Chapter 4

مؤلف: Big Belly
When I got to the parking lot in the morning, I spotted the SUV at a glance.

I did not say anything when I noticed all their luggage had been loaded in.

Eleanor saw me and handed me her phone.

“I already bought you a three-hour bus ticket for 11 a.m. Copy the details in yours.”

I did not take it.

Edmund got out of the passenger seat and said, “I’ll take the bus today. Everett’s been stuck riding buses by himself the past couple of days.”

The moment he said that, Faye and Lily frowned.

“You’re just starting to feel better.

“That whole stretch is winding mountain roads. You’ll be throwing up again.”

Eleanor pulled him back, too.

“I don’t feel comfortable letting you take the bus.”

I stood there as I recalled the six-hour bus ride from before.

When Eleanor saw that I still had not accepted her phone, she said, “Just take it.”

I looked at her and said, “I don’t want to ride the bus today.”

Everyone froze.

Faye was the first to react.

“Then, what are we supposed to do?”

“We can’t make Edmund go instead.”

I said, “We can wait for the car to get fixed.”

“Are we supposed to just cancel today’s plans?”

“We could rent another car.”

Lily looked a little annoyed.

“It’s only three hours. Is it really that big of a deal?”

Eleanor’s expression darkened as well.

“Everett, don’t start acting out right now.”

I looked at her.

In the past, I would have explained myself and told her that I was not acting out.

This time, I did not want to give in, but I also felt that explaining everything was pointless.

I pushed the phone back to her and said, “You guys go ahead.”

Edmund got out of the car. “What are you going to do then?”

I pulled my suitcase upright and said, “I’ll figure it out myself.”

Faye laughed. “See? I told you he’d be fine.”

Lily waved at me and said, “See you tonight, then.”

Eleanor stared at me for a long while before saying, “I’ll still send the ticket to your phone.

“Call me when you get there.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

After they drove off, I stood there for a long time.

Half of my baseball cap was sticking out of the trunk.

I did not call out to them.

After I got back to the hotel, the first thing I did was cancel the rest of the hotel bookings and sightseeing reservations.

Then, I opened the work text from yesterday.

[Hi, is the position still open?]

Ryan replied promptly, [Yes, it is.]

I paused for a few seconds, then replied, [I would like to accept the offer.]

After I sent the message, I started packing my suitcase.

I did not take the cap.

No one even asked about the jacket I had left in the car.

At 11 p.m., I dragged my suitcase back to my apartment near campus.

My roommate, Ivan Winifred, was surprised to see me.

“Aren’t you supposed to be gone for a few more days?”

“I returned early.”

He looked at me and asked, “Did you and Eleanor get into a fight?”

I shook my head. “No.”

It was the truth. We had not really fought.

Her charger, earphones, and two jackets were still sitting on my desk where she had left them.

I found a cardboard box and packed them one by one.

I dug out the movie tickets I had never been able to throw away, our photos together, and the ticket stubs from our first date. After looking at them for a moment, I placed them in the box.

They did not even fill one cardboard box.

Finally, at midnight, someone texted in the group chat.

[Has Everett arrived yet?]

Faye replied, [He’s probably still sulking.]

Edmund chimed in, [Should we give him a call?]

After a few minutes, Eleanor texted, [Leave him alone. He’ll cool off on his own.]

I stared at the texts for a while.

For the first time, I did not feel that familiar heaviness in my chest. She was right.

I really was giving myself time to cool down, but this time, cooling down did not mean I would eventually go back to them.

It was about slowly getting used to no longer following them.

The next morning, I finished my last graduation procedure.

Only after the cab pulled out of the school gate did Eleanor send me a text.

[What do you want to eat when you get back tonight?]

[We really did put you in a tough spot yesterday. I’ll treat you to something nice.]

She was still the same as always. She thought one nice meal and a few sweet words would be enough to win me over and bring me back.

Just as they announced boarding, she called me.

I did not pick up.

Before I turned off my phone, I saw the four of them in the group chat still discussing where to go next.

They were still thinking of the trip as a five-person graduation trip.

But the person who had always accommodated them, no matter how many times they went on without him, had already dragged his luggage through the boarding gate.

This time, I was choosing to find a place where I really belonged.

Three months later, the company organized a short weekend road trip.Five people shared a seven-seater car. Before getting in, William Pierce, a coworker of mine, asked, “Where are you sitting?”I subconsciously walked toward the back row as I said, “I’m fine anywhere.”He looked confused.“Anywhere?“The front seat’s empty. Don’t you get carsick? Take it.”I stopped. “How’d you know I get carsick?”“Didn’t you say on the last work trip that looking at your phone on the highway makes you queasy?”He spun the car keys in his hand and continued, “Hurry and sit in the front.“Don’t puke in my car.”A few people nearby burst out laughing.I laughed, too.I sat down in the front passenger seat, and my phone lit up with a notification. It was a text from Edmund. It had been a while since I had heard from him.He had sent me the graduation photo. In it, Eleanor, Faye, Lily, and Edmund stood at the school gate. There was a small empty space in the middle.[We took graduatio

Eleanor did not come to my office to pester me again. But I still received texts from her every day.[It’s getting colder today. Make sure you dress warmly.][You get sick easily, too. Don’t eat too much takeout.][Text me back when you get a chance.]Those were the words I had desperately waited to hear in the past. But I did not even feel like replying. One Friday night, Lily called me.“Just give me five minutes.”“Hm.”For once, she got straight to the point.“Faye and I went back through our old chat history.“It’s… pretty embarrassing.”I kept quiet. She let out a self-mocking laugh.“Every time you said you wanted to go somewhere, we always said ‘next time.’“The second Edmund brought something up, we’d basically go that same day.“On your birthday, you wanted barbecue, and we ended up going to the pizza place he wanted.”I was caught off guard when she brought that up. I had almost forgotten about that. She continued, “I never really noticed it before.”“

A week later, the company held its first project presentation. At the last minute, the part I was responsible for was moved to the very beginning. Before I went on stage, the project lead, Lennon Willows, asked me, “Are you feeling nervous?”“I’m alright.”“Is this your first time?”“Yeah.”He handed me the laptop.“Just take your time.“It’s not like anyone’s going to bite your head off if you mess up.”I chuckled a little. The presentation went more smoothly than I had imagined. After it ended, Lennon tapped the table and said, “This looks like a good proposal.“Pulling this off in your first week is impressive for a new hire.”The people in the meeting room applauded. As I sat down, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Eleanor.[I’m downstairs at your office.]I glanced at the text for a few seconds, then went downstairs. She was standing outside the lobby.I had not seen her in a week. She looked like she had lost a lot of weight. She was holding a p

On the third night, Edmund called me.I hesitated for a few seconds, then picked up.It was very quiet on his end.“Everett?”“Yeah.”“Are you blaming me too?”“No.”He was silent for a moment.“The more you say no, the more uneasy I get.”I did not respond. After a while, he said, “The truth is, I’ve known it for a while now.”“What?”“They always take my side.”This time it was my turn to be silent.Edmund let out a low chuckle.“Back when we went out to eat, they always asked what I wanted first.“When we took photos, they always took mine first.“If I said I was tired, they’d stop so I could rest.“Sometimes I knew it wasn’t fair to you.”I asked, “Then, why didn’t you say anything?”The other end of the line was silent for a long time. Edmund said, “Honestly?“Having people always favor me feels pretty good.”That was very honest of him. He admitted it so plainly that I did not have it in me to be angry. He then added, “But I swear I never meant to take

The next afternoon, Ivan sent me a photo of the cardboard box that had been sitting by my desk.It was empty.[Eleanor came by to grab her stuff.]Then, he added, [She looked terrible.]I did not reply.A while later, he sent another text.[She asked when you were coming back. I told her you took a job out of town.][Then, she just stood there for a while without saying anything.]After reading it, I put my phone face down on the desk. The first week at the new company was busy.I picked up my badge, went through training, and familiarized myself with the project.Once I got busy, I could go an entire afternoon without thinking about them. After 9 p.m., Faye called me. “Everett?”“Yeah?”For the first time, she did not start off with a joke.“Did you actually break up with Eleanor?”“Yeah.”“Is it because of the trip?”“Something like that.”She sighed. “Okay, so you broke up with her. But why are you giving Lily and me the cold shoulder too? What’s that about?”M

When the plane landed, I turned my phone back on.Texts came flooding in.I had over a dozen missed calls from Eleanor.Faye and Lily had each called several times, too.The last text in the group chat was from Edmund.[Everett, where are you? Everyone’s been really worried.]I stared at his text for a couple of seconds. Then, I texted Ivan to let him know I had landed safely.Just as I put my phone down, Eleanor called again. I picked it up.“Everett, so you finally decided to pick up?”Her voice sounded tight and restrained.“Where are you?”“I just landed.”“I know you just landed. Which airport?”There was a pause before I answered, “Where my job is.”The other end of the line went quiet.“What job?”“I received an offer a while back.”“When did you get an offer?”“Two weeks ago.”She was clearly thrown off.“Wait, hold on a second.“You found a job two weeks ago, and it’s out of town?”“Yeah.”“Why didn’t you tell me?”Her question almost made me laugh.
