Chapter 1

Author: Miss July
On the first day of school, I practically bounced out of the luxury car, more excited to attend class than I had ever been in my life.

The reason was simple. Thanks to my mom’s efforts, my good days were finally about to begin.

Half a year ago, she said she wanted to go overseas for a break. She transferred me a sum for living expenses and left without hesitation.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it.

Who would’ve thought my mom was actually that capable? The moment she made her move, she landed herself a billionaire husband—the richest man in Kingsford.

The day after my sophomore final exams ended, my mom shockingly woke up early just to call me.

“Sweetheart, pack your bags. Mom’s about to upgrade our entire lives.”

And just like that, I transferred from some nameless high school on the outskirts of Kingsford to the city’s top international academy.

I ran my fingers over my brand-new uniform and couldn’t stop grinning.

A blue cropped blazer paired with a pink-and-red plaid skirt. Every piece was custom-tailored. The whole thing looked straight out of a teen drama.

No wonder this school had such insane funding.

I marveled silently.

The roads were immaculate, the campus was massive, and even breathing here felt less stressful.

I craned my neck around, staring everywhere in fascination.

The downside of that was…

Bang!

I slammed straight into someone walking toward me.

Clutching my head, I saw stars and instantly knew I was going to end up with a huge bump.

“You okay?”

A warm, gentle voice drifted down from above me.

I grimaced and looked up, only to freeze on the spot.

Holy hell.

He was ridiculously handsome.

The guy had pale skin and sharply defined brows, the kind of face that screamed campus heartthrob.

I suppressed my dizziness and waved frantically. “I’m fine! Totally fine! Nothing happened!”

The next second, warm liquid streamed from my nose.

I touched it instinctively and nearly died from embarrassment.

Great.

Apparently, I had so little self-control that seeing a handsome guy gave me a nosebleed.

I wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.

“You probably hit your nose. Hold this first. I’ll take you to the infirmary.”

He handed me a handkerchief.

I accepted it automatically, but the moment it touched my fingers, the sensation was impossible to ignore.

The silk-like texture, the impossibly smooth feel, using something this luxurious to stop my nosebleed felt like an absolute waste.

When I didn’t move for a long moment, he reached over, guiding the handkerchief against my still-bleeding nose himself.

His movements were quick, yet surprisingly gentle.

“Don’t worry about staining it. It’s washable.”

Thump.

I heard my own heartbeat.

Was it love at first sight?

No.

It was cardiac exhaustion.

Nobody told me the infirmary was this ridiculously far from the teaching building.

After cleaning the blood off my face, the doctor checked my nose again. The bleeding had mostly stopped, though the tip was still a little red.

“It’s nothing serious. Just don’t touch it for the next couple of days.”

I nodded repeatedly. The moment I looked up, I spotted the clock on the wall.

Eight o’clock sharp.

“Um… excuse me, what time does class officially start?”

“Eight ten.”

I shot to my feet instantly and bolted out before even returning the handkerchief.

“Oh no, no, no… I’m definitely going to be late!”

Somehow, sheer determination pulled off a miracle.

A fifteen-minute walk was forcibly compressed into five.

I panted heavily and dropped into an empty seat at the back of the classroom.

“You must be the transfer student!”

The girl in front of me turned around enthusiastically and greeted me with a bright smile.

“Hi, I’m Mandy Lee!”

“I… I’m Arya Barnes… nice… to…”

Mandy couldn’t hold back her laughter anymore.

“What on earth happened to you?”

I waved my hand, on the verge of tears over that endless trek that felt eight hundred miles long.

“Wait, what’s that in your hand?”

I froze for a second before suddenly realizing that I forgot to return the handkerchief!

I thought back to the handsome guy’s kindness and my conscience immediately started tormenting me.

I should’ve asked for his contact first!

The international academy’s schedule was pretty reasonable. Three classes in the morning, two in the afternoon, and just like that, the day was over.

When I got home, my mom was already waiting for me in the living room for dinner.

Despite being in her forties, thanks to her completely unreasonable dedication to skincare and self-care, she looked no older than thirty.

“Baby, how was school? Settling in okay?”

She rested her chin on one hand and looked at me eagerly.

I tossed down my backpack and lazily collapsed onto the couch beside her.

“It was fine. Other than languages, I’m adapting pretty well.”

God knew how I survived that fully immersive foreign-language class.

The nonstop babbling sounded worse than those listening exam recordings with the guy constantly clearing his throat.

“What’s this?”

I pointed at the two gift boxes nearby.

My mom clapped her hands excitedly.

“Sharp eyes! These are gifts I brought back for you from Moris!”

“Royal chocolates! Hurry and try them!”

I raised a brow. “Why are there two boxes?”

“One is yours, and the other one is for your brother.”

I nodded automatically before suddenly processing her words.

“Wait. Me? Brother? I have a brother?”

My mom looked at me like I was overreacting.

“Oh, come on. A stepbrother still counts as a brother. He’s in the class next to yours. Bring it to him tomorrow.”

I spread my hands helplessly. “But I don’t even know who he is.”

My mom narrowed her eyes with a grin.

“The most handsome one. Go find him yourself.”

By the time we returned to school, the rankings had already been posted on the announcement board. This time, the student ranked first wasn’t one of the school’s famous prodigies. In fact, nobody had guessed it would be:Arya Barnes.Hazel never appeared in front of me again.Sometimes, when she spotted me from afar, she would even deliberately walk the other way.Sky practically bounced over the moment he saw me.“Holy crap, Arya. You’ve been hiding this level of genius the whole time?”Behind him, Michael simply stood there smiling quietly at me, just like the very first time we met. There was a saying that people of the same kind always recognized each other immediately.Maybe that was true.Because from the moment I first saw Michael, I’d noticed him instantly too.I waved my hand casually, still acting like my usual smug self.“It’s not that impressive.”The words sounded light and effortless. But behind them were years of waking before sunrise and studying late into the night at

The monthly exams arrived right on schedule.By evening, as the sun dipped behind the western hills, the final subject finally came to an end.The second the exam finished, Mandy practically sprinted over to me.“Oh my god, the language section was brutal this time! I swear even actual foreigners wouldn’t all pass that thing.”She wasn’t wrong. The moment the exams ended, complaints erupted everywhere about the insane difficulty spike this time around. As for me, I stayed unusually quiet.Without saying much, I packed my bag and hurried home because my mom was coming back today.“Honey! Give your mom a hug!”The second I walked through the door, my mom wrapped me in a huge embrace.Only then did I notice the man standing behind her.It was her new husband, Richard High.A gold watch gleamed on his wrist, the perfect picture of understated old-money wealth. Suddenly, I could absolutely see where Sky got his weird personality from.Richard himself seemed surprisingly easygoing.“I heard

If love was the blazing heat of summer, then a crush was the endless drizzle of spring rain.At first, I could still lie to myself and pretend this was just normal sibling bonding in a blended family.Every time he turned around after hearing me call him “bro,” ripples would stir quietly inside my chest.Later, when I drank with him, all I wanted was to make him a little happier. Whether he was actually my brother or not didn’t even matter anymore. But now, it felt like everything needed to return to where it belonged. At school, Mandy and I walked arm in arm toward the campus convenience store while discussing the outline for the upcoming monthly exams.“The scope for this exam is insane,” Mandy complained. “I seriously do not want to fail.”Without noticing, we bumped into someone.“Sorry!”I apologized automatically.“Heh.”A sharp, mocking scoff came from in front of me.Only then did I realize she’d done it on purpose.I frowned slightly. It was Hazel Yates, one of the team member

For several days in a row, I avoided seeing Michael intentionally.I stopped leaving the classroom during breaks and went straight home after school every day.Originally, I thought I could keep avoiding him like this forever.Unfortunately, I forgot about the Mathematical Modeling Club I’d signed up for earlier.Sky sent me a message. We’d exchanged contact the night we ate together.“Club meeting tonight. We’re assigning tasks, so don’t forget to come.”I stared at the message for two seconds before replying with a simple okay.A second later, another message popped up from him.“Did you and Michael fight or something lately?”What the hell?I frowned at the screen, completely confused about what he meant.Sky immediately followed up with a dog-face meme.“Michael said you seem kinda mad lately. I told him there’s no way someone as tiny as you could stay angry for long. You’re not his girlfriend.”I knew Sky was messing with me again.Since he couldn’t see my expression, I rolled my

It felt like a lightning bolt had struck me straight from the heavens.I was doomed. My world no longer had sunshine in it.I actually mistook the wrong person for my brother. And on top of that, I’d offended the real one.“What’s wrong?”Michael saw me freeze in place and asked with concern. On the verge of tears, I mumbled, “I mixed you up with my actual brother…”This time, Michael was the one left stunned. After several seconds of silence, he finally spoke.“So… you thought I was Sky? Sky High is actually your brother?”I nodded miserably and grabbed the untouched cake from the desk, preparing to go find Sky immediately.Michael walked out of the classroom with me.“Well, considering you mistakenly took me as your brother, I should probably come with you.”I figured that as long as I apologized sincerely enough, most people would let things slide.Unfortunately, the moment I saw Sky, I realized I’d spoken too soon. The second he heard I’d come to apologize, his ego instantly inflat

That evening, after surviving an entire aerobics workout, I was hungry enough to eat an entire cow. With absolute determination, I grabbed the black card my mom gave me and headed to the food street beside the park.“Hey, how much for the grilled squid?”“Six bucks a skewer.”“Six!?”I was stunned. Were prices in Kingsford actually this terrifying?Still, I had to maintain my nouveau riche image.“Do you take cards?”“Nope.”In the end, I still wound up buying a discounted sandwich from the convenience store.“Ding dong. Welcome.”The robotic voice announced another customer entering.“Arya?”I tilted my head and looked up in surprise, sauce still smeared around my mouth.“Bro!”Running into my billionaire stepbrother here of all places felt like a deeply concerning issue worth serious investigation.“Bro, be honest with me… your family didn’t go bankrupt or something, right?”“Hm?”Michael paused for a second before laughing softly. His laughter sounded like wind chimes—clear and rid
