Chapter 1

I'd booked our anniversary dinner a month ago.

I put on the suit Natalie Dillon once said looked best on me, then strapped on the watch she'd given me.

By six, I was dressed, adjusting my cuff links in the mirror.

My phone rang.

"I have to leave for a business trip. I won't be home tonight."

She sounded rushed.

The call ended.

For the first time, she hung up before I could.

I stared at my reflection, one cuff link still undone.

Then Corey called.

"Guess I'll celebrate with you instead."

Corey drove over and took me to dinner.

When we pulled up outside the restaurant, I reached for the door.

Then froze.

Natalie sat at a table by the window.

Across from her was some guy, maybe twenty-five or twenty-six, dimples flashing when he smiled.

Natalie leaned over and wiped cream from the corner of his mouth with a handkerchief.

She'd done that for me since we were eighteen.

Corey saw them too.

He shoved his door open, ready to storm in.

I grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

"Who the hell is that?"

"I don't know."

Natalie came home around eleven, carrying red roses like she did every anniversary.

After her shower, she wrapped her arms around me from behind and rested her chin on my shoulder.

"Jake, I'm sorry about today. I'll make it up to you."

I closed my eyes.

Two faces overlapped.

Mine.

His.

Split right down the middle.

For the first time in twenty-one years, someone else was in her heart.

After she fell asleep, I unlocked her phone.

The passcode was still my birthday.

She hadn't changed it.

Ryan Leach's chat was pinned at the top.

The messages went back six months.

Work talk had slowly turned casual.

[Received] had turned into [Good night.]

One message from him said:

[I'm in a bad mood today. I want something sweet.]

She replied:

[I'll grab a mille-feuille from the bakery downstairs.]

Another said:

[I tried that restaurant you recommended. Went alone. It wasn't good. Come with me next time.]

The latest message was from tonight.

[Natalie, thanks for spending today with me.]

I set the phone down and lay back.

She rolled over out of habit, curled into my arms, and mumbled in her sleep.

"Who were you with today?"

"A client." She hummed, holding me a little tighter.

I didn't ask again.

The next morning, before she left, she kissed my forehead.

"Honey, I really couldn't get away yesterday. This weekend, let's do a spa getaway."

Her smile hadn't changed.

I looked at her for a second.

"Okay."

After she left, I folded the suit and shoved it to the back of the closet.

Around noon, Corey called to check on me.

The line went quiet for a few seconds.

"Jake, you've been crazy about her since you were seven."

"I know."

"So what are you gonna do?"

I looked out the window.

The sky was clear. Not a cloud in sight.

"I don't know."

On the last night of the exhibition, I stood alone in the center of the gallery.'First Sight' shimmered under the spotlight. On the display card, I'd written one line.[Dedicated to the person I met when I was seven. She lived in my heart for a long time. Then she moved out. Now that room belongs to me.]I stood there for a while, then turned to leave.Outside, it was already dark. The streetlights had just flickered on.In the parking lot, I spotted Natalie's car near the exit. She stood beside it like she'd been there a while.Still in that gray coat.I walked over."Jake.""Yeah.""I saw the exhibition. It was wonderful. I stood in front of that necklace for a long time.""Thank you."After a beat, she spoke again. "Have you been okay this past year?""I have. You?""I'm doing okay."I knew she was lying. She'd lost even more weight. Her cheekbones were sharper, and the light was gone from her eyes. But she'd learned to wear neatly pressed dresses. She'd final

A year later, my solo design show opened. It was called 'Seven.'The collection came from a child's point of view. The curator called it quiet but powerful.A magazine interviewed me and asked about the recurring image of holding hands."It doesn't mean anything. Holding someone's hand is beautiful. But when you can't hold on anymore, you keep walking."After the interview came out, Corey told me Natalie bought a copy of the magazine and kept it on the nightstand—on my old side of the bed.Half her closet was still empty. All her clothes were crammed onto the other side. She refused to put anything where my things used to be.Her assistant said she often sat in her office, staring at her screen. The screen showed our wedding photo."How do you know all this?" I asked Corey."People at the company told me. Her friends are seriously worried. They said she's been a completely different person this whole year.""That's her business."***In November, I went to Southmere to

Corey said a former coworker had seen the whole thing.Natalie called Ryan into her office. The door stayed open, right in front of the whole company."Mr. Leach, effective today, you're fired. Clear out your desk and finish your paperwork by the end of the day."Ryan froze. His eyes went red."Why?""You know why."Ryan started crying. His voice got louder until the whole office could hear.He asked what the beach trip meant. What the tree meant. What that restaurant meant."You said you were going to introduce me to your parents—"Natalie cut him off. "Don't ever show your face around me again."When Corey finished, he looked at me."She really fired him. Everyone said the whole office was stunned.""So?""You really don't feel anything?""What does firing him have to do with me? He was her employee, not mine."The next day, she came to see me.She set a document on my desk.It was Ryan's termination paperwork, signed by him and stamped with the company seal.S

Natalie finally signed the divorce papers. With one condition. She wired me $500,000 and called it compensation for our twenty-one years together.I didn't take it.Then came another request. She wanted to wait three months before the divorce went through, so she could try to win me back. When Corey told me, his voice sounded off."She said she owes you a real courtship. You chased her from age seven to twenty-eight. Now she wants to chase you.""She can do whatever she wants."The flowers showed up the next day.A huge bouquet of red roses blocked the entrance to my studio. The card read:[Day One.]I told the receptionist to send them back.On the third day, another bouquet arrived. The receptionist said she'd already returned the first one, but Natalie had another delivered."What should I do?""Give them to the flower shop next door."The next day, the receptionist passed along a message from the flower shop owner."He said to thank Ms. Dillon. Business has been b

The divorce papers were delivered to her office.I sent them by certified mail.I kept the tracking receipt. She never responded.Corey called. He sounded more anxious than I was."She still hasn't signed?""No.""Did you remind her?""No.""You're really not worried?"I looked out the window. Most of the leaves had already fallen from the linden tree."Corey, the agreement's clear. How long can she put it off?"He was quiet for a moment."I heard she's not doing well. She looks exhausted. She spaces out during meetings, then sits alone in her office until the middle of the night. No one can get her to leave.""That's her problem.""You really don't feel anything for her?"My grip tightened around my phone until my nails dug into my palm."I had surgery. While she was taking pictures of another man at the beach, I was lying alone on an operating table, signing my own consent form. What exactly am I supposed to feel bad about?"The line went dead silent. After a lon

While Natalie was away on a business trip, I went back to collect the rest of my things.I'd already found a new place, packed my boxes, and booked the movers. In three hours, six years were gone.My clothes from the walk-in closet. My books and magazines from the coffee table. The half-finished book from my nightstand. My water glass. My favorite pen.Our marriage license from the drawer. My plate and silverware from the kitchen. The jasmine plant I'd been growing on the balcony.Corey came to help.He stood in the middle of the living room and looked around."You're really leaving all this?""Yeah.""What about the massage chair? You spent months picking that thing out."I looked at it."Too big. Won't fit in the new place."Corey didn't say anything else. Finally, I opened the closet. Her side was still neat and full.Mine held nothing but empty hangers, swaying softly.I left the signed divorce papers on the coffee table. On top, I placed the old bracelet she
