Chapter 4

Autor: Goodtale
Laura gave a cold little snort and pulled both children behind her.

"Naturally. We raised them right."

The search ran on past twenty minutes.

Every bag in the holding area was opened. The aircraft was checked section by section.

Nash and the police stood with their heads together, and the air kept getting heavier.

Sophie leaned toward Ryan's ear and said it at just the volume that carried.

"They don't actually think we brought something on board, do they?"

The two of them doubled over laughing until there were tears in their eyes.

Then the announcement came.

"We apologize for the disruption to your travel.

"Following a joint inspection by airport security and law enforcement, we can confirm there are no dangerous items aboard the aircraft."

The holding area erupted.

Ryan suddenly bolted out into the middle of the floor with his phone up over his head, shouting.

"Happy graduation!

"Happy graduation, everybody!"

The whole room stared at them, blank.

Sophie was right behind him, screaming it, her face flushed.

"Remember the name, people — Clearwater High, senior class, incoming Hartwell freshmen!

"Follow us!

"We just gave a whole plane a surprise turnaround. Is that a flex or is that a flex?"

Ryan ran up to Nash and put the camera right in his face, laughing so hard he was crying.

"Happy graduation! Having fun there, buddy?

"Look at the state of all of you. You actually thought we had a bomb!"

Sophie stood in front of me, giggling.

"This is what being young is supposed to look like.

"Wild. Unrepeatable. This is our one shot at it.

"You never had a youth like this, Claire. That's exactly why nobody wanted you."

Laura couldn't stop smiling.

"These two little monsters.

"All this just to celebrate graduating."

Daniel looked openly proud of himself.

"That's my kids for you. Creative.

"Everybody else takes a group photo, has a meal, and that's graduation.

"Mine got an entire airport to celebrate with them.

"Look how happy they are. If you're not a little wild at that age, when are you?"

When Ryan had had his fill he put the phone away and clapped Nash on the shoulder.

"All right. We've had our fun.

"Get us back in the air. We've still got Hawaii to get to."

Nobody moved.

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

"What? Don't tell me you're actually angry.

"It's not that big a deal."

Sophie waved the tablet at them.

"Fine, fine. We made you all do a bit of extra work.

"But it's graduation, come on.

"Tell you what, I'll thank you in the edit. Get the airport a bit of exposure, bring you some business. Happy now?"

The hall stayed dead silent. Still nobody spoke.

For the first time, the smiles on both their faces slipped.

Then, from outside, came fast, even footsteps.

Armed tactical officers came through the doors and had the area surrounded in seconds.

The cuffs came down and both of them went to the floor.

Muzzles level with their heads.

Laura screamed and was shouted down immediately.

"Quiet! Anyone who moves gets treated the same way!"

Ryan roared from the floor.

"I'm a Hartwell student—"

One of the officers spoke, cold and flat.

"You fabricated and deliberately spread a terror threat. You caused mass public panic.

"You forced an emergency diversion and severe disruption of airport operations.

"That's a felony. You're being taken into custody."

Nash walked over to Daniel and Laura with a long printed sheet.

"The diversion cost for this flight. Compensation for stranded passengers.

"Losses on the cancelled onward flights. Escalated security costs.

"The preliminary total is one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

"Sign to acknowledge receipt, and wait for the civil filing."

In that moment the blood went out of Daniel's and Laura's faces.

On the floor, Ryan and Sophie finally looked afraid.

Trouble found Ryan on his first day inside. He was put on a wing with men serving long sentences. In the dinner line somebody came into him from behind. His tray went across the floor and hot soup went down his chest. He'd barely started to swear when a boot caught him behind the knee and put him on the ground with his face against the grease. The man who ran the room came over and rested a foot on the back of his head, and there was a smile in his voice."Hartwell boy."Let's hear you beg."Ryan struggled to lift his head and was pushed back down.Once.Twice.In the end he begged. The room laughed. After that he was everybody's errand boy.Scrubbing toilets. Emptying buckets. Washing other men's underwear. If he was slow, wet laundry came back across his face."Do it properly, genius."He learned not to lift his head and not to answer back.Every night he curled into the corner of his bunk with the blanket over his head and ran it back again — himself standing on an

When Ryan and Sophie were brought in, the sound of the leg irons dragging carried the length of the courtroom. Both of them were in detention-issue vests, and both of their faces had gone gray. There was a bruise on Ryan's forehead where he'd knocked it in the cell. The gallery was full — passengers from the flight, and reporters. The moment the two of them came through the door an older man stood straight up."Animals!"A bailiff cut him off."The gallery will remain silent."Ryan was taken to the defense table. He looked out across the room once, and the corners of his mouth pulled down.He recanted as soon as proceedings opened."We were filming a video. It was a joke."We never intended to set anything off."Sophie cried along with it, her voice thin and fast."He's my older brother. He's pressured me since we were small."Every part of the plan was Ryan forcing me into it."Ryan detonated at the table and twisted around at her."Don't you dare play the victim!"Th

The next morning I sent my parents one message."I'm working on the money. Stop making scenes for now — the more noise there is, the worse it gets for the kids."The reply came in under five seconds."Good girl. Your mother knew you'd soften.""Your father didn't raise you for nothing."I looked at those two lines for a long time. Then I locked the phone and went in to work.I put in for my annual leave.Called an agent and listed the apartment as a short-term rental.Moved into Nadia's place.Every call from a relative went unanswered. The only person who got my new number was Detective Ortiz. When my parents worked out they couldn't reach me, they brought several relatives down to my office and waited for me there.Building security stopped them in the lobby. My mother's voice carried through every floor of it."My daughter took the money and ran!"She's destroyed my grandchildren!"And now she won't even acknowledge her own mother and father!"Somebody in the office

The second I was out of the station the phone started going in my pocket and wouldn't stop.I took it out. The family group had detonated. The messages came through so fast the screen locked up.When it recovered, Marilyn's voice notes started jumping out one after another."Claire, how can you be so cold-blooded?"That's your own nephew and niece and you won't lift a finger for them?"Frank came in behind her."How much could a trip out of the country really cost you?"Now the kids will carry a record for life. Can you pay for that?"I stood in the station doorway and took a photo of the airport's one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar loss sheet and posted it.Straight after it, the clip of Ryan and Sophie on the plane saying it would go off first and burn after. Then one line."The law doesn't care who's related to whom."The group went quiet for less than three seconds. Then somebody else jumped in."You still can't just stand by and do nothing. They only just got int

The moment the police had Ryan and Sophie secured, Laura went off first. She rushed them, screaming."He's still a kid! What do you think you're doing!"Daniel grabbed her to hold her back. She turned and backhanded him across the face, flat and hard."You useless piece of nothing!"Your son is being arrested and you're standing there?"Daniel's head snapped sideways. He didn't dare say one word.Ryan was held down with his cheek against the floor, shouting himself raw."I'm a Hartwell freshman!"My future is gone and you people can't pay for it!"Sophie was so frightened she wet herself. A dark patch spread down her jeans and her makeup ran everywhere. She held her phone up and screamed into the screen."I'm live! Police brutality! You all saw that, didn't you!"That one sentence set the passengers off.A man who'd been holding it in the whole flight came through and put a boot into Ryan's side.An officer hauled him back, and there was no holding the rest of them.Th
