Chapter 3

Auteur: Cece West
Ailara's POV

At the treatment center, I dutifully arranged everything for Freya.

Meanwhile, she typed away at her phone, telling Lucian about how she was uneasy about being alone with me.

Right before her treatment was about to start, Lucian arrived, having clearly rushed here.

"How are you feeling? Still unwell? I shouldn't have asked Ailara to accompany you here."

His tone was full of concern for Freya, completely ignoring all that I had done for her since we came to the treatment center.

"Don't say that. Although Ailara can be a little cold toward me, she's still done a lot for me."

Her kind, understanding words failed to dispel Lucian's displeasure toward me. Frowning, he retorted disdainfully, "At least she still has some use."

I wasn't bothered by how he looked down on me. All I did was hand over the herbs the healer had given me.

"You should stay here and keep Freya company. The healer says that the presence of someone from an Alpha's bloodline can help stabilize her wolf spirit."

Lucian whipped his head around to stare at me with extreme shock.

However, I didn't linger and turned to leave.

After departing the treatment center, I headed to Morington, one of the neutral territories around. Once our mate bond broke, I would need a place to stay, and a neutral area was my best option.

Following that, I returned home, where I began packing the last of my belongings.

Photos of us, a flower crown, a wolf-fang necklace, a moonstone ring—I tossed every single gift Lucian had ever given me into the fireplace.

As the blazing flames danced about, they swiftly devoured everything until nothing but ashes remained.

…

That night, Lucian came to my room. He swept a casual glance about, only then realizing that something was off.

"Where's the photo of us at our bonding ceremony? Didn't you use to hang it on the wall?"

"I kept it away in the storage room," I answered casually. "The guest bedroom's walls are too small to hang such a huge photo."

Lucian nodded, not pressing the matter. Instead, he instructed me, "The weather's turning chilly. Freya can't afford to be affected by the cold, so remember to prepare some appropriate clothing for her."

Dipping my head in understanding, I immediately logged into a luxury brand's online shop and placed over a dozen orders for Freya.

Lucian smiled in satisfaction at my swift action.

"Ailara, you've been doing quite well recently. Once our pup is born, I'll appoint him as my heir."

Our pup…

The word had a wave of bitterness welling in me. As it turned out, he still didn't know that our pup was gone.

The flashing of my phone screen dragged me out of my thoughts. Glancing at it, I saw that Freya had sent me an audio recording.

The instant I played it, Freya's despondent voice came over the speakers. She was complaining about how her wolf spirit was too weak, so she could never control her transformation.

Lucian comforted her in an oh-so-gentle tone, "Don't stress about it so much. Take it slow. I'll be with you every step of the way."

Once again, I found my mind drifting to past memories.

Back during the early stages of my Awakening, my wolf spirit wasn't fully developed yet, so I had had similar problems with controlling my transformation.

At the time, Lucian had simply watched coldly from the sidelines as I practiced over and over again. Not once had he ever given me any suggestions or tips. On the contrary, he would even say that, as the Luna, overcoming this bit of difficulty was the least I should be able to do.

Now, I realized that when it was Freya having this problem, he suddenly had infinite patience and gentleness to guide her.

Ailara's POVBut fate had other plans. That day, after brewing a remedy for the Alpha of a small pack, I stepped outside and found Lucian standing there. He looked gaunt and haggard, his once-straight posture slumped as though something had weighed him down. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked nothing like the proud, confident Alpha Lucian I had once known. Lucian stood a short distance away, hesitating. He didn't dare come any closer to me. I didn't bother speaking to him, either. Without so much as a glance, I turned and walked away. Lucian hurried after me and caught up. Still, he didn't dare touch me. He hesitated for a while before finally speaking, his voice trembling. "Ailara… It's been three years. I finally found you."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. Had it really been that long?"How's Freya?" I asked. By now, she had probably gotten what she'd always wanted and become Luna.Pain flashed in Lucian's eyes as he pleaded, "Ailara, please, don't

Ailara's POVOnce I settled down in Morington, life fell into a quiet rhythm. Every day, I did little more than visit Hazel Thornfield, the healer, and work on restoring my wolf. When my final treatment was over, Hazel stopped me. "Ailara, your wolf is healthy now, but you're still wasting away inside. Whatever happened in the past, you still need to figure out where you want to go from here."It was something I had never even considered. Lucian and I had grown up together, and from an early age, I had known I'd one day become his Luna. All I had to do was help the Alpha lead the pack. I had never stopped to ask myself what I wanted. After I left the pack, I felt lost, like a traveler wandering through fog with no idea which way to turn. Hazel sighed when she saw me like that. Then, she said, "If you'd like, you can learn from me. Healers are needed throughout the neutral territories. Once you're trained, you could become a healer yourself."Until then, becoming a healer had

Third-Person POVAll at once, Lucian snapped. He stormed into the Luna's quarters and dragged Freya out. Moments ago, she had been dreaming of becoming the true Luna. Freya was visibly shaken, but she still kept up her helpless act. "What happened, Alpha Lucian? Is Ailara back? Is she mad at me? I can apologize to her. Please, calm down.""Shut up!" Lucian roared. He threw her to the floor, and his eyes blazed with fury. "An apology isn't enough. You deserve to die for what you've done! "You got Ethan killed, and you incited a riot that killed my pup! You're a monster! You deserve to be cursed by the Moon Goddess!"Lucian threw the evidence in Freya's face. Freya opened her mouth to defend herself, but the moment she saw what was on the papers, she froze. She knew everything she had done had come to light. If that was the case, there was no point keeping up the act anymore. Freya got to her feet before dusting herself off. She sneered and said, "I admit I started the riot.

Third-Person POVLucian stumbled back to the house and rushed into the Luna's quarters, only to be met by a scent that wasn't Ailara's. That was when he remembered he'd assigned the room to Freya. His face went deathly pale as he staggered toward the guest room. He pushed the door open and found that the room was empty. Every trace of Ailara was gone. Then, Lucian remembered something else. He rushed to the storage room, searching for the framed photograph Ailara had told him about. But the moment he saw what was inside, he froze in the doorway, unable to take another step. In the dim storage room, the huge framed photograph stood in the corner. However, Ailara's half had been cut away, leaving only Lucian in his formal attire. Memories came rushing back. Ailara and Lucian had taken the photograph during their marking ceremony. That day, they'd sworn never to betray each other. If either of them ever betrayed the other, they would cut the photograph in two and never see

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, at the Lunar Palace, Lucian felt the mate bond snap. He staggered and grabbed the back of a chair. Pain surged through him, so intense it felt as though his body were being torn apart. "Ailara…"Her name escaped his lips before he could stop himself. Sensing something was wrong, Freya hurried over to steady him. "Alpha Lucian, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" she asked, feigning concern. Lucian stared at the doorway, yet Ailara was no longer there. He had never felt this anxious before. "My mate bond with Ailara… It's been severed."A hint of delight flashed in Freya's eyes, but she quickly bit her lip. Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed Lucian's sleeve. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't accidentally gotten Ailara's dress dirty, she wouldn't have lost it. But she's being unreasonable. How could she sever her mate bond with you over something so trivial?"Lucian clenched his fists. When he spoke, his voice came out strained. The ca

Ailara's POVSeveral days later, to celebrate the pack not losing anyone during the berserk outbreak on the night of the full moon, the pack threw a grand feast. As the Alpha and Luna of the pack, Lucian and I had to attend together. However, once I had changed into my gown, I suddenly received a message from him."Why is it that I can't seem to sense you over the mate bond and can only contact you using my phone?"Anyway, after what happened with the Gamma warriors the other day, Freya is utterly terrified to face them alone. I have to accompany her, so you can just head inside yourself."There were no more messages after that. It seemed like Lucian didn't even care why he couldn't seem to feel our mate bond.I stared at my reflection in the mirror, noting the unhealthy pallor to my skin, and found this all so laughable.During that terrible night, my pup was the only one who died. Yet, no one seemed to care about that, nor did they wonder just what sort of suffering I was curr
