Chapter 2

Author: Echo
Joren took a quick step forward and killed the TV.

He turned around with a sheepish smile.

"It's all just rumors. Don't even look at it."

He walked over and gently wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Don't be mad. I'll make you your favorite carbonara, okay? Just like when we first got together."

His breath was warm, carrying the familiar scent of his cologne.

Carbonara.

It was my favorite. When Joren found out, he specifically tracked down a Michelin-star chef to learn the recipe.

The first time I had it, I was so happy I almost cried.

Seeing my red eyes, Joren didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Dummy, it's just a plate of pasta."

"I'll learn to make more for you in the future."

But even now, it was still the only dish he knew.

I silently shoved a bite of pasta into my mouth.

I don't know why, but it somehow tasted worse than before.

That night, we lay in bed as usual.

Joren rolled over, instinctively trying to pull me against his chest from behind.

But I subconsciously pulled away.

He frowned and was about to say something when his phone lit up on the nightstand.

In the dark, the faint glow was especially glaring.

I caught a glimpse of the notification. It was from Chloe: I miss you so much, baby.

There was also a picture of her in a sheer lace slip, striking a seductive pose.

Joren picked up the phone, a small, unconscious smile tugging at his lips, and his fingers tapped rapidly on the screen.

I saw his reply: You really are an insatiable wildcat.

I turned my head away, not wanting to see anymore, and simply shifted further away from him.

That night, an invisible abyss lay between us.

The next morning, I was woken by my phone ringing frantically.

It was my lawyer.

"Miss, there's a situation at the villa," his voice was anxious. "When I got here, I found someone has been living here for a while. She's got armed guards with her, and she's refusing to leave."

My stomach dropped to the floor.

That was a top-tier safe house I personally funded. The security system was flawless. How could some random person just break in?

"I'm on my way."

I grabbed my keys and sped straight to Beverly Hills.

As soon as I walked into the grand foyer, my lawyer rushed up to me, looking entirely helpless.

"Miss, she brought armed guards and took over the property. The security system was disabled with an internal passcode."

I frowned and marched deeper inside.

When I crossed into the main living room, I froze in my tracks.

Chloe, wearing a sheer silk slip dress, was lounging comfortably on the priceless Italian leather sofa. A few guards stood around her, serving her expensive drinks like she was the lady of the manor.

I recognized them instantly. They were Joren’s men.

It hit me like a freight train.

Joren played the proud, independent man to my face, refusing to live in the house I bought. But behind my back, he fully enjoyed the luxury and turned my property into a secret love nest for his mistress.

My manicured nails dug painfully into my palms. The anger rushed straight to my head.

Before I could demand answers, Chloe spotted me.

She placed her wine glass on the table and looked me up and down with absolute disgust.

"Where did this cheap hooker come from?" she sneered. "That’s a handmade Persian rug. If you ruin it, you couldn’t pay for it even if you sold yourself on the corner."

I marched right up to her and slapped away her pointing finger.

"I’ve already sold this house," I stated coldly. "Take your men and get the hell out. Now."

Chloe looked like she just heard the funniest joke in the world.

She stood up, mocked my plain outfit with her eyes, and laughed loudly for her guards to hear.

"Do you hear this? This broke bitch came all the way here to play boss!"

Her clueless guards instantly crowded around, echoing her vile insults.

"Who is this crazy bitch? The Boss gave this estate to Miss Chloe years ago!"

"Exactly. We all know Miss Chloe is the Don's ride-or-die. This place is hers."

"She probably saw the news about the Boss and Miss Chloe today and lost her damn mind trying to get a payout."

Listening to their trash talk, I forced down my boiling rage. I pulled a thick folder out of my bag, the deed and transfer papers my lawyer had just prepped.

"Look closely. I am the legal owner of this property," I said with lethal calm. "You have exactly five minutes to clear out, or I’m calling the cops."

Chloe took a step forward. Without even glancing at the pages, she snatched the folder from my hands and tossed it straight into the roaring fireplace.

I decided to open the door. Who knew what this psycho was going to try to do."Aria!" Joren looked up, his eyes shining with manic excitement. "I understood what you said last time! I wasn't good enough for you then, but things are entirely different now!"He held up a bloody contract and the ring."Look! I took the West Side docks! I proved myself! I'm worthy of you now. Marry me!" I looked at the army of armed thugs down on the street, then back at this delusional man, and just felt pity.I sighed. "Joren, stop lying to yourself. We ended a year ago. A word of advice, stop being so arrogant. Climbing up on a mountain of bodies is going to get you killed." His manic smile vanished instantly. His face twisted with rage."Why? I did all of this, what more do you want from me?!" he roared."Do you know why you cheated with Chloe?" I asked, not expecting a real answer. "Because I saw you at your lowest. Once you thought you were a big shot, looking at me just reminded you of how broke a

Joren’s eyes were bloodshot with pure, unhinged obsession."Aria! Are you gonna force me to die before you even look at me?!" he screamed like a madman in the rain, his voice dripping with chilling desperation. "If that's what it takes, I'll blow my brains out right now!" I sat comfortably in the back of the car, staring at the man I once loved. He looked like a monster completely consumed by greed and a deeply twisted ego.I watched him calmly. He was just pathetic."Joren, do you know why I hid my identity and chose to be with a broke punk like you?""Because back then, even though you had nothing, you were loyal. You had the guts to actually protect the people you loved."I didn't hold back as I shredded whatever dignity he had left. "But look at you now! You're a leech. You throw women under the bus when things get hard, and you beg like a stray dog in the mud!" The pouring rain crashed down around us. Joren froze, letting out a choked sob like a dying animal. His hand trembled v

He groaned loudly in pain, dropping to one knee in front of me, trying to use extreme guilt and our past to manipulate me one last time."Aria, it hurts..." he gasped, pale and heavily sweating. He looked up at me with pathetic, dog-like eyes. "It really hurts... I remember back then, you used to carefully bandage my wounds... I'd bleed out right here if it meant you'd forgive me." I stared blankly at the blood ruining the Persian rug.I felt absolutely nothing. My only thought was: He’s filthy. He’s ruining my floor."Joren, you think way too highly of yourself." I looked down at him. "Even if you plunged that knife directly into your heart and died right here, I wouldn't bat an eye. Take your woman and get out." Joren stared in utter shock, unable to believe the girl who used to cry over his minor scrapes was acting so ruthless."Aria! I swear it's only you!" He panicked completely when the guilt trip didn't work. "It was Chloe! She aggressively seduced me! I messed up, but I never

Under the immediate threat of death and his fragile empire crumbling, Joren threw away whatever pride he had left.He shoved Chloe away and dropped to his knees like a stray dog, frantically grabbing the hem of my dress."Aria, let me explain!" he begged, pure panic in his eyes. "Me and Chloe aren't what you think! She’s just a toy! That island party, she made it all up to show off! I never agreed to it!"He swore to the heavens. "My heart never changed! You're the only one I truly love!" Looking at his face, my stomach churned. The disgust hit its absolute peak.I violently yanked my dress away like he was a walking disease. I pulled a silk handkerchief from my bag, meticulously wiped the fingers he touched, and dropped the cloth on the floor."A toy?" I looked down at him, my eyes totally dead. "If she's just a toy, why was she lounging in my house like she owned it? Why was she bragging to everyone that this multi-million-dollar estate was your promise ring to her?" Joren froze, h

I recognized him immediately. It was Matteo, my father’s fiercely loyal Underboss. The second Matteo spoke.Smack.A slap ten times harder than the one I took cracked across Chloe’s face. The brutal force literally lifted her off her feet, and she slammed hard onto the unforgiving marble floor. Blood and broken teeth spilled from her mouth. The sudden, extreme violence shocked everyone in the room.Joren turned ghostly pale. He rushed forward and scooped Chloe up."Chloe! Are you okay?" he roared in anger. Compared to how he stood completely still when I got hit, his panic now was the ultimate, bitter irony. I saw it all clearly, and my smile was ice-cold."Motherfucker! You hit our future Don's wife! Kill him!"Joren's thugs pulled their guns, aiming straight at Matteo and me. Looking at this sad gang of nobodies acting so arrogant, I just felt it was ridiculous. Joren knelt there, comforting the woman in his arms like she was made of fragile glass."It's okay, baby," he coaxed softly. "You're too reckless. Don't let an outsider work you up like this." I clutched my badly bleeding hand, watching them with completely dead eyes. They were flirting like I wasn't even standing there. It was blindingly sickening. My stomach churned, and I nearly threw up right on the rug.If this were the old naive me, I would have screamed at him, begging to know why he was doing this. But now, I didn't want to ask a damn thing. I was just exhausted. I just wanted to get the hell out of this disgusting place. "Joren, she kept saying this villa is hers!" Chloe whined, pointing at me again. Joren finally looked up.His eyes landed on me, and he finally noticed the thick blood dripping steadily from my hand. His gaze fell on me, finally noticing the blood dripping from my hand. The moment our eyes met, a fleeting panic flashe
