Chapter 1

Author: Echo
The second I got back to our Brooklyn apartment, I stripped off the wedding dress.

The lace slipped through my fingers.

I grabbed the fabric and shoved it straight into the fireplace.

The flames instantly swallowed the expensive silk. The firelight danced across my face.

Ten years.

I bled with Joren as he fought his way from a street thug to a newly crowned Don. All my love and youth just turned to ash, right along with this dress.

I grabbed my phone and dialed my family’s lawyer.

"It's Aria," I said, my voice ice-cold. "Transfer the Beverly Hills safe house. Have it done today."

The lawyer agreed without missing a beat.

Back when Joren first started making a play for the Don’s seat, he had a massive target on his back. To keep him safe, I dropped a fortune to build that fortress.

And what did he say?

"Aria, I'm a man. I can't live in a house bought by a woman. People will call me a leech!"

Back then, I just thought he had a fragile ego.

So, I never told him I was the Newman family heiress. He just thought I was a rich girl coasting on a trust fund.

To protect his pride, I huddled with him in this crappy Brooklyn apartment where the heater barely worked. We survived on cheap frozen pizza and wore discounted clothes.

I gave up every single privilege I had as a mafia princess.

Looking back, I was an absolute idiot.

"Also, pay out double severance to all the guards at the estate," I continued. "Cut all ties between that house and me."

"Understood, Miss."

I hung up, and a massive bank deduction text popped onto my screen. Staring at that long string of zeros, I didn't feel bad at all. I actually felt a dark sense of satisfaction.

Trading my untouchable life as a mafia princess to be his anxious, hidden lover... I had been out of my mind for ten whole years.

I pivoted to the closet and yanked out a heavy black trash bag.

Joren’s leather jackets, watches, razors, I swept it all into the bag. I tied it up tight and dragged it to the door.

Bang.

The door was kicked open from the outside.

Joren stood there, reeking of cheap perfume and top-shelf liquor. He glanced down at the trash bag, his brow furrowing instantly.

"Aria, what the hell is wrong with you now?" He stepped inside, clearly annoyed. "It was bad enough you tried to force my hand by wearing that dress to the party. Now you’re throwing a tantrum and kicking me out?"

Forcing his hand?

I let out a harsh, cold laugh.

"Joren, you were the one who promised to marry me when you took the Don's seat." I stared dead into his eyes. "What, now that you have a young, pretty secretary warming your bed, I’m just in the way?"

"What kind of bullshit is that?" He impatiently tugged at his tie.

"Bullshit?" I pointed at the door. "At the banquet, you had your arm wrapped around Chloe. The whole room was asking if she was your woman. Did you even try to deny it?"

He avoided my eyes, stayed silent for a moment, then sighed and looked down. "Aria, I'm sorry."

He stepped forward, reaching for my hand, but I pulled away.

"In that situation, I couldn't deny it," his voice was hoarse, eyes tired and helpless. "You know how it is. I just took the seat. My foundation is weak, and the West Side crew is breathing down my neck. I need a smokescreen. I need everyone to think Chloe is my weakness, so I can keep you safe."

He looked at me, his tone earnest. "She's just a prop for the show. You're the only one in my heart."

Saying that, he pulled a velvet box from his suit pocket and slowly opened it in front of me.

Inside lay the diamond wedding ring I had stared at in the window for a long time.

"It's the one you liked. I've had it ready for a while," his eyes softened. "Once I deal with the West Side, we'll get married, okay? Then, I'll tell the whole world that you are my only wife."

I looked at the sparkling ring, then at his affectionate eyes, feeling a sharp prick in my chest.

I didn't believe him, but I didn't call him out on it either.

Ten years. I knew him too well. He always knew how to break down my defenses with the sweetest words and just the right amount of vulnerability.

But this time, my heart was already cold.

I just wanted to leave quietly.

"I know," I replied softly, lowering my eyes, not looking at the ring.

Joren seemed to think I had forgiven him, just like before.

"You still have that private island in Miami, right? I'm taking a few of my most trusted men there for a vacation next month."

"Everyone's been working hard, so it's a reward for them. We'll stay at your beach house that's been empty for ten years. Let them see what it's like."

I clenched my fists.

That private island in Miami was the place I had saved for our honeymoon.

Now, he was using it to reward his men.

And I didn't even need to guess who was included in his "trusted men."

Just then, the news came on the TV.

In the footage, Joren was shielding Chloe, who wore a low-cut evening gown, as they both slipped into the back of a Maybach after the banquet.

The headline read: The New Godfather and His Mystery Woman Share a Night Together.

Staring at the screen, my chest felt like it was stuffed with ice.

Joren followed my gaze to the screen, a flash of awkwardness crossing his face.

I decided to open the door. Who knew what this psycho was going to try to do."Aria!" Joren looked up, his eyes shining with manic excitement. "I understood what you said last time! I wasn't good enough for you then, but things are entirely different now!"He held up a bloody contract and the ring."Look! I took the West Side docks! I proved myself! I'm worthy of you now. Marry me!" I looked at the army of armed thugs down on the street, then back at this delusional man, and just felt pity.I sighed. "Joren, stop lying to yourself. We ended a year ago. A word of advice, stop being so arrogant. Climbing up on a mountain of bodies is going to get you killed." His manic smile vanished instantly. His face twisted with rage."Why? I did all of this, what more do you want from me?!" he roared."Do you know why you cheated with Chloe?" I asked, not expecting a real answer. "Because I saw you at your lowest. Once you thought you were a big shot, looking at me just reminded you of how broke a

Joren’s eyes were bloodshot with pure, unhinged obsession."Aria! Are you gonna force me to die before you even look at me?!" he screamed like a madman in the rain, his voice dripping with chilling desperation. "If that's what it takes, I'll blow my brains out right now!" I sat comfortably in the back of the car, staring at the man I once loved. He looked like a monster completely consumed by greed and a deeply twisted ego.I watched him calmly. He was just pathetic."Joren, do you know why I hid my identity and chose to be with a broke punk like you?""Because back then, even though you had nothing, you were loyal. You had the guts to actually protect the people you loved."I didn't hold back as I shredded whatever dignity he had left. "But look at you now! You're a leech. You throw women under the bus when things get hard, and you beg like a stray dog in the mud!" The pouring rain crashed down around us. Joren froze, letting out a choked sob like a dying animal. His hand trembled v

He groaned loudly in pain, dropping to one knee in front of me, trying to use extreme guilt and our past to manipulate me one last time."Aria, it hurts..." he gasped, pale and heavily sweating. He looked up at me with pathetic, dog-like eyes. "It really hurts... I remember back then, you used to carefully bandage my wounds... I'd bleed out right here if it meant you'd forgive me." I stared blankly at the blood ruining the Persian rug.I felt absolutely nothing. My only thought was: He’s filthy. He’s ruining my floor."Joren, you think way too highly of yourself." I looked down at him. "Even if you plunged that knife directly into your heart and died right here, I wouldn't bat an eye. Take your woman and get out." Joren stared in utter shock, unable to believe the girl who used to cry over his minor scrapes was acting so ruthless."Aria! I swear it's only you!" He panicked completely when the guilt trip didn't work. "It was Chloe! She aggressively seduced me! I messed up, but I never

Under the immediate threat of death and his fragile empire crumbling, Joren threw away whatever pride he had left.He shoved Chloe away and dropped to his knees like a stray dog, frantically grabbing the hem of my dress."Aria, let me explain!" he begged, pure panic in his eyes. "Me and Chloe aren't what you think! She’s just a toy! That island party, she made it all up to show off! I never agreed to it!"He swore to the heavens. "My heart never changed! You're the only one I truly love!" Looking at his face, my stomach churned. The disgust hit its absolute peak.I violently yanked my dress away like he was a walking disease. I pulled a silk handkerchief from my bag, meticulously wiped the fingers he touched, and dropped the cloth on the floor."A toy?" I looked down at him, my eyes totally dead. "If she's just a toy, why was she lounging in my house like she owned it? Why was she bragging to everyone that this multi-million-dollar estate was your promise ring to her?" Joren froze, h

I recognized him immediately. It was Matteo, my father’s fiercely loyal Underboss. The second Matteo spoke.Smack.A slap ten times harder than the one I took cracked across Chloe’s face. The brutal force literally lifted her off her feet, and she slammed hard onto the unforgiving marble floor. Blood and broken teeth spilled from her mouth. The sudden, extreme violence shocked everyone in the room.Joren turned ghostly pale. He rushed forward and scooped Chloe up."Chloe! Are you okay?" he roared in anger. Compared to how he stood completely still when I got hit, his panic now was the ultimate, bitter irony. I saw it all clearly, and my smile was ice-cold."Motherfucker! You hit our future Don's wife! Kill him!"Joren's thugs pulled their guns, aiming straight at Matteo and me. Looking at this sad gang of nobodies acting so arrogant, I just felt it was ridiculous. Frogs at the bottom of the well who had absolutely no idea they were looking at the sky.Matteo didn't even blink. He ju

Joren knelt there, comforting the woman in his arms like she was made of fragile glass."It's okay, baby," he coaxed softly. "You're too reckless. Don't let an outsider work you up like this." I clutched my badly bleeding hand, watching them with completely dead eyes. They were flirting like I wasn't even standing there. It was blindingly sickening. My stomach churned, and I nearly threw up right on the rug.If this were the old naive me, I would have screamed at him, begging to know why he was doing this. But now, I didn't want to ask a damn thing. I was just exhausted. I just wanted to get the hell out of this disgusting place. "Joren, she kept saying this villa is hers!" Chloe whined, pointing at me again. "She even brought guys to kick me out!" Joren finally looked up.His eyes landed on me, and he finally noticed the thick blood dripping steadily from my hand. His gaze fell on me, finally noticing the blood dripping from my hand. The moment our eyes met, a fleeting panic flashe
