Chapter 4: The Gala Where We Pretend

"I need you to wear this."

Ethan dropped a garment bag on my bed at 6 AM on Saturday. I was still half-asleep, drooling on his expensive pillow because I had somehow migrated to the middle of the bed and stolen all the blankets.

"Do you ever knock?" I sat up, hair looking like a bird's nest.

"No. It's my house. And we're married. Husbands don't knock."

"We have separate rooms! And that door is supposed to be locked!"

"Which you forgot to lock last night," he said with a smirk, looking pointedly at the connecting door which was indeed wide open. "You even called my name in your sleep."

"I DID NOT!" My face turned red. "I was having a nightmare! You were the monster!"

"Sure. You were saying 'Ethan, don't leave' very monster-like."

I threw a pillow at him. He caught it easily.

"Wear this. Car leaves at seven. We have the Blackwood Foundation Gala tonight. Every board member will be there. Every investor. And every gossip columnist in Manila. If they think our marriage is fake, I lose the company and your ten million disappears."

He left before I could argue.

Inside the bag was a red dress. Silk, off-shoulder, body-hugging. The kind of dress made for a woman who was confident, sexy, and not someone who lived in tsinelas and oversized shirts.

There was a note stuck to it:

You said red was your power color when you were 16. - E

I froze.

When I was 16, at my debut, I didn't have a fancy gown. I wore a simple red dress my mother sewed. Ethan was there because our parents forced us.

He had whispered, "You don't look like my enemy tonight. You look like trouble."

I told him red was my power color.

He remembered.

Downstairs at 7 PM, I walked down the grand staircase feeling like I was going to trip and die. The dress fit perfectly, hugging every curve I usually hid. My hair was curled, my lips red.

Ethan was waiting at the bottom in a black tuxedo. He looked up.

And stopped breathing.

For a full five seconds, the billionaire CEO who always had something annoying to say just stared.

"You..." He cleared his throat. "You look... acceptable."

"Acceptable?" I wanted to slap him. I spent two hours looking acceptable?

He walked up the stairs, met me halfway, and offered his hand.

"What I meant was, you look like my wife. And my wife is never just acceptable. She is the most beautiful woman in any room."

My heart did a stupid, traitorous flip.

"Good save, Blackwood," I whispered, taking his hand.

"Rule number three," he whispered back, his lips brushing my ear. "Tonight, you are madly in love with me."

"And you?"

"I'm madly obsessed with you. It's not that hard to act."

The gala was everything I hated. Crystal chandeliers, women with diamonds bigger than their smiles, men who whispered "charity case" behind their wine glasses.

And Chloe.

Of course Chloe was there. Chloe Santos — Ethan's ex-girlfriend, Manila socialite, perfect face, perfect body, and the girl who had laughed when Ethan rejected me at eighteen.

"Sienna?" Chloe's fake surprised voice cut through the crowd. "Oh my god! Is that you? Ethan, you didn't tell me you married... your childhood helper?"

I felt Ethan's hand tighten around my waist.

"Ex-girlfriend," Ethan said coldly. "And ex-friend of my wife. Chloe, you remember Sienna. My wife."

Chloe laughed, looking me up and down. "That dress is cute. Is it... rented?"

This was where old Sienna would have run to the bathroom crying.

But new Sienna — Mrs. Blackwood for a year, with a revenge plan — remembered what Ethan's hand on her waist felt like.

I smiled, sweet and sharp. "Actually, Chloe, Ethan picked it. He said red is my power color. He remembers everything about me. That's what husbands do, right? They remember. Unlike some people who are so forgettable, their ex-boyfriends have to marry someone else to finally forget them."

Chloe's face froze. Ethan made a choking sound that was half laugh, half cough.

"And this necklace?" I touched the delicate diamond necklace Ethan had put on me in the car. "He said it matches my eyes. Which is weird because he always said my eyes were too angry. Guess he likes angry now."

I turned to Ethan, stood on my tiptoes, and kissed him. Right on the mouth. In front of Chloe. In front of everyone.

It was supposed to be fake. A show for Chloe. A power move.

But Ethan responded like he had been waiting for it all night. His hand slid up my back, pulling me flush against him, his mouth opening against mine, deep and possessive. He kissed me like he was proving a point to every man in the room.

When we broke apart, both breathing hard, the whole gala was staring. Chloe had disappeared.

"That," Ethan whispered against my lips, his forehead touching mine, "was not part of rule number three."

"You said madly in love," I breathed. "I was improvising."

"Do that again and I won't be able to pretend this is a contract."

His eyes were dark. His thumb was rubbing circles on my bare back, giving me goosebumps.

For the first time, I realized my revenge plan had a huge flaw.

What if my enemy kissed better than any man I had ever met? What if my enemy was the only man who ever looked at me like I was his entire world?

What if I married my childhood enemy... and I liked it?

"Don't look at me like that, Enemy," Ethan said quietly, but he didn't pull away.

"Like what?"

"Like you're starting to forget why you hate me."

I wasn't forgetting. I was remembering. The spelling bee. The bike. The crayons. The boy who held my ears during thunderstorms.

And that was much more dangerous than hate.

  • I Married My Childhood Enemy   The Real Wedding

Chapter 10: The Real Wedding Our first wedding was a contract in a hospital room. No dress, no flowers, no vows. Just a ring and ten million pesos and a dying father's monitor beeping in the background. Our second wedding was one year, one month, and three days later. In Cabanatuan. My mother cried when she saw the backyard. "Sienna, this is too much! We said small!" It wasn't small. Ethan rented white fairy lights and covered our entire mango tree with them. He set up long tables where my father's restaurant staff served lechon and pancit. He flew in Lolo Arthur's old lawyer who kept wiping his eyes and saying "Arthur would have loved this." I was in a red dress again. Not the expensive silk one from the gala. A simple, soft red dress my mother sewed, just like my debut dress when I was sixteen. The one Ethan said made me look like trouble. "Are you ready, Enemy?" My father stood next to me, in a new barong, his heart beating strong. No oxygen tube. No monitor. Just my papa, ali

Chapter 9: The Real Vows ONE YEAR LATER - EPILOGUE The contract said one year. On our 365th day of marriage, Ethan left a document on our kitchen counter. Not a divorce paper. It was a new contract. Handwritten. On the back of my old spelling bee certificate that he had framed again and hung in our hallway. NEW CONTRACT FOR SIENNA ALVAREZ-BLACKWOOD Clause 1: The previous contract of one year is null and void because both parties failed spectacularly at Rule #1. Clause 2: The husband, Ethan Blackwood, admits he has been in love with his wife since she was five years old and hit him with a shovel in the sandbox. Clause 3: The wife, Sienna Blackwood, is allowed to keep plotting revenge on Ramon Blackwood, but only if her husband holds her hand while she does it. Clause 4: No more separate rooms. Ever. The connecting door is to be removed and replaced with a bookshelf. Clause 5: Lifetime. No divorce. No expiry. Renewed every day by kissing. Sign below: ________________ I found

  • I Married My Childhood Enemy   How To Prove A Marriage Is Real

Chapter 8: How To Prove A Marriage is Real The Blackwood boardroom was not a room. It was a glass cage on the 42nd floor of the Blackwood Tower in BGC, with a view of all of Manila that made you feel small. And twelve old men in suits were staring at me like I was on trial for marrying their billionaire prince. Ramon Blackwood sat at the head, smiling like he had already won. Miguel, Ethan's cousin — handsome, smug, wearing a watch that cost more than my father's restaurant — sat next to him. "Sienna Alvarez-Blackwood," the lead board member said, reading my name like it was a typo. "We are here because Lolo Arthur's will states Ethan must have a 'genuine and loving marriage' to inherit. The board has... concerns that this marriage, done in three days with no dating period, is contractual." "With all respect," Miguel said, not respecting at all, "Ethan married his childhood enemy from Cabanatuan. A girl whose family owes us money. It looks like charity. Or worse, fraud." Ethan's

  • I Married My Childhood Enemy   The Morning After The Contract Died

Chapter 7: The Morning After The Contract Died I woke up to sunlight and the worst realization of my life. I was in Ethan Blackwood's bed. Wearing Ethan Blackwood's shirt. Which was way too big and smelled exactly like him. And Ethan Blackwood was awake, lying on his side, watching me like I was a math problem he couldn't solve. "Good morning, Mrs. Blackwood," he said, voice husky from sleep. Panic hit me instantly. Oh my god. I broke all my rules. I kissed my enemy. I slept in his bed. I told him to break his rules. What happened to revenge? What happened to my plan? I sat up so fast the blanket fell. "Okay, last night didn't happen," I blurted. "We were emotional. There were old emails. A video. We were both... we were not thinking. So let's pretend—" Ethan's face fell. Just for a second, but I saw it. "Pretend it didn't happen?" He sat up too. Shirtless. I tried very hard not to stare at his shoulders, his chest, the abs I didn't know he had under all those suits. My childh

  • I Married My Childhood Enemy   The Night The Rules Broke

Chapter 6: The Night The Rules Broke For a full minute after he said it, neither of us moved. "I am so in love with you it makes me hate myself." Ethan Blackwood, my childhood enemy, the boy who stole my crayons, pushed me into the mud, and rejected me in front of our entire high school, was standing in his office, surrounded by the proof that he had tried to save my family, confessing he was in love with me. And I was standing there in my old shorts, crying, realizing my five-year revenge plan was built on a lie. "You don't get to say that," I whispered. My voice was hoarse from crying. "You don't get to say you're in love with me after you made me hate you for five years." "I know," he said. He looked broken. Not like a billionaire CEO. Like the seventeen-year-old boy in the video who punched a wall because he hurt me. "You should hate me. It's safer if you hate me." "Stop telling me what is safer!" I crossed the room. I don't know if I wanted to slap him or kiss him. My hand

  • I Married My Childhood Enemy   The Truth In His Office

Chapter 5: The Truth In His Office I didn't mean to break rule number two again. But after the gala kiss, Ethan had been avoiding me for two days. No breakfast together. No annoying comments about my music. The connecting door stayed locked from his side. He kissed me like he wanted to devour me in front of 200 people, and now he was acting like I had a contagious disease. Fine. If he could be cold, I could be colder. And I could finally do what I married him for. Revenge. I waited until his car left for his office at 8 AM. His office at home was still unlocked from the night I found the photo. Code 0812. His birthday. The boy was annoyingly predictable. This time I wasn't looking for a photo. I was looking for the truth. My family didn't just lose money. We lost everything. In 2018, my father owned three branches of Alvarez Homestyle Restaurant in Bulacan. Good, honest business. Then Blackwood Holdings bought all our suppliers and tripled the price. My father had to close two
