Kael stood in the bedroom doorway with his arms crossed, watching her pack her clothes into a suitcase. He told himself he felt nothing. He had gotten used to that lie before, and it usually worked.

Elara moved through the room without wasting any time. She opened drawers, closed them, and decided what belonged to her in about one second, as if she had already practiced this exact scene in her mind a hundred times.

She did not take the jewelry. Kael watched her hand pass right over the case on the dresser. Inside that case were the diamond bracelet he had gifted her for their second anniversary and the emerald set he had also bought her the following year. She did not take a single piece of it.

She did not take the dresses either. Not the ones from their trip to Santorini, not the one from their fourth anniversary in Paris, the dress she had worn to dinner, the one he had once told her she looked beautiful in.

That dress stayed hanging in the closet. She reached past it and took older things instead: a worn cardigan and a pair of flat shoes she had owned since before she even met him.

What she took instead was only a few small things.

A stack of books from the nightstand. The covers looked soft and worn because she had read them many times.

One framed photo of two people Kael did not recognize. He thought they were probably her parents, but he suddenly realized he had never asked her about them.

And the plant from the kitchen window. She had kept that plant alive for five years, even though his mother always said she didn’t like it. Elara carefully wrapped the pot in a towel so the dirt would not spill in the car.

None of it added up to much. Could a person fit her entire marriage into two boxes and a suitcase? That fact alone sat wrong in Kael’s chest, even while he stood there with his arms crossed, trying hard to look like a man who was not affected by it.

She zipped the suitcase closed and carried it past him without saying a word.

He followed her downstairs. He stayed close enough to see her stop in the kitchen, close enough to watch her pick up her coffee mug from the counter, and watch her look at it for a second in her hand.

It was the mug she used every single morning without fail. A little chipped on the handle. Plain white. Nothing special about it at all.

But standing there, Kael realized he had watched her drink from it almost every morning for five years, and never once thought to ask why she liked it.

She set the mug back down on the counter.

She didn’t pack it, or even hesitate. She just placed it gently on the counter and walked toward the front door, as if it had never mattered at all.

He didn’t understand until later that this was the point: leaving it behind was not an accident. There are some things a person leaves on purpose, because taking them would mean carrying too much of the past with them.

A few minutes later she closed the door behind her, quietly. The house became so still that Kael could hear the refrigerator humming from two rooms away.

He stood in the kitchen for a long time after she left.

Eventually, he walked over and picked up the mug she left on the counter.

He didn’t know why he did so, there was no real reason. It was just a cheap mug, the kind you could buy a dozen of at any store. But he stood there turning it over in his hands, like it might tell him something if he looked at it long enough.

When he finally put it back down, he found he still couldn’t quite let go of the handle right away.

He left the mug on the counter. He didn’t wash it or throw it away. He just left it sitting there in the quiet kitchen, exactly where she had put it.

Across the city, Elara sat on the edge of a hotel bed. Her suitcase sat unopened by the door. The plant sat on the windowsill.

She sat very still for a while, her hands folded in her lap. Then, quietly, she let herself cry. Tears slid down her face before she wiped them away with the back of her hand.

“Now,” she said to the empty room. Her voice was steadier than she expected. “That’s the last time.”

She wiped her face, stood up, and walked over to where her laptop sat charging on the desk. She opened it, the screen glowed pale blue in the dim room. She opened a blank document.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a moment. Then she typed a title at the top of the page, plain and simple: Vale Capital — Business Plan

She stared at it for a long moment.

Then she started to write.

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 130 — Marcus Lets Go

Marcus sat near the back of the ballroom, watching Kael publicly acknowledge Elara’s contribution. After weeks of observing them, he understood exactly what he was witnessing. He'd seen the collaboration between Elara and Kael develop steadily throughout the crisis, and he had also noticed the growing ease and respect between them. But this public moment was different from anything Marcus had seen before. Kael had openly acknowledged Elara’s contributions in front of hundreds of people, showing genuine vulnerability without expecting anything in return or seeking recognition for himself. He watched Elara struggle to control her emotions as she listened to Kael’s words. Sitting among the crowd, he realized that something significant had changed between them. Whatever problems remained unresolved, Kael’s honest public acknowledgment had brought them closer in a way that private gestures alone might never have achieved. He didn’t feel bitter as he watched them. Instead, he felt a quiet b

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 129 — Full Transparency

The shareholder meeting filled the same large ballroom Sterling Group had used for previous significant announcements; hundreds of shareholders and industry observers gathered to hear the official resolution of the takeover crisis that had dominated industry news for the past several weeks.Kael stood near the front of the room, reviewing his prepared speech one last time; he understood the significance of what he was about to say publicly, the complete, unreserved acknowledgement he intended to offer, regardless of what people might think about his complicated past with Elara. He spotted her entering the room a few minutes before the formal program started. She looked composed and professional, as she took a seat several rows behind, clearly intending to observe the proceedings without drawing attention to herself. The chairman opened the meeting with a formal overview of the crisis. He described how Harrington had attempted to take over the company and how Sterling Group had fought

The final vote count came in late on Thursday afternoon. The general counsel arrived at Kael’s office with the news, looking relieved after weeks of hard work and uncertainty.“We did it!” he said, placing the final vote count on Kael’s desk. “Fifty-four percent voted against Harrington’s proposal. The takeover attempt has officially failed.”Kael stared at the number for a moment. After everything they had been through over the past several weeks, he could finally feel some of the tension leaving him. Relief slowly washed over him.“How many of those votes came from the undecided shareholders we convinced during our final round of outreach?” “Most of them,” the general counsel admitted. “To be honest, the strategy of using Elara’s public support to encourage the remaining undecided shareholders worked exactly as she predicted. Three major institutional investors directly mentioned her position as one of the reasons they decided to support our defense.”Kael absorbed that, fully unde

Kael noticed Elara's withdrawal within the first day: the sudden absence of direct communication, sessions routed entirely through Priya, and a cautious, deliberate distance that hadn't existed just days earlier. He understood exactly why. He was also struggling with the memory of their almost-kiss. They had come close to crossing a line neither of them had fully acknowledged, and his assistant’s urgent call had interrupted them at the last moment. At his next therapy session, he brought up the situation with Dr. Patel because he needed help figuring out how to handle it.“She’s completely pulled back,” he told Dr. Patel. “She’s sending everything through Priya and avoiding direct contact with me. I understand why, considering what almost happened, but I don’t know how to respond to it appropriately.""What's your instinct telling you to do?" Dr. Patel asked."Part of me wants to reach out directly," Kael admitted. "To talk through what happened, reassure her that nothing needs to cha

Elara woke up the next morning still troubled by what had almost happened the previous night. She couldn’t stop thinking about how close she had come to letting herself get carried away by the moment with Kael. The memory unsettled her more than she wanted to admit. She had another strategy meeting scheduled with Kael that afternoon. It was supposed to be a brief, focused session to finalize the remaining details before the vote. As she sat drinking her coffee that morning, she couldn’t shake the particular fear of facing him directly after what had almost happened. She called Priya instead of preparing for the meeting herself."Can you handle the session with Kael this afternoon?" she asked, keeping her voice carefully neutral. "I have some other matters I need to attend to."Priya hesitated slightly. "Is everything alright? You haven't missed any of these sessions in weeks.""I'm fine," Elara said, the deflection arriving too quickly to be quite convincing. "I just need to focus on

The meeting had continued well past midnight. Both of them were the only ones left in the conference room, as the rest of the defense team had gone home hours earlier. The vote was only a few days away, and the pressure to finalize every remaining detail weighed heavily on them both.Kael rubbed his eyes, feeling the exhaustion in his shoulders, and looked across the table at Elara. She looked just as tired as he was. The late hour and the stress of the past several weeks had softened her usual sharp, composed expression."I think this section is finally solid," she said, her voice tired but satisfied as she slid the revised document toward him.He took it and read through her final edits. As he did, he felt a warm sense of appreciation for the quality of her work. He had been quietly admiring her skills throughout their close collaboration over the past several weeks."This is exactly right," he said, setting the document down. "You've made this entire defense much stronger than it w
