MasukDove POV
Pepper and herb scented smoke wafts up from the pan as I watch the slab of steak sizzle in the butter. The front door opens, a billow of cool air joining my sister as she rushes in. She tugs her coat off, bracing it on the hook next to mine before she plucks her boots off her feet. "Hey Dovey," she greets warmly, her cheeks tinged pink from the night air. After not staying late with Matthias, I rushed home to work on dinner. The smell of it is cloying in our tiny cottage, where the kitchen is cramped tightly into the corner, in the same room as the living space and tiny circle dining room table. "Hey." I flip the steak. "Your plate is in the oven." "Bless you. I'm starved." She rushes over, kissing me on the cheek before she opens the oven door, stepping back as a wave of torrid heat pours out. With a dish cloth in hand she grabs the edge of her plate, guiding it to the table. As usual Eden is dressed in her stiff work uniform. Tawny brown trousers and a collared plum shirt. She works at the train station just over down the hill and past the creek, the tracks leading deep into Alpha Varian's pack. Despite both being in our twenties, Eden and I are yet to move out. We both know our father would struggle without us — I mean, he's still deep in meetings with Matthias at this late hour "You need to eat breakfast instead of skipping it all the time." I cast her a long look as she digs into her green beans. She shrugs. "I'm never hungry in the mornings." I pluck the steak up with a pair of tongs, placing it on a wooden cutting board to rest. "Maybe you're pregnant," I tease. "Ugh, please." Her nose scrunches up in disgust. "At least I'm getting laid, unlike you, Miss Virgin." I turn away, swallowing thickly. No one knows about Matthias's relationship, nor that it's been going on for over a year and a half. It feels embarrassing to speak about, even to my sister. She would tell me I'm too good to be an Alpha's plaything with no real benefit, and she would be right... At least there is no concern about me falling pregnant. Matthias would rather castrate himself than have me become with child. The thought would hurt, but I'm addicted to the feeling of doing something so forbidden. It's so wrong, but it feels sodeliciously right. "Don't tell father that. He'll gut whatever poor soul you've lured into bed," I bring up, stalking over to the one window this cottage has, propping it open for some ventilation. "It's only one person, actually," she says, a hint more quietly. "And father will never know. I'm planning on moving out soon." I raise a brow. "Oh yeah?" "I can't stay in this stuffy cottage with you and dad forever, no offense." She drags a cut of steak around the butter sauce on her plate. "You may like it here, but I'm destined for more." Eden is capable of anything. She's beautiful, charismatic and talented. She hasn't encountered a single skill she hasn't been able to master, and yet actively chooses to condemn herself to a dead end job so she isn't forced to move away from her family. "It's not that I like it here, I just don't want to abandon him. He lost two wives,"remember?" I bring up. Father insists Eden looks just like her mother, and I believe it. Her pale hair and deep brown eyes are unlike any feature father and I have. Her skin is littered with light freckles, and her features are softer and rounder than mine. Her mother died before I was born. My father then had me with my mother, who took off with all his money when I was two. Mercifully I was only passed down her nose and not much else. I share my dark, rich brown hair and blue eyes with my father. "I guess so." Eden's expression curls with disgust as I sit down at the table with my plate of food, pouring hot sauce onto my steak. "Yuck, I could never put that spicy stuff on my food." I shrug. "Don't then." Eden picks up the days paper off the table, flipping it open. The front page catches my attention, the vivid illustrationmaking my mouth dry. "Woah..." "What?" Eden flips the paper, scanning the front. "Oh, Alpha Varian's wicked party." The illustration is of the front of his grand palace. It depicts vibrant red lights and lines of people that will no doubt be queuing for the experience later tonight. "That's tonight, right?" I bring up casually, as if I'm not very much aware. For the rest of my shift since seeing Matthias, I've convinced myself to both attend and not attend the party. On one hand, venturing into Alpha Varian's pack, into a swarm of dubious minded people would be dangerous. Matthias said himself that members of his pack are targeted and seduced into staying. How true that is, it's hard to tell. What I do know is that if Matthias knew, it would be over between us. I would be sabotaging the scraps of a relationship we've maintained over the past year and a half. Which is all the more reason why I want to go... He doesn't own me. I'm not tied to him. I can't be expected to give my entire being to a relationship that he only contributes to at his leisure. I want to do something for myself, something fun and forbidden. "How should I know?" Eden grumbles, then pauses. "But yes, it is." "Matthias — people at work were talking about it." I clear my throat, concentrating on my mountain of mashed potatoes. "Everyone in every pack in the land is invited. Even from here," she explains, scanning the text on the front page. "It's all crap though. Apparently his guards turn away most that come to the door." I lightly tap the tines of my fork against my plate as I think. My chances of getting in tonight are slim I'm not the kind of person who would fit into that environment.Dove povVarian slowly releases his grip on my hair, his gaze trained on my mouth.I can sense his control slipping, melting away with the hot water beating down on our skin. He's right, we need to talk, but that can come later, after we've enjoyed each other."How do you think you're going to convince me, love?" He asks, brushing droplets of water from my cheekbone with his finger. My mind whirls with ideas. I land on one, the moment my eyes dip down to between his legs, where I can see the extent of his desire for me.I lean up on my tiptoes, bringing my mouth to his ear. "Like this."My hand travels down his chest, sweeping over the hard ridges of his abdomen, and to where his cock stands against his stomach. He watches my tentative hand wrap around the base of him, feeling the solidness of his arousal. A shuddering breath rushes from his mouth, his muscles tensing."We should really talk, Dove," he grits out, while I tighten my grip on his cock, shifting my hand up and down slowly
Dove povI smother my face with my hands, wishing I could scream. It was stupid and impulsive of me to come here. I let my want for revenge against my father and Matthias overcome me, and now I get to listen to my mate pleasure a woman right above me because of it.Instead I hear Varian sigh, his voice lowering. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to forgo that tonight, Penelope."I angle my head, listening keenly. Is he really rejecting her? I can't help the spark of hope in my chest. I may not be willing to admit it right now, but if he did bed her, it would destroy me.We may not have any real relationship, but he's still my mate...if the physician is to be believed."What...why?" Penelope's voice sounds empty and hollow, and a touch hurt."I am no longer interested in those pursuits," Varian explains. My smile falls away as quickly as it raises. I'm not exactly displeased to hear Varian turning this woman away, but I can't be sure it's because of his bond with me. Perhaps he is finally t
Dove povI stare into Dev's mirror set up, feeling like a complete and utter fool.Despite agreeing to come to this party, I feel like an imposter. I'm sitting somewhere deep inside Varian's manor with all of the performers, watching Dev prepare himself. My mate is somewhere upstairs right now. He's somewhere beyond the thumping music and cheers from intoxicated partygoers.I'm here to see him. I'm not sure what I plan to say to him, but I want to see him one last time.Dev leans closer to the mirror, adjusting his false eyelashes. He's spared no expense in creating the most incredible look for tonight. He's outdone everyone in the room, and from the snide glares he's receiving, they all know it."You're so good at that," I marvel as he continues to fuss with his makeup. It's already perfection, so I'm uncertain what else there is to do.But Dev is a perfectionist, and could preen all day if he could."It's years of experience," he murmurs, pulling away so he can peer at me in the seat
Dove pov The mid-morning sun warms my skin as I stroll down the street with Dev beside me.The city is calm this morning. People mull about, enjoying the warmth and the day off of work. It's a day of celebration in this pack as many turn to worship an old god that I thought we'd forgotten about by now."We should go on a holiday," I tell Dev.We're heading to get some coffee, then go for a walk around the park. I've been trying to keep my mind occupied since finding out I'm mated to Varian.I still can't entirely believe it.It's been weeks since I saw him, and he hasn't tried to confront me in person, honouring my request for space. I've been trying to banish him from my mind, not wanting to give the notion much thought.Being mated to an Alpha isn't something I'm ready for. Not one from another pack, who I can barely stand.I just need to get over the thought, and move on. I don't need a mate...not really. I always thought one would be nice to have, but I'm going to have to accept t
Dove povSteeling myself, I slowly lift up my skirt a few inches until the mark on my thigh is revealed to the physician. He takes it in, pausing for a moment."Oh...Varian, this is your mark," the physician marvels, confusion furrowing his brow. "I thought you were having her remove a mark so you could mark there."I roll my eyes, shaking my head."Dove does not want to bear my mark, and that's being honoured," he says tightly, giving me an apologetic look that I scowl at."Very well, but you should know that a connection to an Alpha is rare and strong. It will be much harder to break," the physician says casually.I straighten. "Are you serious?"This is only getting worse the longer I'm sitting here. Lucky for Varian, he looks just as surprised about this, which assures me at the very least, he hasn't marked anyone before.Varian tightens his grip on my shoulder, looking down at me. "Do you still wish to go on with the procedure?"I face ahead. Varian has lost his mind if he thinks
Dove povShielding my eyes against the weakening late afternoon sun, I stalk outside.I'm utterly exhausted. I've been studying for the test I just sat all week, all while recovering from Ciella's wedding last weekend.A friend from class emerges out beside me, stuffing his books into his backpack. He's been helping me with catch up on some classes I missed when I couldn't get out of work."How do you think you did on the test?" He asks, slinging the bag over his shoulder.I sigh, tipping my head back. This is the last of my study, which means I'm being confronted by my future. I want to focus on politics, but doing in my own pack means encountering Matthias again. That thought is haunting..."Okay, hopefully," I respond tightly, flexing the muscles in neck in an effort to stretch them. "I don't tend to test well."David nudges me. "And yet you're the smartest in the class.""Not really. I only do well because of what my father taught me," I explain. "You'd be shocked at how far practi
Dove Pov"I wonder who they let in," I mumble absentmindedly."Anyone who fits the theme, who dresses scantily and has no respect for themselves." Eden opens the newspaper again, the corners flopping over.Tilting my head ever so slightly, I attempt to read the small text. I want as much informatio
Dove Pov"Right." He shakes his head a little. "I also forgot to mention one small matter.""What?" I steady the precariously balanced tower of folded clothing that I've been continuously adding to. If it tipped over, it may very well be my last straw."I shall be looking for someone to marry very
