Chapter 1

Author: Celebrant
The entire room was already shrouded in thick smoke and flames the moment I woke up.

When death came, my spirit rose and lingered in midair.

I looked at my body, stiff and curled up in the corner of the bathroom. I was no longer breathing, yet my wide-open eyes still brimmed with longing for life.

The white dress I had on was dirty with soot stains, and my struggles to escape had left my palms charred and disfigured.

It was only yesterday that I'd happily tried on my wedding dress.

The more I thought about it, the more the fire seemed like a twisted, cruel joke.

When the flames first broke out, I had followed the self-rescue methods my fiance, Daniel Ingram, had taught me.

After covering my mouth and nose with a damp towel, I tried to open the bedroom door, but it wouldn't budge.

The fire itself was odd, but it was even stranger that the door lock was broken.

I soon became dizzy from oxygen deprivation. Barely holding on, I ran to the balcony to call Daniel.

He was a fire captain, and he had insisted more times than I could count that I call him right away if I was in danger.

"I will always answer my work phone, no matter the time."

His promise echoed in my ears as I called him with trembling hands.

At the first ring, he didn't answer. At the sixth ring, there was still no answer. It wasn't until the seventh ring that the call finally connected.

"Bella Kessler! Don't ever joke about a fire! I mean it!"

Daniel's voice dripped with impatience as he left me no chance to speak. "As a Warrior, your sense of smell is a hundred times sharper than an ordinary person's. Even if there's a fire, you have plenty of time to escape!

"Laura is an Omega. Without a wolf's protection while she's pregnant and weak, she might not even be able to call for help if she runs into danger! You know that and you're still pulling such stunts out of jealousy?"

Then, I heard Laura Knapp, her voice tinged with gratitude and guilt. "Mr. Ingram, I-I didn't mean for this to happen. Ms. Kessler must have misunderstood our relationship…

"I was just so scared after the fall since I was home alone and I was worried the baby would be hurt…"

I opened my mouth, wanting to tell him that the fire was already out of control and to come save me quickly, but thick smoke filled my throat. I coughed violently, unable to form a single word.

"This is my last time telling you this—there's nothing going on between Laura and me! If you keep this nonsense up, I might have to rethink our future together!"

Daniel hung up in a fury, leaving behind only the cold buzz of the disconnected line.

Meanwhile, Laura was lounging on her couch, scrolling through news about me. When she saw the headlines about my death in the fire, she laughed triumphantly."You're finally dead, Bella. He looked like a demon from hell.Startled, Laura exclaimed, "Daniel, what are you doing with that?"Daniel said nothing in response. He pounced on her, pinning her to the couch and swiftly plunging the knife into her abdomen. Laura shrieked in pain as blood spread across her shirt. But Daniel didn't stop there. He stabbed her again and again, as though he were trying to carve out the rage and grief in his heart.Only when Laura stopped moving did he finally cease his attacks. After the funeral, Daniel sat before my portrait, tears sliding down his cheeks.Memories of our past together cut him like a blade. He remembered when he first became a firefighter. He had gotten hurt and separated from his unit while he was out on a call due to his inexperience and recklessness.I had taken him to the hospital and even paid his medical bills. During that time, I made sure he was well cared for until he recovered enough to be discharged. After that, he pursued me with fierce devotion. Now, because of him, I was dead.Daniel clenched his fists, overwhelmed by guilt and regret.I had once proposed to him, but he was hesitant. He wasn't sure whether his feelings for me were genuine or the result of external pressure. That was when Laura entered the picture. She was gentle, caring, and clingy. She made him feel needed in a way I didn't, as I had always been self-sufficient. It was a new feeling for him that stood out among the rest.Enthralled by the novelty, Dan

Right then, Laura came out of the bedroom in her pajamas, rubbing her eyes as she walked over to Daniel. On the other end of the line, Mom heard Laura's voice loud and clear. She paused for a beat before questioning, "Daniel, aren't you living with Bella? Why is Laura there?"Daniel impatiently pushed Laura aside. Frowning, he said, "Valerie, please don't worry about that right now. Did Bella not go back home?"Mom's tone became sharp. "Bella hasn't contacted me at all. You'd better find her quickly!""Alright. I got it."Flustered, Daniel explained while rubbing his aching temples, "Things between me and Laura aren't what you think, Valerie. I'll explain everything when Bella comes back."With that, he hung up, grabbed his car keys, and rushed out the door. Laura tried to follow him, but the door shut in her face.Daniel sped down the road, his heart pounding. He remembered that I had sent him my new address once. While driving, he kept dialing my number. The phone beeped repe

I hovered behind Daniel and Laura, my heart aching. Our five-year relationship seemed to mean so little to him. Even if he no longer loved me, as a firefighter, he still shouldn't have stood by and done nothing. What was more, I had even been in his jurisdiction.I gazed at Daniel with disappointment. But in his eyes, there was nothing but Laura. He claimed he loved me and promised to always be good to me, yet when I was in danger, he left me to die for another woman. What hurt even more was that, even if he hadn't slept with Laura, he let her move into our home and sleep in the place that had been mine. The bed we had picked out together was now occupied by someone else.I closed my eyes in sorrow, not wanting to see them anymore.…Daniel sat on the couch, staring at our messages with a complex mix of emotions. He tried more than once to tell me about the fire, but he kept hesitating to type. In the end, he exited the chat. Our dog nuzzled against him, whining softly. He ha

Daniel's hands trembled as tears fell uncontrollably. He forced himself to calm down while consoling himself, thinking, "It's probably just a coincidence. That cheap bracelet can be bought anywhere. Anyone could have it. And with the fire being this big, there's just no way to identify the owner. She couldn't have been Bella…"As he soothed himself, he seemed to have forgotten something. That bracelet was a token of our bond. Because of how much I had treasured it, I had never taken it off. After Daniel and his unit arrived, the flames were quickly extinguished. The experts on-site concluded that the fire had likely started in the kitchen."It's likely that the person living in that unit forgot to turn off the stove, causing a gas leak that eventually led to an explosion."I furrowed my brows in confusion. This apartment had been empty, and I never even got a chance to use the kitchen after moving in.So how did the fire start?Daniel entered the apartment in haste, with Laura

Daniel sat in the passenger seat, and Laura, unwilling to sit in the back, slid in beside him."Daniel, I'm still a little worried. Why don't you call Bella and explain that you only hung up on her because you were worried about me? She loves you, so I'm sure she'll understand."Daniel gave a nod, his face the picture of disdain. "You don't have to worry about that. Bella's just being willful. She's even run away from home, but she's done this before. She'll come back in a few days."Lowering her head, Laura began to sob softly. "It's all my fault. If it weren't for me, you two wouldn't be fighting like this. I'm really sorry. Let me get out. I don't want you arguing because of me."She made as if to get out, but Daniel quickly stopped her.He reassured her warmly, "You've done nothing wrong, Laura. Bella's willfulness isn't anything new. I'll just explain things to her. And besides, you're pregnant. It's not safe for you to be alone."Laura bit her lip, gazing pitifully at Danie
