Chapter 2

作者: The Gardener's Robin
Kayden's POV

We had been dating for two years and married for seven. I wanted to leave this relationship with at least a shred of dignity.

Fingering the donation withdrawal form in my bag, I tried to weigh my words carefully. "I went to the hospital today—"

"Can't this wait until after dinner?" Sienna interrupted me with an impatient sigh. "Kayden, I don't have time to waste on this."

I froze, staring at her in sheer disbelief.

It felt like a lump of cotton was wedged in my throat, choking back my words.

Wasting time. I'd said those words before.

Back then, Sienna had pursued me with relentless passion. She would show up outside my lecture hall, in the cafeteria, and on the running track.

I lost count of how many love letters she gave me, but I turned her down all the same. "I don't want to be in a relationship right now. Stop wasting your time."

"How could it be a waste of time?"

18-year-old Sienna would smile so warmly that her eyes seemed to glow. In them, I saw my own reflection.

"Catching the same breeze, looking at the same tree, and soaking in the same sunlight all make me happy just because I'm with you," she'd said. "Listening to you talk feels like heaven even if you're turning me down."

Back then, my heart had pounded like a drum, and my face had burned red.

Now, as I looked at the cold, detached face before me, she felt like a complete stranger.

When did Sienna stop giving me even a single moment to speak?

"Professor Waller, if your husband didn't buy groceries, let's just forget about it," Ivan said with a grin, nudging Sienna by the waist toward the kitchen. "I actually really miss those mushroom and pork ravioli you made last time."

A smile tugged at the corner of Sienna's lips. She tied on an apron before turning back to affectionately ruffle Ivan's hair. "Lucky for you, I made extra last time and froze them."

"Professor Waller, you're the best!"

They laughed and joked as they walked past me, making me feel completely invisible.

A self-deprecating laugh escaped my lips.

So those mushroom ravioli were never meant for me in the first place. I had just eaten the experimental batch Ivan didn't even want.

I forced myself to calm down. Wanting to spare Sienna some dignity, I decided against starting a scene in front of Ivan.

I didn't want to look so pathetic.

They ate ravioli and chatted away about trivial nonsense in the dining room. They went from thesis topics to the changing weather, to the snowfall in Halverin and the autumn leaves in Mount Gryndale.

Sienna, who was usually so stingy with her words, offered a warm response to everything Ivan said.

I sat in silence in the bedroom, feeling my once-warm heart slowly freeze over.

It wasn't until sunset that Sienna finally opened the bedroom door.

Smoothing her hair back, she handed me a takeout bag. "You're severely anemic lately. You need to eat."

It was chicken noodle soup from my absolute favorite spot. Back before they offered delivery, Sienna used to wake up early every single day just to pick it up for me.

"You seemed off today. Why were you being so aggressive toward Ivan?" she asked.

"Aggressive?" I let out a bitter laugh and looked straight at her. "He's into you. Can't you tell? You brought him into our home, let him wear my clothes, and let him spray alcohol in my face. Even though you know I'm allergic to mushrooms, you froze a batch of mushroom ravioli for him—"

"Enough!"

Sienna's expression darkened. Her brow furrowed deep with blatant disdain as she looked at me.

"Ivan is the top student in my research group. What's wrong with having him over for dinner? Stop measuring people with your narrow mindset. He has drive and ambition. He's nothing like a man with no career like you."

A bone-chilling cold seeped into my chest, shattering my heart into icy bits.

I stared at her in utter disbelief, my entire body trembling. "Sienna, you were the one who begged me not to work!"

She was the one who said she couldn't stand seeing me work such grueling hours and hated that we barely had any time together. She promised she'd provide while I managed the house, and I trusted her.

Out of love and trust, I gave up my career and my dignity just to support hers.

Sienna looked at my furrowed brow and let out a long sigh after a pause. "Fine, I spoke too harshly. Your health isn't great, so try not to get so worked up."

She headed for the front door. "It's raining outside. I need to drive Ivan home. We'll talk when I get back."

I didn't try to stop her. I couldn't even if I wanted to.

Right then, a message from Caleb popped up. "Kayden, the divorce papers are ready. I booked two tickets abroad. Come clear your head with me."

Without a second thought, I typed back. "Okay."

I waited on the couch for Sienna, ready to talk through the divorce. I tried calling her dozens of times, but every single call went unanswered.

It wasn't until 7:00 am the next day that she finally unlocked the door.

Catching sight of me, Sienna looked genuinely surprised. "Kayden, why are you sitting there? It rained pretty hard last night, and Ivan slipped on the stairs and twisted his ankle. I took him to the hospital and stayed to look after him."

"Sienna…"

After a sleepless night, my voice was hoarse beyond recognition. "Is sending a text really that hard? Is picking up the phone really that hard? Is listening to me say one single sentence… really that hard?"

  • I Took Away Her Chance at Survival   Chapter 9

Kayden's POVSienna snapped her head up. Her trembling hands clutched mine as she scrambled to explain, "Kayden, I never thought you were filthy! I love you so much. I just thought acting this way would make you care about me more."We've been together for so many years. I was afraid that, after years together, your love for me would slowly fade, so I kept pretending I didn't care."She said she pretended not to share everyday things with me, yet she would secretly wash my undergarments. She would subtly spray perfume in the exact same scent I wore. She would drop quiet hints to find out what I was into lately, only to present it as an offhand gift later. She said she was just too proud to admit it.I listened in silence until the rain outside had all but stopped, and her frantic explanations finally trailed off.I looked at Sienna not as the lover I'd adored for nine years, but like a complete stranger who meant nothing to me."But Sienna, I think you're filthy now. I can't br

Kayden's POV"What?" Sienna froze, caught completely off guard.I continued, "Yet you always bought me ties and shirts in the exact same muted colors. This specific set of cufflinks was rare, and almost no store carried it."But back when you were pursuing me, you would've scoured every single accessory shop from north to south just to lay whatever style I wanted right at my feet. Sienna, you changed a long time ago. Haven't you noticed?""No, Kayden! I've only ever loved you!"Sienna's eyes welled up, her panic making her visibly flustered. She hastily grabbed the ring, trying to slide it onto my finger, but I yanked my hand back."You love me, but there are plenty of people you like. Take Ivan, for instance. Do you dare swear you never held feelings for him that crossed the line between student and professor?"Ask yourself. How long has it been since you last cooked for me? Whenever I brought it up, you'd brush me off, saying you were busy. Yet when it came to Ivan, you sudden

Kayden's POVI blocked every single way Sienna had to reach me.Then I flew overseas with Caleb and had the time of my life for two weeks. We took in the rolling hills and cypress trees bathed in the bright sun of Valerossa, walked through the blue-and-white alleys of Bellavira, and marveled at Mount Aurelion's eternal snow cap resting above the azure glacial lake on Elaris Island.Living a life without Sienna was richer and far more vibrant than anything I'd known before.Once back in the country, I was invited to a college reunion. After a few drinking games, the initial awkwardness in the room completely melted away.Riding a booze-fueled high, someone turned to ask me, "Kayden, how come Professor Waller didn't come with you? Don't tell me she's at home babysitting?""Hey, it's not impossible! They've been married for seven years now. Their kid's probably almost in elementary school! Imagine having a genius mom like that. That kid's gonna be built differently!"Not wanting t

Third-Person POV"Enough." Sienna pried Ivan's hands off her. "I don't want to hear you say anything like that ever again. You're fine, so tell your parents to drop the charges. "I'll check the security camera at home and find out what really happened. I can't stay with you any longer. I need to pick up Kayden. He has something to tell me."Kayden's frantic, desperate shouting from two hours ago suddenly flashed through her mind. It felt like a dull blade sawing against her heart, leaving her choked with pain.Ignoring Ivan's low pleas behind her, she headed for the door, dialing Kayden's number as she walked. Without exception, every single one of her dozen calls went straight unanswered. She opened WhatsApp to send a message, only to finally spot the image Kayden had sent her earlier. It was a divorce agreement sitting right on her office desk."I've signed it. Sienna, let's get a divorce."It felt like a sudden bolt of thunder crashing down. Sienna stood frozen on the spot.

Kayden's POVI caught a cab home, grabbed my luggage, and left.Even after I boarded my flight out of the country, Sienna still hadn't replied.I scrolled up through our chat history. It was mostly just me talking, complaining about the weather, whining about grocery prices, and asking what she wanted to eat.Sienna rarely responded, and whenever she did, it was always the same detached brush-offs—"Oh", "Okay", or "Anything".I recalled looking through her phone that night and seeing her chat logs with Ivan. No matter what he sent, she would answer him line by line. Even if work kept her busy for hours, she would scroll back up and quote every single message to reply. She was a chatty talker in front of the person she loved and a quiet wall with the person she didn't.After all these years, Sienna hadn't changed a bit.I stopped clinging to the hope of a reply and blocked and deleted her contact.…Third-Person POVSienna had just finished taking Ivan through every test i

  • I Took Away Her Chance at Survival   Chapter 4

Kayden's POV Inside the bedroom, Sienna murmured my name softly under her breath, "Kayden…"I didn't tirelessly change her clothes or wipe her down like I used to. Instead, I stood by the bed, staring down at her for a long time.In the end, I pulled off my wedding ring and tossed it into the wastebasket right alongside hers. After nine whole years, we had finally gone from college sweethearts to despising the very sight of each other.I spent the night in the guest room, only to be yanked awake by a furious Sienna the next morning. She glared at me, her eyes filled with sheer disappointment. "Kayden, did you beat up Ivan last night?"Woken by the sharp pain, I yanked my wrist free from her grip. "What, feeling sorry for him?""His parents called the police! They're making a scene at the college right now! You're coming with me to apologize to him!"Sienna looked anxious, her eyes bloodshot, as she slammed my clothes against my head.Rubbing my sore wrist, I let out a bitter
