Chapter 2

Author: Goodtale
The aircraft started to shudder, and the engines came up into a roar.

We were already being prepared for takeoff.

Reyes's chest was rising and falling fast.

"Everyone stay calm.

"I'm going forward to ask the captain to hold departure."

She'd barely finished when a man in a suit a few rows up frowned.

"I have somewhere I need to be.

"You're going to hold an entire plane because of this?"

A woman near him agreed.

"Seriously. You're going to take two kids running their mouths at face value?

"Where would a couple of teenagers even get a bomb?"

The man sitting next to Ryan simply took both of their carry-ons, pulled the zippers open and tipped them out onto the floor.

Chargers, snacks, the whole lot of it scattered across the aisle.

"There's nothing. Two kids with a bad case of main-character syndrome.

"I don't know what any of you are so worked up about."

The cabin breathed out.

Somebody swore under their breath.

"Can the parents handle their own children, please?"

"Doing it for attention. It's embarrassing."

Ryan's face soured. He gave a short laugh, unwilling to be the one who backed down.

"You think I'm joking?"

He pointed at Daniel. He didn't raise his voice, but every word landed clean.

"My dad runs the blasting crew at a mine.

"You think it's difficult for me to get hold of that stuff?"

Sophie pulled a tablet out of her bag, swiped it open and held it up for the whole cabin to see.

A university staff directory page, with Laura's photograph in the middle of it.

"My mom does research in a university chemistry lab.

"I can walk into that lab and take whatever I want. It's easy."

Someone looked her up on their phone and made a noise out loud.

"It's real."

Sophie was enjoying herself now. She pulled up a video and lifted it over her head.

"We've been working on this for three years. The whole experiment log is in here.

"You think we're playing?"

On the screen were bottles turned label-out to the camera, chemical names printed across them, and the two of them holding what looked like detonators.

Every face in the cabin changed.

A second later the wheels left the runway and the aircraft climbed hard.

The cabin came apart immediately. People kept getting up. Everyone crowded together.

The flight attendants called for order and not one person listened.

Ryan looked out at the mess of it and smiled.

He turned to Sophie.

"How long left?"

Sophie called out the count, loud enough for half the plane.

"Two minutes gone.

"Three minutes until it goes off."

Ryan ran his tongue over his lip.

"I can't wait.

"Let's all go together, everybody.

"Going out inside fireworks like that — honestly, you're getting a bargain."

An older woman a few rows up, Eleanor Pike, put a hand flat against her chest and began to cry.

"I have a heart condition.

"My heart can't take this."

Ryan was grinning.

"Don't be scared, ma'am.

"If it comes to it, you won't even feel anything. It's over in a second."

Sophie chimed in.

"Right. Much more comfortable than a heart attack."

Her son had heard enough. He came down the aisle and took Ryan by the collar.

"Say one more word. Go on."

Laura was up out of her seat and in front of her son.

"What do you think you're doing! He's a child!"

Daniel came over and shoved him back.

"My son just got into Hartwell.

"You put a hand on him and see what happens."

The man was shaking with it.

"Your whole family is insane."

I sat by the window and never said a word, start to finish.

In my previous life I'd been exactly as frantic as Doug Pike was now — arguing, denying, throwing myself in front of it.

And Ryan and Sophie had turned straight around and played the victim for the camera.

Said their aunt was unstable. Said she had to control everything.

When they held me under the water, Daniel and Laura were standing a few yards up the beach, watching their children with that fond look on their faces.

Three minutes in, when my lungs filled and I fought hard enough that the two of them couldn't keep me down, my brother came over and helped.

When Ryan and Sophie were brought in, the sound of the leg irons dragging carried the length of the courtroom. Both of them were in detention-issue vests, and both of their faces had gone gray. There was a bruise on Ryan's forehead where he'd knocked it in the cell. The gallery was full — passengers from the flight, and reporters. The moment the two of them came through the door an older man stood straight up."Animals!"A bailiff cut him off."The gallery will remain silent."Ryan was taken to the defense table. He looked out across the room once, and the corners of his mouth pulled down.He recanted as soon as proceedings opened."We were filming a video. It was a joke."We never intended to set anything off."Sophie cried along with it, her voice thin and fast."He's my older brother. He's pressured me since we were small."Every part of the plan was Ryan forcing me into it."Ryan detonated at the table and twisted around at her."Don't you dare play the victim!"Th

The next morning I sent my parents one message."I'm working on the money. Stop making scenes for now — the more noise there is, the worse it gets for the kids."The reply came in under five seconds."Good girl. Your mother knew you'd soften.""Your father didn't raise you for nothing."I looked at those two lines for a long time. The only person who got my new number was Detective Ortiz. When my parents worked out they couldn't reach me, they brought several relatives down to my office and waited for me there.Building security stopped them in the lobby. My mother's voice carried through every floor of it."My daughter took the money and ran!"She's destroyed my grandchildren!"And now she won't even acknowledge her own mother and father!"Somebody in the office

The second I was out of the station the phone started going in my pocket and wouldn't stop.I took it out. The family group had detonated. The messages came through so fast the screen locked up.When it recovered, Marilyn's voice notes started jumping out one after another."Claire, how can you be so cold-blooded?"That's your own nephew and niece and you won't lift a finger for them?"Frank came in behind her."How much could a trip out of the country really cost you?"Now the kids will carry a record for life. Can you pay for that?"I stood in the station doorway and took a photo of the airport's one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar loss sheet and posted it.Straight after it, the clip of Ryan and Sophie on the plane saying it would go off first and burn after. Then one line."The law doesn't care who's related to whom."The group went quiet for less than three seconds. Then somebody else jumped in."You still can't just stand by and do nothing. The moment the police had Ryan and Sophie secured, Laura went off first. She rushed them, screaming."He's still a kid! What do you think you're doing!"Daniel grabbed her to hold her back. She turned and backhanded him across the face, flat and hard."You useless piece of nothing!"Your son is being arrested and you're standing there?"Daniel's head snapped sideways. He didn't dare say one word.Ryan was held down with his cheek against the floor, shouting himself raw."I'm a Hartwell freshman!"My future is gone and you people can't pay for it!"Sophie was so frightened she wet herself. A dark patch spread down her jeans and her makeup ran everywhere. She held her phone up and screamed into the screen."I'm live! Police brutality! You all saw that, didn't you!"That one sentence set the passengers off.A man who'd been holding it in the whole flight came through and put a boot into Ryan's side.An officer hauled him back, and there was no holding the rest of them.Th

Laura gave a cold little snort and pulled both children behind her."Naturally. We raised them right."The search ran on past twenty minutes.Every bag in the holding area was opened. The aircraft was checked section by section.Nash and the police stood with their heads together, and the air kept getting heavier.Sophie leaned toward Ryan's ear and said it at just the volume that carried."They don't actually think we brought something on board, do they?"The two of them doubled over laughing until there were tears in their eyes. Then the announcement came."We apologize for the disruption to your travel."Following a joint inspection by airport security and law enforcement, we can confirm there are no dangerous items aboard the aircraft."The holding area erupted.Ryan suddenly bolted out into the middle of the floor with his phone up over his head, shouting."Happy graduation!"Happy graduation, everybody!"The whole room stared at them, blank.Sophie was right behin
