Chapter 2

Author: Fishy Memory
On the day Dad was moved to a regular ward, Juan brought over a care plan.

It was written in great detail. Dad's medication schedules, rehab schedules, dietary restrictions, even the caregiver's shifts were all listed there.

Juan placed the folder on the nightstand. "I asked someone to contact the director of rehabilitation. He'll come for a consultation tomorrow."

Dad had only just woken up. The corner of his mouth was still a little crooked, and his words were slurred. "Juan... Thank you. Too much trouble…for you…"

Juan bent slightly. "Don't worry about anything and rest."

He was flawless. He was proper and attentive, just like a good future son-in-law.

…If Whitney didn't exist.

At noon, Whitney came with a fruit basket. She wore a cream-colored dress. Her face was pale, and a hospital wristband was still around her wrist.

The moment she came in, she looked at Juan first. "Did I come at a bad time?"

Juan put down the glass of water in his hand. "You haven't recovered yet. Why are you here?"

Whitney lowered her head, her voice even lower. "I heard he's finally awake, and I felt guilty. If not for me that day, you wouldn't have..."

She stopped halfway, her eyes red.

My father didn't know what had happened and hurriedly waved his hand. "It's fine. Don't cry."

I stood by the window and watched her put the fruit basket on the table. Inside was a box of blueberries.

Dad couldn't eat them.

Juan glanced at it and explained it on her behalf. "Whitney simply meant well."

I picked up the fruit basket and handed it to the caregiver by the door. "Please, share this with the nurses at their station."

Whitney's expression froze for a second. "Vivian, are you still mad at me?"

Juan looked at me. The look was nothing but a glance, but it was also a warning.

"Don't embarrass her."

I used to fear that look more than anything. I was worried he would think I was immature, and that I was making a fuss over nothing. I had endured it so many times.

When Whitney had a fever in the middle of the night, he abandoned our anniversary dinner.

When Whitney said she was afraid of thunder, he drove across half of Harbor City to keep her company.

When Whitney said, "I'm not used to unfamiliar doctors," he personally arranged therapy for her.

But when I was in the emergency room on an IV because of stomach pain, he only replied with three words.

"Follow medical advice."

I looked at Whitney and said calmly, "I'm not mad at you."

She froze.

Juan also raised his eyes.

I continued, "It's your choice to go to him when something happens. It's his choice to go every time."

The ward went silent.

Whitney bit her lip. "Vivian, I feel awful when you say it like that."

Juan finally spoke. "Enough, Vivian."

His voice wasn't harsh, but it was enough to make Dad look at me.

"Whitney isn't in good health. Don't hurt her with your words." He frowned weakly. "Vivian, don't be stubborn."

My fingertips curled slightly.

So even Dad thought I was being stubborn.

After that, Juan pulled me into the corridor. His fingers closed around my wrist. It wasn't strong, but I couldn't break free all the same.

"Your dad just woke up. Did you have to make trouble in the ward?"

I looked into his eyes. "What did I do?"

"Whitney already apologized," Juan said.

"She apologized so everyone would know she's the one who deserves pity," I said.

Juan's face darkened. "Vivian, you weren't this harsh before."

Of course I wasn't.

In the past, I would find excuses for him. I would tell myself that he was just being too responsible, that he simply couldn't bear to see Whitney break down.

And yet, the light outside the emergency room had shone all night. Some things had become too evident beneath it.

Whitney came out of the ward, leaning against the wall as if she might collapse at any moment. "Juan, my head is a little dizzy."

Juan immediately let go of me and walked to her. He put an arm around her shoulders, and his voice lowered. "I'll take you home."

Then he looked back at me. "Stay here and take care of your dad. Call me if anything happens."

I looked at his hand on Whitney's shoulder, then asked, "If I call, will you answer?"

Juan's brow tightened.

Whitney leaned against his arm and said softly, "Vivian, don't make this hard for him."

I nodded. "Sure."

Juan seemed relieved as he helped Whitney and left together.

When the elevator doors closed at the end of the corridor, I lowered my head and saw the red marks his grip had left on my wrist.

They were very faint.

They would disappear soon, just like the hurt I had carried for years.

No one saw it, and no one cared.

"Every night, I would think of the emergency room. You sat there alone and called me, but I told you not to make it sound too serious," he said before pausing. "Vivian, I didn't come to ask you to get back together with me."I finally looked at him. His eyes were red, but he tried hard to stay calm. "I came to apologize. I'm sorry."I had waited a very long time for those words. I waited so long to the point they were useless. In the end, I just nodded. "Got it."Juan looked as if that sentence had landed hard. He took a small box from his bag and placed it by the fence. "I had the ring changed and the engraving inside was removed. If you don't want it, you can throw it away."I didn't take it. "Juan, stop giving me things."His fingers stiffened."Everything you're doing now is essentially trying to fill the void left from the past," I said softly, "but I'm no longer there."The breeze blew through the garden. It was rare to see so much sunlight in Mistport. Dad had just

Maya, my college roommate, called me after Whitney updated her social media and ranted for half an hour. "What's wrong with her? Did cutting her wrist make her feel superior now?"I had just finished sorting my dad's medicine. "She can do whatever she likes.""Aren't you a little too calm about this?" Maya asked."What else should I do?" I shrugged as I closed the pill organizer. "What she wants isn't my response. She wants Juan to go comfort her."Maya scoffed. "Then she might be disappointed. I heard someone filed a report against Juan during last night's hospital meeting."My hand paused. "What report?""Someone anonymously reported him for repeatedly letting Whitney occupy private rooms and expert resources, which violated hospital rules. There were even records attached. The hospital is investigating it now."I said nothing. I had organized those records before leaving Harbor City, but it wasn't for revenge. I had simply stopped wanting to help them protect their reputati

"You and Whitney picked the invitations. You can ask her to give the explanation," I said.Camila almost choked. "Stop being so sarcastic! Juan has already changed his surgery schedule these past few days just for you, and he looks pretty worn out too. Come back after you've made enough trouble."My voice was impassionate. "If he's worn out, he can ask Whitney to comfort him.""Vivian!" Camila growled, trying to suppress her anger. "With your father in his current state, there will be many expenses later. If you really cut ties with Juan, who'll support you?"My hand paused. So in her eyes, I was marrying Juan just because I wanted to find someone to pay the medical bills. "You don't need to worry," I said."Don't act tough. When you can't manage anymore, you'll still have to come back and beg us, you hear me?" Camila snapped. I hung up after that.Meanwhile, the lawyer replied very quickly.[Ms. Thomas, there are no legal obstacles to ending the engagement. Costs related to

"This place doesn't welcome anyone who isn't here to visit a patient," I said as I looked at Juan.He seemed not to hear me. His eyes fell on my face. "You've lost weight."If I had heard those words before, my heart would probably have softened. But now, I simply found them unnecessary. "Why are you here, Dr. Shaw?" I asked. The formality made his brow frowned. "Don't call me that.""Then what should I call you? Ex-fiance?"His throat gulped. "I've already had someone handle the wedding postponement. It's not canceled. We can talk after you calm down for a few days."I walked past him toward my dad's ward. He extended his hand to stop me. His movement was restrained, only blocking half the way. "Vivian, I admit I didn't handle that day well, but you can't end us with one sentence."I raised my eyes to look at him. "When I waited for you outside the emergency room, no one gave me a second chance."His face paled. "I didn't know it would be that serious.""I told you," I sai

At five twenty in the morning, heavy fog rose over the pier. When I pushed Dad onto the ferry, the caregiver followed behind us with a few bags.Dad still didn't know I was taking him to a rehab center out of the city. He leaned in the wheelchair, his voice slurred. "Vivian, where are we going?"I tucked his scarf around him. "Somewhere quieter to recover."There weren't many people in the cabin. I sat by the window and watched Harbor City's lights slowly disappearing. After I turned my phone on, missed call notifications started popping up. All thirty-seven of them, and all from Juan. There were also messages from Camila. [Vivian, where did you take him? The wedding is in seven days. Stop making a fuss.]Whitney also sent one. [Vivian, Juan looked for you all night. He's very worried. Come back, please.]I turned my phone face down on the table. The caregiver handed me a glass of hot water. "Ms. Thomas, the rehab center has confirmed admission. Dr. Adrian Smith also said he wi

On the day of my dad's follow-up appointment, Juan promised to accompany me to the post-surgery consultation. He said he would be there at ten in the morning. At nine thirty, I pushed the wheelchair and waited at the entrance to the rehab department.Dad was in better spirits. His crooked mouth moved as he asked me, "Is Juan very busy?"I covered his knees with a blanket. "Yes. He's busy."At five minutes past ten, he still was not there. At twenty past ten, the doctor called our number.I called Juan. The first call went unanswered, and the second was declined. On the third call, he finally answered. The background was very quiet, as if he was in a private room. "Vivian, something came up."I looked at the flashing number by the consultation room door. "The doctor's waiting. You have the documents for the follow-up appointment."Last night, he said he was worried I would lose them, so he put them in his briefcase himself. The other end of the call went quiet. "Whitney cut h
