MasukMy entire body tensed up and my heart began to beat faster than normal. “I have to leave,” I muttered, swallowing hard as I pushed the door open.
“Lyra, why are you leaving?” Without paying attention to Kade, I got outside and began to walk away. He had woken up memories that shouldn’t be woken up. Alpha Kade was my past and I should not be anywhere near him. “What are you doing? I thought you agreed to let me pick you up.” Kade was out of the car too and I could hear his footsteps behind me. I hastened mine but before I could get too far, his hands caught my wrist. “I changed my mind,” I snapped, flashing him a hard glare as I turned to look at him. “Since my family can’t pick me up themselves. I’ll just go to them myself.” I tried pulling away, but he still held on to me. “Why are you making us do this again? Your father is the Beta of this pack and your brother will take over soon. You just got back from the human world with a degree from an Ivy League College. There’s rumors of you being betrothed to me. You’re kind of a big deal here and there are so many opportunists in the streets. You can’t just go out into the streets.” I scoffed when he mentioned that there were rumors of me being betrothed to him. “You’re an Alpha yourself. You should protect yourself first.” I slapped his hand away and continued walking. He was doing it again. Acting like he cared, but I had grown past that level. I refuse to fall for that again. But again, maybe he did care. Or, maybe he was here because I was the daughter of his Beta and the sister of his future Beta. Seeing it this way made me a little bit annoyed. But again, why should it be annoying. Why should he, seeing me as only his Beta’s daughter bother me? “Why are you angry at me?” My breath hitched. Everything went still, including my muscles, so I stood, frozen and locked to the ground. He was right. Where was the anger coming from? He said what he said eight years ago and I now had a fiancé. There was nothing to be angry about. I took a deep breath and kept on walking. My jaw tightened and my hands curled into a fist beside me. The anger I felt was a reminder that even after eight years, moving on was not very easy. I flagged down the cab driving toward me and hurriedly got in before Alpha Kade could do anything to stop me. “Keep driving,” I ordered immediately I got in and the engine of the cab roared into life. We were moving. “Where to?” The cab driver asked, still driving. I quickly remembered Kade’s words. He was not wrong about how dangerous this was. “Do you know where the Beta’s mansion is? I am supposed to resume work there as a maid tomorrow.” “So, you don’t know your way there?” The cab driver asked. Sensing the excitement in his voice, I raised an eyebrow. “Are you from another pack?” “Not really. I have just been away for a very long time.” I looked away, hoping he would not ask anymore questions and luckily for me, he did not. Instead, he looked back at me a little too much for my convenience. His stolen glances were however the least of my problems. I heaved a sigh of frustration and looked through the window, walking my mind through everything that had taken place the last few hours. Then, I reached into my bag, drew out my phone and called Conan. He picked up after the third ring. “Lyra? Lyra, I’m kind of in an important meeting right now. I will call you later.” I threw my phone beside me, my jaw clenching so tightly it ached. What meeting was more important than Conan making sure his fiancée got home safely. He could do nothing much from where he was, but at least he should know that hearing his voice would put me in a better mood. The cab driver stole another glance at me and this time around, I was not ready to ignore it. “Is something wrong with my face?” I blurted and I saw his lip curl up through the rearview mirror. Immediately I asked the question, it dawned on me that he might have recognized me as the Beta’s daughter. “No. You’re just so beautiful that I can’t take my eyes off you. I would like it if we could…” he paused, turned to look at me and his eyes lingered from my lips down. “you know get to know each other on a higher level.” I rolled my eyes in annoyance. So this was what that was. “I will act like you said nothing. Just get me to my destination.” He said nothing in reply and continued driving, but there was an issue. I no longer knew where he was heading to. In the past eight years, the pack had changed greatly, but I still knew my way back home and he was definitely not going through the path I knew. “Where are you taking me to? Are you sure you know the way?” “You sound like you know your way and your aura? That aura does not belong to a maid. I should take you home but your beauty is too tempting, so I will kidnap you, have you for myself and when I figure out what powerful family you come from, I’ll get as much money I can out of your family. You can try to make a call though. Sadly, it won’t go through.” I could not help but laugh. The audacity. I had flagged down a random cab despite how dangerous it was because I knew that I was no helpless damsel. “And how will you do that?” The mockery in my voice was palpable. The cab came to a halt. This time, he did not just turn his face but his body too. An annoying grin was on his face and I sat calmly, waiting for him to get too close. Like expected, he got too close and at that moment, Selka, my wolf, woke up. My nails grew longer and I brought them to his right eye and took it out. Then, I kicked the car door open and got out. He screamed out in terror and slowly began to transform to his wolf. As he did, he got out of the car. I watched him calmly, rolling his eyeball between my fingers and awaiting his display before I displayed mine. His biggest mistake was underrating me. To begin with, his shift was too slow compared to mine. He had almost fully shifted, and at the snap of a finger I shifted fully to Selka, a wolf two times bigger than what his was going to be. Sensing the danger he had gotten into, he began to take steps backwards but before he could run away, his head fell to the ground. I paused and looked around. I blinked, trying to make sense of what just happened and then came a quick. sharp metallic clink as a sword from nowhere touched the ground. That was not my doing. So, that meant one thing. Someone else was here with us.The night did not stay quiet for long and I woke up before dawn.Everything was still. The room was dim and Kade’s arm was still around me, heavy and warm across my waist. Then I heard a howl. It was distant but was loud enough to drive me to consciousness. My eyes opened fully.“Kade,” I whispered. He was already awake and his body was still beside me. “You heard that?” I asked quietly.“Yes.”Another howl followed.Kade sat up immediately. His hand brushed over my arm carefully, avoiding the bandage. “Stay here.”“No,” I said, sitting up too. “I’m coming with you.”“Lyra.”“I’m not staying back,” I cut in. His jaw tightened slightly. Then he nodded. “Fine, but you stay close to me.”We both got dressed quickly.By the time we stepped outside, the pack was already stirring.Warriors were moving fast. Guards were taking positions. The air felt tense. My father was already there, speaking to a group of warriors.“What’s happening?” I asked as we approached. He turned immediately. “Tra
My father sat down on the couch. “There is also a possibility that he might have heard of the relic. Conan might think he can take you and get closer to Night Claw strength.”I shook my head. “I do not want him. I only want Kade.”The rest of the day moved slowly. I helped my mother in the kitchen even though she told me to rest. My arm hurt less when I kept busy. Every hour I checked the window for the truck.Another gift came in the evening. A pretty necklace this time. Gold chain with a small wolf pendant. The note said “For the future we should have had.”I did not open the box. One of the guards brought it straight to me but I told him to put it aside for Kade. When the sun started to set the truck finally returned. Kade and Tim stepped out. Kade’s face still looked hard.I ran to him the second he walked through the door. He caught me and held me tight against his chest.“Did you find him?” I asked.Kade nodded. “We tracked the messenger. Conan is staying at the old inn on the n
The morning light came soft through the curtains. I woke up still wrapped in Kade’s arms. His body stayed warm and heavy against mine. The cut on my arm throbbed a little but the pain felt far away. Kade’s breathing was slow and even. I did not move. I just stayed there and let myself feel safe. After a few minutes he stirred. His eyes opened and found mine right away. He pulled me closer and pressed a kiss to my forehead.“Morning,” he said. His voice was rough from sleep.“Morning,” I whispered back.He did not let me get up fast. He kept one arm around me while he checked the bandage on my arm. His fingers were gentle. “Looks okay. Mira did good work.”I smiled small. “I feel better already.”We got dressed slow. Kade helped me into a soft shirt and made sure the sleeve did not rub the stitches. He stayed close the whole time. His hand touched my back or my waist every few seconds like he needed to know I was really there.Downstairs my mother had breakfast ready. My father sat at
The truck rolled to a stop in front of the pack house. The lights were bright in every window. My body ached all over but the sight of home made something tight in my chest loosen just a little. Before Tim even cut the engine the front door flew open. My mother ran out. Elara’s face was wet with tears. Her hair was messy like she had been pulling at it for hours. She looked small and broken but strong at the same time.“Lyra!” she cried. “Oh my girl!”She reached the truck just as my father stepped down. He moved slowly but he opened his arms. My mother crashed into him. She held him tight and sobbed into his chest.“You are alive,” she whispered over and over. “Both of you are alive.”I climbed out next. My legs felt weak but Kade was right there. His hand stayed on my lower back. He did not let go.“Mom,” I said. She turned to me fast. Her eyes went wide when she saw the cut on my arm and the bruise on my cheek. Then she pulled me into the hug. My father wrapped his arms around both
My father turned to me as much as the ropes allowed. “If they get the relic working right it could mean war for all the packs. Bigger than Night Claw.”“Then we stop them,” I said. One of the guards told us to be quiet. We sat in silence after that. The bulb swung above us. I kept working my wrists slow. The rope loosened just a little. Not enough yet but maybe soon it will.My mind went to Kade again. I could almost feel him. The bond pulling tight. He was close. I knew it.Time kept moving.Thirty minutes left. Then twenty. The guards changed. New ones came in. They looked meaner.Fifteen minutes.I heard footsteps in the hall. Many of them. The leader burst in. He looked excited and angry at the same time.“Your mate is here,” he said. “At the quarry. Alone like we said. But he brought nothing. No papers. Just himself.”My heart jumped. “What did he say?”“He wants to talk. Face to face. Says he will trade himself for you and your father.”The leader laughed. “Stupid alpha. We wi
Back in my room they tied me to the chair again. Tighter this time. The leader stood in front of me.“You bought yourself some time with that offer. This relic was dormant in this pack because Alec did not know how to use it. It’s good to know that things will change,” he said. “But if you are lying I will make sure your father watches while I cut you slow.”I lifted my chin. “I am not lying. But I need to see the relic closer. And I need water. My head still hurts from the dart.”He thought about it. Then he nodded at one of the men. “Get her water. And bring the relic back in ten minutes.”The man left. The leader stayed. He pulled up a chair and sat across from me.“Tell me something,” he said. “Why does Kade love you so much? You don’t look very impressive. You are a beauty, yes but there are far more beautiful she wolves.”I said nothing in reply. The door opened again. The man came back with a bottle of water. He held it to my lips. I drank slow. The cool liquid helped clear my
“I’m surprised at how angry you are. You should not even be disappointed. Why on earth should she accept? Have you met you?”Conan froze. “Lyra, what do you mean? What are you saying?”“That you’re not worth anybody’s choice. The she wolf rejected you and you very much deserve that rejection.” I st
“I think you should just hear what he has to say. He has to have a reason for coming back. Just see him.”I scoffed. I was in disbelief. “Mom, are you seriously asking your daughter to give audience to the same wolf that ignored her? Mom, are you kidding me?”She shrugged. “I am just saying. I’m ar
I didn’t listen to the voicemails. That was my small victory for the night.I shoved the phone deep into my suitcase, zipped it shut like that would somehow seal Kade out of my life, and went to bed telling myself that tomorrow would be better. Tomorrow always sounded convincing in my head.It wasn
Dan turned out to be the kind of distraction that didn’t try too hard. That alone made him dangerous. He walked beside us as we exited the airport, hands tucked into his pockets like he wasn’t trying to impress anyone, like he hadn’t just called me beautiful five minutes ago. My mom, of course,
