his voice lower and hoarser than I remembered. “I finally found you. Four years, Claire. I’ve been looking for you for four years.”He seemed desperate to pour out everything he had wanted to say over the past few years, all at once.“I’ve prepared a law firm for you, your own law firm. You

Nico’s face was deathly pale, as though his soul had been ripped from his body, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell.Ten days ago. That was when he had taken my venue for Lola. No, it had probably started even earlier, when he repeatedly made me suffer for Lola’s sake. By then, I had already begun planning my departure. That night, I hadn’t argued or made a scene. I had simply watched him leave with another woman in his arms.It was because I no longer cared.Nico sank onto the edge of the bed and pulled the pillow I usually slept on into his arms, clutching it tightly.“No... Claire... You can’t just leave me like this...”He bent forward, burying his face in the pillow as a choked sob escaped him.Nico locked himself in his room for a day and a night. When he finally emerged, his eyes were bloodshot, and he immediately ordered everyone to find me.He instructed the entire family to address me as Donna, even though we had never married.Even though I no longer wanted him.Nico h

The lights in the hospital corridor were painfully bright.Nico sat in a chair beside Lola’s hospital bed, frowning at his phone as he waited for my reply. But even by nightfall, I still hadn’t answered him.His frown deepened, yet he was so preoccupied that he didn’t even notice Lola opening her eyes and secretly watching him from her bed.All he could think about was the sight of me kneeling on the floor, clutching the broken porcelain fragments with tears in my eyes. His Claire had never looked so vulnerable before, and the thought of my tears made his heart ache with an almost unbearable pain.Unable to sit still any longer, Nico gripped his phone and stood up. He was going back to find me.Just then, Lola, still with her eyes closed as though caught in a nightmare, called out in a tearful voice, “Brother... please don’t leave me here all alone...”Nico stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. She lay curled up in the hospital bed, looking pale and frail. Her brother, Paul,
