Chapter 2

Autor: Lucky Pumpkin
By the time I got home, the lights in the living room were already on.

Freya stood in front of the full-length mirror in a silver-white wedding dress.

It was the very dress Roland had personally chosen for me in my previous life, yet he had never actually seen me wear it.

The hem swayed gently beneath the lights, making her look even more delicate and frail.

Roland stood beside her with one hand firmly supporting her by the waist. It was as if he feared she might collapse at any moment.

Hearing my footsteps, Freya instinctively tried to turn around, but her legs gave way, and she fell against him.

"Don't push yourself." Roland steadied her in a deep voice before looking up at me. He immediately frowned out of habit.

"Freya has an irregular heartbeat and needs to be monitored. I brought her home so I can take care of her for a while. She saw this wedding dress when she came into the room and wanted to try it on, so I let her."

In my previous life, he had brought Freya straight into the manor without even asking me. I had lost my temper then.

That argument became definitive proof in everyone's eyes that I was too possessive, cold-hearted, and couldn't tolerate the person who saved Roland's life.

This time, I simply hung up my coat and replied calmly, "It's fine. She can stay. Besides, the dress looks beautiful on her."

Roland was clearly stunned for a moment. He couldn't even say the soothing words he had prepared.

Freya looked up at me. Her voice was so soft I could barely hear her. "Aurora, I didn't mean to do this. I really just wanted to try it on."

"If you want to wear it, go ahead." I gently adjusted the strap on her shoulder. "Make yourself at home."

Roland stared at my face for several seconds as if searching for any trace of sarcasm. Only after confirming that there was none did his shoulders gradually relax.

"I knew you'd understand. You're always so reasonable."

There was a time when words like those could make me feel giddy for days. Now, they only sounded ridiculous to me.

To him, being 'reasonable' had always meant convenience. He wanted me to conveniently ignore every grievance and allow him to shift his attention back to Freya whenever he pleased.

The wolf inside me was strangely quiet.

In my previous life, every time Freya approached him, it would claw frantically at my ribs until I could barely breathe.

Now, it simply curled into a ball as if it had finally accepted a truth I had stubbornly refused to face. Roland might have been my fated mate, but he had never truly been mine.

Late that night, I was organizing my research notes when someone gently knocked on my bedroom door.

Freya walked in with the crescent moon pendant in her hand.

"Aurora, can I put this on?" she asked softly while her lashes lowered in a pitiful expression.

The crescent moon pendant was something only the true Luna was supposed to wear.

Apparently, Roland had completely forgotten that.

He immediately stepped forward while shielding Freya behind him. His tone was obviously protective.

"It's just a pendant. Aurora, don't make things difficult for her."

As he spoke, he gently patted Freya's shoulder like he was comforting someone who'd been frightened.

I took the pendant from her and fastened it around her neck myself. The chain rested against her collarbone, and the crescent moon swayed gently beneath the light.

"You should keep it on. It was always meant to be yours anyway," I said.

Freya's smile disappeared for a moment.

Roland, however, seemed relieved. He approached me and spoke in what he thought was a gentle tone.

"You've really changed a lot lately. I like the way you are now. Once our mate bond status is confirmed, we won't have to argue over her anymore."

I glanced at my half-packed suitcase in the corner.

"Indeed, we won't."

In seven days, there would be nothing left to argue about.

As they walked toward the end of the hallway, I heard Freya ask softly, "Will the future Luna really be okay with me staying here all the time? What if she gets upset and leaves you?"

Roland answered without the slightest hesitation, "Aurora loves me too much. At most, she'll sulk for a couple of days, but she'll never leave me."

I continued organizing my employment documents while smiling.

For the first time, his confidence didn't hurt me. It only made him seem a little ridiculous.

The investigation results were officially filed on the third day.The lab's drug residue reports, the city hall's benefit application records, and a timeline of every one of Freya's supposed medical episodes and her contacts with Roland over the past two years were compiled together. The chain of evidence was so clear that no further explanation was necessary. The hearing was held in the pack council chamber.Freya was ordered to testify before the council. She remained silent for a long time before finally lifting her head. Her voice was no longer soft."I was jealous of her."She looked directly at me for the first time without lowering her head."Aurora had everything. She had a complete wolf spirit and her family's support. Everyone already assumed she'd become the Luna."I had nothing. I saved Roland's life once, and I clung to that one thing. I took medication to create symptoms, applied for medical benefits, and pretended I was always on the verge of collapsing."That's

The day our research team decided to return to my former territory to collect control samples, I arrived at the meeting point thirty minutes early. As Ivan handed me the sampling checklist, he offered a brief reminder. "This is a neutral research assignment. Any personal disputes have nothing to do with the institute. If anyone approaches you, let security handle it."I nodded. The moment our convoy crossed the border of my former territory, Roland's scent washed over me. He hadn't brought any attendants. He stood alone at the end of the tree-lined road like he had been waiting for a long time.As soon as I stepped out of the vehicle, he walked toward me, only to be stopped three yards away by two researchers."Sir, this is an official sampling site operated by the Fenrir Medical Research Institute. Unauthorized personnel must remain outside the security perimeter."Roland looked over their shoulders. His gaze was fixed on me. His voice was deep when he spoke. "Aurora, I just wan

Over the next few weeks, Roland didn't show up anymore, but Freya did.She stood outside the main entrance of the research institute for nearly four hours. Her face was pale, and her fingers trembled constantly. She repeated the same words in a soft voice to everyone who passed by."I never intended to replace anyone. I simply couldn't bear to see Roland struggling so much anymore."By the third time security came to notify me, a crowd had already gathered outside the lobby. It happened to be the Fenrir Medical Research Institute's annual open day, and reporters and representatives from six werewolf alliances were moving between floors. The moment I opened the door, Freya grabbed my sleeve."A-Aurora, I can go to the city hall and cancel the mate registration. Please stop making things so difficult for him. He's been so unhappy lately," she said."Sure," I replied. I opened the official city hall portal and pulled up the mate bond dissolution application. "Sign here, and I'll su

Two months later, I completed my first independent experiment at the Fenrir Medical Research Institute. The Werewolf Toxin Serum Research Program focused on a special toxin capable of destroying werewolf blood and their ability to transform, as well as developing a serum to reverse the damage caused by the poisoning. It was one of the institute's most important projects in recent years. Two months ago, I had been nothing more than a newcomer at the research institute. Now, I could independently perform toxin analysis, blood testing, and serum formulation. The lab's white lights stayed on throughout the night.I removed my gloves and looked at the werewolf blood cells in the culture dish, which were gradually regaining their activity. Finally, I let out a sigh of relief."You succeeded." My mentor came over and glanced at the data. A satisfied smile appeared on his face. "Excellent work, Aurora. It looks like accepting you was the right decision."I smiled without saying anythin

I woke up the next day. Thanks to the relatively timely treatment, the spread of the silver poisoning had been brought under control, but my wound still throbbed faintly.I lay in my own bed, and through a gap in the curtains, I could see the sunlight outside.A healer was keeping watch beside my bed.The moment she saw me wake up, she stood up. "You're finally awake! I'll inform Alpha Roland right away!""Don't bother," I interrupted in a hoarse voice. "Where is he?""Alpha Roland has been by Freya's side all this time," she said cautiously. "Apparently, Freya was badly frightened and had a persistent high fever."I closed my eyes and tasted something bitter in my mouth. It was just as I'd expected.Even when I was shot and on the brink of death, Freya was still his top priority."I'd like to rest for a while," I said softly. The healer nodded. Just as she was about to leave, someone knocked on the door."Aurora?" It was Roland. "I heard you're awake. Are you alright?"Th

The banquet was held outdoors. The full moon lit up the night sky as everyone danced in the castle's spacious stone courtyard during the celebration.Moonlight and the surrounding torches illuminated the entire courtyard with a bright, warm glow.I stood alone next to a stone pillar in the corner. Dressed in a dark blue silk gown, I coldly observed the scene before me.Of course, everyone's attention was focused on Roland and Freya.Freya was in a shimmering silver evening gown and stayed nestled against Roland's side. Their intimate gestures drew countless envious glances."Looks like Roland really does adore the shewolf who saved him. He's completely ignoring his own mate.""So the rumors are true. Alpha Roland and Aurora really don't have a good relationship."Their whispers reached me, but I pretended not to hear them. I held my wineglass while my thoughts fixed solely on the Fenrir Medical Research Institute. Only one day remained before my departure."Aurora, are you enj
