Chapter 1

I sat in the lobby of the hospital for over three hours when I was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer. I still hadn't figured out how to break the news to my wife, Rosalie Jackson, when I got a call from her.

"Free up some time in your schedule and come home, Nathan," she said. "He's coming back next month, so we need to get a divorce as soon as possible. I don't want to be still saddled with a bastard like you when he's back."

I tightened my grip on my phone. Rosalie and I just had a big fight a few days ago because I wanted a child and because her childhood sweetheart, Brandon Milton, was about to return to the country.

I was worried that she was going to leave me, so I made a suggestion. "We've been married for five years. Maybe it's time for us to have a child?"

"Who do you think you are?" she sneered, her voice dripping with disdain. "Do you really think that you deserve to have a child with me?"

Although I was a man, I nearly cried when I heard her words. My heart ached terribly, feeling as if someone had taken a knife and sliced away a part of it.

Right before Rosalie slammed the door open and stormed out of the room, she exclaimed, "Let's get a divorce, Nathan! This marriage was a mistake from the very beginning. It's time for us to set things right and return to our own paths."

She stopped coming home and contacting me after that day.

I looked down at the medical report in my hand. "Fine…" I muttered to myself.

…

Rosalie and a man in a suit were sitting in the living room when I returned home. Two documents lay out in front of them. They rose when they saw me.

Rosalie frowned when she laid her eyes on me, saying, "You're so young, and yet you just spend your days doing nothing. You'll probably be sleeping under a bridge and collecting trash for a living if you didn't have a rich father and me to take care of you."

I looked down at the slippers and loungewear that I was wearing. My abdomen had suddenly started aching terribly earlier in the morning. I didn't have enough time to change before the security guards rushed me to the hospital.

"Forget it. It won't be any of my business in the future anyway," Rosalie said, waving her hand dismissively. "He's a lawyer. He'll be the witness when we've decided on how to divide the assets. Take a look at the divorce papers. Hurry and raise any objections that you may have while he's here.

"I didn't take advantage of you during our five years of marriage. I'll be giving you more than half of the assets, so you'll be able to live comfortably for the rest of your life."

When the man offered the divorce agreements to me, I didn't even bother looking at the contents and just flipped to the last page. I then penned my signature on the dotted line.

"I agree to all the terms in the agreement no matter what they are," I said as I threw the documents at Rosalie.

Rosalie was briefly stunned. It was obvious that she hadn't expected me to agree to getting a divorce so easily. She shot a cautious look at me before flipping both divorce agreements to the last page. She discreetly sighed in relief when she confirmed that I had indeed signed both documents.

A bitter smile stretched across my lips as I took in her relieved expression. "We were in a marriage of convenience for five years. You must have felt extremely troubled when you were forced to remain by my side.

"Fortunately, it's not too late. You're still young. You can still live the life that you want. But a man like Brandon Milton doesn't deserve your devotion. I suggest that—"

"You don't deserve to talk about him," Rosalie said coldly, cutting me off before I could finish my sentence. "You used underhanded tactics to chase him away all those years ago. You have no right to talk about him when you made him suffer so much hardship when he was all alone in another country.

"Besides, you're just an outsider. You have no right to meddle in my relationship with him."

"You're right. Perhaps you'll only be able to let go when I'm dead," I said.

My eyes were hollow as I sighed quietly.

Rosalie's voice was as cold as ice when she said, "That's right. I can only let go of the past when you're dead. You make me sick whenever I look at you."

She picked up her bag from the couch and put one of the divorce agreements inside. "I'll see you at the courthouse at 11:00 am tomorrow. Don't act like a fool when the time comes."

I suddenly found it difficult to breathe, but I still nodded and said, "Got it."

Rosalie and I were in a marriage of convenience. But the truth was that I had been in love with her for many years before we got married. I had already secretly started loving her even before I truly understood my feelings.

Seven years ago, the Jackson family was facing a financial crisis and urgently needed a large amount of funds. Rosalie's father, Isaac Jackson, sought out Dad, hoping that Lowen Group would extend a helping hand to the Jacksons.

Dad agreed.

After Jackson Group survived the crisis, they no longer stubbornly tried to expand the company by themselves. Instead, they approached Lowen Group and suggested that they work together to strengthen their companies.

To comfort Rosalie, Mom and Dad gave her my medical report."I was wrong, Rosie," Mom said. "I shouldn't have taken my anger out on you two days ago. I can't blame you for Nate's death. He was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer."Rosalie's hands shook as she took the medical report. As her gaze landed on the date that was printed on the report, she stuttered, "It was that day… It actually happened on that day…"She buried her face in her hands and let out a loud wail.…Rosalie insisted on being discharged from the hospital after she finished her IV drips. She returned to our home, but I had already cleared out most of my belongings. She took the wedding album she had saved from the trash bin and hugged it to her chest."I'm sorry, honey. I was wrong. I was so wrong."But the only response she got came from the howling winds beyond the window. The next morning, Rosalie left the house, got into her car, and drove off. Instead of going to the company, she drove toward th

Rosalie stumbled back a couple of steps with a shocked and bewildered expression. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and started calling me. She was trembling slightly as she crossed her arms, repeating the same words over and over again. "Pick up… Pick up the phone now…"However, she received the same response every time. A mechanical voice said, "The number you have dialed is not in service."She navigated to her contacts list and dialed my best friend, Harry Pillon's number.Harry had no idea that Rosalie and I had filed for divorce. His voice was laced with pain when he answered, "My condolences, Rosalie.""Who's the one who died in the Lowen family?" Rosalie shrieked. "Who's the one who's dead?"Harry was briefly stunned on the other end of the line. "It's Nate. Shouldn't you know that?" he asked.Rosalie's phone slipped from her fingers and clattered to the floor. "He's… dead?"…My corpse had already been cremated by the time Rosalie made it to the funeral.I saw Mo

Although Rosalie had worn the ring for five years, it had only left an indent that would disappear in the next few days. She dragged the luggage bag along and turned her back on Brandon. Instead of answering his question, she said, "You can choose either one of the guest bedrooms. I don't think you'll want to stay in the master bedroom or the study since he used to stay there."Brandon's gaze slowly turned cold as he stared at her back.…Rosalie accompanied Brandon for the next two days. On the first day, she bought all sorts of different clothes for him to welcome him back to the country. On the second day, she found an apartment that was near Jackson Group for him to move into.On the third day, she took him to the company and explained its main business operations and his responsibilities. She would give him two days to prepare himself before officially announcing him as the director of the business department to her employees next week.Rosalie checked the date when the aft

Rosalie grabbed her phone and tapped our chat while waiting at another red light. The last message was sent two weeks ago on the eve of Thanksgiving."I've bought the Thanksgiving presents for Mom and Dad, honey," I said. "I'm sure that they'll love them. I'm coming home now to pick you up.""No need. I know how to go back to my own home," was Rosalie's response. She always treated me so coldly.Rosalie navigated to my social media account next. However, there was nothing on my feed.…Rosalie didn't get out of the car right away after parking in the airport lot. Instead, she sat there and stared off into the distance, as if in a daze. A long time passed before she finally let out a deep sigh and got out of the car.I floated some distance behind her. I couldn't figure out why she was in such low spirits. She was about to reunite with her first love soon. Shouldn't she be over the moon?I tried my best to float away when I thought about her meeting Brandon soon. It was a little

I looked at my body, which was covered in tubes as I floated in midair, feeling incredibly strange. I wanted to hug Mom and Dad, but I gave up when I remembered how I would always develop a fever and feel dizzy for several days as a child whenever I accidentally made contact with the paranormal while we cleaned Grandpa's and Grandma's graves. My soul floated here and there. I had no idea where I was supposed to go. I remembered that in the TV shows that I used to watch, someone would come along and take me away. I was mulling over my thoughts when I felt a force tug at my soul, dragging me toward my original home—the place where Rosalie and I had lived together for the past five years. Why would I return to this place? Had my thoughts of it run too deep?I heard movement coming from the master bedroom. I floated toward it to take a look and was surprised to see Rosalie. She was packing her belongings. Many items were laid out on the bed, including her clothes, her bags, her jewe

If I put myself in Rosalie's shoes, perhaps our marriage was a mistake from the very beginning. The Jackson family was in a precarious position five years ago. From a businessman's perspective, nothing was more stable than a marriage between their children, creating an entity of shared interests.Rosalie didn't agree with the arrangement, but she couldn't speak up in front of her parents. That was why she begged me, hoping that I would step forward and reject the arrangement instead. She had cried her heart out that day, telling me that she already had someone she loved. She said that she didn't want to become a sacrificial lamb in her parents' pursuit of glory, explaining that they wouldn't listen to her. However, I was different. I was the Lowen family's only son.
