Astrid's POV

By the time I came out, the four people who'd promised to wait for me were nowhere to be found.

I didn't bother looking for them. Instead, I followed the crowd toward the parade, where I spotted my best friend, Leah Wolfe, standing on the lead float with three men dressed as knights by her side.

"I'm so jealous! I heard you have to book a spot on that float a month in advance," a young girl beside me said.

I watched them in silence, my eyes lingering on my fiance, Jacob Dixon, as he took Leah's hand.

It had to be booked a month in advance, and they still managed to forget about me.

I looked away without a flicker of emotion on my face.

Surrounded by tourists enjoying themselves, I felt as though I were in a completely different world.

Once the parade ended, the four of them found me just as I was about to leave.

"Astrid, where have you been? Come on! We made dinner reservations. Let's celebrate your birthday!"

Jacob took my hand, while my childhood friends, Caleb Mercer and Lucas Ford, nodded enthusiastically beside him.

"We've been planning this surprise for ages!" they said.

Leah came over with a smile, too.

For a moment, I was stunned.

Had they really planned a surprise for me? Had they actually remembered that today was my birthday?

I let them lead me to the restaurant, only for a staff member to stop us at the entrance.

"I'm sorry, but your reservation is for four people, and we can't squeeze another chair around the table. You'll have to wait for a larger table if you want to dine together."

I stopped in my tracks, feeling like a complete fool for getting my hopes up even for a second.

Jacob looked startled. "I guess I miscounted."

I smiled bitterly. Somehow, the top student in the computer science program couldn't even count to five.

Leah bit her lip unhappily. "We have to wait? But I'm starving."

The three men turned toward me almost simultaneously, exchanging hesitant glances.

"How about—"

"I'll leave," I interrupted, stepping aside before they could finish. "Enjoy your meal."

Jacob immediately broke into a smile. He reached out to ruffle my hair, then cupped my face in his hands and chuckled. "That's my Astrid. I knew you'd understand. Besides, you said you were trying to lose weight, remember?"

Caleb and Lucas had already taken Leah inside.

"Just wait for us out here. We won't be long."

I watched the four of them laughing and chatting together inside the restaurant. All I could think was how bitterly cold December in Bayton could be.

I blinked against the wind, which left my eyes red and stinging. Rather than wait for them, I turned and walked toward the exit alone, making my way against the flow of the cheerful crowd.

This wasn't the first time they'd forgotten me.

Once, when we went hiking, the cable car could only accommodate four passengers, and Jacob had somehow managed to buy exactly four tickets.

They promised to send someone up to get me once they reached the bottom of the mountain, so I stayed behind and waited.

Hours passed, and by the time night fell, I could hear wolves howling in the distance. Still, no one came for me.

Eventually, a park ranger found me and took me down the mountain. When I finally got home, the four of them were watching a movie together.

"Astrid? Why are you only getting home now? We thought you were upstairs sleeping."

They looked genuinely confused, as though they'd completely forgotten that I'd been stranded on the mountain.

Then, there was our graduation trip.

They'd suggested traveling abroad. Although I didn't speak the language and was running a high fever, they insisted that I come along. They promised over and over that they'd take good care of me.

Yet, at our very first stop, they forgot about me and left me on a high-speed train in Sylora.

I couldn't understand what anyone was saying, and I panicked because I had no idea what to do. My fever grew worse until I eventually passed out.

By the time the four of them returned from their trip, they were shocked to learn that the embassy had already arranged for me to be brought home.

"Huh? What are you doing here? We thought you were with us the whole time."

Apparently, I was so easy to overlook that they hadn't even noticed I was missing for over ten days.

They even went on and on about their trip, showing me photos of the four of them together.

A gust of cold wind brought me back to the present. I pulled out my phone and called my mom, Helen Greene.

"Mom, remember when you said that once I turned 24, I could choose between staying here and getting some experience at our overseas branch? I've made my decision. I want to go abroad."

After hanging up, I looked up to see brilliant fireworks bursting across the night sky.

The words "Happy Birthday" appeared, followed by the initials of all four of them.

The birthday girl herself had been left out.

I let out a bitter laugh and murmured to myself, "Happy 24th birthday, Astrid Finch."

He seemed to notice the difference, and his expression grew increasingly dejected. After a moment, I gave a small nod."Okay. I've heard you."I turned to leave, but he caught me by the wrist. His grip was gentle, nothing like the way he'd grabbed me when he tried to force me to apologize to Leah. But that only made the irony sting."Please don't go," he said, looking down at me with desperation in his eyes. "Astrid, I don't want us to break up."He lowered his head and pleaded, "I've already fired Leah, and I promise I'll never have anything to do with her again. Please believe me."I looked at him in silence for a couple of seconds before pulling my hand away. That seemed to send him into a panic."I don't believe you," I said. "You promised you'd protect me for the rest of your life. Did you think that promise would expire after

Astrid's POVMeanwhile, on the other side of the world, I'd just landed in Meryn. My phone was flooded with messages from all three of them. Jacob alone had sent me more than a hundred, but I didn't bother replying to a single one. Instead, I blocked their numbers and deleted everything.I'd left in such a hurry that I'd almost forgotten about those three jerks.Shortly afterward, Mom video-called me."Those boys came looking for you. They went to the lodge first, and Jacob even got into a car accident."I merely nodded. In the past, I would've dropped everything to rush to Jacob's side and take care of him, but now, I simply acknowledged what Mom had told me.Whether he lived or died had nothing to do with me anymore."Oh, and I've officially called off your engagement with Jacob," Mom added."Got it. Thanks, Mom."After hanging up, I headed to the house I'd purchased in Meryn before my departure. I unpacked my belongings and finally breathed a sigh of relief. That mise

How were they supposed to live with themselves?Jacob rushed toward the stretcher, his eyes red as he reached out with trembling hands and lifted the sheet. But when he saw an unfamiliar face beneath it, he let out a breath of relief. His knees nearly buckled, and Caleb and Lucas hurried to steady him."Thank goodness it's not Astrid."Something seemed to occur to Caleb then. "Wait, what if Astrid found her own way home after we left last night?"Jacob shook his head. He didn't know, but he desperately hoped Caleb was right. The rescue teams eventually finish

Third-Person POVThe group chat was dead silent. After a long while, Caleb and Lucas finally responded."Wait, did Astrid get in the car last night?""I can't remember. He called Astrid three times, but she didn't answer any of his calls. That had never happened before. He squeezed his eyes shut, his lips pressed tightly together as he struggled to contain his growing panic.Suddenly, his gaze fell on the car's dashcam. Astrid's POVI was sitting off to the side when a text popped up on my phone, reminding me to check in for my flight the following morning.Jacob came over and glanced down at my screen."What are you looking at?" he asked.I immediately locked my phone. "Nothing."Then, I looked at Leah, who was laughing happily, and held out my hand. "Your precious Leah is happy now. Can I have my pendant back?"Jacob's brows drew together almost imperceptibly at my choice of words, but his expression relaxed a moment later. He handed the emerald pendant back to me.Just as I reached for it, Leah slammed into me, knocking the pendant out of my reach. It hit the ground with a sharp crack and shattered. My eyes widened in horror. I stared at the broken pieces scattered across the floor before slowly crouching down to pick them up.Leah immediately bit her lip and apologized, "I'm so sorry, Astrid! Astrid's POVLeah resigned almost immediately and became Jacob's personal assistant that very afternoon. To celebrate her new job, the three of them rented out an entire lodge for her.I frowned at the invitation on my phone and declined without hesitation. "I'm not going."Leah burst into tears again, and Jacob was so desperate to comfort her that he came straight to my house. He cornered me outside my bedroom. "Can you stop being so difficult for once?"I sighed. "What exactly have I done? Am I not even allowed to say I don't want to go?"Over the years, whenever I refused to go along with Leah's wishes or she started crying, I was automatically to blame. No one ever bothered asking what I wanted or whether I was happy. When it was time to take our graduation photos, the three of them bought flowers for Leah but forgot about me.Leah insisted on giving me her flowers, but I refused to accept them. Rather than let her get upset at the sight of me, they simply excluded me from
