Chapter 2

Author: Delicious Ice Cream
The next morning, Harry put on his suit and got ready for work.

Before leaving, he stopped by the entryway and looked down at me as I drank my milk.

"I have a lot of meetings today. I don't have time to coddle you. Stay home and reflect on your attitude last night. I'll let the gaming console thing slide, but you have to get the ring back."

He paused before softening his tone slightly. "Evelyn's doing better now. If you apologize, we can get registered next week."

I took a long sip of milk before replying. "The door's right there. Have a nice day."

Harry scoffed and slammed the door behind him.

The moment it shut, I put down my milk and called a local moving company.

Thirty minutes later, four burly movers showed up in my living room with boxes.

"Ma'am, do you want us to clear everything out?" the foreman asked.

"No. We're going to be completely fair. Only half of everything." I pulled out a marker and started drawing circles around things throughout the apartment.

We had both contributed half the rent for the place, and we'd also split the cost of the furniture and appliances. If we were going our separate ways, then we were going to settle the scores properly.

"This router is mine. Leave the network cable for him.

"Take the TV. Leave him the remote so he has something to remember it by.

"I'll take the AC remote. Leave the AC itself."

The movers exchanged glances, but they were professionals who had been paid to do a job, so they quickly got to work.

I walked into the closet and looked at Harry's entire wall of designer sneakers and limited-edition dress shoes. I smiled.

"Guys, do me a favor. Pack up every left shoe on this wall."

"The left shoes? What about the right ones?" The foreman looked baffled.

"Leave those. He likes one-sided relationships, so I'm giving him the full experience."

Less than two hours later, our once cozy, crowded apartment looked like it had been stripped bare.

Everything that belonged to me had been moved into the studio apartment I'd just rented.

At eight that evening, my phone started vibrating nonstop. Harry's calls came one after another.

I leisurely answered and put him on speaker.

"Olivia! What the hell did you do?" Harry's furious roar blasted through the phone. "Where are my shoes? Why do I only have right-sided shoes?

"Fine, I'll let the router thing go, but why did you take the AC remote? Are you trying to roast me alive in the middle of summer?"

I applied the top coat to my freshly done manicure while I spoke. "We paid for everything fifty-fifty. So when we split up, everything gets divided fifty-fifty. A pair of shoes has two shoes. I took the left one. It's completely fair.

"As for the AC remote, I paid half for it, so I chose the remote as my half. You can replace the AC or have Evelyn physically cool you down."

"You're insane! Who divides their belongings like this?" Harry was furious. "Bring my stuff back! Right now!"

"Sure. The delivery fee is twenty bucks. Wear-and-tear will cost fifty. The fee for coming over to teach you how to wear a right-sided shoe is a hundred. The total will be 170 bucks. Are you paying by cash or an online transfer?"

I heard heavy, ragged breathing from the other end of the call. It was followed by something being smashed onto the ground.

"Olivia, don't push it. My family is hosting a dinner tomorrow night. My mom specifically told you to dress properly and come over. You'd better bring my shoes, or you're the one who'll be embarrassed in front of everyone!"

"A family dinner?" I gently blew on my nails. "Sure. I'll be there on time, and I'll definitely dress appropriately."

Three months later, using the money from pawning the engagement ring and collecting all my various 'emotional damages fees,' I took over a new storefront downtown. Business was booming. One Friday evening, a heavy rainstorm rolled in.Ian pulled up outside my office building to pick me up from work. The moment I got in from the passenger side, he handed me a warm cup of coffee."Ms. Lawson, our quarterly financials just came in. Profit doubled." Ian started the car and smiled playfully. "Let's celebrate. What would you like to have for dinner?" "It has to be a steakhouse. I want a double serving of juicy pork meat. I put the straw through the lid and took a huge sip.The car smoothly merged onto the main road. At the next traffic light, we came to a stop. The windshield wipers moved furiously back and forth. I casually turned to look out the window. My gaze landed on the entrance of a discount supermarket by the roadside. There were two people beneath the awning. They were argu

Late at night on the weekend, I was curled up on the couch watching stand-up comedy when a dull thud suddenly came from outside my door. Then came broken, intermittent sobbing.I walked to the entryway and opened the door. A strong scent of alcohol immediately hit me.Harry collapsed on my doormat without a care for his reputation. He was holding a single black right dress shoe to his chest. It was one of the pieces from his half of things I had left behind when I divided up our belongings. The moment he saw me, he jerked his head up. Hope flickered in his bloodshot eyes."Olivia, I knew you'd open the door–"He tried to stand, but his knees buckled, and he dropped back down."Olivia, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong." Harry hugged the single shoe tightly while tears and snot ran down his face."These past few days have been driving me insane. Evelyn sits in that wheelchair all day and gets angry at me about everything."She says I push the wheelchair wrong. She says the

One Friday night, I had just put on a face mask when the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, Evelyn was standing outside with tear-filled eyes. She leaned weakly against the doorframe while her right foot hovered off the ground."Olivia–" She burst into tears immediately. "I twisted my ankle. I called Harry, but he didn't answer. I know all he can think about lately is you."I came here today to make my position clear. I'll give Harry back to you. Please stop tormenting him."If Harry had been there to see her noble act of self-sacrifice, he probably would've felt sorry for her.Unfortunately for her, I was the one standing there.Instead of mocking her, I grabbed her hand enthusiastically. "No, no, absolutely not!"I stared at her in horror. "You have to hold on to this piece of garbage! If you return him now, I'll charge you a massive depreciation fee and additional charges for emotional distress!"All the sweet words Evelyn had prepared went down the drain. She stared at

At three in the afternoon, I was at the office reviewing financial reports when a piercing blast from a loudspeaker suddenly came from downstairs."Olivia! I was wrong! Please forgive me!"The voice carried so well that everyone in the office stopped typing and turned toward the windows at the same time.I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down.In the plaza outside our office building, Harry stood in the center of a giant heart made from 999 red roses. He was wearing a perfectly tailored suit. It looked new, which made sense, considering I still had the left shoe from every pair of his old dress shoes. He held a megaphone in one hand and shouted with all the emotion he could muster.A crowd quickly gathered around him, and several people had already pulled out their phones to record the whole thing."Olivia, I've thought everything through these past few days! I can't live without you! Evelyn is in the past. You're the woman I want to marry! Please give me

At the food vendor's stall, the smell of cumin and grilled lamb filled the air.I bit into the last piece of lamb on my skewer, picked up my ice-cold beer, and clinked bottles with Ian across the table."How's the battle on the island going? I hope nobody died." Ian leisurely peeled a small crawfish. His eyes glistened with amusement.I was just about to retrieve my phone and check the line-dancing videos David had been sending me when I heard a hoarse voice from behind me. It almost sounded like the person was crying."Olivia–"I turned around. For a moment, I barely recognized the person standing in front of me.Harry was wearing a wrinkled shirt. His carefully styled hair had turned into something resembling a pile of dried grass. His face and neck were covered in red, peeling patches from the island's brutal sun.His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles hung beneath them, and he looked like a refugee who had just escaped from a survival show."Well, well. If it isn't Mr. Scott

The air conditioning in the VIP lounge for the flight was on full blast.I walked in empty-handed and immediately spotted Harry and Evelyn sitting side by side on a couch.Harry was in a linen shirt while Evelyn had on an absurdly oversized straw hat. There were two huge suitcases in front of them. When Harry saw me, his eyes lit up for a second. He immediately put on his usual arrogant expression."I thought you were going to keep playing tough." He looked me up and down, and his eyes settled on my completely empty hands. He smiled smugly and added, "You even came to the airport without luggage. What, are you in such a hurry to apologize? Olivia, I told you. As long as you admit you were wrong, the ticket is still yours."Evelyn softly chimed in. "Olivia, I'm so glad you came. Harry's been talking about you non-stop these past few days. I was worried you'd be upset with me and miss such an expensive trip."Watching the two of them sing the same tune, I couldn't help but laugh.
