Chapter 2

Auteur: Cece West
Ailara's POV

When I didn't respond, Lucian became even angrier. "Why are you always fighting with Freya over the smallest matters? You clearly know how pitiful she is. As the pack's Luna, you should be showing some sympathy toward her.

"Due to the shock she received, her wolf spirit is still quite unstable. I have to handle some pack matters tomorrow, so you'll have to take her to the healer to soothe her wolf spirit."

I slowly turned to look at him, taking in the worry that marred his handsome features because of Freya.

"Alright."

Lucian likely hadn't expected that I would agree so easily, appearing momentarily stunned. However, my compliance pleased him, as he thought that I was finally being more understanding.

"That's more like it. Ailara, you're with pup now, so you need to set a good example. From now on, you need to stop being so petty. And stop picking on Freya."

With that, he turned and left.

Seconds later, the sound of him gently coaxing Freya drifted to my ears.

I sat up calmly and began to pack my things, stuffing all of my clothes into a cardboard box.

At that moment, Lucian's voice rang out in the living room. "The healer says that the Luna's suite will help stabilize your wolf spirit. This isn't a joking matter, so you have to move in there."

Freya replied tearfully, "But that's Ailara's bedroom. I can't do that!"

"That's just what she's supposed to do! Back then, the Frostmoon pack ambushed us, and Ethan, my poor older brother, lost his life while saving me. Before he died, his only wish was that I would take good care of you. As my Luna, it's simply Ailara's duty to take care of you alongside me."

Then, in a tone that left no room for argument, he finished with, "You have to move into that suite!"

"Just move in."

I took a few steps forward so that they could see me.

A trace of guilt flashed in Lucian's eyes, but when he realized what I had said, that guilt swiftly transformed into satisfaction.

"Hear that, Freya? That should ease your worries. Ailara herself has agreed to you moving in there."

Freya didn't immediately respond. Instead, she stared at me warily, as though wondering if I had done something to the suite.

"Ailara, why would you suddenly…"

Because I no longer cared.

Nonetheless, I didn't say that. Expression indifferent, I simply told them what they most wanted to hear. "Alpha Lucian is right. As his Luna, this is just what I should do."

That night, I moved out of the Luna's suite and into a tiny, cramped guest bedroom, while Freya finally got to stay in the room she had been dreaming of.

…

The next day, I sought out Freya, who was happily trying on the gowns in the suite's closet.

"We should be heading out for the healers."

On the way to the treatment center, Freya sat beside me, hands incessantly fiddling with a ring. A moment later, the ring slipped from her hands and rolled over to my feet.

"Oops!" She gave a theatrical gasp, then shot me a conflicted look. "Ailara, Alpha Lucian insisted on giving me the ring symbolizing the Luna's status. Please don't get mad at him."

What a clever tactic—pretending to talk me out of it while sowing discord between us at the same time.

I gazed forward, not a hint of emotion tinging my voice as I said, "Don't worry. I won't get mad at him."

After all, that ring was going to be hers soon anyway.

With Freya watching me resentfully, I calmly opened the car door. "We're here. Let's go."

Ailara's POVBut fate had other plans. That day, after brewing a remedy for the Alpha of a small pack, I stepped outside and found Lucian standing there. He looked gaunt and haggard, his once-straight posture slumped as though something had weighed him down. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked nothing like the proud, confident Alpha Lucian I had once known. Lucian stood a short distance away, hesitating. He didn't dare come any closer to me. I didn't bother speaking to him, either. Without so much as a glance, I turned and walked away. Lucian hurried after me and caught up. Still, he didn't dare touch me. He hesitated for a while before finally speaking, his voice trembling. "Ailara… It's been three years. I finally found you."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. Had it really been that long?"How's Freya?" I asked. By now, she had probably gotten what she'd always wanted and become Luna.Pain flashed in Lucian's eyes as he pleaded, "Ailara, please, don't

Ailara's POVOnce I settled down in Morington, life fell into a quiet rhythm. Every day, I did little more than visit Hazel Thornfield, the healer, and work on restoring my wolf. When my final treatment was over, Hazel stopped me. "Ailara, your wolf is healthy now, but you're still wasting away inside. Whatever happened in the past, you still need to figure out where you want to go from here."It was something I had never even considered. Lucian and I had grown up together, and from an early age, I had known I'd one day become his Luna. All I had to do was help the Alpha lead the pack. I had never stopped to ask myself what I wanted. After I left the pack, I felt lost, like a traveler wandering through fog with no idea which way to turn. Hazel sighed when she saw me like that. Then, she said, "If you'd like, you can learn from me. Healers are needed throughout the neutral territories. Once you're trained, you could become a healer yourself."Until then, becoming a healer had

Third-Person POVAll at once, Lucian snapped. He stormed into the Luna's quarters and dragged Freya out. Moments ago, she had been dreaming of becoming the true Luna. Freya was visibly shaken, but she still kept up her helpless act. "What happened, Alpha Lucian? Is Ailara back? Is she mad at me? I can apologize to her. Please, calm down.""Shut up!" Lucian roared. He threw her to the floor, and his eyes blazed with fury. "An apology isn't enough. You deserve to die for what you've done! "You got Ethan killed, and you incited a riot that killed my pup! You're a monster! You deserve to be cursed by the Moon Goddess!"Lucian threw the evidence in Freya's face. Freya opened her mouth to defend herself, but the moment she saw what was on the papers, she froze. She knew everything she had done had come to light. If that was the case, there was no point keeping up the act anymore. Freya got to her feet before dusting herself off. She sneered and said, "I admit I started the riot.

Third-Person POVLucian stumbled back to the house and rushed into the Luna's quarters, only to be met by a scent that wasn't Ailara's. That was when he remembered he'd assigned the room to Freya. His face went deathly pale as he staggered toward the guest room. He pushed the door open and found that the room was empty. Every trace of Ailara was gone. Then, Lucian remembered something else. He rushed to the storage room, searching for the framed photograph Ailara had told him about. But the moment he saw what was inside, he froze in the doorway, unable to take another step. In the dim storage room, the huge framed photograph stood in the corner. However, Ailara's half had been cut away, leaving only Lucian in his formal attire. Memories came rushing back. Ailara and Lucian had taken the photograph during their marking ceremony. That day, they'd sworn never to betray each other. If either of them ever betrayed the other, they would cut the photograph in two and never see

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, at the Lunar Palace, Lucian felt the mate bond snap. He staggered and grabbed the back of a chair. Pain surged through him, so intense it felt as though his body were being torn apart. "Ailara…"Her name escaped his lips before he could stop himself. Sensing something was wrong, Freya hurried over to steady him. "Alpha Lucian, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" she asked, feigning concern. Lucian stared at the doorway, yet Ailara was no longer there. He had never felt this anxious before. "My mate bond with Ailara… It's been severed."A hint of delight flashed in Freya's eyes, but she quickly bit her lip. Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed Lucian's sleeve. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't accidentally gotten Ailara's dress dirty, she wouldn't have lost it. But she's being unreasonable. How could she sever her mate bond with you over something so trivial?"Lucian clenched his fists. When he spoke, his voice came out strained. The ca

Ailara's POVSeveral days later, to celebrate the pack not losing anyone during the berserk outbreak on the night of the full moon, the pack threw a grand feast. As the Alpha and Luna of the pack, Lucian and I had to attend together. However, once I had changed into my gown, I suddenly received a message from him."Why is it that I can't seem to sense you over the mate bond and can only contact you using my phone?"Anyway, after what happened with the Gamma warriors the other day, Freya is utterly terrified to face them alone. I have to accompany her, so you can just head inside yourself."There were no more messages after that. It seemed like Lucian didn't even care why he couldn't seem to feel our mate bond.I stared at my reflection in the mirror, noting the unhealthy pallor to my skin, and found this all so laughable.During that terrible night, my pup was the only one who died. Yet, no one seemed to care about that, nor did they wonder just what sort of suffering I was curr
