Chapter 1

Author: Enlightened
My sister, Sierra Reed, was standing at the college entrance with her suitcase. The moment she noticed me, her smile disappeared.

"Sierra!" I took an envelope from my bag. Inside was a bank card with all the money I'd saved over the years. "Take it."

Not even a second had passed before Sierra pushed it away, her face full of disgust and hostility. "I can earn my own living. I don't need your money!"

I awkwardly pulled my hand back.

It was the first day of college. Cars streamed past the entrance as parents helped their kids unload their luggage, filling the air with laughter and reminders.

But only silence hung between us.

"I've already saved enough to cover all four years of your tuition. This is for your living expenses…"

"I already said no need. Don't you understand?" She cut me off, glaring at me with red eyes. "If it weren't for you, I'd at least have a normal family. Our parents would come back, and we would live together. But you ruined everything."

My face paled at the hateful look in Sierra's eyes.

I wanted to tell her it wasn't like that. I wanted to ask her if she knew what I'd been through all these years and tell her that the happy family she'd imagined never existed.

But in the end, I didn't say a word.

Sierra noticed my hesitation and gave me a mocking smile. "I hate you. Don't contact me again. I'll pay you back every penny you've ever spent on me."

With that, she turned and walked away, dragging her suitcase into the crowd without looking back.

The September sun was glaring, and it stung my eyes. I stayed there for a long time, leaving only when a security guard gave me a puzzled look.

When I got home, I called my best friend, Helen Kerr.

"Do me a favor, okay? Sierra refused to accept my money. Could you send her my money every month under your name as her sponsor?"

Helen sighed. "Shannon, is this necessary? Sierra deserves to know what happened back then. At least let her know what you did for her and how much you suffered."

"She just got into college, and she has a bright future. There's no need to bring up that ugly past. I don't want it hanging over her during her college years."

"But…"

"I'm going to die soon." I forced a smile. "If she learns the truth, it'll only destroy her. Let's leave it at that. Send her the money on time every month. Don't tell her it's from me."

Helen stayed silent so long that I thought the call had dropped. When she spoke, her voice caught. "Okay. But this isn't fair to you or her."

After that, I sat on the couch and stared at the ceiling.

The doctor said my body had been worn down too badly, and there was nothing they could do. I could live for at most another six months.

Maybe that was for the best.

By the time Sierra graduated from college, I'd be long gone. Since she hated me so much, she'd probably forget about me quickly and start a new life.

For the next few weeks, my condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctor gently told Sierra that treatment was no longer working and recommended transferring me to hospice care.Sierra refused to give up and looked everywhere for other treatments. She even reached out to hospitals overseas. But I knew it was inevitable. On a rainy night, the pain became excruciating, and not even the painkillers worked anymore.Sierra held my hand tightly as tears fell onto it. She begged, "Shannon, please don't leave me. I beg you. Please."I tried to open my eyes and look at her. "Sierra, listen to me."She leaned in, bringing her ear close to my lips."Once I'm gone, pass the evidence… to the police."Sierra nodded, tears dripping onto my face."Live well… Don't let hate consume your life…"She choked out. "Okay, I promise. I'll do as you say."I struggled to lift my hand and stroke her face. "You're all grown up now… I'm so glad…"Sierra sobbed. "Shannon…""Don't be sad. Having you by my

The hospital room curtains were half-drawn. I leaned against the headboard and looked at Sierra, trying to think of a way to approach the topic."Do you remember how people in the village used to say Mom couldn't have a son when you were little? There's something I never told you. They took a baby boy with them when they left."Sierra nodded.I cleared my throat and said, "That's not their kid."Stunned, Sierra asked, "What do you mean?"I looked into her eyes. "They bought Leo. They didn't move away for work back then. They wanted to buy a boy."Sierra's mouth was agape, but no sound came out.I continued, "They'd always wanted a son, but after what happened to Dad, they couldn't have any more children. So they spent years saving up before getting in touch with a human trafficking ring."She finally found her voice. "How did you know?"I narrowed my eyes, trying to remember as the memories flooded back. "I witnessed it. The day they left, I saw them holding a baby. His baby b

We eventually decided to move to another hospital. Treatment was harder than I'd expected. The chemo made me so sick I couldn't eat, and my hair started falling out in handfuls.Sierra stayed with me the whole time. She told her school about our situation, and they let her put off college for a year. She told me, "I can start college a year later, but you're the only sister I have."Every day, Sierra went back and forth between the hospital and our place, doing laundry, cooking, and taking care of me.Sometimes, I'd wake up in the middle of the night and find her slumped beside my hospital bed, still clutching her unfinished course exercises. She insisted on studying her college courses on her own so she wouldn't fall too far behind. Finally, I couldn't help but say, "You're going to wear yourself out!"Sierra shook her head and forced a smile. "This is nothing compared to what you did for me."Helen would visit me occasionally, bringing some supplements and news from the outsi

Sierra let go of my hand and sank back into the couch, murmuring, "Six months…"Then, as if she'd suddenly thought of something, she lifted her head, her eyes lighting up. "Shannon, let's go to a bigger hospital! I'll go through this with you. There has to be a way!"I shook my head helplessly. "It won't work, Sierra. I've already…"She stood up and grabbed my hand. "I don't believe it! Let's go to a better hospital. There has to be something they can do! The money…"Sierra looked at the envelope. "I don't need that money anymore. I won't go to college. Use it for your treatment! We can spend as much as we need!"I pulled my hand away, genuinely upset this time. "Don't be ridiculous! How can you just give up your education? How are you supposed to make a living? What will people think of you?"Sierra's reply left me speechless."Then what about you? I won't even have a sister anymore. Why should I care what anyone thinks of me?" She wailed. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry, Shannon. I r

I opened the door, and the two of us stared at each other in the entryway, the air between us heavy with tension.Sierra's eyes were red, and she was clutching an envelope. After a long while, she spoke in a hoarse voice. "Why didn't you tell me?"I didn't answer. I just moved aside to let her in.She didn't move, staring at me stubbornly. "What exactly was that summer camp?"I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, then turned and walked into the living room. "Come in. Let's talk."The day had finally come.Sierra followed me in.I sat on the couch in silence for a long time, unsure how to bring up the topic. In the end, I chose to break it to her gently."In the first year after Mom and Dad left the village to find work, they came back and said they wanted to send me to a summer camp in the city. They said room and board were covered, and I'd get to meet kids from the big city."But when I got there, I realized it wasn't a summer camp. It was a deal."Sierra's fingers tigh
