Chapter 3

Autor: Pretty Handsome
Everyone looked at me as if I were their enemy.

Henry was crying uncontrollably in Howard’s arms. He was pointing at me and shouting, “I hate him! Make him leave!”

Tiffany pointed toward the door and said, “Get out.”

Before I could even react, I was forcibly shoved out by Howard.

The door slammed shut. From inside the room behind me, I could hear them cursing at me.

It was drizzling outside.

I reached into my pants pocket and realized I had left my car keys inside the room.

I turned around and pounded on the door several times. Someone inside yelled through the door, “What are you coming back for with that shameless face? Do you want to scare Henry to death?!”

“Give me my car keys!” I shouted.

Tiffany’s voice came through. “Henry will get stressed out when he sees you. We can’t open the door. Figure out a way to get home on your own.”

I dropped my hand. My chest felt tight, and my whole body slowly soaked through with dampness.

I stood in the rain for nearly an hour before I finally hailed a cab.

As soon as I got in the car, I received a message from a college classmate.

[Brendon, are you still going to pick up your father-in-law’s next round of medication?]

Ever since his heart surgery, Dan had seemed to be in the pink of health. However, his health was constantly in danger.

The doctor prescribed an imported medication that he needed to take over the long-term without interruption. It was hard to find in the country.

So, I had asked a classmate to help me secure a reliable source.

The medicine was outrageously expensive. It was nearly $4,000 per box, but no one has ever brought up the payment. I have always covered it myself.

Since he was no longer my father-in-law, I obviously did not have to continue paying.

I replied, [I won’t be paying for it anymore.]

He replied quickly.

[What’s going on? Isn’t the medicine working?]

[We broke up.]

My classmate was silent for quite a while, then finally replied.

[It’s really surprising that you two broke up. After all, you were genuinely good to her.]

[I still remember back in college when you helped Tiffany with her projects and wrote her thesis. You were so exhausted you didn’t even have time to eat. You did that all just so she could graduate on time.]

[I never thought that after graduation, the two of you wouldn’t end up together.]

I replied, [It’s all in the past.]

I closed my eyes and slept the whole way home in the car.

When I got home, I added the WhatsApp contact my professor had sent me.

Her username was simple. It was just her name, Claire Hope.

I hesitated for a moment. Then, I sent her a message.

[I’m going to be very candid with you. I just went through a breakup, and it didn’t end very well.]

She replied quickly.

[I know. You had a fiancee before, right?]

I was about to send another message. I realized it might be hard to explain clearly over text, so I just called her instead.

In one go, I told her the whole story about Tiffany and myself.

She said, “I only need the right person to marry. What happened to you wasn’t your fault. Since you’ve decided to part ways, I don’t see any problems.

“Let’s go get our marriage certificate in three days.”

I was slightly taken aback.

It was the day Tiffany and I had planned to get our marriage license.

She had a child with someone else. I was about to marry someone else too.

“Okay.”

After ending the call, I was just about to send Tiffany a message to officially break up with her.

I was halfway through typing it when the door opened.

As soon as Tiffany walked in, she pointed her finger at me and accused me.

“Brendon, you were deliberately being rude and caused trouble today. You gave my dad a heart attack!

“You single-handedly ruined what was supposed to be a happy family dinner!

“You scared Henry so much that he still feels insecure and hasn’t stopped crying.

“To make it up to Henry and help him feel more secure, you don’t need to go to the marriage registration in three days. Howard and I will go instead.

“That way, no one will ever call Henry an illegitimate child again. He’ll be able to grow up healthy and confident too.

“Henry’s crippling anxiety is all your fault, so Howard and I are going to register our marriage as an atonement for you. You can’t object to that.”

I thought about how I was supposed to go register our marriage in three days as well.

I nodded. “Works for me.”

  • I Married Someone Else During Thanksgiving   Chapter 9

We went to a small coastal town abroad. The house had a small yard. A lemon tree grew in it.Claire liked to sit under the lemon tree and read, while I brewed tea for her right beside her.The tea had been sent by Alfred. He said it was grown by the family of one of his students from their hometown. When I finished brewing it and brought it over, she looked up and smiled at me. Her eyes crinkled like the clear, sunny sky by the sea.I started a company here and have a steady income. So, I did not have to work day and night like I used to.Claire taught at a nearby college. Our life is incredibly simple, but very peaceful. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking photos by the sea.The old man was holding his phone while the old woman struck a pose. They were both laughing heartily.Claire suddenly said, “We’ll be like that someday, won’t we?”I squeezed her hand. “We will.”She tilted her face up. “Brendon, do you regret it? Leaving that pla

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Claire furrowed her brow and tried to step forward. I gently held her back.I broke free from Tiffany’s grip and took half a step back. When I did not budge, Tiffany began crying even louder and plopped down on the ground.“Look at this! This man has been with me for three years, but now he’s hooked up with another woman and is about to leave the country!“I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old child. He didn’t even ask a single question about them!“Tell me, has his conscience gone to the dogs?!”More and more travelers gathered around. An older woman, hands on her hips, said, “Look at this girl crying like this, that man is a real scoundrel.”“Exactly. He’s got a child and still wants to run away? People like this should be exposed!”Claire stepped forward and raised her voice.“Everyone, don’t just listen to her side of the story! That child isn’t my husband’s. It’s hers and her childhood sweetheart’s!

“When Dad passed away, I promised him I’d take good care of you, and I kept my word. But from now on, you’re on your own.”She panicked. “Brendon! Please don’t do this! I was wrong! I really do realize I was wrong! Just forgive me this once. I’ll do whatever you say from now on!”Even though she could not see me, I shook my head.“It’s too late, Joy. When you handed that kid the candy at Thanksgiving dinner, why didn’t you think about the fact that I’m your brother?”I hung up the phone and blocked both her and Tiffany.Claire had not said a word the entire time. She sat beside me, peeling an apple quietly. When she was done, she handed it to me. “Take a bite. It’s sweet. Tomorrow, we’ll go to the supermarket and buy some daily necessities. The day after tomorrow, we’ll fly overseas to check out our new home.”I nodded.I took the apple and bit into it. Sure enough, it was sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened a little.Claire did not ask if I was upset. She just leaned ov

I stared at those letters and did not answer.Claire glanced at me and said, “You could just answer and set the record straight with her.”I shook my head. “There’s nothing to say. I don’t want to take her call.”I rejected the call. But Tiffany would not let it go. She called seven times in a row. Finally, I had no choice but to answer.Tiffany immediately yelled at me. “Brendon, where’s my dad’s medicine?! You still haven’t delivered this month’s supply! What are you playing at?”I held the phone without saying a word. When I did not respond, Tiffany got even angrier.“Are you mute? I’m telling you, come over right now and bring the medicine. Don’t forget to pay for the next round of treatment. I’ll pretend nothing ever happened. Do you hear me?”I took a deep breath and said, “Tiffany, I’m married now. We have no connection whatsoever. I have no reason to be responsible for your father’s medicine.”There was a second of silence on the other end of the line before an even

Claire hooked her arm through mine and took a good look at the people in front of us.Furrowing her brow, she asked, “Who are you? What gives you the right to tell my husband to get lost?”“Husband?”Tiffany repeated the term. She looked at me with a mix of shock and anger. “Who is she?”Before I could say a word, Claire had already pulled out the marriage certificate from her bag and waved it in front of Tiffany’s face. “I’m his wife. We just got married today.”Tiffany’s face went pale in an instant, and Howard froze in his tracks.More and more onlookers gathered around us.Tiffany turned to me in disbelief. “Brendon, you… you’re married? You went and got married to another woman before we’d even broken up? Have you no shame?!”Howard quickly chimed in.“You haven’t even officially broken up with Tiffany yet, and you’ve already married someone else. What else is that but cheating?“Everyone, come take a look at this dude. He hasn’t even broken up with his girlfriend yet,

Tiffany seemed a little surprised. She asked me, “You really don’t mind? Are you really not upset?”“I’m not upset,” I said. “No one wants their child to be called an illegitimate child.”She let out a sigh of relief and nodded.“You’re right to take it in stride.“I’ll leave the wedding arrangements up to you. In the eyes of others, we’re a married couple. It doesn’t matter whose name is on the marriage certificate.”I nodded wordlessly. She continued, “There’s just one more thing. Giving birth to Henry took a heavy toll on my body, so let’s not have any more children after we’re married.“You’ll raise Henry as your own son. He’s very smart. He’s a promising young man worth nurturing. We’ll leave all our assets to him. He’ll definitely take care of you in your old age.”I nodded without hesitation. “Okay.”She paused for a moment. Her brow furrowed slightly as a hint of unease flashed in her eyes.“Why are you being so understanding today?”I smiled. “We’re about to get ma
