Cassie bit her lip, trying to hold back tears. She knew she shouldn't feel this way. Heck! He didn't feel sorry for any of the Vanderbilts. She just feels burdened by her actions.

“I can’t even look at my daughter now. Emily climbed on my lap this morning, and I... I flinched away from her.”

“And why is that?” Nikolai asked softly.

“Because these hands...” She lifted them, trembling. “These hands killed someone.”

Nikolai’s expression changed in an instant, not anger, but something colder.

“Cassandra,” he said, his voice dropping into a tone he rarely used. “Do you think the army trained you to bake cookies?”

Cassie froze. No one had ever used her full name in decades. She had even made her parents change her birth certificate from Cassandra McCarthy to Cassie McCarthy. And Nikolai just called her that... which means he wasn't joking around. He meant business.

“You were molded into a weapon,” Nikolai said. “A tool forged to protect the people you love. If your hands killed an enemy…”

Cassie didn’t sleep that night. Not really.By dawn, she was sitting on the edge of the bed, her elbows on her knees, and her fingers threaded into her hair. The sun hadn’t even risen fully, yet the world outside seemed too bright, too loud, and too alive for the death on her conscience, which she was trying to get used to.She didn’t hear Nikolai wake up, but she felt him by the shift on the bed and the warmth of his presence. He sat beside her silently, his thigh brushing hers in a quiet comfort. “You didn’t sleep,” he said softly, more like a statement than a question. Cassie shook her head. Her voice was hoarse. “Every time I closed my eyes, I saw it.”Nikolai sighed. He was quiet for a moment. Then he reached out and took her wrists gently, lifting her hands into the morning light.“Steady yourself, your brain, and your emotions,” he murmured. Her hands weren’t shaking like the night before. Cassie almost laughed, a hollow and broken sound. “I don’t feel steady.”Nikolai turne

Nikolai’s eyes darkened as he leaned closer, brushing her cheek with his thumb, soft and intimate, but his voice held firmness. “You were in the army, Cassie. You were trained to act. To handle threats. To eliminate enemies.”Her heart lurched at the word.Enemies?“You were prepared for this long before this day. You came back to take revenge on the Vanderbilts,” he said. “You think your hands are stained? Cassie… you’ve handled far worse. The difference is that this time, you feel something.”“I shouldn’t feel it,” she whispered.“You shouldn’t,” he agreed coldly. “Not for them.”Cassie swallowed, her throat tightening.Nikolai leaned even closer, his forehead almost touching hers.“The Vanderbilts are not innocent civilians. They are the reason your parents are dead. The reason your first child was stolen. The reason you learned to wake up fighting.”His tone dipped lower, and harder.“They are the enemy, Cassie. They killed your parents without mercy. And you’re questioning a sli

Evening that day...News spreads fast. But pain spreads faster.Within a few hours, every channel, every gossip page, and every headline screamed the same thing:VANDERBILT TRAGEDY — MOTHER BRAIN DEAD, HEIRESS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFECassie was folding laundry when the alert flashed across the TV screen, breaking news, an accident, Regina Vanderbilt in critical condition, shots of ambulances, a spinning aerial of the mangled car caught on CCTV footage. The news also reported Regina’s brain-dead condition and Mabel's amputated legs. The anchor’s voice blurred into one long, horrible wave. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe. The shirts slipped from her fingers and fell to the floor. Her mouth went dry; a cold claw closed around her stomach. She stumbled toward the bathroom on legs that felt suddenly foreign. She retched into the toilet until her throat burned until there was nothing left to give. EARLIER!!!The afternoon sun streamed through the wide hospital windows, indifferent to pain, shining too brightly for what was about to come.Raymond had barely slept. The sound of the heart monitor in his private ward had become an unbearable reminder of his own fragility. His accident, though not fatal, had shaken him more than he wanted to admit. He’d spent most of the time staring at the ceiling, thinking about Cassie, her cold eyes, her defiance, the way she looked at him like he was nothing. And then there was the accident. His car hadn’t just “malfunctioned.” He was certain of it. He could still see the way the steering wheel jerked out of his grip, the tires screaming against the asphalt before everything went black. He knew it wasn't a coincidence.Cassie’s name lingered in his mind like poison. When his phone rang, he didn’t expect the world to end.He reached for it lazily, pressing it to his ear with a groggy sigh. “What is it?”The voice, on the other hand, trembled wi

  • I Married His Enemy: Return Of The Forgotten Princess    Regina And Mabel's Accident

The car swerved violently to the left, tires screeching against the asphalt. The world spun around them, buildings, light posts, screaming horns, everything a blur of motion and terror.Regina’s shopping bags flew into the air, spilling jewels, shoes, and designer silk across the seats.“WHAT’S HAPPENING?!” Mabel screamed, clutching at the seatbelt.“Stop the car! STOP IT!” Regina shouted, grabbing onto the door handle. The driver slammed on the brakes, but the car wouldn’t respond. It fishtailed, veering into the opposite lane. A truck blared its horn, a deafening warning that came too late. The impact was catastrophic.Glass shattered like rain. Metal twisted and folded with a sickening screech. The world exploded into noise and darkness. Then, silence.Smoke curled from the mangled wreck, mingling with the faint scent of burning rubber. The once-flawless Bentley lay crushed against a concrete barrier, a grotesque ruin of its former glory.Passersby screamed, rushing toward the sce
