Aurora’s POV

I went back to that house the next morning and prayed I would not see Callum.

It was my first day. I still did not know what a personal assistant to Gideon Vale was supposed to do. Follow orders. That was the only instruction I trusted.

The maid opened the door with the same polite face as before. Then I saw him.

Callum was coming toward me in his baseball gear, bag slung over one shoulder, cap in his hand. The second he recognized me, the softness he used to save for me was gone.

Anger filled the space where it had been.

“What the hell are you doing here, bitch?” His voice carried down the hall.

“I told you never to come back and beg. We’re done, Rora.”

“I’m not here for you. I—”

“She’s here for me.”

Gideon came down the stairs like the house belonged to his footsteps. Callum stopped. Confusion crossed his face first. Then something uglier.

He looked at me. “Have you no shame? You came to see my father? For money?”

He turned toward Gideon without waiting for my answer.

“Dad, what are you thinking? She’s a cheap slut. She only came here to ask for cash. You don’t need to waste time talking to her. I’ll throw her out.”

His hand closed around my arm. He started to pull.

Gideon’s hand closed over his.

“Take your hand off her.”

“Dad—”

“I said let go.”

The words were quiet. They still cut the air in half. Callum’s fingers opened. The place where he had held me stung.

“She did not come here for you,” Gideon said. “She is my business now. Leave.”

Callum looked at me one last time.

There was no confusion left. Only hate. Then he walked out with his bag and did not slam the door, which somehow felt worse.

The hall went still.

I could not look at Gideon right away.

My arm still remembered Callum’s grip. My face still remembered the word slut.

“Come with me.”

He led me to the same office as yesterday. The desk that made everything on it look small.

“Sit.”

I sat.

“I assume you read the letter,” he said. “I assume you also received the money.”

“Yes, sir. I read it. But… there is still one thing I don’t understand.”

He did not help me. He only watched, waiting, as if silence was part of the job.

“The Friday schedule only says Red Room. I don’t know what that means. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do there.”

The corner of his mouth moved. It was not a kind smile. It was not even a full one. My heart picked up anyway.

“In two days,” he said, “you will know what is inside the Red Room.”

That was all. He sat back.

“I still have four days to decide if you are serious about working for me. If you disappoint me in those four days, I can end the contract. And they can take you.”

The reminder landed colder than the smirk.

“I promise I will do everything you ask,” I said. “I won’t disappoint you, Mr. Vale.”

He looked at me and said nothing. I wanted that silence to mean he believed me. I was not sure it did.

I hoped I would not regret the promise.

The day stretched longer than the clock admitted.

He did not send me into anything strange. He gave me files. Dates. Names I did not recognize.

He told me to sort, to label, to bring coffee when the cup went empty. He spoke in short sentences and expected me to move before he repeated himself.

I did.

My hands stayed busy. My mind kept drifting to Friday and then forcing itself back to paper.

If this was the work for a whole year, I could survive it. Coffee. Files. Quiet. I almost let myself believe that.

At seven he spoke without lifting his eyes from the document in front of him.

“You can go home.”

I stopped with a folder still open.

“Pardon me?”

“You heard me. Come to the place written on Friday. Wear a black dress.”

I stood there too long.

“I… I don’t have a black dress, Mr. Vale. Is there an important event on Friday?”

“Yes. So make sure you wear one. Go.”

He still did not look at me. I gathered the last of the files, set them straight, and left before he could change the order into something sharper.

The apartment felt smaller after that house. I opened my wardrobe and pulled everything out anyway.

Shirts from work. Old jeans. A cardigan with a loose thread. Almost no dresses. I had never needed one.

Fast-food shifts did not ask for black fabric that touched the floor.

Then I remembered.

My mother had owned one.

I had not gone into her room in a long time. Every time I did, the missing got louder. The air still smelled faintly like the soap she used. I stood in the doorway first, as if she might tell me to come in.

I opened her wardrobe.

Most of what was left I could not wear. At the back, wrapped in a thin cloth, I found it. Black. Simple from far away.

Not simple when I held it up to the light. The neckline sat lower than anything I owned. The waist was cut to follow a body I was not sure I still had.

I changed.

The zipper caught once. Then it closed.

I looked at myself in the mirror she used to use and heard my own voice before I meant to speak.

“Is this too much?”

The dress did not answer.

Friday would.

Aurora’s POV When I left the bathroom I went back to the dining room.Gideon was waiting. His glass was still where I had ruined it. He looked as if nothing on that table mattered now.“I’m sorry, Mr. Vale.”“It’s fine.” He wiped his mouth with a napkin and stood. “I think we can start the party now.”The word party did not sit right in his mouth. Coming from him, it did not sound like music or guests. It sounded like a door I was not ready to open.He walked. I followed him up the stairs and down a long hall that ended in a tall white door. The rest of the house had been marble and light. This corridor felt quieter. Colder already, before he touched the handle. He stopped.“Do you remember the rules?”My throat was dry. I said them anyway.“Yes, Mr. Vale. I will be ready. I will not be late. I will not ask why.”“Good.”He opened the door.Cold air hit me first. Then the room.It was not a bedroom. The walls were dark. The lights were low. There were things I had only seen in movies

Aurora’s POV I wore a coat over my mother’s black dress.I was not sure about any of it. Not the dress. Not the address. Not the hour written in that cold print.I did not know what waited for me there, and the not-knowing sat in my stomach the whole ride.I told the driver to go early. Eight o’clock. An hour before the schedule. If I was going to walk into something I did not understand, I wanted time to look at it first. The taxi slowed. Then it stopped.I did not move.A mansion stood behind tall gates.Lights along the drive. Guards at the entrance. The building did not look like a house. It looked like a place that had never worried about rent.“We’re here,” the driver said.“Are you sure this is the house?”“It’s the address you gave me.”I paid him and stepped out.The night air found the open collar of the coat and slipped under it. Callum was rich. I had always known that. I had never imagined his father lived like this. This was more than money. This was a different country

Aurora’s POV I thought about Mr. Vale’s words until they stopped sounding like a choice.Eight hundred and fifty million dollars was not money I had ever held.It was not money I had ever imagined I could earn.Callum had not called. He had not texted. I tried his number once in the dark and the call died before the first ring.Blocked.The things he said yesterday had not come out of nowhere. They had sounded stored. Like he had been waiting for a reason to throw them at me.I tried not to think about his face. The disgust. Every time it came back, something in my chest tore a little more.At seven in the morning I stood in front of that house again.I was not here to see Callum. I was not here to apologize. I was here for his father. I was here to take money from a man I had met once. The shame sat on my tongue like metal. Was there another door after this one? I already knew the answer. The same maid opened the door.Confusion crossed her face when she saw me.“Good morning, Miss

Aurora’s POV Standing in front of Callum’s house the next morning felt heavier than the walk here.My finger hovered over the bell and would not press it. I had repeated the words all night and they still sounded like a trap.I rang it anyway.A maid opened the door. Her smile was polite and practiced.“Hi, Miss Aurora. Mr. Callum is waiting for you in the living room.”Piano notes drifted down the hall. Soft. Familiar. Of course it was him. Callum played when he was in a good mood.He turned the moment I stepped inside. The maid left us. He crossed the room fast, pulled me into a hug, and kissed me with a smile still on his mouth.“Hey, baby. Why are you here this early? I have practice this afternoon, but it’s fine. I need to hear what my princess wants from me.”That was Callum. Always that sweet. Always the reason other girls looked at me like I had stolen something.“I… I want—”“What’s wrong? Why do you sound nervous? Come sit.”He guided me to the sofa and sat beside me, close

  • I Sold Myself to My Ex’s Father   001

Aurora’s POV “Open the door!” The banging grew harder. It tore me out of sleep so fast that my body was shaking before my eyes were fully open. Someone was shouting outside, raw and impatient, like they had already decided the lock was optional. I left the bedroom on bare feet. I did not make it far. Wood exploded. The front door gave in with a sound so loud I ducked and clapped my hands over my ears. Pain rang through my skull. When I looked up again, four men were inside my apartment. They were huge. Broad shoulders. Dark jackets. Faces that did not belong in a place this small. My ears were still ringing when one of them spoke. “Where is that bastard? Where is Dean?” I forced my spine straight even though my legs wanted to fold. “Who are you? What do you want? My father is not here. Get out.” My voice shook. I hated that they could hear it. The man in front tipped his chin at the others. “Check the whole place. Take anything worth taking.” They moved at once. Drawers.
