Chapter 2

Author: September Almond
"Don't call me that! If I hadn't had Jasper by my side all these years, I would've gone insane from having to face you every day. Bella already told me everything. That fire was not a threat to her at all. You brought this on yourself!"

Bella frowned. "Hannah, stop. Jason, calm down. We'll wait for you outside."

I walked into the bathroom. A pale man with swollen cheeks and traces of blood at the corner of his mouth stared back at me in the mirror.

I took out my phone and checked the email I'd received from Hermon Trauma Research Center three days ago.

"Mr. Frost, welcome to the New Life Program. Your flight ticket will be ready in three days."

I reached the car to find Jasper talking, Bella gazing at him tenderly, and Mom laughing heartily. Her laughter stopped when she saw me. She pulled open the backseat door and got into the car.

Bella opened the front passenger door. I instinctively walked over, but she stopped me. "Jason, Jasper gets carsick easily. You sit in the back."

Jasper got in, and Bella fastened his seat belt for him.

I said nothing and was just about to get in when Mom stopped me again. She laid down a disposable incontinence pad.

"Jasper said you've gotten so used to faking your illness that pretending to be incontinent comes easy to you."

I smiled bitterly and got in.

The car was silent, except for Jasper's quiet conversation with Bella about the preparations for the forum.

When the car stopped outside the restaurant, the private room was already packed with their friends and classmates. They all turned to look at me with curious, slightly mocking expressions.

I stood at the doorway, watching Jasper get ushered into the seat of honor before it finally dawned on me.

This was a celebration banquet prepared just for him. Not a single seat was left for me.

"Pour him a drink and thank him for helping you." Mom handed over a glass.

Bella took it and held it to my lips.

"I'm allergic to alcohol…"

"This isn't alcohol." Then she whispered in my ear and gently pinched my cheek. "Trust me, Jason."

That little gesture had been just between us for ten years.

Jasper walked over, his face flushed. He raised his glass and lightly clinked it against mine. "I'll drink mine first."

Everyone started exchanging knowing looks. Some even began teasing us.

"That's pretty rude. Bella, get your man under control."

"Come on, don't ruin the mood!"

Bella pressed the glass to my lips, digging it into the wound in my palm. I flinched in pain, and the drink went straight down my throat.

I choked and coughed uncontrollably as large red rashes began spreading across my neck.

Jasper gasped softly beside Bella. "Sorry, I think I mixed up our glasses."

Flustered, Bella was just about to help me up when Jasper clutched his forehead. "Bella, I feel so dizzy."

Her outstretched hand immediately changed direction as she wrapped her arms tightly around Jasper and asked if he was okay.

Jasper leaned against her, peeking at me with a smile.

Mom also shoved me aside, ignoring the rashes on my face.

Unwilling to endure the humiliation any longer, I swallowed the blood rising in my throat, endured the tingling sensation on my skin, and walked out.

A message from Bella popped up on my phone. "Take a cab home. I'll get you some medicine."

I didn't reply.

I took a cab and went to the emergency department. By the time my IV was finished, it was midnight.

When I got home and opened the door, the living room was brightly lit. Jasper sat on the couch wearing my new pajamas, while Bella crouched in front of him, massaging his ankle.

"I wanted to support you, but you just had to walk on your own. See? Now you twisted your ankle." Bella's voice was scolding, but there was concern beneath it.

When she saw me, her hand paused for a moment before she slipped Jasper's foot back into his slipper.

"You're back. I bought you soup and medicine. Eat first, then take two pills."

I didn't respond, my eyes fixed on the pendant around Jasper's neck. "Who says you can wear it? Take it off!"

He knelt before the police and screamed when he saw the lights. The doctor said the burns on his legs were so severe that he might not be able to walk normally again. When Jasper woke up, he immediately said that Mom had done this to him."Where's my mom?""Hannah isn't your mom!""She's my godmother. Bring her here. I have something to ask her."Later, the police showed me the footage from the hospital hallway. The caregiver wheeled Mom over to Jasper.Mom was still feeling hopeful. Bella stood outside the lab with a folder in her hands. She'd been doing this for 27 days straight. For the first 20 days, Bella came to see me, but I refused to let her in. Then for the next 7 days, she came with the patent transfer documents. She hadn't fought it when Shaw Corporation acquired her company. She'd only held on to a few key technologies. Now, she was handing them over to Claire."I don't want money. I just want to stay by your side, even if it means just bringing you a glass of water."I didn't take the folder from her. "We only recruit useful talents.""I can volunteer for clinical trials.""The New Life Program is still in the observation phase.""I'm willing to sign any agreement.""Bella, drug trials are overseen by an ethics committee. They're not a place for you to atone for your sins."She faltered. "Then what can I do?""Go downstairs and sign up with the project team. They need a data entry clerk."Bella nodded. "Okay. I'll do whatever it takes for

"Jason, is it you? Jason!"I had just set down my microphone, and the audience was still applauding when Bella rushed to the stage.I'd just finished explaining the clinical focus of the New Life Program, including rebuilding after trauma and helping patients regain control of their lives.Suddenly, a chair toppled over in the last row.Bella's eyes were bloodshot, and she'd lost a lot of weight. Her hair was usually perfect, but now it was a mess. She shoved the security guard aside and walked over to me. "Jason, you're still alive. This is great. Did you know I've looked for you for the past three years…"I stood still, my fingers gripping the edge of the microphone. My expression remained calm. "Ma'am, you've mistaken me for someone else."Bella's face paled. "How can you not be him? You have his voice, his eyes, and the scar on his left hand."She reached out to touch my palm, but I took a step back.Claire walked onto the stage and stepped in front of me. "Ms. Dixon, plea

"No, I didn't! Shut up!" Bella screamed, her eyes red, then she pounced on Mom.The woman turned off the tablet."Let me introduce myself. I'm Claire Jenkin, the head of Hermon Trauma Research Center in Aether. I'm also the sponsor of the New Life Program you applied for."The fire was not an accident. By the time we received your message and arrived, all we could do was place a body at the scene. You were already unconscious, and your condition was critical. As for what happens next…"I nodded, my voice weak and hoarse. "They'll recognize the phone. The medical examiner will run a DNA test. Jasper has a year's worth of my treatment samples. If I'm right, he'll do everything he can to prove that the body is mine."Claire looked at me. "He already did. He provided the police with a DNA comparison report. The report identified the deceased as Jason Frost."I slowly balled my fist as Claire handed me a name change form."You can keep your name, or you can choose a new one."I nodd

Bella's eyes flew open in shock."The storage room caught fire, and they found an unrecognizable body at the scene." The bodyguard's voice shook, and every word hammered into Bella's heart."What?" Bella sat up straight, her face white. "What did you just say?"The bodyguard didn't dare to lift his head. "It was caused by a short circuit in the old, faulty wiring. By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire was already out of control."Bella didn't hear the rest as she rushed out of the house.Mom was talking to Jasper about the celebration banquet when she noticed a change in Bella's expression and a tremor in her voice. She asked, "Bella, what's wrong? What happened?""Something happened to Jason."Jasper and Mom exchanged a glance, then hurried after Bella.…When I opened my eyes, there was a needle in my wrist. A woman sat beside my bed, dressed in a black suit and holding a document. Her voice was cool, but not pushy at all. "The doctor said you inhaled too much smo

I had just climbed into a cab when Mom called. She yelled, "Jason, if you still think of me as your mom, then get your ass back here to sign the agreement! You ingrate, it's just a stupid pendant! Why are you so hung up over it?"I hung up.When I checked into the hotel, I found that all my cards had been frozen. I sat in the lobby and called my friends, but they either hung up without a word or didn't answer at all.One of them said helplessly, "Jason, Ms. Dixon has made it clear that we are not to help you. Just admit you were wrong to her."Jasper posted nine photos on his Instagram. They were filled with pictures of luxury goods, and the center photo showed him beaming between Bella and Mom.The caption read, "It's obvious when someone loves you. It feels so good to have people backing me up and someone to catch me when I fall."I spent the night at a 24-hour convenience store.Early the next morning, two bodyguards blocked my way when I stepped out."Mr. Frost, Ms. Dixon
