"Open the door, Devlin! Please!"

I hit the steel door with both fists. My hands were bleeding. The cold bit into my skin like knives. Minus fifty degrees. Behind me, the zombies were getting closer. I could hear them groaning in the snow.

"I gave you everything!" I screamed. "I transferred the shares! I gave you the safe house! Let me in!"

The small window in the door slid open. Devlin's face appeared, warm and smiling. Then Eris moved into view beside him. She was wearing his sweater. His arm went around her waist.

My heart stopped.

"You're sleeping together," I whispered.

Devlin laughed. "Nice thumbprint, by the way. It opened every account you had."

"Three years," he added. "Three years of playing the perfect fiancé. I'm so glad I don't have to pretend anymore."

"Thanks for the billions you left behind, babe," Eris said sweetly. "Devlin and I will spend them well."

She touched the necklace on her neck. My mother's necklace. The last thing Mom ever gave me.

"Sis, honestly," Eris said, tilting her head, "all that blood on you kind of matches this necklace. Too bad the things out there don't appreciate the look."

"Why?" My voice broke. "How could you do this to me? You liars!"

The window slammed shut.

A hand grabbed my shoulder from behind. Then another. Rotten teeth sank into my neck.

"I'll kill you both!" I screamed into the snow. "I swear I'll kill you both!"

Then everything went black.

...

I gasped and sat up.

Soft sheets. Warm air. Sunlight coming through the curtains.

I touched my neck. No blood. No bite. My skin was smooth.

"What?" I grabbed my phone from the nightstand. My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped it.

October 4.

Fourteen days before the end of the world.

"I came back," I whispered. "I really came back."

Tears ran down my face, but I wiped them away fast. Crying was what the old Morana did. The old Morana trusted the wrong people and died for it.

"Not this time," I said. "This time, I'm protecting Mom's fortune. No matter what."

A soft blue light flashed in front of my eyes.

[Hidden storage space activated.]

[Current capacity: 500 cubic meters.]

I stared at the floating words. Then I reached out and touched my hairbrush. It vanished. I thought about it, and it was back in my hand.

A slow smile spread across my face. "Well. That changes everything."

...

That afternoon, I walked past the living room. Devlin's voice stopped me.

"Babe, how's that prenup asset transfer coming along?"

I stepped behind the wall and looked in. Devlin was on the couch. Eris sat on the arm of it, playing with his hair.

"Don't worry," she said, laughing. "It's all ready. Once she signs, everything is ours."

My nails dug into my palms. In my first life, I signed it without reading a single word.

"Enjoy it while you can," I said under my breath. "This time, I'll make sure you both get exactly what you deserve."

...

The warehouse manager looked at my order list three times.

"Three containers of canned food? Just that alone?" He raised an eyebrow. "Miss, are you opening a supermarket or getting ready for war?"

"None of your business." I pushed the check across the desk. "Take it."

He looked at the number on the check and his mouth fell open.

"Medicine," I said. "Heavy-duty generators. Winter survival gear. Water filters. Anything that keeps people alive. I'm buying all of it."

The workers behind him whispered to each other.

"She just dropped millions without blinking."

"She's out of her mind."

I didn't care what they thought. In thirteen days, they would understand.

Every box went into my storage space the moment nobody was looking. The military gear I ordered under a fake research company. The food I bought as regular grocery stock for a business that didn't exist.

Nobody would trace any of it back to me.

[Warning. Storage space almost full.]

[Absorb diamonds to make the space bigger.]

I frowned at the blue words. "Diamonds?"

There was only one place in this city that sold raw diamonds by the ton. The black market.

And nobody walks into the black market empty-handed.

...

The weapons dealer's shop was hidden behind a car repair garage. Guns covered every wall.

I pointed. "Pack all of these. And everything on that wall too. Box it up."

The dealer's eyes went wide. "Lady, this is enough to arm a whole Marine squad."

"Good." I handed him the money. "Because I'm going to the black market. And I'm going armed to the teeth."

The bell above the door rang as he started packing.

My phone buzzed. Devlin's name lit up the screen. I let it ring twice, then answered.

"Babe, you've been ignoring my calls all day," he said, sounding annoyed. "Anyway, I just used your card to buy Eris a five-carat diamond. I've got to take care of your little sister, right? We're family."

Artan turned to his men and raised his gun in the air."Brothers! Load the armor-piercing rounds," he shouted. "We're going to crack open a mystery box!"The men cheered and ran to their trucks....Inside the fortress, I was changing the bandage on Nikolai's back. The cuts from the black market were healing fast, faster than any human's would. I peeled off his shirt to check the last one.He went stiff. "Boss, next time you strip me, could you give me a little warning first?"I raised an eyebrow. "What? You have a problem with it?""I wouldn't dare." His ears went pink again. He looked down at the floor. "I like it when you do that."I pressed the fresh bandage onto his back and patted it. "Good boy."He made a small sound, half a laugh and half a snort. Then the security screen beeped. Three black trucks were pulling up in front of my gate. Men jumped out with big guns and bags full of something heavy."Looks like some people aren't happy about our little party," I said.Nikolai sto

I stood up and looked down at him. "Monsters bite back," I said. "So listen carefully. If you ever betray me, I have ten thousand ways to make you wish you were dead." Nikolai didn't flinch. He lowered his head. "From the moment you opened that cage," he said, "this monster answers to one master alone." He lifted his golden eyes to mine. "My life is yours, my Boss." The wind howled outside the cabin. Something in my chest went warm, but I turned away before he could see my face. "Good," I said. "Then get some rest. Tomorrow, we go home." ... Two days later, the storm was still going. Snow buried the roads. The whole city had gone silent except for the groans of the infected. My fortress stood strong. The heaters hummed. The lights glowed. Nikolai sat on the couch eating his third bowl of beef stew like he hadn't eaten in years. An alarm beeped on the security screen. [Movement detected at the front gate.] I tapped the screen. The outside camera showed two figures shaking i

"I'm sorry! Please, spare me!"The pit owner crawled across the floor toward me on his knees. A minute ago he was swinging an electric stick. Now his face was wet with tears."I didn't know who you were," he begged. "I'll do anything you say. Anything!""Save it." I looked at the manager. "Lock him in the lab. Let him see what it's like to be turned into a monster."Two guards grabbed the owner by the arms and dragged him away. He screamed the whole way down the hall until a heavy door slammed shut. The room went quiet.Down in the pit, the wolf-man slowly stood up. His chains rattled. His golden eyes stayed on me, sharp and careful."You..." His voice was low and rough. "What do you want with me?""All of you," I said. "I just paid for it."The manager bowed again. "Ma'am, shall I arrange an armored car to take you home safely?""No need." I waved my hand. "Everyone out. Close the door. I'll handle the rest myself."Nobody argued. The crowd left fast. The door shut behind them.I wal

"Funny," I said, looking down at her. "You're the one who looks ready to get on her knees."Eris stood in the snow, staring at her flattened bag. Her whole body shook with anger."Morana, don't celebrate too soon!" she screamed. "I'll end you!"Devlin pulled her back by the arm, but his eyes burned into the camera. "Just you wait.""My mother won't let this slide!" Eris shouted over his shoulder. "Do you hear me? She won't!"I closed the side hatch. Their voices became quiet, then disappeared down the road.Let her mother come. I had a few things to say to Elese too....At dawn, the head builder knocked on my office door. His face was gray with tiredness, but he was smiling."Miss Ashford, the electric grid is fully online. And the last shipment of military supplies just arrived.""Unload everything into the defense yard," I said."Yes, ma'am." He looked out the window at the new steel walls, proud of his work. "Everything's built to the highest standard. Nobody is getting through th

"Morana? Why are you buying all these psycho weapons?" I turned around. Eris stood in the doorway of the shop with her nose wrinkled. Devlin was right behind her, still holding his phone. "So creepy," Eris said, looking at the guns on the wall. "None of your damn business." I turned back to the counter. Devlin walked up and put a hand on my shoulder. "Babe, is the paranoia acting up again?" He looked at the dealer and gave a sad little smile. "Sorry. She's been under a lot of stress lately." I looked at his hand on my shoulder. In my first life, that hand pushed me out into the snow. Still putting on a show? I thought. Fine. Let these two clowns dance a little longer. Eris grabbed Devlin's arm and pulled him away. "Forget her, babe. Ignore the psycho. Come on, I saw something I want next door." ... The ski shop next door was all glass and white lights. Eris walked straight to a silver ski suit in the window and tapped the glass. "This one," she told the cashier. "Ring it up
