Jealous? Of course not.

At least, that’s what I told myself. But deep down, I had to admit, maybe I was. Just a little bit.

The first thing he did since coming out of the shower was to check on Minnie, then Mickey, not sparing me a glance as if I wasn’t even in the room.

Ashton bent down and kissed me lightly. ‘Don’t worry. You’re still my favourite.’

‘Childish,’ I said, though I couldn’t stop smiling.

Favourite or not, it was nice to hear.

‘Go to sleep,’ he said.

I shifted closer, settled against his chest, and fell asleep.

Sometime in the night, I vaguely heard Minnie cry. But after one short wail, the sound stopped.

I blinked my eyes open just a little and saw Ashton holding our daughter while talking on the phone, asking the night nurse to bring in the bottle she’d just prepared.

I meant to keep watching, but I was too tired and drifted ba

I sighed, shoulders slumping. ‘Forget it. Why am I even asking you? Still, even if I’m not a great mum right now, I’ll work on it.’Mickey just kept staring at me calmly, silent as ever.I smiled, picked him up, and gave him a gentle cuddle. After a while, the bedroom door opened and Ashton came in, holding a freshly changed Minnie in his arms.I set Mickey back down and turned to him. ‘Let me hold her too.’Ashton hesitated for a second, studying me, but said nothing. He stepped forward and handed the baby over.‘Minnie, it’s Mummy,’ I said softly, taking her into my arms. The next second came a wail.My face fell instantly.‘Minnie, I’m your mum, I gave birth to you. How can you not let me hold you?’‘Waaah!’I stared down at her, stunned.‘Better let me take her,’ Ashton said with a sigh. He lifted her

The following days passed quietly.I rested in the ward, and whenever I had the energy, I went to see Maple and Captain Crunch. It turned out Ashton had been right. Every time I visited, if I didn’t focus on Captain Crunch, she’d start crying. I had no choice but to stay close to her, while poor Maple was left on his own.Every time I went back to the ward, guilt settled in again. I felt like I was failing my son.A week later, when my body had recovered enough and the twins were stable, we were discharged and went home.Once we moved into the villa, things became even more obvious. The moment we ignored her, Captain Crunch would burst into loud, dramatic wailing. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Maple, who was calm and quiet no matter what, so I naturally fussed over him more.Ashton, however, always picked up his daughter first. Captain Crunch would rest contentedly in his arms, smiling with pure satisfaction.

The babies were lying in their little incubators, still fast asleep. The room was calm and still. Even Ashton’s footsteps softened the moment we entered. We stood there together, new parents staring down at our tiny children, completely transfixed.‘Which one’s Maple and which one’s Captain Crunch?’ I whispered. We’d agreed the older one was to be Maple.‘That’s Maple,’ Ashton replied, his voice low.Maple was… a boy.He was sleeping, his tiny fists curled up beside his face, like he was posing. He looked so small, so innocent. My heart melted just looking at him.So this was the baby that had come from me.Seeing him up close was nothing like seeing him on a screen. I couldn’t stop smiling as I reached out and gently tapped the glass near his face. Just looking at him filled me with contentment.Suddenly, the other baby let out a loud, sharp cry.

A loud cry echoed through the room.I felt my stomach loosen. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked at the tiny baby the midwife was holding up by the feet. After that first cry, the nurse laid the baby flat and carried it off to be cleaned.I opened my mouth to speak, but another wave of pain hit me.I’d almost forgotten there was another one.The second baby came even faster than the first, almost in the blink of an eye. It was carried off to be cleaned too.I was completely drained, slumped where I lay while the midwife worked.Something felt off though, as if something was missing.I pushed myself up slightly and turned my head to see. Then I realised what it was. When the babies had been born, Ashton hadn’t said a word. I saw him standing there like he was in a daze, not moving at all.‘Ash.’ My voice was so weak it was barely a whisper. His whole body jolted, and his eyes cleared. He crouched at my side and took my hand without speaking.I didn’t have the energy to talk. The deliv

I was frightened too.But remembering what the doctor had told me, I shook my head. ‘No. Natural birth is better for the babies.’‘That’s right,’ the midwife said reassuringly. ‘It’s better for the babies, and it helps your body recover faster too. Don’t worry, Mrs Laurent. That other case was an exception. The baby was oversized and should’ve been delivered surgically from the start, but the family refused. Since you’re having twins, both are actually smaller than the usual size. You’ll be fine.’She was an experienced woman in her forties, with a kind, calm face. Her words reassured me slightly. I nodded heavily.I could do this. I would get through it.‘No. You’re in too much pain,’ Ashton said.‘Don’t worry. I can handle it.’ The pain was still there, but the determination to bring my babies safely into the world had taken over. My eyes steadied. ‘I’ll deliver them naturally. Help me up. I need to walk.’Ashton’s expression showed he didn’t agree. The midwife spoke again. ‘A C-sec
