Chapter 2

Author: Mila Sugar
The café.

Layla couldn’t believe she actually came. She felt insane for even showing up. But when she spotted the man sitting inside, she wondered if the whole world had lost its mind along with her.

Lucas Moore, the man who all but controlled Rivergate’s economy. The financial magazines’ golden boy. Five years straight as the man women most wanted to marry. The president of Moore Group. And he might be the father of her baby?

Lucas looked much calmer than she felt. His first sentence was brutal.

“We’ve never slept together, Miss Spencer, so there’s no need to look so terrified.”

Layla’s face went numb.

“Mr. Moore, why did you ask me to come here?”

Lucas slid a hospital-stamped envelope across the table while holding it in place with his fingers.

“Your husband, Dylan Hall, has been cheating on you with your stepsister, Lily Spencer. A month ago, they planned to implant their embryo into your uterus so you would carry their baby for them.”

“It was the doctor’s mistake that led to my fertilized embryo being put into your body instead.”

Layla flipped through the documents. Even knowing she hadn’t been used as a surrogate by those two, she didn’t feel any better. She took a long breath until her expression relaxed.

“Mr. Moore, let’s stop dancing around it. What do you actually want?”

Something faint and almost imperceptible flickered in his eyes, a touch of admiration.

“I’m guessing you’ll divorce your husband after what he did. And I happen to need a child and a wife to reassure my grandmother.

“If you agree to be my contract wife and carry my child, I’ll invest one hundred million to save the Spencer Group and help you make a comeback.”

Layla let out a short, dry laugh with a hint of mockery. “You men are unbelievable. Marry you? That’s absolutely not—”

“Miss Spencer,” Lucas cut in, his voice low and firm. His fingers tapped lightly on the table. “Before you decide, think about whether courage alone can protect you from everything you stand to lose.”

He was right. She was surrounded on all sides. If she lost anything more, she wasn’t sure she could survive it.

Layla shut her eyes for a moment and ran through everything in her head. When she opened them, she had made her choice.

“One month from now, we register the marriage.”

“No problem.”

He sounded like he had known she would say yes.

“One month later at City Hall. I’ll see you there, my fiancée.”

The words were calm, but Layla caught an unexpected hint of warmth. She didn’t dwell on it. She stood and left without looking back.

She never noticed the way Lucas’s gaze lingered on her.

Layla moved fast. She prepared the divorce papers, the resignation letter, and gathered a stack of other documents. Then she knocked on Dylan’s office door.

The moment she pushed it open, she saw Dylan practically shove Lily away. His suit pants were unzipped.

“What makes you think you can barge in like this? Don’t forget this is a workplace. There are rules.”

Layla ignored the irritation in his voice. With both of them staring at her, she walked straight to the desk and dropped the documents in front of him.

“Urgent files. You need to sign them before anything else can move forward.”

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Lily adjusting her clothes, deliberately tilting her neck so the red marks showed. She smirked, taunting.

These two were unbelievable. With how hard they had been going at it, it was a miracle neither of them had passed out.

Dylan was just about to flip through the documents when Layla let her gaze drift between him and Lily.

“I didn’t notice earlier. What’s my sister doing here?”

Her question made Dylan’s hand freeze for a split second. Almost as if he needed to cover something up, he grabbed a pen and signed every page without even reading them.

“Lily said she’s been having nightmares lately. I’ve been doing therapy for a while, so I know a little about that stuff. I was just talking her through it.”

Before he even finished the sentence, he had already signed everything.

Layla’s chest tightened with a bitter laugh she didn’t let show. She gathered the documents calmly.

“Then you two can continue. I have work to do.”

Back in college, she used to help Dylan with everything. He was the student council president, and she planned events, wrote proposals, handled reports.

Now at the company, she had become the employee everyone called the most capable and reliable. As his chief secretary, she prepared all his paperwork. Normally, he skimmed the pages before signing.

But today, he didn’t even glance at them.

The resignation of the chief secretary needed his signature.

The divorce papers also needed his signature.

Layla looked down at both signed documents, her chest tight with a mix of emotions.

Everything she had done for him might as well have been tossed to the dogs.

She went straight to Human Resources to submit her resignation, along with her official notice.

The department head was stunned, but once he saw Dylan’s signature, every question died on his tongue.

“Miss Spencer, we’ll start recruiting for a new chief secretary. Until then, we’ll still need your help.”

“I can finish the handover within a month. If you can’t find someone suitable, choose from within the company.”

Layla shook her head. She knew exactly who in the company was capable enough for this job, and the list was very short.

When she returned to her desk, she let out a long breath. Free from the toxic mess of her marriage, she suddenly felt lighter.

She had just turned on her computer when a message popped up.

It was an address.

“Hey, Fiancée. Stay here. You’re pregnant and need someone to look after you.”

“I’ll meet you in a month.”

A month. The exact day the divorce cooling-off period would end.

This marriage was over.

Compared to Dylan’s anger, Layla’s tone was almost icy.He had spent years grinding her feelings down, little by little. At this point, nothing he said could stir even the smallest reaction in her.“Did you not understand me the first time? I want my phone back. What part of that is confusing?”“You…”It was as if someone had dumped a bucket of cold water over his head. His fury sputtered out, leaving only smoke and confusion swirling in his eyes.“Layla, what on earth is going on with you?”In his mind, everything that happened was her own fault. He had simply reacted the way any man in his position should have.He never felt he had gone too far.So why was she suddenly acting like a completely different person?“I know what this is about,” Dylan said. “You are mad that I locked you in the bathroom last night, aren’t you?“I swear, you are getting more and more unreasonable. Why did I lock you in there? You really don’t know? You laid hands on Lily first. If you hadn’t acted

After she was brought back to the Spencer family, Layla had always lived like she was borrowing space in someone else’s home.Later, when she got together with Dylan, she let him cross every boundary she had. She had gotten so used to doing everything alone that she could barely remember what it felt like to have someone in her corner. It was not until she met Lucas that she finally understood what it meant to be cared for.Back when Alya Corp was first founded, almost no one took her seriously. People knew she was Dylan Hall’s girlfriend and looked at her with open disdain. Everyone thought she was just a girl relying on a man’s success, waiting for her boyfriend to make it big so she could swoop in and enjoy the benefits. She fought tooth and nail to shake off that label. She worked through countless nights, pushed through endless resistance, and built her reputation from nothing. Now she had suddenly “landed” the identity of Lucas Moore's fiancée, and she was pregnant on top of

The restroom was empty.Dylan’s eyes flew wide. “Where is she? Where did Layla go?”The manager rushed over when he heard Dylan had arrived. He took one look at the empty restroom and froze as well. “Where is she? She was here last night. I am sure of it.“After you all left, we did not touch the room. We locked it and went home.”Dylan narrowed his eyes. Something felt wrong. He told the manager to pull up the security footage. The manager returned quickly, his face completely drained of color. “The footage is gone.”“What?”Dylan was stunned. “How is that possible?”“We do not know either. The recordings from last night should not have been overwritten. We checked every time block, but the parts showing Layla locked inside and the part where she left are both missing.”A thought struck Dylan. “Didn’t Mr. Moore visit the club last night?“You did not see him on the camera?”The manager suddenly understood. “There was no trace of him on the footage. It seems headquarters del

Dylan’s toothbrush slipped from his hand and hit the floor with a sharp clatter. His blank memories snapped back into place in an instant. Everything from the night before came rushing back.“You are sure you notified her?”The assistant answered without hesitation. “I am positive I did.”Dylan’s expression shifted in a dozen directions. He finally muttered, “Fine. I will deal with it when I get to the office,” and hung up.On the other end, the assistant rolled his eyes.Everyone at the company knew exactly who had carried Alya this far. Layla had been gone only a few days and they were already drowning in chaos. Who knew what disasters were waiting next. The assistant shook his head, reassured anxious employees that Dylan was on his way, then quietly began thinking about updating his resume. When Dylan came out of the bathroom, Lily was still sound asleep on the bed.He approached with a complicated expression and gently tapped her cheek. “Lily, wake up.”She let out a soft

Dylan had drunk too much the night before. The sudden ringing that woke him felt like someone splitting his head open with an axe.He rubbed his temples irritably. “What happened?”“Mr. Hall, did you forget? Our partner company was scheduled to come in at nine thirty this morning to sign the contract. We tried calling you the whole morning, but you never picked up. They waited until ten o’clock, then left. Our vice president called to apologize, but they hung up on him. Five minutes ago, their side said the contract signing needed to be postponed.“Mr. Hall, it is obvious they do not plan to work with us anymore. What should we do?”This was Alya’s biggest project of the year. The team had spent half a year negotiating the cooperation. The partner company had only recently agreed to sign. And now, the whole deal fell apart because the head of Alya showed up late. Anyone who heard this would laugh. For Alya, this was a massive loss.“I did not know anything about a nine thirty sig

“You actually have decent self-awareness.”Lucas let out a quiet laugh. “But unfortunately for you, the Moore family is not the cold, heartless machine you imagine.“If there is something you need and it is within our ability, we will help you.“Pregnancy is difficult. A woman carrying a child for ten months should never be treated without compassion.”Layla stared at him, stunned. She had always assumed that what existed between them was nothing more than a transaction. From the very first meeting, everything about him suggested that he only cared about the baby. Their marriage was nothing more than paperwork. How could she expect anything more?Yet here he was, telling her that the Moore family would never treat her without humanity.Did that mean he did not completely reject her?She remembered what Ezra had told her about the clothes.Suddenly she realized that Lucas had been quietly helping her from the shadows. She had simply been too consumed by betrayal to notice.“Th
