Chapter 4

Autor: Nora Blythe
Only after Kate came back to her senses did the scissors slip from her grasp and fall to the floor.

Kate staggered backward, and Martin immediately rushed over to steady her.

She wiped the tears from her face. "Neil, can you please stop loving me? Just let me go. I'll make sure you see for yourself how happy Martin and I can be together."

With Martin supporting her, she walked away.

Kate's words hurt far more than the scissors ever could. They burrowed into me an inch at a time.

Kate's idea of "happiness" was spending tens of millions of dollars to put Martin in the spotlight. She bribed journalists and media outlets, making sure every gossip rag and social media feed was flooded with news of their perfect romance.

It was like she was showing off a prized possession she'd kept hidden for years. She even threw a massive party at the house and introduced Martin to all her business partners.

Those were all things I could never have even dreamed of having. But even as everything unfolded before me, I continued to count down the days calmly.

The deadline Margaret had given me was today. After today, I'd probably never see Kate again for the rest of my life.

"Neil, you really have no shame. You know perfectly well this party is for Martin, yet you're still shamelessly hanging around here."

Kate's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. She walked over with a look of disdain, and trailing behind her were Martin and a few of her closest friends.

Laughter and ridicule instantly filled the room.

"Kate, if a leech won't let go, you just need to tear it off and throw it out."

"What even is he right now? The side piece?"

"The Cross family used to be one of the most prominent families in our circle. Too bad luck wasn't on their side, and they all died except for Neil. It's hardly surprising that he's trying to latch onto Kate."

Those comments clearly struck a nerve with Kate. She looked at me with pure disgust, as if my very existence was an embarrassment to her.

Kate ordered the staff to toss all my belongings out of the house.

Then, in front of everyone, she loudly declared, "Three years ago, Neil threw away all his pride and dignity to beg for my hand. He came between me and my first love, and now he's trying to make me abort my child.

"From this day forward, I have absolutely nothing to do with him. The Barker family and the Cross family are officially cutting all ties!"

Her loud, firm voice made my mind go blank for a second. I leaned weakly against the wall, my hands trembling behind my back. With her shining so brightly now, it was true that I was no longer good enough to be with her.

Seeing that I offered no response, Kate took Martin's hand and spoke in a much gentler tone. "I've decided to have a wedding with Martin, and we're going to have the ceremony in 22 different countries—"

"I won't allow it!"

Before Kate could even finish, Margaret's voice rang out. Her face was black as thunder.

The second she appeared, the entire room fell dead silent. Everyone knew Margaret was a tyrant and that she still held all the real power in the Barker family.

"Mom, no matter what you say, I'm done listening. I am not going to continue living with Neil. Everything I had has been ruined by him over the past three years!"

Kate rarely went head-to-head with Margaret, but right now she planted herself in front of Martin, refusing to budge.

Margaret let out a heavy sigh. "Relax. That agreement involving you and Neil has already been terminated. Since Neil has lost our wager, he won't be showing his face around you anymore.

"But with him gone, you're going to have to marry the youngest son of the Pruitt family. Kate, had it not been for Neil these past three years, your life would have already been ruined."

Hearing the resolve in my voice, Margaret could only grit her teeth and agree to take Kate back. When I returned to the hospital room, Kate's eyes lit up the moment she saw me. "I thought you had left."I said nothing and simply looked at her calmly. She choked back a sob. "I was raised entirely by my mom. Her ridiculous standards and impossible expectations suffocated me."I only started dating because I wanted to escape her control. I hated you because you stood with her and forced me into a marriage I never wanted."I already knew all of this. When we were kids, Margaret was incredibly strict with her. If Kate didn't nail a dance routine, she'd be made to stand in a corner with no dinner. If her grades slipped, she'd get a brutal beating. And every single time she felt wronged, she'd come running to me, sobbing in my arms. I used to be her safe haven.I rolled up my sleeve, revealing a mess of scars. The first time was the day she brought Martin home. Just because I made a si

"No. My mom didn't say anything… I found you myself. I've been looking for you for a long time."She choked back her sobs, unable to say anything else. Before I could even speak, Kate suddenly whipped out a knife and started slashing wildly at her own stomach. Blood pooled on the floor in an instant, leaving me completely frozen in shock."Neil, I was wrong. I tormented you before because I hated you for taking away my freedom, but now I can't live without you. Will you please come back with me?"Kate's deranged behavior sent my heart racing. I immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. The entire way there, she kept screaming my name.Because of the way Margaret had raised her, Kate had developed a rather obsessive personality. But I never in a million years thought she'd actually stab herself. In the end, the baby couldn't be saved. The doctors said Kate had injured herself too severely, so it would be incredibly difficult for her to ever get pregnant agai

After living abroad for more than half a year, I thought my life would continue to be peaceful like this. But then, out of nowhere, Margaret called me from abroad. She sounded somewhat anxious as she said, "Neil, Kate wants to see you…"I froze for a second, then flatly turned her down. "Mrs. Barker, didn't we agree that you would keep her away from me?""I know that's what I said, but I never thought she'd threaten me with suicide. I offered Martin a large sum of money, and he abandoned Kate without a second thought. "When Kate couldn't find him and came to confront me, I told her everything about our wager. Now she's become obsessed with seeing you. I don't know what else to do…"Margaret sounded helpless as she kept trying to persuade me. "Neil, over these past three years, I've come to see you as my real son-in-law. As soon as the Pruitt family learned about Kate's divorce, they came knocking on our door."They don't care whether Kate has been married or pregnant. They simpl

Kate appeared flustered, her anxious gaze shifting between Margaret and me."Kate, if he wants to leave, let him," Martin said. "Haven't you always hated him anyway? There's no need to worry. I will never abandon you! And I won't let you marry into the Pruitt family."Seeing how distressed Kate was, he quickly raised his hand to swear. And yet, Kate didn't even spare him a glance. Her eyes were still glued to me, like she was trying to drill a hole through my head with her piercing gaze."We've known each other for over 20 years. Even if we're cutting ties, you don't have to leave. I'll buy you a house as compensation…"Her words almost made me laugh. With a smile, I said, "Don't bother."My coldness made her swallow the rest of her words. She pressed her lips together, still unwilling to give up."If you walk out that door, you'll never see me again! You know my mom never goes back on her word. You'll never be able to return!"You'd better not regret this. It's no skin off my

"What wager? What agreement? Mom, what are you talking about?" Kate asked. She snapped her head up and unconsciously let go of Martin's hand.As if she couldn't understand Margaret's words, she turned her gaze to me. "Neil, what kind of wager did you make with my mom?"I looked away, refusing to answer. Margaret stepped between us, blocking Kate's view of me. She looked at Kate with a pained expression."Your marriage was arranged long ago," she said. "You were supposed to marry the youngest son of the Pruitt family. If Neil hadn't stepped in back then, you would've already been his wife."But it's not too late. I've already reached an agreement with the Pruitt family. I won't continue indulging your behavior any longer!"Kate's lips trembled slightly. She looked completely stunned by the news. "Mom, you're actually making me marry that cripple from the Pruitt family? I'm your daughter, not some piece of property you can just sell off!"She whipped her head back toward me, her vo
