The words hung in the air like a curse.

“Frostfall Palace has fallen.”

No one spoke.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Lyra stared at Captain Astrid, her heart pounding painfully against her ribs.

“…No.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“It can’t be.”

Astrid lowered her head.

“I wish it weren’t true, Your Highness.”

Karl stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Astrid took a deep breath.

“It happened three nights ago.”

“We had just finished preparing the palace for your arrival.”

“The city was peaceful.”

“There was no warning.”

She clenched her fists.

“Then…”

“…the sky turned black.”

Three Nights Earlier…

Snow drifted peacefully over Frostfall Palace.

King Cassian Valerius stood on the northern balcony overlooking his kingdom.

His silver cloak fluttered gently in the freezing wind.

Beside him stood Rowan’s father, General Aldric Ashvale.

“My King,” Aldric said quietly.

“The Princess is on her way.”

Cassian smiled.

“Good.”

“She deserves to know the truth.”

Before Aldric could answer

A deafening explosion shook the entire palace.

BOOOOM!

The northern wall collapsed.

Ice and stone rained onto the courtyard.

Soldiers rushed to their weapons.

The palace bells rang frantically.

“Enemy attack!”

“Protect the King!”

Out of the swirling snow marched an army dressed entirely in black.

Thousands of soldiers.

Their armor bore no crest.

Only a single silver raven engraved upon every breastplate.

At their front…

Rode a lone figure upon a massive white wolf.

His face remained hidden beneath a black hood.

Only his golden eyes shone through the darkness.

The Shadow King.

Back in the present…

Astrid’s voice trembled.

“He never introduced himself.”

“He didn’t have to.”

“Everyone knew.”

Lucien closed his eyes.

“So he finally moved.”

Astrid nodded.

“He demanded one thing.”

He looked at Lyra.

“…You.”

Lyra froze.

“Me?”

“He told the King to surrender the Princess.”

“And when His Majesty refused…”

Astrid swallowed hard.

“…the battle began.”

Cassian drew his ancient sword.

Its silver blade glowed with icy blue light.

“Defend Frostfall!”

His command echoed across the battlefield.

The Frost Court answered with fearless determination.

Snow wolves charged.

Ice archers filled the sky with frozen arrows.

For hours…

The kingdom held its ground.

Then…

The Shadow King stepped onto the battlefield.

He carried no weapon.

No shield.

Only his bare hands.

“He destroyed our front line alone,” Astrid whispered.

“Nothing could stop him.”

Lucien’s expression darkened.

“Did Cassian fight him?”

Astrid nodded.

“He did.”

She closed her eyes, remembering.

“It was the greatest duel I have ever witnessed.”

The Frost King’s sword froze the earth wherever it struck.

Mountains of ice rose from the ground.

Blizzards swallowed entire battalions.

Yet…

The Shadow King walked through every attack.

Untouched.

Almost amused.

Karl frowned.

“How?”

Astrid shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“But then…”

“He used a strange power.”

Black shadows spread across the battlefield like living smoke.

Every soldier they touched collapsed unconscious.

The shadows ignored the innocent.

They targeted only warriors.

Lucien whispered,

“Shadow Dominion…”

“I hoped that technique had been lost forever.”

Astrid’s eyes filled with tears.

“The King knew he couldn’t win.”

“So…”

“He gave us one final order.”

She reached into her cloak and carefully removed a small silver box.

“This.”

She handed it to Lyra.

“It belonged to your father.”

Lyra’s hands trembled as she accepted it.

The moment her fingers touched the box—

It clicked open by itself.

Inside lay a beautiful silver ring engraved with a crescent moon intertwined with a snowflake.

A folded letter rested beneath it.

On the front were written four simple words.

For Princess Lyra Alone.

Tears welled in Lyra’s eyes.

“This…”

“He kept it all these years?”

Astrid nodded.

“He said your father entrusted it to him.”

“Only you were meant to receive it.”

Suddenly

A chilling laugh echoed through the Silver Pass.

Everyone turned.

Standing atop the cliffs overlooking the valley…

A lone man clapped slowly.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

He wore elegant black robes.

A silver raven rested calmly on his shoulder.

Unlike the Blood Hunters…

Unlike Malrik…

He looked refined.

Almost noble.

He smiled politely.

“My apologies.”

“I couldn’t resist witnessing such a touching reunion.”

Karl immediately stepped in front of Lyra.

“Who are you?”

The stranger bowed gracefully.

“My name…”

“…is Darius.”

He looked directly at Lyra.

“I serve His Majesty.”

“The Shadow King.”

Lucien drew his greatsword.

“You came alone?”

Darius smiled.

“I only need to deliver a message.”

He reached into his robe and tossed a black envelope onto the ground before Lyra.

“It is an invitation.”

“From your uncle.”

Lyra hesitated before picking it up.

The black wax seal bore the same crest she had seen in her vision.

A crown wrapped in shadows.

She broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of black parchment.

Written in elegant silver ink were the words:

My dearest niece,

You have spent your life believing monsters stole your family.

You were only told half the truth.

Come to Blackthorn Citadel.

Come alone, and I will show you who truly murdered your parents.

Bring anyone with you…

…and the Frost King dies.

I await you.

Your Uncle, Adrian

The letter slipped from Lyra’s trembling hands.

Karl caught it before it touched the ground.

His expression hardened.

“It’s a trap.”

Lucien nodded.

“Without question.”

But Lyra couldn’t tear her eyes away from the signature.

Your Uncle.

For the first time…

She realized the battle ahead wasn’t just for a kingdom.

It was for the shattered remnants of her own family.
