Chapter 3

Penulis: Nameless
Misty was about to say something, but my face went pale.

I told her, “Please, stop talking...”

She rolled her eyes, turned around, and walked off.

In the end, I did not have the courage to see Beatrice again.

All I could see in my head was that image of me being crippled and dying alone in a filthy bed.

So, I went straight to Taylor and put in my resignation.

My position did not really require much of a handover, anyway.

In just an hour, I had packed up my things, walked out of that building, and never looked back.

I had to change my number again.

I felt like I was running for my life.

I moved from Caldon to Dantrell.

This time, I was smarter about it.

I asked Aldric to keep me posted on Beatrice’s whereabouts. Whenever she came to my city, I would flee.

She would always arrive right after I left.

I kept that up until I got recruited by a company overseas. That was when I finally stopped running.

I worked abroad for six years. I started with nothing and built a good life for myself.

I only returned home because Aldric got sick.

He treated me to dinner to welcome me back.

Beatrice and Misty were there too.

Six years had passed, and Beatrice seemed more level-headed. Time had not aged her much. If anything, she looked more elegant.

“Conan, you must be tired from the trip.”

She did not look surprised to see me.

It was almost like time really did heal everything.

It turned out she and Aldric never actually got married. My meddling must have done some damage to their relationship after all.

Around the table, some of us already had children of our own. Others were still casually dating.

Aldric had climbed the ranks in the government and made it to division chief.

Beatrice was the real success story. She had invested in shares over time, and she eventually ran the whole company.

Word was she had a few houses in Caldon.

A few rounds in, most people were pretty drunk. Beatrice, however, had not touched a drop.

“Beatrice, you’re not marrying anytime soon, so what’s with all the houses? Tell you what, just give one to me. I’ll help you take care of it.”

Misty teased her.

Beatrice smiled and glanced my way as she spoke.

“Well, Conan isn’t married either, is he? He bought a place overseas, too. Why don’t you go help him out?”

Her words caught me off guard. My chest tightened.

That’s when her friends circled me.

“Speaking of which, Conan, I heard you’ve had a crush on Beatrice since you were a kid.

“You’d even insisted on being her husband when you played house. So, do you still have feelings for her now?

Everyone fixed their gaze on me.

I shot a quick look at Beatrice.

She just kept smiling, calmly pouring drinks for everyone, acting like the conversation had nothing to do with her.

I was young and clueless back then. I had probably caused Beatrice a lot of headaches. Honestly, those feelings had faded a long time ago.

I twisted the ring on my finger as I continued, “Besides, I’m actually getting married soon. When the time comes, I’ll save you all a seat at the wedding.”

Just then, I heard the sound of a glass breaking.

Beatrice stared at her high heels stained with spilled wine. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, and she remained dazed for a long time.

“Sorry about that. I lost my grip. Let me clean this up.”

She got up and left the dining table.

Aldric asked me when I had started dating someone.

I was, after all, the villain of the story. I could lie without batting an eye, so I said, “I dated a blonde from Ashford about six months ago.”

When Beatrice returned, she, who never drank, downed glass after glass.

After everyone left, she stood in front of me and said with teary eyes, “Conan, aren’t you going to walk me home?”

She was obviously drunk, and it would be unsafe for her to go back alone.

With that thought, I agreed.

Even after I had walked her all the way to her door, she did not say a single word.

As I watched her unlock the door and open it, I said hesitantly, “Beatrice... I’m not going to come in. I really should get going.”

To my surprise, she grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the house.

I lost my balance and grabbed onto her instinctively.

The second the door clicked shut behind us, she had me pressed against it.

The room was dark. Every sensation felt amplified.

I could feel her breath, thick with alcohol.

My heart pounded as I said, “Beatrice, don’t—”

Before I could finish speaking, her lips crashed into mine.

She kissed me fiercely, not giving me room to back off.

“Conan, why did you lie about having a girlfriend? You were the one who flirted with me first. So, how come I’m always the one chasing after you?”

“Beatrice, stop. I have to leave.”

She held me down firmly.

Her voice was bitter and choked with tears as she said, “Conan, you are so cold-hearted.

“You can’t just abandon me. You owe it to me to make things right after what you did to me eight years ago.”

“Just because you think you’re the villain, you assume you’re just the side character?”“What else could it be?”She shook her head and smiled bitterly. “Beatrice is the only one in the book who died of natural causes. That makes her the one true protagonist. “We generally call the man with the deepest bond to the female lead the male lead. Other than growing up together as childhood friends, she has nothing with your brother. “So, you are the male lead.”...I had not seen Beatrice for a long time. She did not answer my calls either.I had no choice but to go to her house. She was around when I got to her house and knocked on her door. She must have just gotten off work because her pencil skirt was still on.“Have a seat,” she said coldly. It was clear that my rejection that day had hurt her deeply. The way she looked at me was tinged with sorrow.“If you hate me that much, why are you here? Is something urgent?”“I don’t hate you.”For once, I was dying to come

Beatrice had replied: [Okay, fine. I’ll be gentler next time.]Next time?!I was so embarrassed that I wished I could disappear.Up ahead, Aldric and Misty turned to us at the same time and gave me a thumbs-up.I was at a loss for a moment. Beatrice also took the opportunity to question me.“Conan, it’s been eight years. It’s also my fault I waited this long to finally work up the courage to ask you this. Do you want to be my boyfriend?”At that moment, time stood still. She was all I could see, lit up and beautiful in the light. How perfect that would be if only this were the novel’s ending. “No. We wouldn’t end well together.”I rejected her and quickened my pace, walking past Aldric and Misty.I did not dare look back. I could not bear to see Beatrice’s eyes....After that day, Misty still came by every day to keep Aldric company. However, Beatrice never showed up again. One evening, after dinner, Misty helped Aldric settle in for his evening nap.She then came

“You know what? They’re right. What you did back then was wrong, and I shouldn’t have let it slide.“You need to face the consequences.”My heart leaped into my throat as I asked, “What are you doing?”She lowered her head and bit down on my collarbone, sucking it hard.“Are you out of your mind?!”I pushed her away with all my might.Even so, she left one mark after another on my body.“Snap out of it!”She looked at me with a bitter expression and said, “I don’t believe you have a girlfriend.“If you really have one, tell her to come fight me.”When I left her place, all I could say was, “You’re impossible!”Beatrice had changed. The Beatrice of the past had always been gentle and soft-spoken.The current one was completely unpredictable, and she even carried a certain unsettling side about her.In all those flashes of the future I had seen, the Beatrice I fought with day in and day out was never this difficult to read. For the past few days, Beatrice kept coming aroun

Something snapped inside me.Even though both of us were still dressed, the sensation was so intense that my hand reacted as if it were being burned.I tried to pull away, but she held on even tighter. The air between us grew thick with unspoken tension.“Beatrice, you’re drunk...”“Conan, isn’t this exactly how you touched me back then? Why are you pulling away now? You didn’t hold back at all when you had your way with me eight years ago.”Even though we were only intimate once, what she said made those memories come flooding back. They made me feel utterly ashamed.“Are you recalling it? You’re blushing.”Only then did I realize that Beatrice was rubbing her cheek against mine.“Conan, you don’t actually have a girlfriend, do you? Because a guy with a girlfriend wouldn’t react like this.”She kissed my lips as she added, “Why don’t you finish what you wanted to start eight years ago?”Her gaze in the dim room bewitched me. I could not resist indulging her.She leaned he

Aldric was not alone. Beatrice’s friend, Misty Fowler, was also there. They thought Beatrice had lost her mind, so they pulled her off me.Aldric even slapped her across the face. The scene was chaotic. At that moment, I finally understood just how wrong I had been.“It’s not Beatrice’s fault. It was me.”I confessed everything.Everyone fell silent. They all stared at me like I was a stranger.Misty gritted her teeth and said, while pointing at me angrily, “You know what you did was illegal, right?”“I know. I’m willing to face the consequences.”In the end, Beatrice still stepped in front of me.“He’s just a kid who didn’t know any better. He was messing around. Don’t blow this out of proportion.”“Are you seriously still defending him at a time like this? He’s twenty-two years old! You can’t still call him a kid!”I looked at Beatrice with tear-filled eyes.I wanted to take her to the hospital, but when I grabbed her arm, she shook me off.Aldric sighed and said, “I
