Chapter 4

Autor: Drift
The crowd was stunned. A prey animal was still in the tiger’s mouth.

The herald stammered, “Prince Harald: tw-twenty-five…”

Christof left the field with a sour expression. Everyone rushed to congratulate Harald. He, however, ignored the crowd and came to stand in front of me.

“Heh. I won.”

I smiled. “Congratulations.”

He took another step closer. His eyes sparkled as he looked at me. I could feel his breath on my face. It tickled.

“I won.”

I tilted my head up. All I could see was that cocky, spirited young man.

“I saw.”

Realizing we were too close to each other, his face flushed. He averted his gaze from me.

“What I’m trying to say is… you wanted me to win. So I won.”

My heart pounded violently.

The wind was howling across the hunting ground. But my whole world had shrunk down to just that one quiet, blushing boy.

On the way back, Harald walked near me several times. But each time he walked away again.

I could not figure him out.

[Why is this kid so useless? Where did all that energy from the hunt go?]

[Tell Louisa you want to ask her out! You’re killing me here!]

I held back my laughter and deliberately teased him.

“So, since you came in first, don’t I get some of the credit? Aren’t you going to thank me?”

“Uh... A flash of surprise lit up Harald’s eyes. He turned away awkwardly.

“Um, well… I heard Langdon’s has new dishes. They’re actually pretty good...

[Aren’t you usually a smooth talker? Now you’re stammering?]

[Tell her you’re into her. Pin her against the wall!]

[Langdon’s cost a fortune. Harald is really splurging to win his girl over.]

I nodded, and just as I was about to agree, Christof’s low voice came from behind me.

“What are you guys talking about?”

Thus, the three of us ended up in the private room at Langdon’s and stared at each other with wide eyes.

[Ooh. Christof is getting jealous.]

[A face-off. I love watching this. Keep going.]

At the square table, Harald massaged the space between his eyebrows.

“What brings you here, Christof?”

Christof chuckled. “I’m just here to celebrate your achievement of the jeweled hunting knife. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

With that, he waved his hand generously and ordered every famous dish in the restaurant.

He even requested a live-band performance.

Christof was obviously showing off his wealth. Harald became agitated.

“Louisa. These grapes were brought in from the southern vineyards this morning. Try one.

“Louisa. This truffle was just unearthed at dawn. Here, taste it.”

Christof refused to be outdone.

“Louisa...”

“Louisa...”

In no time, my plate was piled as high as a small mountain.

I tasted one shrimp that Christof had peeled. He immediately became smug and looked at Harald provocatively.

I took a sip of the wine that Harald had poured. He also immediately snorted and used it to challenge Christof.

I let out a soft grunt.

[Sweetheart. You’re stuffed, aren’t you?]

[Is this really how princes compete for a girl? This is how they fight at the dinner table?]

I rubbed my stomach. I really could not eat anymore.

I looked up and saw Christof and Harald’s pitiful gazes.

“I chose this for you myself. Come on. Just one bite!”

Get lost!

Seeing that I was about to lose my temper, the two of them finally ended this childish farce.

“Louisa. See that harpist all the way on the right? She’s an old friend of Harald’s.”

Christof pointed toward a graceful girl in red beyond the partition.

I raised my head to take a look. Although I could not see her face clearly, I knew she must be a beauty.

I had always known Harald was a flirt. But I never expected to run into his lover.

“I’m not what you think!”

Harald saw my expression change and immediately tried to explain.

Just as the song ended, the harpist gracefully stepped forward.

“Your Highness, you once said my scent was unusual. So I made you a special sachet. Would you come with me to get it?”

Harald hesitated. It really looked like he wanted to go.

I sighed.

“You should just go with her. Thanks for the meal.”

I rose to take my leave. Harald’s face turned pale.

He looked at Christof, then at me, then at the harpist.

“Louisa, I...”

Ultimately, he was speechless.

I turned and left the dejected and powerless young man standing there alone.

[No, don’t go! That guy is actually just—]

Just what?

Christof was deposed. He was also sentenced to lifelong house arrest. After thinking long and hard, the king decided that Harald possessed the same mettle and majesty as he himself had in his youth. What was more, Harald was the son of his most beloved Queen Mary.Upon hearing that he was about to be appointed the heir to the throne, Harald shook his head vigorously to refuse. But after pondering, he said he needed time to think. I asked out of curiosity, “What’s there to think about? If you don’t want it, just don’t take it.”He cautiously asked, “Well, it just hit me. Didn’t my wife say once that she wanted to be a queen? What do you think, my love?”His words moved me. I chuckled and said, “What does it matter if I want it or not?”He scratched his head. “If you want it, I’ll go talk to Father again. If you don’t, I’ll take you traveling.”I tilted my head. “I don’t want it.”Harald was naturally carefree and romantic. Forcing him to be king would be like asking for his li

He was stunned as his eyes turned teary.“I never blamed you...”I looked at him and asked, “Harald, what if I never remember you at all?”I thought of the words that floated in the air. In some parallel dimension, he was a man of noble status who got exiled to the northern wastes with a miserable ending.“Then, I’ll just watch over you from the shadows.“Nothing else matters as long as you’re happy.”I began to sniffle as tears rolled down my cheeks.Soon after, two major events happened in quick succession at court. The first was that the king arranged a marriage between Harald and me.When my father found out, he kicked up a fuss and wanted to enter the palace to ask the king to take back the order. He said, “How could I ever let my baby girl marry some womanizing playboy?”However, after Harald sent over a large pile of gifts and personally came to talk with his future father-in-law all night long, my father’s prejudice disappeared. He even said genuinely, “Prince Har

When I was little, I had a secret base.Whenever I was punished by my tutor or had a fight with my father, I would always go there. One day, a little boy, dressed in expensive-looking clothing appeared inside the cave. His face was streaked with tears. He did not speak. He only squatted in the corner and played with my slingshot. That was rude.I scolded him, but he ignored me completely.I reluctantly decided to play with him.Even when the sky was getting dark, he showed no sign of leaving. “Aren’t you going home?”He shook his head.I laughed, thinking he must have caused trouble and was too afraid to go back.“Then I’ll let you stay in this cave for now. In here, no one can find you.”After that day, he kept showing up in my cave.As time went on, I learned that his mother had passed away. The other people in his family were not nice to him.So I puffed out my chest and said, “It’s okay. I’ve got your back.“I’m going to be a hero someday. I’ll protect everyone.”B

A few days later, some young aristocrats gathered at the outskirts of the capital to play croquet. Harald leaned against a tree and watched the commotion.“Your Highness, my ball is stuck in that bush. Can you help me get it?”When Harald saw me, he was surprised. He let out a cold snort.“Go find Christof.”How childish. Everyone knew that after the banquet that day, Christof had been urgently dispatched to Verdonne to manage the drought relief.“He’s not as good at fighting as you are.”Harald smiled subconsciously. “Now that’s the truth.”Sure enough, men just needed to be praised.Harald retrieved the ball. When he jumped out of the bushes, he lost his balance and fell. I took the chance to lean in close. He moved back an inch.I leaned in again. He moved back again. When he finally had his back against the tree trunk with nowhere left to retreat, his embarrassment turned into anger.“Ms. Sinclair, what are you doing?”[He’s blushing! He’s totally blushing!][Your

Christof uncharacteristically accompanied me back to the mansion.I looked at the maid beside him. “Your Highness. Did you switch your servant again? The servant lowered her head and said nothing. Christof looked indifferent. “Oh. The last one got sent home.”Strange. Why could none of Christof’s servants stay long?It seemed he did not like being waited on either.“Louisa. Your little act worked perfectly.”He interrupted my thoughts.“Huh?”He smirked and said, “You got close to Harald at the hunt just to make me jealous. Good. I’ll admit I am a bit jealous.”He stood there, looking confident and composed.I was stunned for a moment. Then, I burst out laughing.“Your Highness, don’t get the wrong idea.”I looked straight at him and said deliberately, “I just recently realized that my feelings for you were just some childhood wishful thinking. I no longer like you.“Prince Harald is not some tool to get your attention. Your Highness, you shouldn’t overthink things.”It t
