Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
It was not anyone else. It was my parents.

“Mom, Dad, I was just dealing with those thugs. They were trying to scam us! Why’re you angry?

“Wait… I thought you were dead?

“Matthew, you broke the news of their deaths. You even put it in the papers and online. What’s going on?”

My barrage of questions froze their raised hands in midair.

“Well, we…”

“Serena, shouldn’t you be glad Mom and Dad are alive? Why’re you questioning them?” Jane said as she walked over and gave them a way out of the situation.

They nodded.

“That’s right. We ran into the typhoon, but Jane stayed calm and saved us!”

I did not answer and just stared at the three of them.

It was no wonder they had faked their deaths so easily.

Lying was like second nature to them. Their faces did not even change as they did it.

My mom looked around and covered her nose in disgust.

“Get rid of this mess and apologize to Jane! This is sickening!”

My dad scowled.

“Serena, you’ve really disappointed us. Go restore our records at the registry office. Without an identity, how am I supposed to run my company?”

Jane smiled as she helped them sit and turned to me.

“Come on, Serena. Don’t tell me you’re not happy to see us alive!”

I stayed where I was.

“Sorry, but in the eyes of the law, the three of you no longer exist.

“And Dad, don’t worry about the company. Since your death, I inherited everything as your heir. I am already the new shareholder.”

The funeral hall went silent at my words.

My dad clutched at his chest and gasped for breath.

My mom’s face twisted in rage. She looked at me as if she wanted me to drop dead on the spot.

Jane screamed and pulled out his heart medicine.

“Dad, are you all right?!

“Serena, how could you be so cruel? The Jameson family company belongs to me! When Dad recovers, you’ll have to hand everything back!”

I crossed my arms and stepped back. I looked at the three of them with a cold smile on my face.

“That depends on whether you have the talent.”

Relief surged through me as I sipped my tea.

This particular tea really did taste better than the tap water I once poured into used bottles in my past life.

As Jane and my mom fussed over my father, I said to them, “You’d better go to a smaller clinic. Hospitals can’t treat people who don’t have legal identities.”

Jane cursed at me. I ignored her and thought about the houses, cars, and shares I had inherited. I was about to walk away when I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned and saw Matthew’s twisted face. Then, everything went black.

When I woke up again, sunlight filled the room. My head throbbed. I tried to move, only to realize that my hands and feet were tied up.

The four of them sat on the couch nearby. They had not noticed that I was awake. They were talking loudly.

“Jane, your idea was perfect! We saw Serena’s true colors.

“She dares to covet what belongs to me? She can keep dreaming! Don’t worry, Jane, I’ll make her give everything back.”

“Mom, Dad, you’re the best! But owning the world means nothing if I can’t get into a good university.”

“Don’t worry. We already decided. Once we’re done with Serena, we will give you her identity. You will get into a top school and officially become our daughter.”

Hopelessness surged inside me. I stayed quiet and struggled to reach the kitchen for scissors.

Unfortunately, I bumped into a vase. It fell with a heavy thud.

My parents and Jane rushed over.

“Serena, you think you’re clever trying to take over the Jameson family? You failed the test. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.”

Their fists and kicks rained down. My mom’s heel slammed on my face. I turned my head, and pain tore through my ear.

Jane stood above me with an elegant smile and watched me suffer.

“Serena, you have only yourself to blame for being so greedy.”

Then, she handed my dad a boning knife.

“Dad, your health isn’t good. Use this. Be careful not to hurt yourself.”

Furious, my father grabbed the knife and raised it high. At that moment, there was a heavy pounding at the door.

“Does Serena live here?”

Jane and Matthew fought each other. Gasping for air, my parents turned to me with red, bloodshot eyes.“Serena, we never knew about this! It was all Jane’s plan! “We trusted the wrong person. We wronged you! We apologize. We’ll remove Jane from the family.”Then, they opened their arms. They waited for me to throw myself into their arms and reunite with them.I rolled my eyes and turned away. “No thanks! I already announced in the media that I’ll cut ties with you. From now on, we are strangers.”My mom looked a little hurt. “Serena, you’re our daughter. How can you be so cruel?”My dad looked confused too. “You always hated Jane. We’re willing to let her go. You’re our only daughter. Why won’t you accept this?”I met their eyes and smiled through my tears. “Do you know why I hated Jane?“At first, I hated her for being shallow and petty. Now, I see the truth. You spoiled her. Your favoritism gave her the courage to hurt me. The one who treated me like trash wasn’t J

My parents looked at each other and saw fear reflected on their faces. “No one else knew about this. We never said a word. The only one who could have told her is you, Jane. So, this whole faking death business was your bet?!”Jane froze. She had no idea that I knew everything. She had no idea that I had returned to the past with all my memories intact. With only a few words, I could make the entire scheme look like her plan.“It’s not true, Mom, Dad. I never said anything. Please believe me…”Jane rushed forward and tried to throw herself into their arms like always. This time, they turned away. Neither of them held her.I smiled and watched. The real fight was finally about to begin. My parents controlled the Jameson family, but what they hated most was someone manipulating them. Jane told them it was only a test to see if I cared about money and was fit to inherit the family business. But I called it a bet. Their perception of Jane would be completely skewed. In

The Jameson family made most of their money from stationeries. When I became the top scorer in the college entrance exams, many parents rushed to buy our products. The factory workers could hardly keep up.Then, the scandal hit. Parents not only stopped buying but also demanded refunds.Almost overnight, the company’s stock collapsed. Even strangers cursed the Jameson family. People said even animals protect their young, but the Jameson family was worse than beasts.I watched the screen, pleased with the outrage against them. Just as I set down my phone to get some rest, the door burst open.My parents charged in with Jane and dragged me out of bed. “Serena, look what you’ve done!”I ignored their anger and asked something that caught them off-guard. “How long was I unconscious?”My mom thought for a moment before saying offhandedly, “Three days. But that doesn’t matter now. “We brought reporters with us. You need to clear our name. The Jameson family is ruined because of y

The reporter checked my ID and smiled.“This matches perfectly! So, you really are the Jameson family’s eldest daughter, Serena Jameson. Tell us, what’s going on here? Why is the daughter of a wealthy family covered in so many injuries?”I looked at my parents, who were standing off to one side and signaling me to keep quiet, and I gave them a faint smile.“The injuries are from my parents and my adopted sister.”When I spoke, the camera flashes almost blinded me.My dad lost control. He rushed forward and slapped me. I fell to the floor. “You ungrateful child! Who told you to twist the truth? “You were abusing your sister, and we only punished you slightly. How can you make such a big deal?”I covered my face and spat out a mouthful of blood. “Really? You’re angry because I ruined your little plan to replace me with Jane? “Don’t forget, thanks to Jane, you’ve already lost everything.”My dad gasped for breath, and his eyes were bloodshot as he glared at me. He swung his

Under my parents’ murderous gazes, the butler flung the front door open and let in a group of reporters with cameras.“Yes, this is where Serena lives.”They walked in smiling but stopped when they saw me covered in blood. The lead reporter flipped through his papers, pulled out a photo, and looked at me in disbelief.“You’re Serena Jameson, right? What happened here?”Relief surged through me. I opened my mouth to answer, but Jane shoved a rag between my teeth.“No, I’m Serena Jameson! “She’s just a maid. She stole my mother’s necklace that was worth millions. And those injuries? She fell on her own.”My parents exchanged glances and quickly backed up her story. “That’s right! You must be here to interview our daughter. Please, this way!“Get this maid to the police! We don’t want to see her again!”With that, they put on fake smiles and tried to lead the reporters away. The reporters looked at the three of them. They were barely able to hold their cameras steady. “Hol
