Chapter 1

"Charged with kidnapping resulting in the death of Eric Thomas and remaining at the scene afterward."

In the courtroom, the prosecutor closed the case file and displayed the crime-scene photographs on the large screen.

In an abandoned chemical plant, my son Eric was tied to a rusted iron post.

A coarse nylon rope was pulled tight around his neck. His face was blue.

Nicholas sat slumped a few feet from the body with blood all over his hands and a bloody knife still gripped in one of them.

The scene was horrifying.

Alex took one look, clutched at his chest, and let out a cry of pure despair.

"Your Honor, I don't want compensation. I want him sentenced to death!"

"My son was 22. He was supposed to graduate next month! His life had only just begun!"

In the gallery, the cries of friends and family blended into one.

Emma Wood, my son's girlfriend, pointed at Nicholas in the dock and screamed herself hoarse.

"You destroyed a family for money! People like you belong in hell!"

Nicholas stood in the dock in his prison uniform, his head bowed the entire time.

He did not defend himself. He only bit down hard on his lip, his eyes dull with despair.

When it was my turn to speak, every camera and every eye turned toward me.

I rose from my seat and faced the bench.

"On behalf of the family, I'm withdrawing our request for the maximum penalty and waiving every civil claim against the defendant. I have also hired a lawyer to plead not guilty on Nicholas's behalf."

The courtroom went dead silent.

Alex's head snapped around, his bloodshot eyes wide with disbelief. "What did you say?"

The judge struck the gavel. "The deceased was your son. Are you certain you want to support the man accused of killing him?"

"I am certain. My son is dead. Nicholas is barely into his twenties. I don't want to destroy another young man."

Emma rushed at me and grabbed my arm across the rail.

"And Eric's life? Did he deserve to die?"

I raised my eyes to my son's photograph on the screen.

In it, Eric wore a custom-tailored suit and flashed a bright smile, like an angel.

"He went to an abandoned chemical plant in the middle of the night and put himself in danger. He brought this on himself."

Alex staggered forward and stared at me across the rail, tears streaming down his face.

"Olivia, you carried Eric for nine months! Every year he bought you a birthday present with money he earned himself, and when he found out you had migraines, he even learned how to massage you. How could you say that?"

Emma immediately held up a tablet for everyone to see.

On the screen, one clip showed my son massaging my temples; another showed him preparing healthy meals for me.

I looked away.

"I'm his mother. Looking after me was only right. Small kindnesses like that don't make up for the trouble he caused."

Ultimately, my request for leniency, along with the efforts of the top lawyer I had hired to challenge gaps in the chain of evidence, persuaded the judge to postpone a final ruling and grant Nicholas bail.

When the ruling came down, Alex collapsed into his chair as though all the strength had left his body.

He clutched Eric's things and murmured the same words over and over.

"Eric, I failed you. I couldn't get justice for you."

In the gallery, several older business partners of the Thomas family stood and accused me of being cold-blooded.

They said Eric had donated $500,000 to an impoverished town only days before and that such a kind young man didn't deserve to be condemned by his own mother after his death.

I pushed away the tissues they held out.

"He donated the money to look good. If you think so highly of him, go join him in hell. Don't mourn him here."

They used Eric's phone to message Nicholas and tell him to come to the plant for his money. Then Alex wrapped the nylon rope around Eric's neck, making it look like he had been strangled.Eric had neither killed himself nor been kidnapped by Nicholas. His own father had smashed the back of his skull with an ashtray, then tightened a rope around his corpse and left him in the abandoned chemical plant. The moment the recording was released, social media fell silent.Alex was still struggling wildly when officers arrested him, pointing at me and screaming obscenities."Olivia! You forced me into it! If you hadn't insisted on going to the police, why would I ever have killed him! You vicious woman, you've destroyed this family!"I looked at him coldly across the cordon."Alex, I didn't force you to kill him. You killed him because if he turned himself in, he would have exposed the evidence that you had used him to launder money and embezzle company funds. The only person you have ever love

This time, no one came forward to help me straighten up.Nor did I deserve their help.Spit and wads of paper struck me from every direction. There had been a time when I handed out charity from a place of privilege.I had mistaken complicity for mercy.Alex announced on the spot that two Thomas Group subsidiaries would be sold at below-market prices to fund compensation for the victims. He cried until he nearly collapsed, and it won him a good deal of sympathy in the press."Mrs. Thomas is a victim, too. Who could have imagined her own son was a monster?"Emma came forward to testify that Eric had hidden it from everyone, even from her, his own fiancée."Eric threatened me. He said that if I ever looked into where he went, he would kill my whole family. Alex knew nothing. He's too kind."She even released a video of Eric smashing things in a rage as proof that he had subjected her to long-term psychological abuse.Public opinion began to shift again.People began saying Eric was simpl

With his mother gravely ill and urgently needing money for surgery, Nicholas had borrowed from illegal loan sharks.Emma selected him and told him that if he went to the chemical plant and played a little game, he would receive $200,000.Nicholas went. What he found was not a game. It was Eric's body. The police arrived moments later. It had all been a carefully planned trap. After I leaked a carefully worded hint about the truth to the media, public opinion reversed overnight. The people who had wept for Eric began digging frantically into his past.Angry crowds splashed red paint over his headstone and scrawled "Monster" and "He Got What He Deserved" across it.Emma burst into my office, her exquisitely made-up face twisted with rage."Olivia, have you lost your mind? If you release this, Eric will be ruined forever, and so will you!"I sat in the wide leather chair and looked at her coldly."Why should anyone cover up what he did?""So you can watch thousands of people spit on his g

Back at the house, I went down to the vault in the basement.I opened the encrypted drive I had bought for a fortune on the black market. It contained ten chilling videos. The first was filmed three years ago.A homeless man was tied to a chair.Eric sat across from him with a glass of red wine in his hand and an elegant smile."Left hand or right hand?"The man cried and begged.Eric sighed and waved a hand. The bodyguard beside him stepped forward and smashed the homeless man's right hand with a hammer.Afterward, the homeless man received $100,000 in "hush money" and was sent back to his hometown. At the time, Alex told me that Eric had accidentally hit someone with his car and that settling the matter privately was the only way to avoid a criminal record.I believed it. I even helped Alex pull strings and keep it out of the news.I thought I was protecting a child who had made a mistake. It happened nine more times after that. Each victim was marginalized and had no one to protect

The prosecutor was stunned and then his face darkened."Ma'am, do not obstruct justice! Nicholas's fingerprints were on the weapon at the scene, the ligature marks on the victim's neck matched the rope he was holding, and Nicholas himself confessed. Now you're claiming he didn't kill Eric?""The rope was around Eric's neck. That much is true."I drew a breath and laid the photographs from my folder out in a row."But he was already dead before that."What I handed over was a deliberately suppressed request for an independent forensic examination.I requested tissue samples from deep within the victim's neck and a new determination of the time of death.I built my company on medical devices. I know the best forensic specialists in the field. The day they wheeled Eric's body out, one look was enough for me to tell that something was wrong. The ligature mark from the nylon rope was deep, but there was very little subcutaneous bleeding and no clear sign that he had struggled.More importan

Nicholas broke down in front of me, his lips trembling. "That was his house. I can't accept it."I steadied him and pressed the deed into his hands."Take this house, and don't feel guilty about it."When the news broke, Alex lost his temper with me for the first time.He smashed an entire tea set and seized my wrist."Are you determined to give everything Eric owned to this killer?"I looked at him coldly."Everything Eric owned is mine now. I'll give it to whoever I please."Claiming I was mentally incompetent, Alex asked the court to issue an injunction preventing me from disposing of my personal property. On the day of the hearing, every relative testified that I had doted on my son since birth and could never have done any of this in my right mind.Emma produced Eric's diary. The day before it happened, he had written that I had agreed to come to his graduation, and that he had had an outfit made to match mine as a surprise.Alex's eyes were red as he said, "Olivia, I don't want y
