Anderson lit a cigarette and smoked it. Wisps of light green smoke lingered on his refined, fair cheeks.

After a brief moment, he said gently, “Get Rylan on the phone now! Tell him I’m buying him dinner at the club we met at last time! Also, bring a case of the Franconian red wine with us.”

Charlie nodded. “Roger, Mr. Anderson.”

The night rolled on.

Anderson threw up on the busy streets of Brookesville. Charlie was standing beside him and soothing him. “You can’t drink like this in the future, Mr. Anderson. Mr. Archibald is going to question you if he finds out about this!”

Holding the handrail, he barked, “He doesn’t have to know about this!”

Standing upright, he staggered toward his car and got into it.
