Chapter 1

Author: Deep Sea Miner
Mason Fuller's 18th birthday celebration was an extravagant one. The child I'd raised myself had turned into a man with sharp, piercing features and an intimidating air. He looked remarkably similar to the young Simon Fuller.

Simon stood to his left, and on his right was Alicia Reed, who was glowing even at her age.

As for me, Simon's lawfully wedded wife, I stood in the corner, like an outsider spying on their happiness.

"Zoe, get Alicia a glass of water," Simon instructed.

It'd been 18 years now, and he'd grown accustomed to barking orders at me like that. He took it for granted, as if I were the housekeeper and not his wife.

I kept my eyes down and replied agreeably, "Okay."

"Oh, no, Zoe! I couldn't possibly let you wait on me like that. If anyone else saw this, they would think that you liked waiting on people!"

Alicia pretended to sound apologetic, but her gaze was taunting. She even pulled a document from her handbag and tossed it to me.

"But then again, now that Mason is all grown up, don't you think it's time you finally return the title of Mrs. Fuller to whom it rightfully belongs? After all, you've occupied it long enough now," she remarked.

"As it is, Mason is my son. Sure, you put a lot of effort into raising him, but there can't be two ladies of the house."

The surrounding guests began whispering among themselves, their sharp gazes landing on me.

"Poor thing. Zoe raised someone else's son for 18 years, and now, his real mom comes back to reap the rewards."

"Why are you pitying her? She's the one who was greedy for the Fuller family's wealth—or maybe she was dumb enough to pine after someone who doesn't even love her. She tried raising another woman's son for so long just so she could win his love. Well, serve her right!"

These words were like salt being poured over wounds that had long since healed. I didn't argue with anyone. I only looked at Mason, who'd remained silent the whole time. The son I'd personally raised was now standing beside another woman. He simply gave me a short nod.

My heart stung dully.

I trembled as I reached for his arm, my voice choked. "Mason… I'm your mom. Alicia ignored your existence all throughout the last 18 years. I'm the one who—"

"Don't touch me!" Mason yanked his arm away from me, his eyes full of disgust and impatience. "Can't you understand simple words? My mom is back. You're just the nanny. Shouldn't you know your place? Just the sight of your haggard face makes my stomach churn. Get lost!"

"Now that's my son!" Alicia nodded in satisfaction as she took Mason's arm again.

Meanwhile, I stumbled backward and almost fell from how forcefully Mason had pulled away from me.

My heart quivered.

When Mason was five years old, he ran a high fever. Alicia and Simon were too busy enjoying a candlelit dinner to bother taking care of him. I was the one who took him to the hospital and stayed by his side to tend to him. I wiped his sweat and fed him his medicine.

At the time, he'd clutched my hand and begged all night long, "Don't go, Mommy."

But now, he was saying these things to me.

"Fine. I'll go. I'll leave right away and stay far, far away from all of you. I don't want to be a part of this family anymore."

The security guards unceremoniously threw Simon and Alicia out of the villa. Along with them went a messy heap of all their belongings.Having lost the company and the villa and now buried under debts from past extravagance, Simon suffered a complete fall from disgrace. All of his old fair-weather friends scattered like the breeze.Since he had no money now, Alicia also ran off after taking the last of his cash. With no home and nothing left to his name, Simon was forced to rent a filthy basement to live in. Only then did he truly understand how precious that home he once scorned was, along with me, the one who always kept a light on for him.He refused to give up.Every day before dawn, he lingered outside the apartment where I stayed or the company building. Even when the security guards shooed him off, or when passersby laughed at him, he stuck around like a stubborn leech. One night, in the pouring rain, Simon dropped to his knees beside my car, completely drenched as he sobb

Simon trembled with rage, his finger quivering as he pointed at Mason. "You ungrateful child! I spent a fortune raising you, and this is how you repay me? I should never have had you in the first place!""Well, unfortunately for you, it's too late," Mason retorted coolly.Mr. Sloane seized the moment to deliver the final blow."There's more. Mr. Simon Fuller has made no contribution to the company's operations, and his personal conduct has been questionable, tarnishing the company's image."He took out another document and placed it on the table."Therefore, in accordance with the late Mr. Fuller Senior's will, when Ms. Johnson receives her shares, the remaining shares and executive power over Fuller Group that were previously under Mr. Simon Fuller's management shall be transferred to Mr. Mason Fuller. "Effective immediately, Mr. Simon Fuller will no longer hold any position in Fuller Group."The news struck the pair like a bolt of lightning.Simon's knees buckled, and he slu

"What did you say?" Alicia shrieked as she jumped to her feet. "That's impossible! This will is fake! The shares were supposed to go to my son! How can it go to some outsider?"And even if it was going to go to anyone else other than Mason, I'm his mother! Why does she get to have the shares instead?"Simon frowned, his face darkening. "Are you sure about this, Mr. Sloane? Why would my grandfather give the shares to her? She's just a—""Just a what?" Mr. Sloane interrupted curtly. "Mr. Fuller, with all due respect, your grandfather knew you were an incorrigible playboy who was unfit to carry on the family legacy."He said even animals raise the children they give birth to, and not doing so makes one worse than an animal. He also said that the debt owed to a parent for the care and nurture provided far outweighs everything else. "30% of Fuller Group's shares serve as compensation for Ms. Johnson's hard work over the last 18 years. It's what she rightfully deserves.""I don't beli

"Mason, are you studying? Are your eyes tired? I made you some soup. Come drink it while it's still hot," Alicia crooned.Seated at his desk, Mason didn't even bother looking up. "Just leave it on the side."Alicia didn't give up. She sat down beside him and began wiping her tears."Mason, I know you resent me. But I had no choice but to leave you back then. Simon's grandpa didn't approve of me. I even had to go into hiding all throughout my pregnancy just so I could give birth to you safely."And once you were born, his grandpa whisked you away and gave you to Zoe to raise. I only agreed to be your father's mistress so I could see you. And besides, Zoe is just a housekeeper. She's only nice to you because she's after the Fuller family's money."I'm the only one in this world who truly loves you, Mason. I'm your mom, and you're my son. In the future, the entire Fuller family fortune is going to belong to the two of us!"Hearing these blatant lies and twisted truths, Mason paused,

With an airy smile, Alicia said, "I'm with Simon. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of each other from now on."She reached for the auction catalog on the table, which was open to the listing for the painting Mrs. Whitman bought. Alas, in a moment of carelessness, she accidentally tipped her wine glass, and the wine poured all over Mrs. Whitman's haute couture gown that was worth millions of dollars.Mrs. Whitman let out a sharp cry.Panicked, Alicia blurted out, "Oh, dear! Why didn't you move away? Well, the dress doesn't look like it cost much anyway. I could probably find the same thing in a sales bin at a big-box store. If it's really such a big deal, I'll just buy you another one."An awkward silence ensued.Meanwhile, Simon had rushed over just in time to hear Alicia's idiotic remark, and he almost blacked out on the spot.Did she know she was talking to the wife of the chairman of Whitman Group? And that gown was the final masterpiece created by a renowned designer just before

"You and I no longer have anything to do with each other, Simon," I declared over the phone. "I'm no longer obligated to keep up your messes for you, nor is it my duty to put on a show with you either."Simon's voice was still a little scratchy from his hangover, but the most prominent of all was the haughty derision in his tone."Even if you're trying to get my attention, Zoe, can you at least come up with a less clichéd excuse? What's this about a divorce? I don't remember ever agreeing to it, and I certainly wouldn't have signed any divorce papers!"Without my money, Zoe, you wouldn't even be able to afford to eat! Are you sure you can bear to leave me?"His absurd display of self-confidence was incredibly amusing to me."You might've been completely wasted then, Simon, but you did sign the divorce papers yourself. It's fine if you don't remember it. Alicia was right beside you when—""That's enough!" Simon rudely cut me off, his voice impatient. "Stop giving me this crap. I'm
