Chapter 4

Author: Pretty Handsome
Tiffany seemed a little surprised.

She asked me, “You really don’t mind? Are you really not upset?”

“I’m not upset,” I said. “No one wants their child to be called an illegitimate child.”

She let out a sigh of relief and nodded.

“You’re right to take it in stride.

“I’ll leave the wedding arrangements up to you. In the eyes of others, we’re a married couple. It doesn’t matter whose name is on the marriage certificate.”

I nodded wordlessly.

She continued, “There’s just one more thing. Giving birth to Henry took a heavy toll on my body, so let’s not have any more children after we’re married.

“You’ll raise Henry as your own son. He’s very smart. He’s a promising young man worth nurturing. We’ll leave all our assets to him. He’ll definitely take care of you in your old age.”

I nodded without hesitation. “Okay.”

She paused for a moment. Her brow furrowed slightly as a hint of unease flashed in her eyes.

“Why are you being so understanding today?”

I smiled. “We’re about to get married. Why dwell on such things?”

She visibly let out a sigh of relief.

“I thought you were just sulking.

“I’m glad you’ve come to terms with it. After all, you’re about to have me. You really should be content.

“Honey, I truly love you. Seeing you so understanding makes my heart ache for you.

“I promise that from now on, we’ll live a peaceful life. Even though I had a child with him, I won’t let him or his son disrupt our lives.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than her cell phone rang.

She answered it.

On the other end, a child was crying and faintly calling out, “Mommy.”

After hanging up, she glanced at me with a look of hesitation.

“Henry misses me. I have to go see him. He’s so young. This is exactly when he needs his mom the most. You don’t mind, do you?”

I said, “Go ahead.”

She left.

After the door closed, I sat on the couch and received two messages from Howard.

[You’re a piece of trash who couldn’t even get a marriage certificate or a child. Do you really think she’s going to marry you? She’s just using you to support me and my son! But that’s fine. I know you’ll be on your knees, desperately taking good care of us!]

[You’ve been a most loyal dog. Work hard, so you can support us when we have a second child.]

I did not delete them, nor did I reply. I just took screenshots of the messages.

Tiffany did not come back for three days.

I had not contacted her during those three days either, because I had been busy meeting with Claire.

Claire was even prettier in person than in her photos. Her smile was refreshingly genuine.

On the morning of the third day, Claire and I went to get our marriage certificate.

After leaving the County Clerk’s office, Claire went to a nearby print shop to make copies of the documents.

I stood at the entrance waiting for her. The marriage certificate we had just received was tucked in my bag.

Just then, a black sedan pulled up to the curb.

Tiffany and Howard got out of the car.

Tiffany spotted me at once. Her expression immediately changed. “Brendon, you promised me you wouldn’t make a scene. Why did you still follow me all the way here?!”

Howard also stepped forward and stood right in front of me. Then, he spoke loudly on purpose.

“Dear god, have you no shame? We’re about to get married, and you’re still trying to meddle. Is this supposed to be a joke?”

There were quite a few people around waiting to get their marriage certificates. Upon hearing that, they all turned to look in our direction.

Feeling embarrassed, I explained. “I’m not here to see you two.”

“What are you playing at?” Howard’s voice rose even higher. “You chased us all the way to the door of the County Clerk’s office, and you’re still trying to play it cool?!

“I’m warning you. If you dare harass my wife one more time, I’ll beat you to a pulp!

“Get out of here. Don’t ruin this happy occasion for us.”

Tiffany’s expression turned cold as well. “Brendon, you’re really making a spectacle of yourself today. Just leave already. I don’t want you to embarrass yourself any further.”

Just then, a clear, bright voice rang out from behind us.

“How is my husband embarrassing himself?”

We went to a small coastal town abroad. The house had a small yard. A lemon tree grew in it.Claire liked to sit under the lemon tree and read, while I brewed tea for her right beside her.The tea had been sent by Alfred. He said it was grown by the family of one of his students from their hometown. When I finished brewing it and brought it over, she looked up and smiled at me. Her eyes crinkled like the clear, sunny sky by the sea.I started a company here and have a steady income. So, I did not have to work day and night like I used to.Claire taught at a nearby college. Our life is incredibly simple, but very peaceful. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking photos by the sea.The old man was holding his phone while the old woman struck a pose. They were both laughing heartily.Claire suddenly said, “We’ll be like that someday, won’t we?”I squeezed her hand. “We will.”She tilted her face up. “Brendon, do you regret it? Leaving that pla

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Claire furrowed her brow and tried to step forward. I gently held her back.I broke free from Tiffany’s grip and took half a step back. When I did not budge, Tiffany began crying even louder and plopped down on the ground.“Look at this! This man has been with me for three years, but now he’s hooked up with another woman and is about to leave the country!“I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old child. He didn’t even ask a single question about them!“Tell me, has his conscience gone to the dogs?!”More and more travelers gathered around. An older woman, hands on her hips, said, “Look at this girl crying like this, that man is a real scoundrel.”“Exactly. He’s got a child and still wants to run away? People like this should be exposed!”Claire stepped forward and raised her voice.“Everyone, don’t just listen to her side of the story! That child isn’t my husband’s. It’s hers and her childhood sweetheart’s!

“When Dad passed away, I promised him I’d take good care of you, and I kept my word. But from now on, you’re on your own.”She panicked. “Brendon! Please don’t do this! I was wrong! I really do realize I was wrong! Just forgive me this once. I’ll do whatever you say from now on!”Even though she could not see me, I shook my head.“It’s too late, Joy. When you handed that kid the candy at Thanksgiving dinner, why didn’t you think about the fact that I’m your brother?”I hung up the phone and blocked both her and Tiffany.Claire had not said a word the entire time. She sat beside me, peeling an apple quietly. When she was done, she handed it to me. “Take a bite. It’s sweet. Tomorrow, we’ll go to the supermarket and buy some daily necessities. The day after tomorrow, we’ll fly overseas to check out our new home.”I nodded.I took the apple and bit into it. Sure enough, it was sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened a little.Claire did not ask if I was upset. She just leaned ov

I stared at those letters and did not answer.Claire glanced at me and said, “You could just answer and set the record straight with her.”I shook my head. “There’s nothing to say. I don’t want to take her call.”I rejected the call. But Tiffany would not let it go. She called seven times in a row. Finally, I had no choice but to answer.Tiffany immediately yelled at me. “Brendon, where’s my dad’s medicine?! You still haven’t delivered this month’s supply! What are you playing at?”I held the phone without saying a word. When I did not respond, Tiffany got even angrier.“Are you mute? I’m telling you, come over right now and bring the medicine. Don’t forget to pay for the next round of treatment. I’ll pretend nothing ever happened. Do you hear me?”I took a deep breath and said, “Tiffany, I’m married now. We have no connection whatsoever. I have no reason to be responsible for your father’s medicine.”There was a second of silence on the other end of the line before an even

Claire hooked her arm through mine and took a good look at the people in front of us.Furrowing her brow, she asked, “Who are you? What gives you the right to tell my husband to get lost?”“Husband?”Tiffany repeated the term. She looked at me with a mix of shock and anger. “Who is she?”Before I could say a word, Claire had already pulled out the marriage certificate from her bag and waved it in front of Tiffany’s face. “I’m his wife. We just got married today.”Tiffany’s face went pale in an instant, and Howard froze in his tracks.More and more onlookers gathered around us.Tiffany turned to me in disbelief. “Brendon, you… you’re married? You went and got married to another woman before we’d even broken up? Have you no shame?!”Howard quickly chimed in.“You haven’t even officially broken up with Tiffany yet, and you’ve already married someone else. What else is that but cheating?“Everyone, come take a look at this dude. He hasn’t even broken up with his girlfriend yet,
