LOGINDove POV
Pepper and herb scented smoke wafts up from the pan as I watch the slab of steak sizzle in the butter. The front door opens, a billow of cool air joining my sister as she rushes in. She tugs her coat off, bracing it on the hook next to mine before she plucks her boots off her feet. "Hey Dovey," she greets warmly, her cheeks tinged pink from the night air. After not staying late with Matthias, I rushed home to work on dinner. The smell of it is cloying in our tiny cottage, where the kitchen is cramped tightly into the corner, in the same room as the living space and tiny circle dining room table. "Hey." I flip the steak. "Your plate is in the oven." "Bless you. I'm starved." She rushes over, kissing me on the cheek before she opens the oven door, stepping back as a wave of torrid heat pours out. With a dish cloth in hand she grabs the edge of her plate, guiding it to the table. As usual Eden is dressed in her stiff work uniform. Tawny brown trousers and a collared plum shirt. She works at the train station just over down the hill and past the creek, the tracks leading deep into Alpha Varian's pack. Despite both being in our twenties, Eden and I are yet to move out. We both know our father would struggle without us — I mean, he's still deep in meetings with Matthias at this late hour "You need to eat breakfast instead of skipping it all the time." I cast her a long look as she digs into her green beans. She shrugs. "I'm never hungry in the mornings." I pluck the steak up with a pair of tongs, placing it on a wooden cutting board to rest. "Maybe you're pregnant," I tease. "Ugh, please." Her nose scrunches up in disgust. "At least I'm getting laid, unlike you, Miss Virgin." I turn away, swallowing thickly. No one knows about Matthias's relationship, nor that it's been going on for over a year and a half. It feels embarrassing to speak about, even to my sister. She would tell me I'm too good to be an Alpha's plaything with no real benefit, and she would be right... At least there is no concern about me falling pregnant. Matthias would rather castrate himself than have me become with child. The thought would hurt, but I'm addicted to the feeling of doing something so forbidden. It's so wrong, but it feels sodeliciously right. "Don't tell father that. He'll gut whatever poor soul you've lured into bed," I bring up, stalking over to the one window this cottage has, propping it open for some ventilation. "It's only one person, actually," she says, a hint more quietly. "And father will never know. I'm planning on moving out soon." I raise a brow. "Oh yeah?" "I can't stay in this stuffy cottage with you and dad forever, no offense." She drags a cut of steak around the butter sauce on her plate. "You may like it here, but I'm destined for more." Eden is capable of anything. She's beautiful, charismatic and talented. She hasn't encountered a single skill she hasn't been able to master, and yet actively chooses to condemn herself to a dead end job so she isn't forced to move away from her family. "It's not that I like it here, I just don't want to abandon him. He lost two wives,"remember?" I bring up. Father insists Eden looks just like her mother, and I believe it. Her pale hair and deep brown eyes are unlike any feature father and I have. Her skin is littered with light freckles, and her features are softer and rounder than mine. Her mother died before I was born. My father then had me with my mother, who took off with all his money when I was two. Mercifully I was only passed down her nose and not much else. I share my dark, rich brown hair and blue eyes with my father. "I guess so." Eden's expression curls with disgust as I sit down at the table with my plate of food, pouring hot sauce onto my steak. "Yuck, I could never put that spicy stuff on my food." I shrug. "Don't then." Eden picks up the days paper off the table, flipping it open. The front page catches my attention, the vivid illustrationmaking my mouth dry. "Woah..." "What?" Eden flips the paper, scanning the front. "Oh, Alpha Varian's wicked party." The illustration is of the front of his grand palace. It depicts vibrant red lights and lines of people that will no doubt be queuing for the experience later tonight. "That's tonight, right?" I bring up casually, as if I'm not very much aware. For the rest of my shift since seeing Matthias, I've convinced myself to both attend and not attend the party. On one hand, venturing into Alpha Varian's pack, into a swarm of dubious minded people would be dangerous. Matthias said himself that members of his pack are targeted and seduced into staying. How true that is, it's hard to tell. What I do know is that if Matthias knew, it would be over between us. I would be sabotaging the scraps of a relationship we've maintained over the past year and a half. Which is all the more reason why I want to go... He doesn't own me. I'm not tied to him. I can't be expected to give my entire being to a relationship that he only contributes to at his leisure. I want to do something for myself, something fun and forbidden. "How should I know?" Eden grumbles, then pauses. "But yes, it is." "Matthias — people at work were talking about it." I clear my throat, concentrating on my mountain of mashed potatoes. "Everyone in every pack in the land is invited. Even from here," she explains, scanning the text on the front page. "It's all crap though. Apparently his guards turn away most that come to the door." I lightly tap the tines of my fork against my plate as I think. My chances of getting in tonight are slim I'm not the kind of person who would fit into that environment.Dove pov In one smooth thrust, he's inside me all of the way. It was only a few weeks ago that he was having to work himself inside me slowly, trying not to hurt me. Now, he knows what I can handle.I moan, my eyes closing instinctively so I can feel every inch of pleasure he is affording me. He quickly jostles my head with his hand, tugging my attention back on him."Move in with me," he says softly, withdrawing all the way before thrusting into me again.I reach my hands up to his shoulders, digging my fingers into the muscle there."Varian..."He dips his head to pepper my face with kisses until my skin is damp. All while he gently presses in and out of me, holding my pleasure hostage, everything remain securely in his control."Move in with me, and you won't even have to get out of bed to have this." He thrusts particularly deep, forcing a every day, multiple times a day."The thought of that almost makes me climax. His breathing turns uneven as I clench around him, unable to hel
Dove povI immediately rush at him."Are you okay, are you hurt?" I grab him, running my hand along his dampened, grimy skin. I can't see any wounds or injuries, but who knows what could be going on under his clothing. He looks at me, his usually warm brown eyes almost black. They are so wide, so frightened, having seen something terrible."I don't...know.""Come in here, you look exhausted." I or perhaps trembling. Either way, I don't think it is the cold causing it."I'll get him some water," Varian exclaims, rushing into the kitchen."I haven't slept," Dev says vacantly as we sit together on the couch. I pull his coat off his shoulders, feeling the grittiness of dirt under my fingertips. My relief at having my friend returned safely is dimmed knowing he's clearly been through a lot, and is practically catatonic because of it."Where were you? What happened?" I take his hands into mine. His fingers are terribly cold."He took me," he whispers."Took you? Who?""Kalin."I draw in a b
Dove povI tell Varian everything.Him and Ida patiently listen as I run through the events of the evening, although I skip the part where Matthias kissed me. Varian is angry enough that I risked going there — I figure I better not poke the slumbering beast within him. It's clear that my decision to go to Matthias for answers has upset him, but he pushes it aside to ensure I'm okay. The moment I finish explaining the story, a wave of exhaustion from my many days of not sleeping strikes me. I fall asleep in Varian's arms as he carries me upstairs, and don't wake until the next afternoon. The moment I wake, I'm greeted by Varian with his brows furrowed and his eyes heavy with worry. He sits while I eat in bed, his thumbnail between his teeth.I know I shouldn't have been impulsive, but when it comes to Dev, there isn't much I don't want to do.After I've eaten, I fall back into another deep slumber. When I wake next, Varian's room is dark, but he is still there, sitting on a chair lookin
Dove povOh shit."No..." I say quickly.Matthias angles his head, suspicion and anger intermingling on his face. He definitely hasn't heard the rumours, which means they haven't reached this pack yet. That, or someone close to him knows that their Alpha wouldn't be pleased to learn this information."Dove, tell me Varian isn't your mate." His voice is so quiet I almost miss it. There is no mistaking his rage though. A blue vein has suddenly become visible on the left side of his forehead."No, of course he's not," I bluster. "A rumour is going around that he is, and I figured you might have heard about it."His eyes narrow. "Why would that rumour go around?""Someone found out about the mark he left on me, and has assumed it is because him and I are mated. They are wrong, though," I explain quickly, almost stumbling over my words in my desperation to get them out.I hope he is buying this. It's clear now that he didn't hear the rumour, and Dev isn't here. Now, I need to concentrate on
Dove povI sit on my couch, chewing on what little is left of my thumbnail.I barely know what time it is. The sun came up a while ago, the cool melding into warmth. I haven't bothered to sleep, especially with messengers coming in and out of this house, bringing me new information. As soon as I realised what may have happened to Dev, I went straight to Varian, but he already left yesterday to travel to a nearby city for business. He's already on his way back to me.Something has happened to Dev. I know it...The front door slams open suddenly, the sound so loud I gasp. My sister rushes in, her expression stricken, followed by her wife."We came as soon as we got your message." Eden reaches for me as I stand, enveloping me in a hug.I nestle my face into her shoulder, emotion I've been pressing down rushing suddenly to the surface. I've been so concerned with covering all my bases that I haven't stopped to think about what it truly means for my friend to be missing.Every part of me is
Dove povI wake to the scent of Varian everywhere.Stretching my limbs out, I yawn, turning my head to see my mate stirring next to me.Despite having gone to bed so late after the ball, I feel surprisingly refreshed. The moment I slipped into bed and melted into Varian's arms, I fell asleep quickly.I smile gently as I watch him wake, warm rays of sunlight passing drowsily across his face. He's so soft and dozy when he wakes, his expression slack and unworried.I wish he could be like that all the time, without the burden of being Alpha on his shoulders."Morning," I whisper hoarsely. He turns his head to face me, dark hair all soft and messy against his face. I roll onto my side, so I can admire him closer."Sleep well?" His voice is rough and unused."That's the best I've slept in a long time," I admit. I can still feel the vague pull of fatigue, but only because it was already nearing on dawn by the time I closed my eyes. Now, I estimate it's close to midday. Thankfully, no one has

Dove Pov"I wonder who they let in," I mumble absentmindedly."Anyone who fits the theme, who dresses scantily and has no respect for themselves." Eden opens the newspaper again, the corners flopping over.Tilting my head ever so slightly, I attempt to read the small text. I want as much informatio
Dove Pov"Right." He shakes his head a little. "I also forgot to mention one small matter.""What?" I steady the precariously balanced tower of folded clothing that I've been continuously adding to. If it tipped over, it may very well be my last straw."I shall be looking for someone to marry very
