I sit cross-legged on my bed, mindlessly pulling at a stray thread on my patchwork quilt. Eden sits with her back to me, preening herself in the mirror of her vanity. Night has well and truly fallen, and instead of grumbling at Eden to snuff out the gaslit lamp, I'm sitting up, biding my time. I'm attending the party tonight. I cannot be swayed otherwise. "You alright?" I ask my sister as she threads her blonde hair into a braid behind her. She's been sat at that vanity for an inordinate amount of time. Her smooth skin glistens beneath the light, every errant hair plucked, every blemish treated with some creamy concoction. "Why wouldn't I be?" She asks, finally pulling herself from the mirror. Her gauzy nightdress sighs as she clambers onto her bed, the old cot creaking from her movement. She settles beneath the sheets, placing her frayed, threadbare stuffed teddy on her chest. "You seem anxious," I observe. "Plus you've been smothering my creams onto yourself all night." "I want to feel pretty," she muses, staring up at the ceiling. I stare at the side of her face, wondering what it would feel like to be as beautiful as she is. I've never been jealous of my half-sister until I got a bit older, realising she seems to have the world at her fingertips while there isn't much in front of me."For a man?" I ask tentatively. He turns her head to look at me before she laughs huffily. "Oh please. You of all people should know not to say that." True I suppose. Eden has never had much of an interest in impressing people. Whoever she is seeing must be special if they enticed her to commit to them. I'm assuming she's preparing to sneak out tonight to meet with this mysterious person as she does often. Usually she's transparent with me, not wanting to frighten me when she picks her way from the room. "I'm just checking." I wiggle deeper under the covers. "Like dad always says, don't get pregnant." "Trust me, that's not going to happen." She twists her finger around the tuft of hair at the end of her braid. "I would give you the same warning, but unfortunately I can't." "Unfortunately?" "I just feel like there's a whole world youseem to have no interest in exploring. People you have no interest in meeting..." Her brows knot with concern. I stare up at the ceiling, resting my hands on my stomach. I've always been a restless person, yearning for more than what life has offered me so far. Complaining about my situation, however, has never felt productive, so my sister is left not understanding a big part of me. "It's not that I have no interest, it's that I want to make sure our father is looked after," I bring up quietly. "He's a grown man, and not half as fragile as you think," she notes. "He might be upset if we move out and start our lives elsewhere, but he would quickly get over it." Maybe, but not if it meant forgoing the values he holds so dear. "I don't want him in that job forever. It's going to kill him." I roll onto my side, watching Eden fluff her stuffed teddy bears ears. I would tell Matthias to fire him, but he's too greatly valued. Plus my father wouldn't know what to do with himself were he not in the centre of this pack's politics. "It's stressful, but he's a good war advisor. A great one." "I know..." I murmur. "Remember last week when he said he felt like something was coming, and Matthias dismissed him?" I asked Matthias about it and he dismissed me abruptly enough for me to know he's anticipating something. My nerves are fried not knowing, since he usually imparts his problems onto me with ease. "Alpha Matthias, by the way. You need to get better at speaking his title or you'll get dad in trouble," she scolds, narrowing her soft brown eyes. "Sorry, I know." I clear my throat. "I'm just saying father is stressed, and Alpha"Matthias isn't taking his warnings seriously." "Nothing bad is coming, don't worry. You know how dad overthinks." Eden is disturbingly good at brushing things off. She doesn't stew in worry like I do. Were I not anxiously anticipating the party, I would be lying in bed with the weight of my problems pressing down on my chest. "I guess so. We should probably get some sleep," I murmur. She leans over, flicking off the lamp, dousing the room in a comfortable darkness. "I love you, Dove." Eden's voice fills the room, easing my heartrate down to a comfortable pace. "I love you too." Seconds, minutes, or perhaps even hours pass by. For a while I thrum my fingers against my stomach, listening to Eden's gentle breaths. However, like most nights, they lull me into a light slumber... I wake with a start. The room is still dark. Tossing my comforter off my legs, I lean over to click the lamp back on. My eyes ache from the abrupt cascade of light, but a couple of blinks eases my sight back. Eden's bed is empty, her duvet neatly folded back into place. Glancing at the clock, I realise it's only an hour and a half until midnight. "Eden?" I call out softly, my voice sounding painfully loud against the pleasant quietness of night. I doubt she's just gone to the bathroom. She must have left to meet up with her lover like I suspected she has, giving me a chance to prepare. My muscles are tightly wound with energy as I stand, wincing at the familiar creak of the floorboards. If father wakes and finds me dressing for a party, I'll be in a world of trouble.Dove pov In one smooth thrust, he's inside me all of the way. It was only a few weeks ago that he was having to work himself inside me slowly, trying not to hurt me. Now, he knows what I can handle.I moan, my eyes closing instinctively so I can feel every inch of pleasure he is affording me. He quickly jostles my head with his hand, tugging my attention back on him."Move in with me," he says softly, withdrawing all the way before thrusting into me again.I reach my hands up to his shoulders, digging my fingers into the muscle there."Varian..."He dips his head to pepper my face with kisses until my skin is damp. All while he gently presses in and out of me, holding my pleasure hostage, everything remain securely in his control."Move in with me, and you won't even have to get out of bed to have this." He thrusts particularly deep, forcing a every day, multiple times a day."The thought of that almost makes me climax. His breathing turns uneven as I clench around him, unable to hel
Dove povI immediately rush at him."Are you okay, are you hurt?" I grab him, running my hand along his dampened, grimy skin. I can't see any wounds or injuries, but who knows what could be going on under his clothing. He looks at me, his usually warm brown eyes almost black. They are so wide, so frightened, having seen something terrible."I don't...know.""Come in here, you look exhausted." I or perhaps trembling. Either way, I don't think it is the cold causing it."I'll get him some water," Varian exclaims, rushing into the kitchen."I haven't slept," Dev says vacantly as we sit together on the couch. I pull his coat off his shoulders, feeling the grittiness of dirt under my fingertips. My relief at having my friend returned safely is dimmed knowing he's clearly been through a lot, and is practically catatonic because of it."Where were you? What happened?" I take his hands into mine. His fingers are terribly cold."He took me," he whispers."Took you? Who?""Kalin."I draw in a b
Dove povI tell Varian everything.Him and Ida patiently listen as I run through the events of the evening, although I skip the part where Matthias kissed me. Varian is angry enough that I risked going there — I figure I better not poke the slumbering beast within him. It's clear that my decision to go to Matthias for answers has upset him, but he pushes it aside to ensure I'm okay. The moment I finish explaining the story, a wave of exhaustion from my many days of not sleeping strikes me. I fall asleep in Varian's arms as he carries me upstairs, and don't wake until the next afternoon. The moment I wake, I'm greeted by Varian with his brows furrowed and his eyes heavy with worry. He sits while I eat in bed, his thumbnail between his teeth.I know I shouldn't have been impulsive, but when it comes to Dev, there isn't much I don't want to do.After I've eaten, I fall back into another deep slumber. When I wake next, Varian's room is dark, but he is still there, sitting on a chair lookin
Dove povOh shit."No..." I say quickly.Matthias angles his head, suspicion and anger intermingling on his face. He definitely hasn't heard the rumours, which means they haven't reached this pack yet. That, or someone close to him knows that their Alpha wouldn't be pleased to learn this information."Dove, tell me Varian isn't your mate." His voice is so quiet I almost miss it. There is no mistaking his rage though. A blue vein has suddenly become visible on the left side of his forehead."No, of course he's not," I bluster. "A rumour is going around that he is, and I figured you might have heard about it."His eyes narrow. "Why would that rumour go around?""Someone found out about the mark he left on me, and has assumed it is because him and I are mated. They are wrong, though," I explain quickly, almost stumbling over my words in my desperation to get them out.I hope he is buying this. It's clear now that he didn't hear the rumour, and Dev isn't here. Now, I need to concentrate on
Dove povI sit on my couch, chewing on what little is left of my thumbnail.I barely know what time it is. The sun came up a while ago, the cool melding into warmth. I haven't bothered to sleep, especially with messengers coming in and out of this house, bringing me new information. As soon as I realised what may have happened to Dev, I went straight to Varian, but he already left yesterday to travel to a nearby city for business. He's already on his way back to me.Something has happened to Dev. I know it...The front door slams open suddenly, the sound so loud I gasp. My sister rushes in, her expression stricken, followed by her wife."We came as soon as we got your message." Eden reaches for me as I stand, enveloping me in a hug.I nestle my face into her shoulder, emotion I've been pressing down rushing suddenly to the surface. I've been so concerned with covering all my bases that I haven't stopped to think about what it truly means for my friend to be missing.Every part of me is
Dove povI wake to the scent of Varian everywhere.Stretching my limbs out, I yawn, turning my head to see my mate stirring next to me.Despite having gone to bed so late after the ball, I feel surprisingly refreshed. The moment I slipped into bed and melted into Varian's arms, I fell asleep quickly.I smile gently as I watch him wake, warm rays of sunlight passing drowsily across his face. He's so soft and dozy when he wakes, his expression slack and unworried.I wish he could be like that all the time, without the burden of being Alpha on his shoulders."Morning," I whisper hoarsely. He turns his head to face me, dark hair all soft and messy against his face. I roll onto my side, so I can admire him closer."Sleep well?" His voice is rough and unused."That's the best I've slept in a long time," I admit. I can still feel the vague pull of fatigue, but only because it was already nearing on dawn by the time I closed my eyes. Now, I estimate it's close to midday. Thankfully, no one has
Dove Pov"I wonder who they let in," I mumble absentmindedly."Anyone who fits the theme, who dresses scantily and has no respect for themselves." Eden opens the newspaper again, the corners flopping over.Tilting my head ever so slightly, I attempt to read the small text. I want as much informatio
Dove Pov"Right." He shakes his head a little. "I also forgot to mention one small matter.""What?" I steady the precariously balanced tower of folded clothing that I've been continuously adding to. If it tipped over, it may very well be my last straw."I shall be looking for someone to marry very
Dove povLaundry bag slung over my shoulder, I cross the room.My muscle ache, fatigue burdening each step I make. Dumping the ample bag into the tub, I watch the wave of laundry topple out before I pour a bucket of cold water in after it.Unsurprisingly I'm on laundry duty once again while my cowo
Dove POVPepper and herb scented smoke wafts up from the pan as I watch the slab of steak sizzle in the butter. The front door opens, a billow of cool air joining my sister as she rushes in. She tugs her coat off, bracing it on the hook next to mine before she plucks her boots off her feet."Hey Do
