Chapter 4

作者: September
After that, Lilith became the person in the training room who needed the most care.

She was always pale. She always said she did not sleep well. She always fell during sparring matches and then smiled and said, “It is okay. I can keep going.” Every time, Orion frowned. Every time, he walked over and asked if she was hurt.

“She is too weak,” he said to me once. “You need to go easier on her.”

I looked at him. We had trained together for years. He never told me to go easy on anyone before. He made me win. He made me lose. He never pushed me aside just because someone else was weaker.

“She is older than me,” I said.

“She is not as strong as you.” Orion said it like it was a fact that needed no discussion. “You are stronger. What is the big deal about letting her have this?”

I was stronger. So I had to give in. I did not know how to argue with that logic.

During training, Lilith always stood next to me. She always asked questions in that soft voice. Then before I could answer, her eyes went red. “I am sorry. Am I too slow?” Her eyes were big, and when they got red, everyone noticed. Orion always said, “You just need more time. Take it slow.”

He never told me to take it slow. He always told me to go faster. To hit harder. That I could still do better.

During a squad sparring match, Lilith was put on the opposite side. Her moves were slow. Her openings were obvious. I did not hold back. I attacked the way the instructor taught us. I pushed her to the edge of the training floor.

She fell. I did not knock her down. She took a step back when I lunged, slipped on her own, and hit the ground. Her gear made a dull sound. She curled up and did not move.

The training room went quiet. Orion was the first to rush over. He crouched beside her with his hand on her shoulder and asked if she was okay. Lilith lifted her head slowly. Her eyes were red. Her lips trembled.

“I am fine. I just got too nervous.”

She tried to stand but fell back down. Orion caught her and turned to look at me. His eyes were cold.

“Sylvie, this is a sparring match, not real combat. You hit too hard.”

“I did not touch her.” I said. “She slipped on her own.”

“Can you not see how much weaker she is than you?”

I said nothing. Lilith leaned against Orion’s shoulder and whispered, “Do not blame Sylvie. It is my fault for not being good enough.”

Her voice shook. Every word sounded like she was holding back pain.

Orion helped her to a seat and walked back to me. His face was hard. “Be more careful next time.”

I watched him and thought about the time I fell during a sparring match in intermediate training. My wrist guard came loose. My opponent tripped me. My knee hit the floor hard. I could not stand up. Orion ran over and crouched in front of me. He checked my knee first, then looked up at me and said, “You scared me. But your wrist guard came loose again. You need to tie it tighter. I do not want you getting hurt because of something you could have prevented.”

The last squad meeting before the Academy Festival arrived.

I walked into the training room wearing my family’s traditional dark training gear. Lilith looked at me and tilted her head.

“Sylvie,” she said softly. “Your training gear today… the color is so dark.”

A few teammates glanced at her, then at me. No one laughed.

“Did something happen at home?” Lilith asked in a small voice. Her eyes were full of just the right amount of concern. “I heard… something happened at the southern gathering.”

The training room went quiet.

She knew. Of course she knew. What happened at the southern gathering was not my family’s fault. But in the wolf world, rumors run faster than truth. She was hinting at it. In front of everyone.

I looked at Orion. He was not smiling. But he said nothing.

“Say that again.”

Lilith stepped back and lowered her head. “I am sorry. I should not have brought it up. I was just…” Her voice got smaller. “Just worried about you.”

She looked so fragile. So innocent. Like a frightened pup. Orion walked over and stood in front of her.

“Sylvie. She does not know how to talk to people. Do not hold it against her.”

“She insulted my family in front of everyone,” I said. “And you want me to let it go?”

“She does not know any better. Could you at least act with some dignity?” Orion’s voice was impatient now. “The whole training room is watching. What kind of picture are you painting with this scene?”

“Apologize.” His voice dropped, like he did not want to waste another word on me.

“I will not.”

“What do you want from me?” Orion’s patience was clearly gone. “She already apologized. I am trying to talk to you nicely. If you keep pushing this, do you want everyone to think you are unreasonable?”

I looked into his eyes. “You think I am being unreasonable?”

“You are being unreasonable right now,” he said. “Apologize.”

“I said no.”

Then his hand came down.

No one in the training room made a sound. I held my face and looked up slowly. Lilith stood behind Orion with her hand over her mouth. Her eyes were red. Her face looked scared, heartbroken, sorry for me. But her eyes were too bright. There was a glint of triumph in them.

I felt tired. Twelve years of history shattered by one slap.

“Orion Draven,” I said, my voice quiet but steady. “Our engagement is over. I am done with you.”

Not long after that, Lilith left Ironhold Academy. I heard she and Orion had also broken up.Orion changed. He started appearing in my sight without a word. In the early morning, warm meat broth would be waiting on the ledge beside the training ground. He stayed at the edge of the field during practice, not close, but not far either. After training, his footsteps followed me down the forest path.“What do you want?” I finally stopped him at the bend of the trail. The evening light fell through the trees, making his thin face look even darker.“I just want to give back what you gave me.”“I do not need it. Staying away from me is the only repayment I want.”I told no one about my decision to leave Ironhold Academy. On my last training day, I shared a simple meal of roasted meat with a few close teammates.Orion was the last to find out I was going to a Pack in the north. On the day I left, he followed my car for a long time. The forest road curved and turned, and his figure kept appeari

Orion’s blood was still dripping onto the floor.I remembered when we were children and someone bullied me. Orion beat that person until he could not get up. On the way home, he swung his bruised wrist and told me my crying face was ugly. But he hid the blood on his sleeve behind his back.Later, that person brought others to get revenge. They pushed Orion from a high place. When I found him, he was sitting in a pile of broken stone, clumsily hiding his wound behind his back. “Stop crying. It does not hurt.”That night, I searched half the territory to gather a jar of herbal ointment. When I pulled up his sleeve the next day, his ears turned dark red, but he still sat still and let me spread the medicine over every layer of his wound. Then Lilith came. One day she walked past me and tripped over my training bag. The ointment spilled everywhere. She crouched down to pick it up, her eyes turning red in an instant.“I am so sorry. I did not mean to.” She handed the jar back to me, her fin

That day’s training ended with my teammates taking me home. My mother saw the bruise on my knee and insisted on taking me to the healer’s house. We went to the nearest one in the evening. The waiting area was almost empty. Only one person sat in the corner.“Sylvie?”Ronan Ashby looked up. His eyes caught the dim light and seemed too bright. His knee was wrapped in thick bandages, with dark blood already seeping through to the outer layer.“What happened to you?” I frowned. He glanced down at his leg and smiled. “Nothing. Just a training injury.”A healer’s assistant passed by with a cart of supplies. I heard her mutter under her breath, “His kneecap was showing, and he says it is nothing.”Ronan’s ears turned red. He quickly changed the subject. “You look pale. Are you hurt too?” He reached into his coat and pulled out a small packet of ointment. “Here. I heard this is the kind you use.”I tried to refuse, but he had already pressed it into my hand.We kept running into each other at

One day after training, Orion blocked my way outside the storage room. His clothes carried the smell of Lilith’s herbal ointment. His face was hard to read.“Sylvie,” he said, his voice rough. “Let us get back together.”I gave a cold laugh and did not answer. He stepped toward me and grabbed my wrist. “I know you are upset. But Lilith is weak. She just transferred here. She cannot keep up with training. Can I just ignore her? You are stronger than her. What is wrong with letting her have this?”“You are stronger than her. Let her have this.” I had heard those words so many times. Every time, he was speaking for Lilith. Every time, he was asking me to give way.“So the slap,” I said, looking at him. “That was because I am stronger too?”Orion’s face went stiff. “I was wrong about that. But I already apologized.”I looked at him. His brows were tight. His eyes were full of frustration and self pity, like he was the one who had been wronged. Like his apology meant I should forget everyth

Word spread through Ironhold Academy quickly. Orion and Lilith were officially together. As I came out of the training room, I saw Lilith on her toes, fixing the fur trim on Orion’s collar.“Orion,” she said in a sweet voice, “shall we go to the border tonight to celebrate?”Orion’s eyes moved past her shoulder and met mine. He tried to step back, but Lilith gently held onto his sleeve. She turned to look where he was looking and gave me a small, timid smile, like she was afraid I might be angry.I said nothing. I turned and walked away. In the resting area, a few teammates were whispering.“I heard Lilith came out of Orion’s car this morning.”“How is Sylvie taking it?”I closed my storage chest and did not listen to the rest. After training that day, I sat by the window at home and talked to my mother. She was sorting dried herbs. She cut a stem and looked up at me.“I have seen plenty of her kind,” she said. “Stay away from her.”“It is not right to talk behind someone’s back.” Orio

The sound of me slamming the door made the lamps in the hallway flicker.I ran into my room and pulled out everything that carried Orion’s mark. The ceremonial claw ornament he gave me from the top shelf of the training rack. The outer cloak he left in the back of my wardrobe. The faded gathering tokens from the drawer. I shoved them all into a wooden chest.A jar fell from the shelf and shattered on the floor. Orion had given it to me on my sixteenth birthday. Inside were protective charms he had carved my name into, each one strung on sinew.I stared at the broken pieces on the ground. I picked up the chest, walked to the border of our territory, and threw the whole thing into the wild. After that, I reached out to my mother through Pack link.“Mother,” I said, “My engagement to Orion is over. We are done.”When my mother returned to our house, she found me pressing a cold herbal compress to my face. She took one look at me, and her hands started shaking. “Who hurt you?”I buried my
