By Tuesday morning I’d folded it down small and put it where I kept the other things, behind my eyes, in the cold room. I came downstairs the way I always did, one hand brushing the wall, my count running under my breath, thirty-two from the bedroom, down the stairs, left at the bottom, into the sitting room where the side table sat exactly where it had sat for four years and where I always put my morning tea.
