Chapter 3

Autor: Drift
“What are you two doing?”

Christof suddenly emerged at the doorway.

I shuddered.

Before, I could never bear to be apart from him, at that moment, I could not avoid him fast enough.

How could I feel affection for a cold-hearted king who killed their entire family?

“A man and a woman alone in a room? Louisa, you even changed your clothes!”

Harald frowned.

“Your Highness, barging into my private chamber like this isn’t exactly proper, is it?”

“I—” Christof was speechless. “If I hadn’t come in, how would I know what you two were up to?”

Rage surged when I heard this. “It’s not like I belong to you. I can do whatever I want!”

Harald was stunned. He looked at me and then at Christof.

“No, no. We didn’t do anything. Don’t go saying stuff like that!”

[Haha. Why is he backing down like that?]

[He doesn’t want to ruin Louisa’s reputation, I guess. That’s so sweet, I’m so moved.]

Christof whipped his sleeve back in fury.

“Did you swallow the wrong medicine today? I’m done with you!”

After Christof left, I looked at Harald with teary eyes.

“At least you’re kind, Your Highness. Boohoo...”

[Louisa has changed for the better!]

[The sweet, spoiled girl deserves the best life. Harald, your good days are here!]

[Oh man, Christof will be jealous if he hears that]

Harald’s face instantly turned red. He looked away awkwardly.

“O-Of course. Who do you think I am?”

[What a scaredy-cat this man becomes when it comes to love.]

Three days later, the royal family held a hunt. The king was in high spirits. He even offered a jeweled hunting knife as a prize.

I searched through the eager young people and found Harald.

“You’re going the wrong way. Christof is over there.”

Harald nonchalantly pointed to the opposite side.

[Yeah, right. Look at him acting tough when he’s been holding on to that comb every day like a lovesick puppy!]

[He’s been bragging about those two jars of elderflower wine to everyone.]

[Harald, I swear, try saying something useful for once.]

“I’m not lost. Thanks for the handkerchief, Your Highness,” I said and smiled plainly as I handed the handkerchief back.

He took it and glanced toward Christof’s side with a frivolous smile.

“Ms. Sinclair, if you keep this act up, you’re not going to be able to explain yourself to Christof.”

He thought I had been using him to make Christof jealous.

Just as I was about to argue back, some young aristocrats from the other side started making snide remarks.

“Ooh, Ms. Sinclair. Your Christof is right here.

“Are you lost?”

The people around Christof have always made fun of my one-sided love for him. They would tease and mock me from time to time.

Christof had never once stopped them. He seemed to enjoy watching the spectacle involving me.

Something was different this time. He raised his head and looked directly at me. “Louisa, come over here.”

The people around him chimed in, “His Highness is calling you. Hurry up!”

I frowned and snapped in a low voice, “I’ll stand wherever I want. None of you gets to tell me otherwise.”

I turned to Harald and said with a smile, “Good luck winning first place, Your Highness.”

Harald froze for a moment before he broke into a bright, cocky smile.

“Thanks!”

[Harald, honey, I can only imagine the butterflies in your stomach right now!]

[You go, Harald! You’re about to have a wife!]

Christof glared at me with a dark gaze and then stormed off angrily.

Before leaving, he said harshly that as long as he was there, no one else would take first place.

I regretted my actions. I should not have been so showy.

The hunting ground was vast. There was no telling what might happen in such a place.

“That sour expression looks ugly on you.”

“Harald!”

I was being worried about him, but he insulted me instead.

He patted my head and said, “Relax. I’m not some pushover.”

[So he sneaks in a sweet moment and then bails? Man up!]

[No, he was blushing really hard. He’s afraid Louisa would catch on.]

I watched as he left. I could feel myself blushing, too.

Horses galloped at full speed. Arrows tore through the air. The hunt was fiercely intense.

Harald moved with grace and struck with speed. Every shot hit its target. Many people paid attention to him.

“Wow. I didn’t know Harald was this skilled.”

“Right? He’s actually on par with Prince Christof.”

“How come we never noticed it once?”

Even the king stared at Harald’s figure and seemed lost in thought.

[Of course. That’s because he didn’t care before.]

[Now it’s different. For his wife’s sake, of course, he’s going all out.]

The herald announced the tally.

“Prince Christof: twenty-four.

“Prince Harald: twenty-four.”

The crowd buzzed with discussion.

“He tied with Prince Christof. That’s impressive!”

The king nodded.

“Harald, you did well this time. However, I only have one jeweled hunting knife.”

Christof glanced smugly at Harald and then at me. He then said, “Father, you’ve always given me plenty. I’m happy to give this jeweled hunting knife to Harald.”

Upon hearing that, the king nodded approvingly. The people also showered Christof with praise. They called him gracious and noble.

Harald clicked his tongue scornfully, then walked over to the hunt and used his sword to lift open the dead tiger’s mouth.

“Look here!”

Christof was deposed. He was also sentenced to lifelong house arrest. After thinking long and hard, the king decided that Harald possessed the same mettle and majesty as he himself had in his youth. What was more, Harald was the son of his most beloved Queen Mary.Upon hearing that he was about to be appointed the heir to the throne, Harald shook his head vigorously to refuse. But after pondering, he said he needed time to think. I asked out of curiosity, “What’s there to think about? If you don’t want it, just don’t take it.”He cautiously asked, “Well, it just hit me. Didn’t my wife say once that she wanted to be a queen? What do you think, my love?”His words moved me. I chuckled and said, “What does it matter if I want it or not?”He scratched his head. “If you want it, I’ll go talk to Father again. If you don’t, I’ll take you traveling.”I tilted my head. “I don’t want it.”Harald was naturally carefree and romantic. Forcing him to be king would be like asking for his li

He was stunned as his eyes turned teary.“I never blamed you...”I looked at him and asked, “Harald, what if I never remember you at all?”I thought of the words that floated in the air. In some parallel dimension, he was a man of noble status who got exiled to the northern wastes with a miserable ending.“Then, I’ll just watch over you from the shadows.“Nothing else matters as long as you’re happy.”I began to sniffle as tears rolled down my cheeks.Soon after, two major events happened in quick succession at court. The first was that the king arranged a marriage between Harald and me.When my father found out, he kicked up a fuss and wanted to enter the palace to ask the king to take back the order. He said, “How could I ever let my baby girl marry some womanizing playboy?”However, after Harald sent over a large pile of gifts and personally came to talk with his future father-in-law all night long, my father’s prejudice disappeared. He even said genuinely, “Prince Har

When I was little, I had a secret base.Whenever I was punished by my tutor or had a fight with my father, I would always go there. One day, a little boy, dressed in expensive-looking clothing appeared inside the cave. His face was streaked with tears. He did not speak. He only squatted in the corner and played with my slingshot. That was rude.I scolded him, but he ignored me completely.I reluctantly decided to play with him.Even when the sky was getting dark, he showed no sign of leaving. “Aren’t you going home?”He shook his head.I laughed, thinking he must have caused trouble and was too afraid to go back.“Then I’ll let you stay in this cave for now. In here, no one can find you.”After that day, he kept showing up in my cave.As time went on, I learned that his mother had passed away. The other people in his family were not nice to him.So I puffed out my chest and said, “It’s okay. I’ve got your back.“I’m going to be a hero someday. I’ll protect everyone.”B

A few days later, some young aristocrats gathered at the outskirts of the capital to play croquet. Harald leaned against a tree and watched the commotion.“Your Highness, my ball is stuck in that bush. Can you help me get it?”When Harald saw me, he was surprised. He let out a cold snort.“Go find Christof.”How childish. Everyone knew that after the banquet that day, Christof had been urgently dispatched to Verdonne to manage the drought relief.“He’s not as good at fighting as you are.”Harald smiled subconsciously. “Now that’s the truth.”Sure enough, men just needed to be praised.Harald retrieved the ball. When he jumped out of the bushes, he lost his balance and fell. I took the chance to lean in close. He moved back an inch.I leaned in again. He moved back again. When he finally had his back against the tree trunk with nowhere left to retreat, his embarrassment turned into anger.“Ms. Sinclair, what are you doing?”[He’s blushing! He’s totally blushing!][Your

Christof uncharacteristically accompanied me back to the mansion.I looked at the maid beside him. “Your Highness. Did you switch your servant again? The servant lowered her head and said nothing. Christof looked indifferent. “Oh. The last one got sent home.”Strange. Why could none of Christof’s servants stay long?It seemed he did not like being waited on either.“Louisa. Your little act worked perfectly.”He interrupted my thoughts.“Huh?”He smirked and said, “You got close to Harald at the hunt just to make me jealous. Good. I’ll admit I am a bit jealous.”He stood there, looking confident and composed.I was stunned for a moment. Then, I burst out laughing.“Your Highness, don’t get the wrong idea.”I looked straight at him and said deliberately, “I just recently realized that my feelings for you were just some childhood wishful thinking. I no longer like you.“Prince Harald is not some tool to get your attention. Your Highness, you shouldn’t overthink things.”It t

The crowd was stunned. A prey animal was still in the tiger’s mouth. The herald stammered, “Prince Harald: tw-twenty-five…”Christof left the field with a sour expression. Everyone rushed to congratulate Harald. He, however, ignored the crowd and came to stand in front of me.“Heh. I won.”I smiled. “Congratulations.”He took another step closer. His eyes sparkled as he looked at me. I could feel his breath on my face. It tickled.“I won.”I tilted my head up. All I could see was that cocky, spirited young man.“I saw.”Realizing we were too close to each other, his face flushed. He averted his gaze from me.“What I’m trying to say is… you wanted me to win. So I won.”My heart pounded violently. The wind was howling across the hunting ground. But my whole world had shrunk down to just that one quiet, blushing boy.On the way back, Harald walked near me several times. But each time he walked away again.I could not figure him out.[Why is this kid so useless? Where did al
