Chapter 3

Autor: Goodtale
"Claire, don't be a killjoy. The kids are filming their graduation video."

Thirty minutes later my body came up. They took hold of my hair and mugged for the camera over it.

Once they understood I'd actually drowned, the family panicked for about a minute. Then, without hesitating, they tied stones all over me and pushed me out into deep water.

"Claire, the kids didn't know any better. Don't hold it against them."

"Your life for the futures of two Hartwell students. That's a fair trade."

I died on that beach.

This time, whatever they do, I'm not getting involved.

Over on the other side of the aisle, Ryan climbed up onto his seat and announced it to the whole cabin.

"Consider this a free lesson.

"Not everybody in this world wants to be a good little student."

Sophie held her tablet up and turned a slow circle with it, filming, giggling.

"Look at them.

"Look at these faces. All of them terrified of dying.

"It's kind of pathetic."

Somebody shouted that they were calling the police.

Ryan laughed out loud.

"Go ahead and call.

"What are they going to do, fly up here and arrest me?"

Sophie came down to my row and put the camera in my face.

"Claire, are you scared?

"You're thirty and you've still never had a boyfriend.

"You're about to die without ever finding out what a man's like."

Laura gave her a theatrical glare.

"Sophie. That's no way to talk to your aunt.

"She's the one paying for this trip."

Sophie's mouth twisted.

"It's the old maid's money. Might as well spend it."

I looked at her. My voice came out level.

"I've never found out. You seem to find out pretty often."

Sophie's face changed.

Laura shrieked.

"How dare you talk to my daughter like that! She's still a child!"

Daniel's face went dark too.

"Claire, don't think spending a bit of money buys you the right to talk down to me."

I nearly laughed.

I pay to take this entire family on vacation, I get humiliated, and I'm not allowed to answer back.

That was when the captain came over the intercom.

"Due to a security threat on board, this aircraft will be diverting for an emergency landing.

"Please return to your seats and remain calm."

Ryan and Sophie looked at each other, lit up with it.

"It worked!"

When we came down, both sides of the runway were lined with vehicles and people.

The doors opened and staff began moving us off.

Passengers were taken from the aircraft in groups and walked into a secured holding area.

Sophie filmed the whole way, laughing as she went.

"Guys, are you seeing this? They landed an entire plane for us.

"Tell me that isn't a flex."

Ryan was breakdancing in front of the airport staff, floor spins and all.

Daniel and Laura had their phones out too.

"Look how sharp our kids are.

"One sentence and the plane turns around.

"It'd be a waste if he doesn't end up flying them himself."

I stood behind them and said nothing.

Sophie looked back at me and winked.

"Claire, you look awful.

"Did we scare you?"

Laura smoothed her daughter's hair.

"She's got no man standing behind her. Of course she's timid."

I didn't say a word.

A man in an airport polo came over — the duty manager, Victor Nash — and pointed at me.

"Are you family to these two?"

Before I could open my mouth, Daniel got there first.

"That's right. She's their aunt.

"She arranged this whole trip. We just came along for the ride."

Laura nodded quickly.

"She booked the flights and the hotel.

"We didn't know anything about any of it."

Ryan spread his hands, wide-eyed and innocent.

"Claire said she was taking us out to relax now that exams were over.

"She told us we could do whatever we wanted."

Sophie rushed to back him up.

"Exactly. She's the one who taught us."

Every face in the room turned to me.

Blame, fury — enough of it to burn me where I stood.

I closed my fists.

"I never said any of that."

I pointed at Daniel and Laura.

"Those two are their legal guardians.

"Every bit of the responsibility for this sits with them."

Daniel's brow came down.

"Claire, what kind of attitude is that?

"That's your own nephew and niece. You're really not going to help?"

I gave him a thin smile.

"Help with what? The kids got into Hartwell. They've turned out so well.

"All the credit goes to their parents."

Trouble found Ryan on his first day inside. He was put on a wing with men serving long sentences. In the dinner line somebody came into him from behind. His tray went across the floor and hot soup went down his chest. He'd barely started to swear when a boot caught him behind the knee and put him on the ground with his face against the grease. The man who ran the room came over and rested a foot on the back of his head, and there was a smile in his voice."Hartwell boy."Let's hear you beg."Ryan struggled to lift his head and was pushed back down.Once.Twice.In the end he begged. The room laughed. After that he was everybody's errand boy.Scrubbing toilets. Emptying buckets. Washing other men's underwear. If he was slow, wet laundry came back across his face."Do it properly, genius."He learned not to lift his head and not to answer back.Every night he curled into the corner of his bunk with the blanket over his head and ran it back again — himself standing on an

When Ryan and Sophie were brought in, the sound of the leg irons dragging carried the length of the courtroom. Both of them were in detention-issue vests, and both of their faces had gone gray. There was a bruise on Ryan's forehead where he'd knocked it in the cell. The gallery was full — passengers from the flight, and reporters. The moment the two of them came through the door an older man stood straight up."Animals!"A bailiff cut him off."The gallery will remain silent."Ryan was taken to the defense table. He looked out across the room once, and the corners of his mouth pulled down.He recanted as soon as proceedings opened."We were filming a video. It was a joke."We never intended to set anything off."Sophie cried along with it, her voice thin and fast."He's my older brother. He's pressured me since we were small."Every part of the plan was Ryan forcing me into it."Ryan detonated at the table and twisted around at her."Don't you dare play the victim!"Th

The next morning I sent my parents one message."I'm working on the money. Stop making scenes for now — the more noise there is, the worse it gets for the kids."The reply came in under five seconds."Good girl. Your mother knew you'd soften.""Your father didn't raise you for nothing."I looked at those two lines for a long time. Then I locked the phone and went in to work.I put in for my annual leave.Called an agent and listed the apartment as a short-term rental.Moved into Nadia's place.Every call from a relative went unanswered. The only person who got my new number was Detective Ortiz. When my parents worked out they couldn't reach me, they brought several relatives down to my office and waited for me there.Building security stopped them in the lobby. My mother's voice carried through every floor of it."My daughter took the money and ran!"She's destroyed my grandchildren!"And now she won't even acknowledge her own mother and father!"Somebody in the office

The second I was out of the station the phone started going in my pocket and wouldn't stop.I took it out. The family group had detonated. The messages came through so fast the screen locked up.When it recovered, Marilyn's voice notes started jumping out one after another."Claire, how can you be so cold-blooded?"That's your own nephew and niece and you won't lift a finger for them?"Frank came in behind her."How much could a trip out of the country really cost you?"Now the kids will carry a record for life. Can you pay for that?"I stood in the station doorway and took a photo of the airport's one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar loss sheet and posted it.Straight after it, the clip of Ryan and Sophie on the plane saying it would go off first and burn after. Then one line."The law doesn't care who's related to whom."The group went quiet for less than three seconds. Then somebody else jumped in."You still can't just stand by and do nothing. The moment the police had Ryan and Sophie secured, Laura went off first. She rushed them, screaming."He's still a kid! What do you think you're doing!"Daniel grabbed her to hold her back. She turned and backhanded him across the face, flat and hard."You useless piece of nothing!"Your son is being arrested and you're standing there?"Daniel's head snapped sideways. He didn't dare say one word.Ryan was held down with his cheek against the floor, shouting himself raw."I'm a Hartwell freshman!"My future is gone and you people can't pay for it!"Sophie was so frightened she wet herself. A dark patch spread down her jeans and her makeup ran everywhere. She held her phone up and screamed into the screen."I'm live! Police brutality! You all saw that, didn't you!"That one sentence set the passengers off.A man who'd been holding it in the whole flight came through and put a boot into Ryan's side.An officer hauled him back, and there was no holding the rest of them.Th

Laura gave a cold little snort and pulled both children behind her."Naturally. We raised them right."The search ran on past twenty minutes.Every bag in the holding area was opened. The aircraft was checked section by section.Nash and the police stood with their heads together, and the air kept getting heavier.Sophie leaned toward Ryan's ear and said it at just the volume that carried."They don't actually think we brought something on board, do they?"The two of them doubled over laughing until there were tears in their eyes. Then the announcement came."We apologize for the disruption to your travel."Following a joint inspection by airport security and law enforcement, we can confirm there are no dangerous items aboard the aircraft."The holding area erupted.Ryan suddenly bolted out into the middle of the floor with his phone up over his head, shouting."Happy graduation!"Happy graduation, everybody!"The whole room stared at them, blank.Sophie was right behin
