Chapter 4

Auteur: Cece West
Ailara's POV

Several days later, to celebrate the pack not losing anyone during the berserk outbreak on the night of the full moon, the pack threw a grand feast.

As the Alpha and Luna of the pack, Lucian and I had to attend together. However, once I had changed into my gown, I suddenly received a message from him.

"Why is it that I can't seem to sense you over the mate bond and can only contact you using my phone?

"Anyway, after what happened with the Gamma warriors the other day, Freya is utterly terrified to face them alone. I have to accompany her, so you can just head inside yourself."

There were no more messages after that. It seemed like Lucian didn't even care why he couldn't seem to feel our mate bond.

I stared at my reflection in the mirror, noting the unhealthy pallor to my skin, and found this all so laughable.

During that terrible night, my pup was the only one who died. Yet, no one seemed to care about that, nor did they wonder just what sort of suffering I was currently going through.

My Alpha—my mate—was so considerate and caring of another she-wolf, yet he completely ignored how pale I was.

Tugging at the neckline of my gown, I forced my lips to curl into a somewhat composed smile. Then, I lifted the hem of my gown and strode toward the Lunar Palace.

As the feast began, I sat alone in the spot reserved for the Luna.

Not far away, Lucian stepped into hall with Freya hanging from his arm. They slowly made their way over, looking so perfect for each other it was as though they were fated mates.

An Alpha from a neighboring pack who was on good terms with ours approached them. Shooting Freya a curious look, he asked, "Alpha Lucian, is this your Luna?"

"No, she's not my Luna. She's my deceased older brother's mate and my most respected sister-in-law."

Lucian's expression was calm and collected. It seemed like he didn't think there was anything wrong with showing up with his widowed sister-in-law instead of his mate and Luna.

The smile on Freya's face stiffened for a quick second before she put on a shy facade and greeted that Alpha.

For a moment, the Alpha eyed the two meaningfully. Then, he turned and left without another word.

Halfway through the feast, Freya walked toward me with a glass of wine and sat beside me. Suddenly, she fumbled with the glass, spilling the wine all over my gown.

Within seconds, the wine had seeped through the thin material of the gown to touch my skin. Immediately, a burning sensation flared from the point of contact.

Freya had mixed silver into the wine.

I snapped my head up to stare at her in disbelief, just in time to catch the trace of viciousness that flashed through her eyes.

Subsequently, she leaped to her feet and started to shout in a panicked tone, "Ah! I'm so sorry, Ailara! I didn't mean to do that…"

Immediately, everyone turned their gaze toward us.

Lucian was the first to dash over, his hands instantly reaching out to grab Freya and steady her. He asked anxiously, "What happened? Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine." Freya put on such an aggrieved look, as though she were about to burst into tears at any moment. "But I accidentally dirtied Ailara's gown."

Only then did Lucian notice me. Taking in the mess on my chest, he furrowed his brow in a frown. "You're already an adult, not a child. Don't you know how to sit properly? Do you know that you almost caused Freya to fall?"

His tone was filled with accusation and blame, as though I were the one who had done something wrong.

It wasn't like I could take off my clothes right then and there to show everyone the proof of Freya's despicable move. Hence, I could only stand up and try my best to endure the agony of the silver eating away at my flesh.

"I'm going to go get cleaned up."

Amidst the varied stares directed my way, I headed to the restroom.

Once I cleaned away the silver, my wolf spirit slowly healed the wound left behind. However, that bone-deep agony continued to linger in my body. At that moment, the barely-there mate bond between me and Lucian finally snapped after gradually fading out over the past few days.

A wave of relief washed over me as I understood that the only thing holding us together as mates had finally been removed.

Under the light of the moon, I stepped out of the Lunar Palace and headed for the pack border.

From this moment on, I was no longer Lucian's Luna. Whatever we had had between us had been thoroughly cut off, and we would no longer have anything to do with each other.

Ailara's POVBut fate had other plans. That day, after brewing a remedy for the Alpha of a small pack, I stepped outside and found Lucian standing there. He looked gaunt and haggard, his once-straight posture slumped as though something had weighed him down. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked nothing like the proud, confident Alpha Lucian I had once known. Lucian stood a short distance away, hesitating. He didn't dare come any closer to me. I didn't bother speaking to him, either. Without so much as a glance, I turned and walked away. Lucian hurried after me and caught up. Still, he didn't dare touch me. He hesitated for a while before finally speaking, his voice trembling. "Ailara… It's been three years. I finally found you."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. Had it really been that long?"How's Freya?" I asked. By now, she had probably gotten what she'd always wanted and become Luna.Pain flashed in Lucian's eyes as he pleaded, "Ailara, please, don't

Ailara's POVOnce I settled down in Morington, life fell into a quiet rhythm. Every day, I did little more than visit Hazel Thornfield, the healer, and work on restoring my wolf. When my final treatment was over, Hazel stopped me. "Ailara, your wolf is healthy now, but you're still wasting away inside. Whatever happened in the past, you still need to figure out where you want to go from here."It was something I had never even considered. Lucian and I had grown up together, and from an early age, I had known I'd one day become his Luna. All I had to do was help the Alpha lead the pack. I had never stopped to ask myself what I wanted. After I left the pack, I felt lost, like a traveler wandering through fog with no idea which way to turn. Hazel sighed when she saw me like that. Then, she said, "If you'd like, you can learn from me. Healers are needed throughout the neutral territories. Once you're trained, you could become a healer yourself."Until then, becoming a healer had

Third-Person POVAll at once, Lucian snapped. He stormed into the Luna's quarters and dragged Freya out. Moments ago, she had been dreaming of becoming the true Luna. Freya was visibly shaken, but she still kept up her helpless act. "What happened, Alpha Lucian? Is Ailara back? Is she mad at me? I can apologize to her. Please, calm down.""Shut up!" Lucian roared. He threw her to the floor, and his eyes blazed with fury. "An apology isn't enough. You deserve to die for what you've done! "You got Ethan killed, and you incited a riot that killed my pup! You're a monster! You deserve to be cursed by the Moon Goddess!"Lucian threw the evidence in Freya's face. Freya opened her mouth to defend herself, but the moment she saw what was on the papers, she froze. She knew everything she had done had come to light. If that was the case, there was no point keeping up the act anymore. Freya got to her feet before dusting herself off. She sneered and said, "I admit I started the riot.

Third-Person POVLucian stumbled back to the house and rushed into the Luna's quarters, only to be met by a scent that wasn't Ailara's. That was when he remembered he'd assigned the room to Freya. His face went deathly pale as he staggered toward the guest room. He pushed the door open and found that the room was empty. Every trace of Ailara was gone. Then, Lucian remembered something else. He rushed to the storage room, searching for the framed photograph Ailara had told him about. But the moment he saw what was inside, he froze in the doorway, unable to take another step. In the dim storage room, the huge framed photograph stood in the corner. However, Ailara's half had been cut away, leaving only Lucian in his formal attire. Memories came rushing back. Ailara and Lucian had taken the photograph during their marking ceremony. That day, they'd sworn never to betray each other. If either of them ever betrayed the other, they would cut the photograph in two and never see

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, at the Lunar Palace, Lucian felt the mate bond snap. He staggered and grabbed the back of a chair. Pain surged through him, so intense it felt as though his body were being torn apart. "Ailara…"Her name escaped his lips before he could stop himself. Sensing something was wrong, Freya hurried over to steady him. "Alpha Lucian, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" she asked, feigning concern. Lucian stared at the doorway, yet Ailara was no longer there. He had never felt this anxious before. "My mate bond with Ailara… It's been severed."A hint of delight flashed in Freya's eyes, but she quickly bit her lip. Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed Lucian's sleeve. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't accidentally gotten Ailara's dress dirty, she wouldn't have lost it. But she's being unreasonable. How could she sever her mate bond with you over something so trivial?"Lucian clenched his fists. When he spoke, his voice came out strained. The ca
