Chapter 3

Penulis: Delicious Ice Cream
I arrived right on time and pushed open the door to the private dining room the Scott family had reserved.

I had done a full face of makeup and had on a brand-new red dress. I walked in feeling fully confident.

Harry, on the other hand, was sitting at the table in a pair of old canvas shoes he'd apparently dug out from somewhere because he no longer had his left-sided dress shoes.

Paired with his designer suit, the look was absolutely ridiculous.

Besides Harry and his mother, Evelyn Baker was there too. She sat beside him with tear-filled eyes.

"Olivia, you're here. Have a seat." My future mother-in-law, Caryn Scott, glanced at me. Her tone carried a clear warning. "Couples are bound to have disagreements. That's just how marriage works.

"Evelyn has no one to rely on, so what's wrong with Harry taking care of her? As his fiancée, you need to be more open-minded. You should treat Evelyn like your own little sister."

Evelyn immediately lowered her head and spoke timidly, "Olivia, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have called Harry when my cat went missing. Please don't blame him."

Seeing that both his mother and Evelyn were on his side, Harry instantly became more confident. "Olivia, apologize in front of everyone. Return the things you took, and we'll consider this matter over."

I ignored them. I pulled out a chair, sat down, and picked up my fork. I then reached for a piece of grilled fish and ate it. It was delicious.

After finishing that bite, I calmly pulled three printed sheets from my bag and placed them in front of Evelyn.

"What's this?" Evelyn asked in surprise.

"Harry Scott Daily Care Handover Checklist." I picked up a napkin and wiped the corner of my mouth before smiling sweetly at her.

"Since you can't live without him and need him to provide emotional support twenty-four hours a day, I'm officially handing him over to you tonight."

Harry froze. "Olivia, what the hell are you doing?"

"Quiet. The handover isn't finished yet." I pointed at the checklist and began explaining it to Evelyn.

"First, he snores and grinds his teeth in his sleep. Second, he likes stuffing his dirty socks into the cracks of the couch. Third, whenever he starts gaming, he forgets that anyone else exists.

"I've listed everything in detail. You'd better memorize it."

Caryn's expression turned livid. "Olivia! Do you have any idea what you're saying in front of us?"

"Caryn, I'm doing charity work. I'm making their beautiful love story possible." I turned to look at Evelyn and held out my hand. "Evelyn, the handover is complete. Please settle the bill."

Evelyn's face turned pale. "W-What bill?"

"I spent three years taking care of him. You can think of me as a high-end full-time nanny. Look, I'll give you a discounted rate. Thirty grand." I tapped on the table.

"You're taking over this manchild, so you should at least pay for my severance. Installment payments are fine, but interest applies," I added.

"Olivia, you're completely unreasonable!" Harry shot to his feet. His finger trembled as he pointed at me.

"If you think it's too expensive, then wash your own socks," I uttered.

I couldn't be bothered to look at their miserable expressions anymore. I waved to the waiter. "Excuse me. Could you pack up this untouched lobster for me?"

The waiter quickly packed the lobster and handed me the box. I picked it up and waved at the Scott family, whose faces had gone pale from fury.

"Take your time paying the bill. Don't expect me to return the shoes, and remember to transfer the fee to my Venmo account.

"I'm leaving. The lobster won't taste as good once it gets cold."

With that, I walked out of the private dining room and left them staring after me in stunned silence.

Three months later, using the money from pawning the engagement ring and collecting all my various 'emotional damages fees,' I took over a new storefront downtown. Business was booming. One Friday evening, a heavy rainstorm rolled in.Ian pulled up outside my office building to pick me up from work. The moment I got in from the passenger side, he handed me a warm cup of coffee."Ms. Lawson, our quarterly financials just came in. Profit doubled." Ian started the car and smiled playfully. "Let's celebrate. What would you like to have for dinner?" "It has to be a steakhouse. I want a double serving of juicy pork meat. I put the straw through the lid and took a huge sip.The car smoothly merged onto the main road. At the next traffic light, we came to a stop. The windshield wipers moved furiously back and forth. I casually turned to look out the window. My gaze landed on the entrance of a discount supermarket by the roadside. There were two people beneath the awning. They were argu

Late at night on the weekend, I was curled up on the couch watching stand-up comedy when a dull thud suddenly came from outside my door. Then came broken, intermittent sobbing.I walked to the entryway and opened the door. A strong scent of alcohol immediately hit me.Harry collapsed on my doormat without a care for his reputation. He was holding a single black right dress shoe to his chest. It was one of the pieces from his half of things I had left behind when I divided up our belongings. The moment he saw me, he jerked his head up. Hope flickered in his bloodshot eyes."Olivia, I knew you'd open the door–"He tried to stand, but his knees buckled, and he dropped back down."Olivia, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong." Harry hugged the single shoe tightly while tears and snot ran down his face."These past few days have been driving me insane. Evelyn sits in that wheelchair all day and gets angry at me about everything."She says I push the wheelchair wrong. She says the

One Friday night, I had just put on a face mask when the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, Evelyn was standing outside with tear-filled eyes. She leaned weakly against the doorframe while her right foot hovered off the ground."Olivia–" She burst into tears immediately. "I twisted my ankle. I called Harry, but he didn't answer. I know all he can think about lately is you."I came here today to make my position clear. I'll give Harry back to you. Please stop tormenting him."If Harry had been there to see her noble act of self-sacrifice, he probably would've felt sorry for her.Unfortunately for her, I was the one standing there.Instead of mocking her, I grabbed her hand enthusiastically. "No, no, absolutely not!"I stared at her in horror. "You have to hold on to this piece of garbage! If you return him now, I'll charge you a massive depreciation fee and additional charges for emotional distress!"All the sweet words Evelyn had prepared went down the drain. She stared at

At three in the afternoon, I was at the office reviewing financial reports when a piercing blast from a loudspeaker suddenly came from downstairs."Olivia! I was wrong! Please forgive me!"The voice carried so well that everyone in the office stopped typing and turned toward the windows at the same time.I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down.In the plaza outside our office building, Harry stood in the center of a giant heart made from 999 red roses. He was wearing a perfectly tailored suit. It looked new, which made sense, considering I still had the left shoe from every pair of his old dress shoes. He held a megaphone in one hand and shouted with all the emotion he could muster.A crowd quickly gathered around him, and several people had already pulled out their phones to record the whole thing."Olivia, I've thought everything through these past few days! I can't live without you! Evelyn is in the past. You're the woman I want to marry! Please give me

At the food vendor's stall, the smell of cumin and grilled lamb filled the air.I bit into the last piece of lamb on my skewer, picked up my ice-cold beer, and clinked bottles with Ian across the table."How's the battle on the island going? I hope nobody died." Ian leisurely peeled a small crawfish. His eyes glistened with amusement.I was just about to retrieve my phone and check the line-dancing videos David had been sending me when I heard a hoarse voice from behind me. It almost sounded like the person was crying."Olivia–"I turned around. For a moment, I barely recognized the person standing in front of me.Harry was wearing a wrinkled shirt. His carefully styled hair had turned into something resembling a pile of dried grass. His face and neck were covered in red, peeling patches from the island's brutal sun.His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles hung beneath them, and he looked like a refugee who had just escaped from a survival show."Well, well. If it isn't Mr. Scott

The air conditioning in the VIP lounge for the flight was on full blast.I walked in empty-handed and immediately spotted Harry and Evelyn sitting side by side on a couch.Harry was in a linen shirt while Evelyn had on an absurdly oversized straw hat. There were two huge suitcases in front of them. When Harry saw me, his eyes lit up for a second. He immediately put on his usual arrogant expression."I thought you were going to keep playing tough." He looked me up and down, and his eyes settled on my completely empty hands. He smiled smugly and added, "You even came to the airport without luggage. What, are you in such a hurry to apologize? Olivia, I told you. As long as you admit you were wrong, the ticket is still yours."Evelyn softly chimed in. "Olivia, I'm so glad you came. Harry's been talking about you non-stop these past few days. I was worried you'd be upset with me and miss such an expensive trip."Watching the two of them sing the same tune, I couldn't help but laugh.
