The Siberian night split apart.

The earth’s crust beneath the ice finally gave way.

Far below, in a trench ten thousand meters deep, something ancient shifted in its sleep.

The frozen wasteland tore open, carved into dozens of chasms hundreds of meters wide.

Seawater poured through the fractures, flooding toward the mantle below.

Magma met water.

Columns of white steam erupted skyward.

That unnatural heartbeat echoed again and again, using the entire continent as a broken drum.

Each pulse hammered against the land.

Outside, even hardened veterans could no longer endure the primal pressure.

They collapsed into the snow by the dozens.

Bloody fluid mixed with pale tissue seeped from their noses and ears.

Their fingers had curled so tightly they could no longer straighten them enough to pull a trigger.

Vivienne stepped across the violently shaking ice.

The heel of her black shoe shattered a thin crust of frost.

She walked slowly.

Steadily.

After only a few steps, she stopped before a colossal lead door marked:

EXTREME CRYOGENIC PUNISHMENT CHAMBER

The blast-resistant observation glass was buried beneath thick layers of frost.

The temperature gauge had long since frozen in place at the crimson warning mark:

–120°C.

Inside, Alexander knelt bare-chested on a floor of solid ice.

Sharp icicles hung from his dark lashes and broad shoulders.

The violent purple-black parasite embedded beside his heart had been frozen into a pale, lifeless mass.

His eyes remained shut.

Even his brainwave activity had been deliberately severed.

He had forced the last trace of warmth deep into his lungs.

Using impossible cold, he had locked away both his body and the forbidden obsession buried inside his heart.

The obsession he held for his master.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor behind her.

An aide stumbled forward.

A jagged wound split his forehead open.

Blood streamed down his face.

Both hands held a black emergency communication disk above his head.

“Miss Vivienne!”

His teeth chattered violently.

“The European executive council... they've shut down the primary nuclear drive shaft!”

“They’re sacrificing Subject Zero!”

“They’re sealing you inside the vault with him!”

“Use the Sovereign Protocol! Open an escape pod and leave! Forget about him!”

Red warning lights flashed throughout the corridor.

Alarms screamed.

Vivienne lowered her gaze toward the communication disk.

Her left hand moved.

A fingernail slipped beneath the metal clasp at her wrist.

The Sovereign Watch—symbol of absolute authority—fell onto the floor.

The casing cracked.

The tip of her black heel pressed down upon it.

Then crushed.

The core chip shattered together with the reinforced shell.

The aide stared.

Speechless.

Even the pain from his torn scalp vanished from his awareness.

“Close your mouth.”

Her tone remained calm.

“Since when do two pieces of scrap metal get to decide the fate of something I keep in my house?”

She turned.

One hand overturned a nearby equipment rack.

Metal crashed across the floor.

From the pile, she dragged out a military-grade hydraulic cutter weighing over a hundred pounds.

The jaws locked onto the lowest support axle of the lead door's locking mechanism.

Her boot planted firmly against the frozen threshold.

Her waist twisted.

Leg muscles drove the movement.

Pure physical force.

Metal screamed.

The load-bearing lock shaft exploded apart.

The one-meter-thick blast door was literally torn open, leaving a gap half a meter wide.

The moment the seal broke, a hurricane of subzero air burst outward.

Frozen wind and razor-sharp ice shards tore through the corridor.

Vivienne hooked a finger beneath her coat collar.

Buttons snapped free.

The custom thermal overcoat hit the muddy floor.

Beneath it remained only a black silk nightdress.

Thin fabric clung to her skin.

The sharp lines of her shoulder blades showed through.

She kicked off her heels.

Barefoot.

No thermal shield.

No environmental controls.

Nothing.

She stepped directly into the dead zone.

Frost immediately spread across the silk around her thighs.

Only two steps in.

Vivienne's back tightened violently.

A shiver escaped her.

Just once.

One tiny involuntary reaction.

Yet that single second pierced straight through Alexander’s frozen consciousness.

The dormant muscles beneath his massive frame contracted.

Violently.

The sight of her pale skin turning blue shattered every remaining wall of restraint.

Fear.

Panic.

Rage.

All at once.

A broken roar exploded from his throat.

Ice tore from his body.

Blood followed.

His arms swung outward wildly.

The poisoned spikes on his skin nearly slashed across her face.

“Get out!”

The words emerged through blood and ruined vocal cords.

Vivienne did not retreat.

Instead, she stepped forward.

The torn edge of an ice shard ripped through her dress.

A thin line of blood appeared along her thigh.

Both hands buried themselves in his frozen hair.

She gripped hard.

Pulled backward.

Forcing him to raise his head.

Forcing him to look directly at her.

Their faces met in a violent, unyielding clash.

The collision was immediate.

Brutal.

Neither yielded an inch.

“Sacrifice my marked property to the gods?”

She breathed heavily.

Each word landed like a blade.

“I want you alive.”

“Breathing.”

“Even if one day all that's left is a rabid beast that bites everything in sight.”

“You'll stay beside my bed until the day you rot.”

The words shattered the last remnants of reason.

Territorial instinct consumed every rule of master and servant.

Alexander’s massive frame surged forward.

One burning hand locked around her waist.

Hard.

He lifted her bodily upward.

Her back slammed into the ice-covered metal wall.

Against her pressed a chest radiating enough heat to melt steel.

Their bodies collided in violent intimacy.

Magnetic fields and raw heat flared, harmonizing in the frozen void.

Biological currents surged exponentially.

The dead mass beside Alexander's heart began to change.

The outer layer split apart.

Beneath it emerged a dense lattice of dark-gold energy.

The network spread down his arm.

Wrapped around the woman in his grasp.

Perfectly.

Completely.

Within the frozen death zone, a pocket of absolute warmth formed.

The amplified electromagnetic pulse shot downward through the fractures reaching toward Earth's core.

It struck the energy waves emitted by the ancient progenitor deep beneath the ocean floor.

A muffled, furious impact echoed from the abyss.

Several of the creature's writhing appendages snapped apart.

Instantly.

The earthquakes ceased.

Across the global darknet, every monitoring feed tracking the event went dark.

Screens flickered.

Then turned to static.

The cold began to retreat.

Ice melted from the walls.

Water dripped onto the metal floor.

Forming shallow pools.

One of Alexander's arms remained wrapped around her waist.

Unyielding.

His other hand rested against the back of her neck.

Rough calluses brushed across sensitive skin.

The hesitation in his eyes was gone.

Only ruthless possessiveness remained.

Vivienne finally found enough space to draw a breath.

She prepared to answer his overwhelming assault.

Then she felt it.

The primary branch of the newly transformed golden shield-vine slipped silently through the torn collar of her dress.

The tip touched the hollow beneath her left collarbone.

A gentle sting.

No blood appeared.

Yet beneath pale skin, ancient crimson symbols slowly emerged.

Two lines of unfamiliar numbers and runes.

They crawled along the paths of her veins.

Flashing.

Counting down.

Etching themselves permanently into flesh.

A blood-red covenant of life and death.
