Chapter 2

Penulis: Nameless
Aldric was not alone. Beatrice’s friend, Misty Fowler, was also there.

They thought Beatrice had lost her mind, so they pulled her off me.

Aldric even slapped her across the face.

The scene was chaotic.

At that moment, I finally understood just how wrong I had been.

“It’s not Beatrice’s fault. It was me.”

I confessed everything.

Everyone fell silent. They all stared at me like I was a stranger.

Misty gritted her teeth and said, while pointing at me angrily, “You know what you did was illegal, right?”

“I know. I’m willing to face the consequences.”

In the end, Beatrice still stepped in front of me.

“He’s just a kid who didn’t know any better. He was messing around. Don’t blow this out of proportion.”

“Are you seriously still defending him at a time like this? He’s twenty-two years old! You can’t still call him a kid!”

I looked at Beatrice with tear-filled eyes.

I wanted to take her to the hospital, but when I grabbed her arm, she shook me off.

Aldric sighed and said, “I’ll go with her. You stay here and think about your actions.”

That was when I realized why Aldric always said that I was loved.

So, this was what it felt like not to be loved.

From that moment onward, I knew I had to pay for what I had done.

Word spread fast.

Everyone found out there was a lunatic who loved Beatrice so obsessively that he had actually drugged her.

I bombarded her with apology texts, bought gift after gift, and begged Aldric to pass them along for me.

A few days later, she finally replied to me.

[I don’t blame you. If you have feelings for me, just be upfront about it. There was no need for all that.]

But by the time I received that message, I had already boarded the train to Caldon.

I replied.

[Thank you, and sorry. Don’t worry. I won’t try to force you to like me anymore.]

After sending that, I removed the SIM card from my phone and cut it in half with scissors.

Then, I inserted a new SIM card with a different number that I had prepared in advance.

Before I left, I told Aldric he could text me if he missed me. But I made it clear that I did not want to hear anything about Beatrice.

I was done being the villainous side character.

I wanted to leave my old life behind for good.

...

I got through my probation period and finally found my footing in the big city.

I thought I would never run into Beatrice again.

Unexpectedly, Beatrice was so good at her job that she got transferred to my company as the new executive director.

The day “Ms. Sherbird” showed up, I was completely frozen. I could not help but curse my luck.

I watched her walk in, and I kept watching until she disappeared into her office.

Luckily, she did not spot me.

My colleague, Catrina Smith, exclaimed, “Finally, a boss who’s beautiful and has an amazing figure!”

She then nudged me with her elbow and said, “Conan, she’s totally your type!”

I snapped back to reality and nodded awkwardly, “Yeah, she is.”

My supervisor, Taylor Wright, poked me on the head and said, “Don’t even think about it. I heard some guy once tried to spike Ms. Sherbird’s drink.

“Ever since then, she couldn’t stand people who pull underhanded nonsense.”

My heart dropped. That shameful memory came flooding back.

Catrina covered her mouth and whispered.

“No way! That’s just vile. Did she report it to the police?”

I wanted to find a hole in the ground and hide.

Logically, I should have quit on the spot.

But the job market was brutal, and I could not afford to just walk out.

Besides, my position was nothing special. My desk was tucked away in a corner.

Even though we shared the same floor, she never even glanced my way.

So, I lay low for two full months.

Then, Misty randomly showed up at the company to find Beatrice.

Beatrice was in a meeting, so Misty started wandering around.

I kept my head down, praying she would not see me.

Of course, my worst fear came true.

“Are you... Conan? No way!

“You followed Beatrice all the way here? You really don’t know when to quit. I almost have to admire your dedication.”

Everyone turned to look at me at once, making me feel vulnerable.

I could feel their stares burning into me.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I tried to deny, “No, it’s not like that! I came to the company first. It’s just a coincidence...”

Just then, Beatrice finished her meeting and walked out of the conference room.

When she noticed me, she said, “Conan? What are you doing here?”

Without giving me a chance to explain, Misty pointed at me and said, “What else would he be doing? Obviously he’s here to chase after you.

“This is too good! I have to post this on social media!”

Beatrice’s hands were trembling as she clutched the folder in her hands.

She must have felt utterly humiliated to see me here.

“Conan, I’ll see you at lunch. I have something urgent right now. We’ll catch up then.”

With that, she entered her office with our CEO, Winston Sterling.

My colleagues looked intrigued and started prying into my relationship with Beatrice.

“Just because you think you’re the villain, you assume you’re just the side character?”“What else could it be?”She shook her head and smiled bitterly. “Beatrice is the only one in the book who died of natural causes. That makes her the one true protagonist. “We generally call the man with the deepest bond to the female lead the male lead. Other than growing up together as childhood friends, she has nothing with your brother. “So, you are the male lead.”...I had not seen Beatrice for a long time. She did not answer my calls either.I had no choice but to go to her house. She was around when I got to her house and knocked on her door. She must have just gotten off work because her pencil skirt was still on.“Have a seat,” she said coldly. It was clear that my rejection that day had hurt her deeply. The way she looked at me was tinged with sorrow.“If you hate me that much, why are you here? Is something urgent?”“I don’t hate you.”For once, I was dying to come

Beatrice had replied: [Okay, fine. I’ll be gentler next time.]Next time?!I was so embarrassed that I wished I could disappear.Up ahead, Aldric and Misty turned to us at the same time and gave me a thumbs-up.I was at a loss for a moment. Beatrice also took the opportunity to question me.“Conan, it’s been eight years. It’s also my fault I waited this long to finally work up the courage to ask you this. Do you want to be my boyfriend?”At that moment, time stood still. She was all I could see, lit up and beautiful in the light. How perfect that would be if only this were the novel’s ending. “No. We wouldn’t end well together.”I rejected her and quickened my pace, walking past Aldric and Misty.I did not dare look back. I could not bear to see Beatrice’s eyes....After that day, Misty still came by every day to keep Aldric company. However, Beatrice never showed up again. One evening, after dinner, Misty helped Aldric settle in for his evening nap.She then came

“You know what? They’re right. What you did back then was wrong, and I shouldn’t have let it slide.“You need to face the consequences.”My heart leaped into my throat as I asked, “What are you doing?”She lowered her head and bit down on my collarbone, sucking it hard.“Are you out of your mind?!”I pushed her away with all my might.Even so, she left one mark after another on my body.“Snap out of it!”She looked at me with a bitter expression and said, “I don’t believe you have a girlfriend.“If you really have one, tell her to come fight me.”When I left her place, all I could say was, “You’re impossible!”Beatrice had changed. The Beatrice of the past had always been gentle and soft-spoken.The current one was completely unpredictable, and she even carried a certain unsettling side about her.In all those flashes of the future I had seen, the Beatrice I fought with day in and day out was never this difficult to read. For the past few days, Beatrice kept coming aroun

Something snapped inside me.Even though both of us were still dressed, the sensation was so intense that my hand reacted as if it were being burned.I tried to pull away, but she held on even tighter. The air between us grew thick with unspoken tension.“Beatrice, you’re drunk...”“Conan, isn’t this exactly how you touched me back then? Why are you pulling away now? You didn’t hold back at all when you had your way with me eight years ago.”Even though we were only intimate once, what she said made those memories come flooding back. They made me feel utterly ashamed.“Are you recalling it? You’re blushing.”Only then did I realize that Beatrice was rubbing her cheek against mine.“Conan, you don’t actually have a girlfriend, do you? Because a guy with a girlfriend wouldn’t react like this.”She kissed my lips as she added, “Why don’t you finish what you wanted to start eight years ago?”Her gaze in the dim room bewitched me. I could not resist indulging her.She leaned he

Misty was about to say something, but my face went pale.I told her, “Please, stop talking...”She rolled her eyes, turned around, and walked off.In the end, I did not have the courage to see Beatrice again. All I could see in my head was that image of me being crippled and dying alone in a filthy bed.So, I went straight to Taylor and put in my resignation. My position did not really require much of a handover, anyway. In just an hour, I had packed up my things, walked out of that building, and never looked back.I had to change my number again.I felt like I was running for my life.I moved from Caldon to Dantrell. This time, I was smarter about it. I asked Aldric to keep me posted on Beatrice’s whereabouts. Whenever she came to my city, I would flee. She would always arrive right after I left.I kept that up until I got recruited by a company overseas. That was when I finally stopped running.I worked abroad for six years. I started with nothing and built a good
