Dove pov

I sit cross-legged on my bed, mindlessly pulling at a stray thread on my patchwork quilt.

Eden sits with her back to me, preening herself in the mirror of her vanity.

Night has well and truly fallen, and instead of grumbling at Eden to snuff out the gaslit lamp, I'm sitting up, biding my time.

I'm attending the party tonight. I cannot be swayed otherwise.

"You alright?" I ask my sister as she threads her blonde hair into a braid behind her. She's been sat at that vanity for an inordinate amount of time. Her smooth skin glistens beneath the light, every errant hair plucked, every blemish treated with some creamy concoction.

"Why wouldn't I be?" She asks, finally pulling herself from the mirror.

Her gauzy nightdress sighs as she clambers onto her bed, the old cot creaking from her movement. She settles beneath the sheets, placing her frayed, threadbare stuffed teddy on her chest.

"You seem anxious," I observe. "Plus you've been smothering my creams onto yourself all night."

"I want to feel pretty," she muses, staring up at the ceiling.

I stare at the side of her face, wondering what it would feel like to be as beautiful as she is. I've never been jealous of my half-sister until I got a bit older, realising she seems to have the world at her fingertips while there isn't much in front of me."For a man?" I ask tentatively.

He turns her head to look at me before she laughs huffily. "Oh please. You of all people should know not to say that."

True I suppose. Eden has never had much of an interest in impressing people. Whoever she is seeing must be special if they enticed her to commit to them.

I'm assuming she's preparing to sneak out tonight to meet with this mysterious person as she does often. Usually she's transparent with me, not wanting to frighten me when she picks her way from the room.

"I'm just checking." I wiggle deeper under the covers. "Like dad always says, don't get pregnant."

"Trust me, that's not going to happen." She twists her finger around the tuft of hair at the end of her braid. "I would give you the same warning, but unfortunately I can't."

"Unfortunately?"

"I just feel like there's a whole world youseem to have no interest in exploring. People you have no interest in meeting..." Her brows knot with concern.

I stare up at the ceiling, resting my hands on my stomach.

I've always been a restless person, yearning for more than what life has offered me so far. Complaining about my situation, however, has never felt productive, so my sister is left not understanding a big part of me.

"It's not that I have no interest, it's that I want to make sure our father is looked after," I bring up quietly.

"He's a grown man, and not half as fragile as you think," she notes. "He might be upset if we move out and start our lives elsewhere, but he would quickly get over it."

Maybe, but not if it meant forgoing the values he holds so dear.

"I don't want him in that job forever. It's going to kill him." I roll onto my side, watching Eden fluff her stuffed teddy bears ears.

I would tell Matthias to fire him, but he's too greatly valued. Plus my father wouldn't know what to do with himself were he not in the centre of this pack's politics.

"It's stressful, but he's a good war advisor. A great one."

"I know..." I murmur. "Remember last week when he said he felt like something was coming, and Matthias dismissed him?"

I asked Matthias about it and he dismissed me abruptly enough for me to know he's anticipating something. My nerves are fried not knowing, since he usually imparts his problems onto me with ease.

"Alpha Matthias, by the way. You need to get better at speaking his title or you'll get dad in trouble," she scolds, narrowing her soft brown eyes.

"Sorry, I know." I clear my throat. "I'm just saying father is stressed, and Alpha"Matthias isn't taking his warnings seriously."

"Nothing bad is coming, don't worry. You know how dad overthinks."

Eden is disturbingly good at brushing things off. She doesn't stew in worry like I do. Were I not anxiously anticipating the party, I would be lying in bed with the weight of my problems pressing down on my chest.

"I guess so. We should probably get some sleep," I murmur.

She leans over, flicking off the lamp, dousing the room in a comfortable darkness.

"I love you, Dove." Eden's voice fills the room, easing my heartrate down to a comfortable pace.

"I love you too."

Seconds, minutes, or perhaps even hours pass by. For a while I thrum my fingers against my stomach, listening to Eden's gentle breaths. However, like most nights, they lull me into a light slumber...

I wake with a start.

The room is still dark. Tossing my comforter off my legs, I lean over to click the lamp back on. My eyes ache from the abrupt cascade of light, but a couple of blinks eases my sight back.

Eden's bed is empty, her duvet neatly folded back into place.

Glancing at the clock, I realise it's only an hour and a half until midnight.

"Eden?" I call out softly, my voice sounding painfully loud against the pleasant quietness of night.

I doubt she's just gone to the bathroom. She must have left to meet up with her lover like I suspected she has, giving me a chance to prepare.

My muscles are tightly wound with energy as I stand, wincing at the familiar creak of the floorboards. If father wakes and finds me dressing for a party, I'll be in a world of trouble.

Dove POV Varian lifts his hand, brushing his knuckle down the side of my neck. I shudder at the contact, letting out a gasping breath."You're very responsive," he whispers, his words only for my ears despite his touching being for all to see.His fingers trace down my throat, over the sharp slopes of my collarbones and to the slight dip in my bodice. My stomach tightens as he brushes his palm against my breast, squeezing gently.A shiver of pleasure licks up my spine at the contact, even through my dress. I want his hands everywhere, my skin heating with need. This is so wrong. People are staring, whispering, smiling. For them this is normal, but I've never done something so brazen. And Matthias...he would quite possibly kill me for this.Any thought of him melts as Varian's softmouth kiss below my ear. Once. Twice. My breaths are staggered and uneven, my legs weakening. Varian's grip on me is tight, keeping me standing as his hand travels down my front, pausing against my stomach.

Dove PovFor a moment I just gape at him, at his outstretched hand. The thought of pressing close to him, feeling his grip on my hand, on my waist it almost too much to bear. But who am I to deny an Alpha's invitation? My heart is in my throat as I reach out, slipping my hand into his. It's warm, his fingers closing around mine as he stands. He pulls me merely a few feet from his chair, tugging me close. My breath remains securely held in my lungs, even as they begin to burn.I'm painfully stiff as his hand glides around me, settling on my lower back. My stomach brushes against his, my head turned so I don't have to look up at him.Despite being immersed in a world of sin, touching Alpha Varian feels like the most corrupt act I could partake in."This feels surreal," I breathe as we sway to the gentle melody. He tilts his head down and to the side so he can meet my eyeline. I wish he wouldn't — it makes it so much harder to concentrate on not stepping on his feet."What does?""Dancing

Dove povI shudder. Matthias was right about this pack - if the Alpha's friend enjoys such rituals in the bedroom, I can only imagine what other members of his pack indulge in."That is disturbing. Would I die from this?""No." The sternness in his tone makes me jump. "I wouldn't allow anyone in his arms were that the case."I take another sip. "Why bother being so noble?"He angles his head, confused. "Why bother?""You're an Alpha. You can do whatever you please," I mumble.Alpha's can lie, they can deceive and they can manipulate. Matthias surely does, expecting adherence to certain values that he doesn't maintain himself.Varian has no reason to be truthful. He doesn't even know me."Morality doesn't play favourites, Dove," he muses. "I may live a life of less moral accountability than most, but I must act in good conscience as anyone else does. To a degree, anyway.""You're not how I imagined you," I admit before I bring my fingers to my mouth. I shouldn't have let those words sl

Dove povI think I could throw up if I really put my mind to it.People are looking at me now, mumbling incoherently between themselves. I'm seated beside the Alpha, having unwittingly received the most coveted invitation of the night.Even if I'm hoping it is fleeting."Every woman Claude has brought up here to seduce has known all about his methods of seduction," Varian tells me. "I get the sense you do not."My brows crease as I dare glance at him.I've decided I both like and dislike the way he looks at me. It's so intense, so deliberate. He knows his power, knows the effect he has on people. He knows that were he to instruct me to get down on my knees before him, to take his cock into my mouth I would probably do it with not much thought at all."What do you mean by that?" I ask breathlessly."His type rarely deviates." He pauses to sip at his drink. "Beautiful, experienced women who enjoy a walk on the dark side as he does."I recoil in my seat, offense blooming through me. Ouch.

Dove POV tracing it across the room. Many people talk and drink at a low volume, entertained by their company. I admire the leather furniture they lounge and lean on, as well as the stacks of coloured alcohol bottles above the small bar.My attention strays too far to the side, seeing a group of people at the corner of the room whose acts have my lips parting, my breath catching in my throat. One man has another on his knees before him, watching as his cock is worshipped by the man's mouth. His expression is contorted in pleasure, his hips jutting forward a he forces himself deeper into the man's throat.Next to him is a woman pressed against the wall, a man fucking her from behind. His hand is on the back of her neck, while the other is one her hips, pressing her back to meet each thrust. My skin heats at the sight. ~Dove povThe guards at the bottom of the stairs accept the flash of my black slip, urging me to find the next set of stairs upward. My hand slides against the polished banister, my gaze is glued upwards as I marvel at the extent of this incredible palace. The second floor showcases far more artwork encased in gilded frames. Each are intricately painted, boasting vain portraits of the Alpha's forefathers.Mercifully less people mill about up here, lounging on pale chaise lounges, drinking from wine flutes, overcome by mirth. As I wander past I kept my eyes averted, not wanting to offend by letting my eyes linger on bare breasts and round backsides, sparsely covered by sheer fabric. They do not share the same courtesy, glaring at me as I hurry by.I try not to slip on the ornate rugs, nor to allow my hands to brace on decedent wallpaper as I search the second story for the next set of stairs. What could the Alpha possibly do with all this space other than drape attractive people all aro
