Chapter 3

Author: Maple
Noah's reply came fast.

[What's there to think about? Don't you want to stay by my side?]

I stared at the message and laughed—out of pure anger.

He was always like this. Treating me like his personal property. Making decisions for me like it was his god-given right.

Picking out my clothes without asking, saying nothing else looked good on me.

Forcing me to cut my long hair, saying short hair suited my face better.

He had me backed into a corner, and I was still desperately convincing myself that this was love.

But this time, I wasn't going to force myself anymore.

His second message came through.

[Don't forget the graduation party tomorrow night. Everyone's waiting for us.]

I didn't reply.

The party was held in the academy's Moon Rite Hall.

Classmates clinked glasses around the long table, the air buzzing.

I sat by the door, watching quietly.

Then Mira stood up and tapped a butter knife against her glass.

"Why don't we all share which academy we're going to?"

She looked around the room. "Maybe we'll end up classmates again. We can look out for each other."

The room got loud, fast.

"Rivenhall Academy, Hunting track."

"Bramwell Academy, Potions track."

I sipped my juice and said nothing.

Someone tapped their glass and looked at me.

"Ella, Noah, Mira—what's with the silent sweet trio over there?"

"Come on, obviously they're picking the same academy. Who'd want to be apart?"

Mira ducked her head, shy, letting everyone egg her on.

Then, in front of everyone, she reached over and took Noah's hand.

"Noah and I both applied to Vonick Academy. Law and Contracts track."

Noah looked down at her. He didn't pull away.

Whistles and catcalls erupted.

A few of the she-wolves glanced at me, pity flickering in their eyes.

Someone had to ask. "What about Ella?"

Mira finally looked at me, smiling soft.

"She's going to Vonick too. The Healing track."

The hall went quiet for a beat.

"The Healing track's at the valley campus, right? That's over a hundred miles from the main campus."

"So from now on, every time Ella wants to see Noah, she's gotta go that far."

Noah wasn't looking at me. He was busy gently telling Mira not to stand in the draft, so she wouldn't catch a cold.

I pressed the recorder in my pocket and rose slowly. "I didn't apply for the Healing track."

Mira's smile froze.

"But," she knit her brows at me, "Noah said you did."

"Noah," I turned to him, "did I apply?"

He finally let go of Mira's hand. A flicker of embarrassment crossed his face.

"I filled out the application for you. It's already been submitted."

My voice dropped. "Did you ask for my consent?"

Noah lowered his voice. "Ella, we'll talk at home."

"Say it here. Right now." I locked eyes with him. "Did I ever see that application? Did I sign it?"

The room went quiet, bit by bit.

The embarrassment on Noah's face faded. Impatience crept in, inch by inch.

"You were busy with the family coming-of-age ceremony. I signed it for you."

He lifted his chin. "Spots were limited. I even used my own wolf mark to vouch for you."

He actually thought I should be grateful.

"I don't want to be a healer. And I'm not applying to Vonick Academy."

I looked at him. "For the next four years, I won't be interrupting you and Mira."

Mira's face went pale instantly.

She clutched her chest, swayed slightly, like she was about to collapse.

Noah caught her in his arms immediately, his glare cutting into me like a blade.

"What the hell are you saying? You actually want to go be some priestess?"

His voice went cold. "I went through hell to get you that spot. You back out now, what am I supposed to say?"

Then he added, "You always listened to me before. What's so different this time?"

I looked at that familiar face and felt nothing but absurdity.

He was standing right there, within arm's reach—yet he felt farther away than someone I'd imagined.

How arrogant did he have to be to decide my life for me?

The recording was done. No reason to stay.

I nodded calmly. "Stay and take care of Mira. I'm leaving."

With that, I walked out of the hall.

The moon was up.

Moonlight spilled across the path, like salt scattered over the ground.

I checked the time. One day left before I was gone.

Then—rapid footsteps behind me.

The enforcer stepped outside and pulled the door shut behind him.It was just me and Noah in the room.He stood there, clothes rumpled, breathing uneven. But I didn't ache for him anymore.Noah was silent for a long time before he spoke, low. "Ella, I'm sorry."It was the first time he'd ever apologized to me like he meant it.I said nothing."I know it's too late to say any of this. But I still want you to know—"He dropped his eyes, his voice hoarse. "I didn't pick the Healing track to make you take care of Mira.""I know." My voice was calm. "You just figured it was easier to keep me close that way."His face went pale."Yeah." Noah closed his eyes. "I was scared you'd actually become the High Priestess of the Moon Temple.""You were too good. I didn't know if I could keep up with you."Noah's eyes finally went red."I love you, Ella."The words came too late. So late I no longer needed them. The words seemed to turn to hot coals in his mouth, and he rushed to spit them out."I neve

When the door opened, my eyes locked onto Noah's—wide with shock.Noah's father had his hand clamped on the doorknob, staring at me with cold fury."Hold off on the theatrics." I held my phone up in front of his father. "Take a look at this first."On the screen was a livestream I'd set up. Over a hundred thousand viewers. And the location of that livestream? The exact private room they were in.—Everything that had just happened in this room had played out in front of over a hundred thousand people.Noah's father's face darkened until it looked like it might drip poison.I pocketed my phone and spoke flatly. "The Contract Council is on their way.""Before they get here, you'd all better figure out what you're going to say."Mira finally snapped back to reality and whipped her head toward Noah."Was it you? Did you start the livestream?"Noah shook his head, but his eyes stayed locked on me. "Was it you, Ella?""It was."I didn't hesitate for a second.Yesterday, when I closed the door

Noah's POVWhen the plane landed, Mira slumped against her seat, face pale."Noah, I'm exhausted."She tugged lightly at the hem of his shirt. "Can we go to the Council the day after tomorrow? Just let me rest a bit."There were still three days before the summons deadline.Noah glanced at her and nodded. "Day after tomorrow. Morning. No more delays."The next evening, Mira sent him a restaurant address, saying there was something she wanted to discuss in person.Noah figured she'd finally agreed to come clean. He went. But the moment he pushed the private room door open, he stopped cold. His father sat at the head of the table, expression stone-cold. Mira was beside him, eyes red-rimmed.His father's voice was low and heavy. "Mira told me everything. You dared to misuse the family wolf mark—to vouch for a forged lifetime contract!"Noah's fists clenched. "I'll explain to the Council. I'll take responsibility.""And then what? Noah's POVNoah stood in front of the door for a long time. His raised hand hovered in midair, never quite falling. He wanted to knock again—but then he remembered the way Ella looked at him.No hurt. No hope.Just ice.Mira's hand crept out from behind him, tugging at his sleeve."What do we do now?"Noah pulled his hand back and let out a dry laugh. "We go back."Mira froze. "What about the Council?""Ella was right." He stared at the closed door. "You make your own mess, you clean it up. I'll come clean to the Council."The hand on his sleeve clenched tight."And me?"Noah turned his head.Mira looked up at him, her voice trembling with panic. "I can't lose my spot over this."Her eyes shimmered, her tone as fragile as her expression. "When you explain—can you leave me out of it?""Just say you wrote the application and the signature. I was only there to drop it off. I didn't know anything."Noah looked at her. For a long moment, he said nothing. It felt like the first time he was t

The knock came while I was sorting through star charts for the semester.I figured it was a maid who'd forgotten something. I went to open the door.It was Noah and Mira.Noah's eyes were bloodshot, a dark shadow of stubble along his jaw.The second he saw me, the tension in his shoulders visibly eased.Mira cowered behind him, peeking up timidly, instinctively reaching for his arm.Noah shook her off.Her hand froze in midair."Ella, why did you block me?" He stared at me. "Do you have any idea how many times I called?"I tried to shut the door, but Noah jammed his foot against it.I sneered. "Whether I answer your calls is my choice."Noah frowned, looking at me like he didn't recognize me. "We've known each other for years. You really have to take this all the way?""You're the one who took it all the way, Noah."Noah's lips moved, but nothing came out."You knew I wanted to study prophecy, and you still forged an application for me." Noah's POVNoah had lost count of how many times he'd dialed. The line always gave him the same cold, mechanical message.Ella had blocked him.The thought made him shoot to his feet, his chair scraping hard against the floor. She actually dared.Back when his training ran late, she used to sit there clutching her phone until he texted back—just one word, and she'd finally sleep. Now she'd blocked him.Over that application?"Noah, stop calling."Mira's voice was low. "She knew you used family resources, and she withdrew it anyway. That's just irresponsible."Noah's grip tightened around his phone without thinking. He was about to say something when his phone rang.He picked up instantly."Finally decided to call back? Ella, you—""It's me."His father's voice froze him in place."What's going on with the Healing application?"Noah's throat went tight. "Ella's just throwing a tantrum. I'll make her—""I asked about the application, not your relationship!"The roar hit him like a wall.
